Upcoming Top 3’s

This is just a quick post to say we’ve a large backlog of the Top 3 articles to get through. So this week, you’ll probably see 2 or even 3 posted each day using the pre-September Battlescroll points.

The guys will start commenting again on events that ARE using the updated points, and you’ll start to see these appear on the site at the start of next week.

They’ll be a week delay on all events to give us more time to get comments done on the events. Where events have less than 20 players, we’ll only publish the lists.

Woehammer Hobby (24th Sept 23)

Here’s what the guys and the Woehammer Community have been working on this week.

AoS Meta Stats W/Ending 17th September 2023 – Battlescroll: Andtor

Menu

Disclaimer

The data contained inside this article is only Woehammer’s interpretation. There are differing methods and analyses of the data available from Games Workshop and Honest Wargamer, whose methodology differs slightly from our own.

All of these sources should be viewed as a collective whole to allow you to gather a larger picture of the Age of Sigmar meta. The win rates, while accurate for events we have on record so far, are likely to change in the coming weeks and shouldn’t be the single point of reference for a factions strength.

How Win Rates are Calculated

All of our data is pulled from two day single events. We split all draws between the wins and losses of a faction evenly, as we believe this provides a fair reflection of a factions win rate. For example, as a player, you may achieve 2 wins, 2 losses, and a draw at an event. Some sites will only count the wins towards the faction rate, so in this case, 40% (2/5=0.4). Woehammer includes half of the draws, so our result would be 50% (2.5/5=0.5).

We have also included a confidence interval based on the sample size and their results. This interval has a 95% confidence rate. What does this mean? Essentially, we’re 95% sure that the win rate of the faction will fall inside this band at the release of the next battlescroll.

We have decided to include this as each factions win rates can (and will) fluctuate as more and more players post their results. While the faction win rate may be that specified right now, it is more than likely to change in the future. So when looking at a win rate, take into account the number of players who have posted results, as well as the upper and lower limit of that 95% confidence interval. This will give a good indication of the future win rate of that faction.

Event Submission

If you have organised an event that doesn’t appear in our database and has the following minimum requirements to be included:

  • Two Day Event
  • Singles Event
  • Minimum of 8 players

Then why not complete the form attached and send the results to thewoehammer@gmail.com? We’ll include them the next time we produce the stats.

Faction Win Rates

As we have now included a confidence interval within our data based on the sample size and results, we have now included all factions within the below tables regardless of their player base.

Win Rates

You’ll see in the chart above that each faction shows its current win rate as a % inside a text box. The paler green and yellow segments show the margin of error of that win rate. We predict with 95% confidence that the win rate will be within the paler bars upon the release of the next battlescroll. The size of this segment is determined by the number of tournament entries using that faction, the spread of their win rates at competitions and finally how many weeks are estimated to be left until the next battlescroll update.

It appears to be the last week under the old Battlescroll: Andtor before the new changes start to flow into tournament this weekend. So I can’t see any of the stats changing over the next week too much. But at the end of the period, we’re looking at only two factions above the 55% win rate, both of which have received nerfs in the new battlescroll, so watch this space!

At the other end of the table Nighthaunt fell into the sub 45% zone in the final week of the battlescroll and ended with 44%. They’re joined by Skaven (43%), Stormcast Eternals (42%) and Cities of Sigmar (36%).

Using out old format of win rate reporting and removing factions with less than 20 results, we have the following table:

Win Rate Comparison by Regions

Going forwards I may lump UK & Ireland, Scandinavia and Europe all into one category “Europe”. This then may be more directly comparable to the North American results as they’ll have similar player numbers.

Subfaction Results

I often get requested for Subfaction results, so will start posting win rates for those subfactions who have exceeded a player representation of 20.

Player Results by Wins

This graph has at least two purposes. Firstly, it shows the faction popularity by the number of players, and secondly, it breaks down those players’ results in terms of the number of wins they achieve.

Here, we’ve included all the factions that have been played to date, as there is no benefit in removing those with a small sample size.

Soulblight Gravelords and Ossiarch Bonereapers seem to be the most popular factions right now, and with win rates of +55% it’s probably no surprise. They’re closely followed by the other two factions with the newest battletomes, Seraphon and Blades of Khorne.

Faction Popularity

But while the Soulblight Gravelords are currently the most popular faction during this Battlescroll season, we’ve seen Blades of Khorne have had a resurgence in July, and this could be partly down to their anti-magic tech for the new GHB.

