TOTAL POINTS: 1970/2000

Roland Rivera: Legion of the First Prince is one of the less common Slaves to Darkness subfactions, but one of the most fun ways to leverage its ability to put the Mark of your choice on any Undivided unit is to have a big blob of Chosen. That lets them tap into Slaanesh when they need extra speed via the run & charge command, Nurgle when they’re in a protracted combat, or Khorne when you’ve set up a juicy charge for them. All the while, they have the potential for upgrades via Eye of the Gods rolls, as Legion lets you keep Undivided alongside your second Mark.

The Chosen are surrounded by a mix of the usual suspects and some spicier picks. Be’lakor, 2 Sorcerer Lords, a unit of Furies, and a brick of 20 Nurgle Warriors with the Eroding Icon don’t need much of an introduction, but you don’t often see Knights with the Undivided mark (likely a backup target for the Mark-swapping ability in case the Chosen go down or don’t need it). Eternus is also an interesting addition, likely here due to his synergy with Furies (bonus CP) and to a lesser extent with Be’lakor (makes his revive ability more likely).

Overall, this list managed to successfully walk the line between doing fun things and powerful things, and rewarded its pilot with a strong finish.

Peter Holland: The legend that is Pete Atkinson joins us once more for a guest commentary. Check out his own blog, the awesome PlasticCraic.

Pete Atkinson: I’m putting this one right up there with The Sixth Sense and “No, I am your father“¹: Mancrusher Gargants are suddenly having a moment on top tables, and that is a plot twist I did not see coming.

Brodd’s Stomp always starts with Broddley himself – it actually doesn’t have to, interestingly enough, but it kinda does.  Getting your 40 wound giga-chad with a 5++ ward is serious business and a big part of why we’re even doing this.

The other big thing is picking up terrain – ideally faction terrain – and bouncing it off your opponent’s head.  If that stuff ever gets old, it hasn’t yet.  So the next thing I’m putting in every Stomp list is a Gatebreaker, because that terrain-chuck thing is a shooting attack, so you’re getting extra juice out of any All Out Attack used in the shooting phase – this combos really nicely with that rend -3 damage 4 rock if you can ever hit the 2+ wound roll on one dice (you can’t.  I’m telling you now.  It’s a thing).  Plus Gatebreakers are just really good.

Laura’s GB is loaded up with the circle-healing CT and the 5+ mortal ward artefact for extra DPS funtimes, with Nullstone going on the 3rd Mega for the Unbinds.  History shows that the Icon has won out amongst the Nullstone artefacts, and fair enough too.  Bear in mind that you can put Bless on this fella with Brodd’s prayers, and you can have some kind of ward on all three Megas, which is pretty sweet.

I ran through the merits of Mancrushers vs a 4th Mega at some length when Brodd’s Stomp first came out, and noting that this was old points (so you can fit a little more in the army now), the list I cooked up came out very similar to what Laura is running here:

So I won’t repeat the whole thing again, but the key points are that the babies give Brodd a cheap bodyguard to switch on his ward, and they give you higher quality of life for battle tactics (e.g. dumping a couple of cheap-ish models on board edges for Surround and Destroy).

Speaking of which, quality of life for this army on secondaries is high….very high.  Your AOR tactics include such difficult challenges as “getting onto objectives”, and now the Nullstone gives you another freebie, albeit there’s only so many objectives you can actually take back when you tend to dominate Primaries.  I rate Laura’s choice of Slaughter of Sorcery – with no wizards of her own she’s halfway there, the shooting can add up (it’s not that hard to get within 12″ for this army) and if you face popular armies like Khorne or KO, it’s a straight-up gimme.

One thing that counts against you is the release and popularity of FEC.  Morbheg Knights and Crypto Bros are just a couple more hyper-aggressive combat units stepping into a meta already stuffed with things like Squigs and the laughably broken Plague Censer Bearers.  There are units out there that will smoke Brodd without blinking, so forget about hitting Prios – the biggest element of luck I’d want on my side to steer this army to a podium is a favourable draw.  Let the KO do you a favour and light up the glass hammer trading armies, and there’s not much that can stand in your path.  Damn this makes me want to play the army.

