Top Three AoS Lists for the Tales in the Wood XI GT

This is the top three AoS lists for the Tales in the Wood XI GT that took place in Germany on the 17th and 18th of August 2024. It saw 27 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

The Top Three AoS Lists

Nighthaunt
Death Stalkers
[Lore of the Underworlds]
[Morbid Conjuration]

Lady Olynder, Mortarch of Grief (300)
[General]
– 10 x Craventhrone Guard (200)

Reikenor the Grimhailer (210)
– 20 x Bladegheist Revenants (300)
– 2 x Dreadblade Harrows (160)

Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed (180)
[Lightshard of the Harvest Moon]
[Ruler of the Spectral Hosts]
– 10 x Hexwraiths (320)
– 5 x Hexwraiths (160)
– 5 x Hexwraiths (160)

Colin Klären: Like every competitive Nighthaunt list right now, I played Death stalkers in conjunction with the Morbid Conjuration Manifestation Lore. Added to that was the usual Heroic trait and the usual artifact to restore half of a destroyed unit once per game and to give +1 attack once for all units in wholly 12″ around the KoS.

In my list I wanted to have as few units as possible in the Generals Battalion, so that the opponent can’t get 1+ to hit & wound buffs against my important units. The Craventhrone Guard was the perfect choice and is also the secret winner of the list. +1 to hit & wound against the enemy Generals Battailion meant 21 attacks on the 3+/2+/-1/1dmg and that every turn from turn 2 on thanks to counter fire and the ability that the guard does not get negative modifiers on hit rolls. Pretty good unit for 200pkt.

Besides the obviously best units at the moment (Bladegheist/Harridans/Hexwraith/Reikenor) I chose Lady Olynder because she offers the army a lot of utility with two additional casts and the resurrection. I also played a 3 drop because I wanted to play the Knight of Shrouds. Thanks to his speed, I always had the option to set up passively and still be right up front to activate the Lightshard if necessary. He also gives me the opportunity to activate the Hexwraiths with +1 to Hit in chain activation.

In both mirror matches I wasn’t allowed to choose which player had to start, which definitely didn’t make it easy. Nevertheless, both games were over very quickly, as the opponents gave me turn 1 and I was able to destroy more than 700 pts in both games with a very aggressive style of play in turn 1.

The game against Lumineth was against a very strong opponent who was previously unbeaten with his list. Windchargers that ignore wards and that you can never catch, Teclis that puts all endless spells on the board every turn and unbinds all the spells I have, as well as 20 wardens that can dish out a ton of mortal wounds, made the game very close. Also, the battleplan “Jawz of Gallet” was very difficult for me to play because the LRL player could be the underdog all the time and was allowed to burn targets at will.

The final against Tzeentch and arguably one of the best players in the world (Tobias Schwarz) was also very close and could have gone either way. I opted for a more passive approach and didn’t try to pin Tobi in the first round. I wanted to have the middle objectives in Battle for the pass 1-2 rounds just for myself so that I could win narrowly in the end. I knew that a close win would give me the tournament victory and the golden ticket! Nevertheless Tzeentch is definitely not bad against Nighthaunt with all the mortal wounds the can dish out.

Connor Irwin: Congratulations to Dario for an excellent showing at Tales of the Wood for his Soulblight Gravelords. Let’s take a look at what makes this list spin.

Starting at the bottom there is a necromancer with its double activation ability that is great for Grave Guard with their new and improved durability. It has an Amulet of Screams artefact and the Lash of the Sire command trait. A great package to squeeze every ounce of power possible into that wizard. The Amulet punishes enemy wizards within 18″ with d3 mortal damage and the lash enables a friendly unit within combat range to make a hero phase d6″ move, which is great for slow grave guard in particular. Sharing that regiment are two utility pieces, a unit of Deathrattle skeletons and Fellbats. Skeletons are excellent tactics and objectives grabbers that are hard to ignore but expensive to fully remove. Bats are superb at that early flanks tactic, taking covering fire to the face and just being obnoxiously everywhere.