The full list month-by-month is below:

When looking at the above table, bear in mind that this is the worldwide meta, and region to region or even city to city may differ. So while this gives us a general idea of the meta it may not be representative of your local meta.

We’re seeing (as always) a massive spike in the player base of the new tomes that have been released and fall off on the older Tomes. This is to be expected really as competitive players jump around following the “Oooo shiny” method of collecting. They’ll likely always be a strong base for Stormcast Eternals, thanks to them appearing in nearly all beginner army sets, as magazine collections and the feature of many stories in Age of Sigmar.

Players Achieving 5-0 Wins, Tournaments in Winning Positions and 3 Wins from

Out of all the players using that faction (shown in brackets next to the faction name), this graph shows the number achieving a whitewash at a GT with 5 wins from 5. Those achieving 4 wins from 4 after the fourth round and those achieving 3 wins from 3 after the 3rd round. Take into account that those who achieve 5-0 are included in the numbers of 4 wins from 4 and 3 wins from 3. Likewise, those achieving 4 from 4 are included with the 3 from 3 data.

For example in the table above out of the 244 players who attended tournaments using Soulblight Gravelords, 45 of those players were able to go through their first three rounds undefeated (3 wins in 3 games) (Grey bar), 24 of those 45 players were then able to go four wins from four, after four rounds (Orange bar). Out of those 24 players, 21 were able to convert this into 5-0 (Blue bar)

Results Split

This chart tells you which factions are more capable of achieving positive results at tournaments. For Example, taking Soulblight Gravelords again, we can see from this chart that 61.25% (Blue Line) were able to achieve at least three wins at a 5 game tournament. 28.33% of the 244 Soulblight players were able to achieve four wins or more at GT’s (Orange Line). Finally 8.75% of the Soulblight players were able to achieve 5-0 (Grey Line).

Conclusions

If you’re planning your list for a GT, look at the data as a whole. Don’t just look at our data either, look at TSN and also GW. Get a big picture, use these sites as sources to make your own informed opinion on the meta. Think about which armies are popular, as you’ll likely face at least one or two of these armies at some point during an event, especially in the earlier rounds.

Look at those factions that are regularly in a tournament winning position and winning GTs, as these are likely to be your opponents in the later rounds. I believe you should look at building a list that is able to cope with playing the following factions at some point in a GT if you’re looking to compete;

  • Blades of Khorne
  • Seraphon
  • Stormcast Eternals
  • Soulblight Gravelords
  • Gloomspite Gitz

But also, if you’re playing a local GT with your club, then bear in mind that meta may be completely different to those given in the stats above. All of what is presented here, should be taken with a pinch of salt, but hopefully it gives you some guidance when it comes to list construction, or even army choice if you’re looking to play Age of Sigmar.

Vanguard: Orruk Warclans (Kruleboyz) – Beginners 1,000pt Army

Why play Kruleboyz?

Kruleboyz are one of the few armies which enjoy dishing out mortal wounds in buckets. It’s also the one Orruk army which enjoys a tonne of shooting attacks. They are a glass cannon however, and suffer from the odd breeze. They lack any serious screening but enjoy a surfeit of monsters that both dish out the damage and buff your troops attacks.

What’s in the Vanguard Box?

In the box you get:

  • Killaboss on Great-Gnashtoof
  • Murknob with Belcha-Banna
  • 10 Gutrippaz
  • 3 Man-Skewer Boltboys
  • 1 Beast-Skewer Killbow

All for £85 at Games Workshop. Unless you wanted to buy it through our affiliate Element Games, in which case it would cost you £72.25.

The total points of these units under the current battlescroll comes to just 540 points, so we’ll need to buy a fair few more units to get up to the 1,000 point mark.

Next go and pick up the Age of Sigmar Harbringer Set, it’s great value and you’ll get the difficult to source Swampcalla Shaman as well as 10 more Gutrippaz and 10 Hobgrots to act as a screen. This brings us up to 870 points. For the final spend, pick up another set of 3 Man-Skewer bolt boys.

Your total spend through Games Workshop will be £215 (if you include the Orruk Battletome which you’ll need for the rules). But as mentioned, if you use our affiliate link with Element Games, you’ll get all of this for just £176.25 (including the Battletome).

Don’t forget though, you can probably get at least £20 back for selling the Stormcast half of the Harbringer box. So consider this 1k army as £150ish with the Tome.