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Noel Fundora: This list has the great bones of any good FeC list. 20 Royal Beastflayers with the chalice will ensure that you have an anvil that can sit on a point and not give in. Paired with the passive recursion of the Archregents, those Beastflayers and their multi-wound models are not going anywhere. It also features a brick of 40 ghouls that can also take great advatage of the chalice, while packing a nice punch of a multitude of attacks.

The premier hammer of the list being a 9-block of Horrors will shift most targets, especially with the list being in Hollowmourne for that extra damage on the charge. The number one difficulty for this list will be high save targets, which I am sure were featured in the KO and STD lists that it was defeated by at this event. This can be somewhat mitigated by that ever important Hoarfrost and a cheeky teleporting blizzard from the Gorewarden.
The inclusion of 2×3 Morbhegs will help with easy turn 1 Surround and Destroy as well as offer some dangerously quick hero hunters. The Cruel Taskmaster General will ensure that if that block of Horrors is not eliminated in one foul swoop, it is going to stand back up as dangerous as before. The inclusion of the Acolyte Battalion is key because every spell this list has access to (warscroll and lore) plays a key role in achieving its goals.

AoS Meta Stats W/Ending 24th March 2024 – Battlescroll: Nullstone Cache

Disclaimer

The data contained inside this article is only Woehammer’s interpretation. There are differing methods and analyses of the data available from Games Workshop and Honest Wargamer, whose methodology differs slightly from our own.

All of these sources should be viewed as a collective whole to allow you to gather a larger picture of the Age of Sigmar meta. The win rates, while accurate for events we have on record so far, are likely to change in the coming weeks and shouldn’t be the single point of reference for a factions strength.

How Win Rates are Calculated

All of our data for GTs are pulled from Best Coast Pairings, Stats & Ladders, and Ecksen for two day, 2000 point single events. Everything else we draw data on is shown in the RTT/Casual data. GT and RTT data are shown together in the combined data. We split all draws between the wins and losses of a faction evenly, as we believe this provides a fair reflection of a factions win rate. For example, as a player, you may achieve 2 wins, 2 losses, and a draw at an event. Some sites will only count the wins towards the faction rate, so in this case, 40% (2/5=0.4). Woehammer includes half of the draws, so our result would be 50% (2.5/5=0.5).

While the faction win rate may state one figure, it is more than likely to have evolved during the course of the Battlescroll as players find hidden gems within their battletomes. These are then copied by other players or answers found to these by others.

Faction Win Rates

The above chart shows the combined data (all events) currently hosted on Best Coast Pairings, Stats & Ladders, and Ecksen. This chart would be the most similar in data to Games Workshops’ own metawatch articles.

The value in brackets shows the number of matches featuring that faction (excluding mirror matches) the data is based on.

The above chart shows the same information for single player, 2000 point, 5 or more round events. This would be considered the more competitive view, with players often doing their utmost to optimise lists for these events.

The above shows the results for events that aren’t classified as a GT. So this would include RTTs, doubles, teams, and everything else in between.

Win Rates

I thought it may be interesting to also view the win rates by month during the battlescroll. This allows us to see the effect of new Ironjawz or the like on their particular faction. Or it may show whether armies with high win rates are being adapted to by their opposition.

Subfaction and Army of Renown Win Rates

No subfaction data yet, as the sample sizes are too small.

Player Results by Wins

This graph has at least two purposes. Firstly, it shows the faction popularity by the number of players, and secondly, it breaks down those players’ results in terms of the number of wins they achieve.

Faction Popularity

The full list month-by-month is below:

When looking at the above table, bear in mind that this is the worldwide meta, and region to region or even city to city may differ. So while this gives us a general idea of the meta it may not be representative of your local meta.

We’re seeing (as always) a massive spike in the player base of the new tomes that have been released and fall off on the older Tomes. This is to be expected really as competitive players jump around following the “Oooo shiny” method of collecting. They’ll likely always be a strong base for Stormcast Eternals, thanks to them appearing in nearly all beginner army sets, as magazine collections and the feature of many stories in Age of Sigmar.