Leading the generals regiment is Mannfred, a force multiplier wizard (2) and technical piece with a fun ability to make a redeploy work going into combat, access to a fight first rampage and an extra attack to nearby Deathrattle units when he kills models with that fight first. With the debuff heavy spell lore of Soulblight with things like Prison of Grief (fight last) and Waste Away (-1 DMG) make enemy units regret being within 12″ in the hero phase. The bloody hammers of this are the new and improved Black Knights. A reinforced unit of these things is a chunk of 30 health on a 4+ save with charge damage, crit mortals and extra rend from the formation ability. Add to this the Deathly Invocation healing and Endless Legions unit recursion and the power is clear. Dario took two of them and another reinforced grave guard unit on top. Brutal.

I think the standout feature of this list is the two drop package, something of a novelty in a faction that often brings a heavy hero load out with at least three regiments. If you’re playing with aggressive cavalry and can mess with activation order, that early double will end a lot of games.

Congrats to Dario for recovering after a round 1 loss and taking his skellibobs to an excellent 4-1 finish.

Fittsy: We’ve got a 1st place here from Jesse Day with Nighthaunt. Great work Jesse!

This is a nice interesting list to chat about as there are some really different selections in the list building. The first thing we see is that this is a 4 drop list rather than the 2 or 3 drops we normally see. This allows Jesse to take an interesting selection of heroes. Good on ya Jesse for taking Cthonic Sorceries too which opens up a +1 to charge from the Mortalis (which is why I lean towards taking these, assuming a nerf to some of the others of course) and some mortal damage from the Vault of Souls.

The General’s regiment starts out pretty normally with Lady O, Reinforced Bladegheists to take the buff from the season’s rules and 10 Hexwraiths, which are hard to take down. Then we’ve got a surprise pick in a reinforced unit of Myrmourn Banshees, we do see them from time to time, but not that often. With 2 attacks each Rend 2 and Damage D3, they can really slap, especially if they’re in the bubble to get +1 attack from the artefact (once per battle).

Then we get back to Reikenor, who is present in almost all lists currently. 2 units of 2 Dreadblades for the teleporting around and stealing objectives, which is incredibly useful and incredibly frustrating for opponents. We’ve got Awlrach in here, who is great for teleporting the Bladegheists or Myrmourns into within 7 inches. This gives a threat that the opponent needs to take into account or pay the consequences.
Last but not least we have the Krulghast who isn’t making it into many lists but who helps to provide some nice defence by providing a 12” bubble of ignore the 1st wound in each phase, this is nice for Reikenor as you know he’s going to take 1 damage every hero phase otherwise and helps to support other units like Lady O and the foot troops. As each wound comes with a decent cost in Nighthaunt (many would argue not enough at the moment), negating up to 5 wounds per unit, each turn can really add up over the game. The Krulghast is the bearer of the Artefact and Trait and Jesse rounds out the list with the classic choice of Ruler of the Spirit Hosts (bring back a unit at half strength OPB and +1 attack in a 12 bubble OPB).

Carson: Wow, what a truly awful list! I don’t know what Carson was thinking bringing exclusively a reinforced block of Ironguts in his general’s regiment. Is he trying to minimize the amount of units vulnerable to priority target? What a moron.

And a Frostlord with the Fang of Ghur? It’s almost like he realized that Gruesome Trophies doesn’t apply to the Stonehorn’s companion weapons, and that the Frostlord is rarely in the same spot as other units un his army. Idiotic.

And imagine running Frost Sabres, Gnoblars, and Gorgers for board control and tactics instead of just leaning into more Gluttons. The education system in Canada must be abysmal for him to come to that conclusion.

Lastly, running the mawpit for mortal wound spam is lame and dumb, and everyone should make fun of Carson for running this subpar, bone headed list. Shame on Carson, I say. Shame!