TOTAL POINTS: 990/1,000
Wounds: 89
Drops: 1

First off, we’ve chosen Grinnin’ Blades to nullify your squishy army from getting popped outside of 12″.

We’re then wrapping them all up into a single drop Battle Regiment. In theory this should give you control of the first turn. If you’re facing another ranged army like Kharadron Overlords or Lumineth Realm-Lords this can mean you actually opt to give them the first turn, force them to move closer but stay outside of their ranged attacks, then on your first turn have your Man-Skewers and Killbow take down some fools. If you’re lucky you may even get th priority into the second turn…

The Units

Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof

Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof Painted By Woehammer Peter

This fella is great, and it’s a model I personally love. With a 10″ move, he’s not particularly fast, so we’ve given him the mount trait Fast ‘Un to get that one extra hero phase move. Meaning, in theory you could potentially pull a move and charge off against an enemy 27″ away.

Rather than the traditional Supa Sneaky you often see on a Kruleboyz warboss, we’ve gone for Slippery Skumbag. This is to maxmise the Savage Hound ability which gives the unit +1 to its hit rolls if it made a charge in the same turn. This means if you’re locked in combat, you’ll be able to retreat out, and then charge once more in the same turn.

Swampcall Shaman and Pot Grot

Painted by Woehammer Peter

This guy is going to be key to maximising the amount of damage your units can kick out during the battle. Using his Poison ability means that the unit you buff will cause mortal wounds from their venom-encrusted weapons on a 5+ instead of the usual 6+. During the early stages of a game, you’ll want him giving poison to your ranged Man-Skewer Boltboyz. Follow this up late game with the Gutrippaz when they make combat and watch the colour drain from your opponent’s face.

We’ve also given him the spell Nasty Hex, so if you do come up against any armies with ward saves, he’ll have a chance of turning them off before your Poison enhanced units pick them apart.

As a last little gift, this guy will sticking close to either your Man-Skewer Boltboyz or your Gutrippaz, so we’ve given him the artefact Mork’s Eye Pebble. Meaning once per game in a single phase, the Swampcalla Shaman and all units within 12″ will have a 5+ ward save. Not bad for a bit of extra survivability.

Credit: Games Workshop

Under the current General’s Handbook (Season 23/24), this model has improved in value. With the amount of Wizards now able to cast various spells without too much difficulty, it helps to have a source of ward saves against them. Make sure you keep him near your key damage dealers like the Gutrippaz and Man-Skewers so they benefit from that 5+ ward save against spells.

On top of that he can dish out some mortal wounds alongside the Gutrippaz with the Breath of the Mire-drakes ability. Just don’t rely on it too much.

Gutrippaz

Painted by Woehammer Peter

I hope your woman loves you like Woehammer Pete loves Gutrippaz

– Pete Atkinson (PlasticCraic)

It’s true, I love these guys. I’ve found so many times that people underestimate the amount of damage that they can kick out (that’s why I have a list with 60 of them…).

With Poison from the SwampcallaShaman a unit of 10 of these boys they dish out the following damage on average:

v SaveGutrippaz (Wicked Stikka + Poison)
2+7.29
3+7.58
4+7.88
5+8.17
6+8.46
8.75

At only 150 points a unit, they’re great. Their downside is their lack of bravery, but this can be compensated for by the Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof‘s ability All Part of Da Plan.

Hobgrots

Painted by Woehammer Peter

These are here as a simple screen, but to be honest they’re not even too great at that. They won’t stick around and they won’t do too much damage. They’re not bad for protecting your Man-Skewer Boltboyz and Beast-Skewer Killbow, or for claiming home deployment area objectives. But otherwise don’t expect a great deal from them.

Beast-Skewer Killbow

Painted by Woehammer Peter

It’s a lot cheaper than it used to be, but don’t expect great things from it. Really, it’s only use is against multi wound monsters and even then you have to pray that it hits. IF it hits, and IF you roll a 6 on that to hit roll, you’ll be laughing though as every wound caused will be mortal…

Man-Skewer Boltboyz

Painted by Woehammer Peter

These are your early game damage dealers while the enemy struggles to get to grips with you. Get the Poison on them from the Swampcalla Shaman and fire at long range at first. If you have your target within 12″ though, make sure you shuffle them to ensure you’re using the hasty shot. Doubling the amount of shots means you’re fishing for those all important 6’s for the mortal wounds (5’s if you’ve given them Poison from the Swampcall Shaman).