Players Achieving 5-0 Wins, Tournaments in Winning Positions and 3 Wins from

Out of all the players using that faction (shown in brackets next to the faction name), this graph shows the number achieving a whitewash at a GT with 5 wins from 5. Those achieving 4 wins from 4 after the fourth round and those achieving 3 wins from 3 after the 3rd round. Take into account that those who achieve 5-0 are included in the numbers of 4 wins from 4 and 3 wins from 3. Likewise, those achieving 4 from 4 are included with the 3 from 3 data.

We’ve also shown the percentage of players managing to achieve more wins than losses at a GT event.

Players with 4+ Wins

The above has been sorted to show the number of players achieving 4 or more wins with their faction.

Faction Pairings

The above shows the win rate for factions against the others currently in the game. Reading this chart, you’ll need to view it as the vertical column (green) against the horizontal row and then cross reference these.

Battleplans

We’ve gathered data on Battleplans where players have informed us of which were used at events.

The above shows how many events each battleplan was used in. This, therefore, shows how popular battleplans are with TOs.

The above chart shows each factions win rate on the relevant battleplan. This can be useful for some TOs if the wish to give a leading faction or a popular faction at their event a challenge.

Conclusions

If you’re planning your list for a GT, look at the data as a whole. Don’t just look at our data either, look at TSN and also GW. Get a big picture, use these sites as sources to make your own informed opinion on the meta. Think about which armies are popular, as you’ll likely face at least one or two of these armies at some point during an event, especially in the earlier rounds.

Look at those factions that are regularly in a tournament winning position and winning GTs, as these are likely to be your opponents in the later rounds. I believe you should look at building a list that is able to cope with playing the following factions at some point in a GT if you’re looking to compete;

  • Blades of Khorne
  • Stormcast Eternals
  • Kharadron Overlords
  • Soulblight Gravelords
  • Hedonites of Slaanesh
  • Nighthaunt(!?)

But also, if you’re playing a local GT with your club, then bear in mind that meta may be completely different to those given in the stats above. All of what is presented here, should be taken with a pinch of salt, but hopefully it gives you some guidance when it comes to list construction, or even army choice if you’re looking to play Age of Sigmar.

Roland Rivera: Hazel’s Ogors are back, and it’s like they never left. The name of the game is simple – play as many Stonehorns as you can afford to stuff into a list, and let their combination of durability, speed, damage, and capture power carry you to victory. The Tyrant is a fun complement to the big things, as it carries a source of AoE healing in the Splatter-Cleaver.

An interesting decision made by Hazel here is to not play any casters and instead opt for the Nullstone enhancement. I suspect this decision was spurred by the new Battle Tactic for the Nullstone enhancement bearer introduced in the latest Battlescroll. Otherwise, I think putting Arcane Tome on the Frostlord on Stonehorn would have been a very attractive option.

Hazel is perhaps one of the best Ogor players in the UK (if not the world), and she has showcased her skills once again with this list.

Roland Rivera: The Big Waaagh list that took 3rd at this tournament is an interesting one – while the likes of a Wurrgog Prophet, Warchanters, and a Weirdnob Shaman are pretty standard fare for this army, this list has a few interesting picks that merit further discussion.

The first is the Killaboss on Gnashtoof – the recipient of yet another price cut (this unit was 200 points when 3rd edition launched!), GW is practically begging Orruk players to field it; its stats are very efficient by virtue of how cheap it is. Part of his job in this army is to be a Kruleboyz General to open up the gimme Battle Tactic that is Take Dat, Ya Suckers!, and the other part is to babysit the unit of Gutrippaz that is screening for their heavier-hitting Ironjawz cousins. Next is the reinforced unit of Maw-Grunta Gougers – this is so rarely seen, I had forgotten the unit could be reinforced until I saw this list. Ardboys, fresh off a much-needed points cut, are beginning to see more consistent play. Last but not least, Big Waaagh players rarely play more than 6 Gore-Gruntas, but Sebastian decided that wasn’t enough Pig for him, so he packed 3 more.