Griff: The return of Morathi and bow snakes! With the new way of building lists it’s been interesting seeing how people incorporate snake units while still trying to get some priests and witch aelves in there to have your cake and eat it too. I think Matthias has done a nice best of both worlds with this list.

While the bow snakes aren’t near as nuts as they used to be with losing crit mortals and Morathi’s shoot in hero phase ability, they still perform well with a reinforced unit getting 30 shots off, autowounding on 5s if they didn’t move that turn, making “covering fire” a nice command point spend on them. They’re also a great recipient of the honor guard buffs depending on the matchup should you not want to add them to the Shadow Queen. (I know, it’s nuts/fun she can be “honor guarded”)

With little Morathi doing spell slinging, it’s still a good idea to bring some doomfires to maximize that output which he did here, and reinforced witches continue to be great blenders with the changes to combat range and morale. Biggest change up I’ve seen from some lists is the Hag Queen on Cauldron with some of the less popular artifacts (that I’ve seen at least). I’m still biased towards Slaughter Queens this index, but I can we why he went with a Hag Queen with having the Master of Poisons, the crit mortals on the Hag gives more opportunity for that to go off. I know that definitely helped in the game against OBR, and as a Fyreslayer player shutting down potential recursion can really mess with your day. Also if the S2D list had the typical nurgle marked warrior block, killing just one of those bad boys with the cauldron limits their tankiness with no rally access.

I know the Khainite Pendant has been very popular lately to try and get an early super charged Sacrament of Blood prayer off, but Sevenfold Shadow is an interesting change up to get a once per game teleport. Expanding the utility of the Cauldron to claim a far objectives, get out of a combat you don’t want to be in, or pin down a unit to stop their rally that you haven’t touched yet. Trickiest thing is the bigger base on the Cauldron to not get boxed out of that, but by later game with the amount of killing power in the list it shouldn’t be too difficult. Great mix of hard hitters and chaff to protect important things, and Morathi is a weird mix of both with her wound cap, you don’t want to trigger it too early but in a pinch she can help protect weaker units since she can’t be one shotted by a Kavalos death charge. All in all a fun looking list that I’m glad to see did well, except against the resident boogeyman of Nighthaunt.

Book Review – Day of Ascension

A Genestealer Cults novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky

The Genestealer Cults get A* treatment with Adrian Tchaikovsky taking them into the world of the Black Library in this novel set on the forge world of Morod.

From the book:

On the forge world of Morod, the machines never stop and the work never ends. The population toils in the mines and factoria to protect humanity from the monsters in the void, while the Adeptus Mechanicus enjoy lives of palatial comfort.

Genetor Gammat Triskellian seeks to end this stagnant corruption. When he learns of a twisted congregation operating within the shadows, one which believes that the tech-priests are keeping people from their true salvation – a long-prophesied union with angels – he sees in them an opportunity to bring down Morod’s masters and reclaim the world in the name of progress.

But sometimes, the only hope for real change lies in the coming of monsters.

Morod is a grim and dark place where humans work out their lives for the Mechanicus and for the factories of the Imperium and are then fed back into the system when they die. As well as losing children to disease and industrial accidents they are also levied to join the ranks of the Skitarii… ‘join’ meaning being remade as Mechanicus cyborgs.

But within this forge world there lies a dark secret… not all the humans are as pure blood as they may appear and they are helping hide their ‘ancestors’ who are even less so.

We all love Genestealer Cults right…(?) they exist in the heart of the Imperium bring about destruction from within… but given what the Imperium does are they really ‘bad’. Tchaikovsky effortlessly brings characters to life (or to a metallic equivalent of life), with a scheming TechPriest, as assassin and a faithful Mago… all wanting change on the world of Morod. Whilst the ‘victor’ may appear clear from the setting of the novel (it is a ‘Genestealer Cults novel’ after all) the direction of the book, dialogue and descriptions remain fun and interesting throughout.

And I defy you not to want to pick up a Genestealer combat patrol, or a box of Skitarii after reading this. A really great book.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
