Top Three AoS Lists for The Northern Wastes GT

This is the top three AoS lists for The Northern Wastes GT that took place in Canada on the 31st of August and the 1st of September 2024. It saw 42 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

I’ve a back log of top 3 lists building up where I’m unable to source comments for one or two of the lists. I’ve made the decision to now publish these articles without that commentary. Just so you get to see the lists at least.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

Fittsy: We’ve got a 1st place here from Jesse Day with Nighthaunt. Great work Jesse!

This is a nice interesting list to chat about as there are some really different selections in the list building. The first thing we see is that this is a 4 drop list rather than the 2 or 3 drops we normally see. This allows Jesse to take an interesting selection of heroes. Good on ya Jesse for taking Cthonic Sorceries too which opens up a +1 to charge from the Mortalis (which is why I lean towards taking these, assuming a nerf to some of the others of course) and some mortal damage from the Vault of Souls.

The General’s regiment starts out pretty normally with Lady O, Reinforced Bladegheists to take the buff from the season’s rules and 10 Hexwraiths, which are hard to take down. Then we’ve got a surprise pick in a reinforced unit of Myrmourn Banshees, we do see them from time to time, but not that often. With 2 attacks each Rend 2 and Damage D3, they can really slap, especially if they’re in the bubble to get +1 attack from the artefact (once per battle).

Then we get back to Reikenor, who is present in almost all lists currently. 2 units of 2 Dreadblades for the teleporting around and stealing objectives, which is incredibly useful and incredibly frustrating for opponents. We’ve got Awlrach in here, who is great for teleporting the Bladegheists or Myrmourns into within 7 inches. This gives a threat that the opponent needs to take into account or pay the consequences.
Last but not least we have the Krulghast who isn’t making it into many lists but who helps to provide some nice defence by providing a 12” bubble of ignore the 1st wound in each phase, this is nice for Reikenor as you know he’s going to take 1 damage every hero phase otherwise and helps to support other units like Lady O and the foot troops. As each wound comes with a decent cost in Nighthaunt (many would argue not enough at the moment), negating up to 5 wounds per unit, each turn can really add up over the game. The Krulghast is the bearer of the Artefact and Trait and Jesse rounds out the list with the classic choice of Ruler of the Spirit Hosts (bring back a unit at half strength OPB and +1 attack in a 12 bubble OPB).

• The Fang of Ghur
• Touched by the Everwinter
Frost Sabres (70)
Gnoblars (120)

Faction Terrain
Mawpit

Carson: Wow, what a truly awful list! I don’t know what Carson was thinking bringing exclusively a reinforced block of Ironguts in his general’s regiment. Is he trying to minimize the amount of units vulnerable to priority target? What a moron.

And a Frostlord with the Fang of Ghur? It’s almost like he realized that Gruesome Trophies doesn’t apply to the Stonehorn’s companion weapons, and that the Frostlord is rarely in the same spot as other units un his army. Idiotic.

And imagine running Frost Sabres, Gnoblars, and Gorgers for board control and tactics instead of just leaning into more Gluttons. The education system in Canada must be abysmal for him to come to that conclusion.

Lastly, running the mawpit for mortal wound spam is lame and dumb, and everyone should make fun of Carson for running this subpar, bone headed list. Shame on Carson, I say. Shame!

Griff: The return of Morathi and bow snakes! With the new way of building lists it’s been interesting seeing how people incorporate snake units while still trying to get some priests and witch aelves in there to have your cake and eat it too. I think Matthias has done a nice best of both worlds with this list.

While the bow snakes aren’t near as nuts as they used to be with losing crit mortals and Morathi’s shoot in hero phase ability, they still perform well with a reinforced unit getting 30 shots off, autowounding on 5s if they didn’t move that turn, making “covering fire” a nice command point spend on them. They’re also a great recipient of the honor guard buffs depending on the matchup should you not want to add them to the Shadow Queen. (I know, it’s nuts/fun she can be “honor guarded”)

With little Morathi doing spell slinging, it’s still a good idea to bring some doomfires to maximize that output which he did here, and reinforced witches continue to be great blenders with the changes to combat range and morale. Biggest change up I’ve seen from some lists is the Hag Queen on Cauldron with some of the less popular artifacts (that I’ve seen at least). I’m still biased towards Slaughter Queens this index, but I can we why he went with a Hag Queen with having the Master of Poisons, the crit mortals on the Hag gives more opportunity for that to go off. I know that definitely helped in the game against OBR, and as a Fyreslayer player shutting down potential recursion can really mess with your day. Also if the S2D list had the typical nurgle marked warrior block, killing just one of those bad boys with the cauldron limits their tankiness with no rally access.

I know the Khainite Pendant has been very popular lately to try and get an early super charged Sacrament of Blood prayer off, but Sevenfold Shadow is an interesting change up to get a once per game teleport. Expanding the utility of the Cauldron to claim a far objectives, get out of a combat you don’t want to be in, or pin down a unit to stop their rally that you haven’t touched yet. Trickiest thing is the bigger base on the Cauldron to not get boxed out of that, but by later game with the amount of killing power in the list it shouldn’t be too difficult. Great mix of hard hitters and chaff to protect important things, and Morathi is a weird mix of both with her wound cap, you don’t want to trigger it too early but in a pinch she can help protect weaker units since she can’t be one shotted by a Kavalos death charge. All in all a fun looking list that I’m glad to see did well, except against the resident boogeyman of Nighthaunt.