While some of the choices made in listbuilding were definitely unorthodox, there’s no arguing with the results. This list did very well, demonstrating the depth of the Orruk Warclans unit lineup and the power of the Big Waaagh! allegiance abilities.

Kieren Coates: Benoit Coming through with the big 5-0 with what almost feels like a classic skaven list from 12 months ago during the GV/GC meta

We love to see thanquol back on the table proving he doesn’t need a surfboard to show his strength, combined with double grey seers, warbringer and double priest it has access to 8 casts (with warlord for 2 spells chosen per wizard), giving access to great prayers and blizzard for some short range mortal punch.

One notable difference is the warbringer taking sheild of distraction, a rarely seen artfiact that forces the enemy to only allow 1 unit per turn to attack the warbringer in melle, allowing for suicide charges into multiple units without fear of return damage – Its an interesting choice as warpstone charm has been the go to choice for many warpstone fanatics, but Benoit has found path for the shield and has made it work

10 censors, 20 monks, hell pit, thanquol, warbringer, blizzards, great plagues – if you dont respect the output of this list expect to get tabled very quickly upon a misposition with a lethal combination of mortals and high volume physical damage.

Congratulations on the 5-0

Celefaze: The classics never die. They only fall short of the meta for a bit. With a few key differences, this is the type of list you saw quite a bit at the release of the current book. Featuring Pretenders with the Masque for turn one depravity, a healthy dose of blissbarbs for damage, blissbarb seekers for save debuffing, and slickblades for highly mobile depravity generation. At the helm is a Strength of Godhood contorted epitome general (with all the standard trimmings) for a beast of a lynchpin hero that can issue a ludicrous number of commands, debuff a major threat with the crown, and punch above its weight with multiple damage buffs. Where this list diverges deliciously is the addition of a special favorite of mine: Glutos Orscollion. A key ingredient for any ranged list that may find itself starved for depravity in the early game, Glutos shores up that early weakness by providing his own -1 to-hit aura that covers a respectably large area of the board. The big guy is also a solid melee threat and possibly the tankiest entry Slaanesh has access to.  A flavorful take on the original recipe for victory with this book.

Carl Stokes: Even as we head full throttle into the indexification of AoS with the new edition this summer, we can still take the time to appreciate some excellently piloted KO lists. This one is pretty spicy, with the symmetry I love to see. Headed up by Brokk himself, this list really revolves around the perfectly balanced (as all things should be) frigate duo, both of which contain 9 endrinriggers for maximal healing and a very prickly exterior, should someone charge into them (or be charged).

Otherwise, the character department is a familiar sight, with the lack of admiral offset by a Voidstone Navigator and Stormcaller dirigible endrinmaster to unlock battleline endrinriggers and provide even more healing/shooting. Taking the nullstone icon ensures yet another automatic battle tactic for the army that’s the best in the game at scoring them. This sort of redundancy is really the name of the game for this list.

The amount of shooting that can be brought to bear, even without an ironclad, is staggering, with a killbox of 12” around each of the frigates. The classic move of slamming 2 frigates into an enemy and unpacking 18 Endrinriggers and Brokk that always strike first with extra attacks from Brokk can come as a real surprise to opponents and shatter the backbone of any army in the game.

We’ve slowly seen a transition away from the frigate/ironclad combo and more of this frigate/frigate/brokk set-up that leverages the speed and explosive melee power of the army rather than the pure shooting and mobile castle playstyle. It’s phenomenal to see how the KO book remains competitive across multiple GHBs, and the creation of fun lists like this one is something that’s been a real hallmark of AoS 3.0.

The only true weakness this army has is against massive recursion and monster truck opponents that can reach out and swat boats while maintaining the board presence to outscore them on objectives. This is an inherent weakness of non-Gotrek KO lists that can be seen here in this list’s only loss to the new FEC. Sometimes, you just don’t always have great matchups, and at the end of the day, a strong third place finish from Down Under is nothing to sneeze at! Great work, James!

Walter Brock: This list is a Katakros Petrifex list with a few new choices for dealing with different situations.