As an idea as to what just 3 can do in terms of damage:

v SaveAimed Shot (+Poison)Hasty Shot (+Poison)
2+3.565.19
3+4.005.44
4+4.445.70
5+4.895.96
6+5.336.22
5.336.22

What Next?

When you’ve had a few games and you’re looking to expand your list up to 2k, I would seriously consider purchasing Gobsprakk. In the current meta with his Mork Sez No abilty and Primal Dice being able to enhance this he’s an absolute menace to enemy casters.

You may also want to look at getting a Snatchaboss on Sludgeraker, they’re beasts in combat and their Sludgeraker Venom means that the venom-encrustd weapons of any units nearby will be causing one additional damage each. That means your Gutrippaz could be causing 2 damage and your Man-Skewer Boltboyz 3 damage.

Most lists also run 2 Swampcalla Shamans to maximise the Poison output. If you also like running lots of Gutrippaz, I’d consider buying a Killaboss with Stab Grot or two for the bravery benefits.

Danny Wadeson: First off, let me congratulate Solomon Morrow, not just on 1st place but also on actually kinda having a vampire esque name. Love to see it.

The list is Legion of Night, known primarily for its teleporting, Morbheg Claw wizards who can zip in, nuke a fool with Blizzard (and this one knows all the spells thanks to Shaman of the Chilld Lands) and then TP back out in the opponent’s hero phase – sneaky!

It’s also got Mannfred, who has multiple shenanigans and doesn’t see enough play in his own faction, along with your usual smattering of MSU deadwalkers, the usual VloZD and Graveguard brick, who’re a little more appropriately costed these days but still a fantastic hammer.

Assuming you’ve heard of Soulblight before, there’s not much else to comment on here other than it being quite interesting to see msu zombies. But it has Mannfred in, so I’m happy – I’d love to know how many times he counter-charged with fight first to disrupt the opponent’s plans!

Kieran Bailey: Just as I settle in to write the words, “now Tzeentch can use the spell Rupture to make the Incarnate go wild” I look down the rest of the list and realise that there isn’t actually a Krondspine! Atta boy, David!

So what do we actually have. Well, there’s the Guild of Summoners with their easy to score ‘Call for Change’ Battle Tactic (Summon a Lord of Change) that means that the Tzeentch player had an excellent chance of scoring 10 points for Battle Tactics and 3 points for the Grand Strategy, which is an excellent start to any game.

Leading this force there is the still very good Kairos, though overpriced – 25 points more than Kroak? Come on GW?! Along with the Eternal Shroud allowing Fate Dice to come back, Kairos’ one per turn means there should be plenty of ways to tip the odds in his favour.

One place where those odds being tipped could be handy is when sending in the Enlightened on Disc. If you can guarantee a charge and buff up the flying bird-goats with Hoarfrost then they will be able to do a truly epic amount of damage, particularly if their target’s save is reduced by one with the Arcane Sacrifice spell. The Enlightened also prevent command abilities being used in the fight phase, so could be fighting at effectively rend -4.

Another piece of tech that has become more powerful with the change to Cogs is the Tome of Eyes as this gives you the re-rolls back, though only on one caster – probably Kairos. It’s also not a predatory spell, so can get around limitations on casting those.

The only blemish on David’s path to 4-1 was a Khorne matchup that is very difficult for any magic heavy army and, in fact, most armies at the moment. Congrats on an excellent result, David – may many more come in future!

“Hi List Enthusiast,

Post event it was identified that Gotrek was not eligible to be placed in the GHB23 Wizard Finders battalion due to being unique. This unique ruling has unfortunately has been missed by us TOs, the public when all lists were unlocked, and the five 5 opponents over the weekend. It was not raised as a complaint until post-event.

I’ve reviewed the list in full and it does have both the right units to interchange that makes this list legal, and it’s impacts were minimum at best when you review his opponent match ups and kill list. Game 4 was IDK and Game 5 against OBR which did not impact his most critical games. Gotrek’s kill list over the event was Avalanor, 10 Stoneguard, 20 Deathrattle Skeletons, Incarnate of Ghur, Arkhelian Allopex, and 6 Immortis Guard.

Reviewing 120 lists is no easy feat, and based on all the information above, we will keep the victories as it stands. It’s a shame we didn’t catch it earlier and we will review how we can improve our processes including an extension from the current list submission window to allow additional time for TO & peer review.