Starting off we see the Normal Spellcasting Savant, Mortisan General + Immortis Guard Brick.  Aura of sterility helps protect the list from shooting.

The Soul Reaper is a cost-efficient choice to add a second wizard for the Acolytes Detachment.  This lets the list get out a key spell. Or bank primal dice to stop opponent spells.
Katakros acts as the main engine of the list.  Buffing everything to 11.

Deathriders are a standard unit for OBR lists.  Easy battle tactics and screen + durability.

two uncommon picks are the harvester and the 6 stalkers.

The Harvester provides the best points for damage value in the Ossiarch book.  When buffed by the Ossifector for rend and wound rolls.  Adding 5s to explode and Katakros’s Hit buff lets the harvester act as a missile threat to take out important targets that the rest of the list doesn’t want to deal with.

6 Stalkers biggest strengths are their speed and damage.  Able to outspeed many units on the field and cripple them before the opponent has a chance to hit the OBR list.  With Katakros and the Petrifex bonus, any counterattack will have a hard time putting damage through on this unit.

AoS Meta Stats W/Ending 17th March 2024 – Battlescroll: Nullstone Cache

Look at those factions that are regularly in a tournament winning position and winning GTs, as these are likely to be your opponents in the later rounds. I believe you should look at building a list that is able to cope with playing the following factions at some point in a GT if you’re looking to compete;

Reverse Engineering Metawatch Age of Sigmar Stats

That’s a mouthful ain’t it?!

Let me caveat this whole article by saying, this is my best guess at their parameters. I am by no means saying these are the parameters that GW uses. However, they’re fairly close.

Firstly, let’s take a look at the latest Metawatch table:

Credit: Warhammer Cummunity

Luckily, with our new system of obtaining data, we can now attempt to replicate what GW draws down for its data. To do so, we had to use snippets of information that we’ve gleaned from both this, and past articles.

  1. Firstly, we know that they are obtaining their data from Best Coast Pairings (BCP), and now Stats and Ladders (based on the most recent article).
  2. We know that the data covered the previous 60 days. Therefore using the date in the bottom of their table as a guide we worked this back to the 4th January, give or take a day based on the date given.

What did that mean? Well we pulled the same data, and deleted the additional we get now from Ecksen to match GW’s smaller sample size 😉

I then worked throught this database and began excluding certain parameters I thought GW would. With each change I compared the stats to their data and then made the next change.

It was a long process….

So what did I include and exclude?

  • We excluded Ecksen as GW does not draw data from this site.
  • We then made the assumption that GW would also count draws as 0.5 of a win and 0.5 of a draw.
  • Excluded matches where the opponent had no army list or faction included.
  • Included mirror matches!!!!
  • Included team events
  • Included double events!!!!
  • Included all points sized games.
  • Excluded online events using TTS

The result based on the above, is the closest I can get to match their data. By closest, I mean all bar 2 of the factions are 0-1% different. Apart from Lumineth Realm-Lords who are 3% different and Ironjawz who are 2% different.

If we change any of those factors above we get at least two more factions that are more 2% or more different to GW.

Again, this isn’t saying this is their parameters, just the closes that I can get the database to match their stats. Would GW rally include mirror matches? Possibly, as it reflects the popularity of the faction within the customer base. Would GW include doubles events where armies are made up of two factions? I doubt it, but as I say, excluding these takes me further away from their data.

On to the table!

As always, the figure in brckets denotes the number of games in our sample database.

We’ve tried to show the two stat bars side by side. Metawatch in red (they seem to like red) and ours in yellow.

Of these factions, I have managed to have 11 match and a further 13 within 1%, which could be due to rounding somewhere.

Whats going on with Lumineth and Ironjawz? I have no idea. But whether I exclude smaller points tournaments, excluded mirror matches, exclude doubles tournaments or team tournaments, or combinations of these, the variance for these two factions never gets any closer and in doing so makes others worse.

My only other guess, is that perhaps GWs data includes some other source, perhaps events held at their Warhammer World venue, that isn’t included on BCP or Stats and Ladders.

Any, way I’m done looking at this for now. But, I’ll probably have another crack next week and also share the database when I do.
