The Top Three AoS Lists

Lumineth Realm-lords
Hurakan Temple
Drops: 3
Spell Lore – Lore of Hysh
Manifestation Lore – Morbid Conjuration

General’s Regiment
Sevireth, Lord of the Seventh Wind (350)
• General
Hurakan Spirit of the Wind (250)

Regiment 1
Archmage Teclis and Celennar, Spirit of Hysh (590)
Vanari Auralan Sentinels (300)
• Reinforced

Regiment 2
Hurakan Windmage (140)
• Masterful Tactician
• Silver Wand
Hurakan Windchargers (190)
Ydrilan Riverblades (160)

Faction Terrain
Shrine Luminor

Peter: I’m very pleased to say that we’ve been joined by top US player Mckenzie Ewing (who you’ve probably seen appear quite a few times on our top 3). Mckenzie will be helping us out with comments on Lumineth, Idoneth, and Sylvaneth.

Mckenzie Ewing: So the list is very interesting as Mike is using the mobility of foxes even with the nerf. However, with Teclis as a magical powerhouse able to throw out the Morbid conjuration spells with ease, it creates a multitude of threats for the opponents to attempt to deal with. The sentinels provide an excellent range damage battery that your opponent has to deal with while you are getting mortal wound bombed by Teclis and Shackles thrown at your face. I like the variety of units post battle scroll and happy to see Mike pilot the list to a 5-0, job well done!

Stormcast Eternals
Vanguard Wing
Drops: 3
Spell Lore – Lore of the Storm
Manifestation Lore – Twilit Sorceries

General’s Regiment
Karazai the Scarred (480)
• General
Praetors (150)
Vanguard-Raptors with Longstrike Crossbows (340)
• Reinforced

Regiment 1
Celestant-Prime, Hammer of Sigmar (360) – Sergio Hammeros
Gryph-hounds (80)
Knight-Vexillor (120)
• Mirrorshield
• Staunch Defender
Vigilors (130)

Regiment 2
Neave Blacktalon (340)
Lorai, Child of the Abyss
Neave’s Companions

Connor Irwin: Congratulations to Dominic for an excellent showing for the shiny champions of Sigmar at GAF. Let’s take a look at what he brought to the table.

Starting from the bottom, Neave and her companions are an interesting choice. The RoR is widely considered more effective outside of a Stormcast army but brings with it an IDK wizard with a neat warscroll spell but no lore. Not to worry, free access to three interesting manifestations keeps Lorai busy. Twilit Sorceries isn’t one you see every day (ie Morbid… Still) and includes the spell portal, geminids, and palisade. All interesting tools for blocking and slowing down an unwelcome advance. Neave herself is a blender in the right company, and the whole package is capable of taking and swinging a punch, especially with some of the close proximity objectives have to wyldwoods in this season’s battleplans.

Moving up the list, big daddy prime perches in a regiment with some good stuff tech. Cheap and useful hounds to screen and win tactics, the knight-vex with all the trimmings (mirror for shooting cover, staunch for an in-territory OC boost), and lastly the ascendent vigilors to boost the hit chance on an unlucky enemy target in their sights for other stormcast units.

Speaking of Karazai, that murder machine with anger issues that would turn a Mangler squig green, sits atop this list as warmaster-general, unlocking the still-auto-include longstrikes and taking a unit of praetors for good measure. The combo here is Bodyguard for the Honour Guard 24-25 GHB season rule, putting in enemies in combat with the massive 140mm based Karazai while the praetors are wholly within 6″ of him (they always are) at a -1 to combat attacks. This pairs nicely with the praetor bodyguard mechanic (5+ ward for both them and Karazai while in combat range of him) and Karazai’s rampage lowering a unit in combat with him’s attacks by -1 as well. So Dominic flies his 20 health ragebeast on a 3+ save to somewhere useful, drops in his praetor safety blanket from azyr to turn on the brick wall and dares someone to try and lift him. If you don’t succeed in one go you’re probably in trouble since damage only adds more jaw attacks, Karazai’s best weapon. There are simply not a lot of armies that can pull that off, since very few reinforced hammers are still viable at -2 attacks. Coupled with longstrike covering fire support and vigilor +1 to hit buffing (frees up all-out-defense) you can see how these overlapping features are a recipe for success.

Important to note the absence of the stormportal, as this event was prior to the new tome, points, and unit releases… which all would hurt it not one bit. Love to see Stormcast good stuff getting it done so congratulations again to Dominic for the excellent results.

Kruleboyz
Light Finga
Drops: 3
Spell Lore – Lore of the Swamp
Manifestation Lore – Morbid Conjuration

General’s Regiment
Killaboss on Corpse-rippa Vulcha (290)
• General
• Slippery Skumbag
Man-skewer Boltboyz (220)
• Reinforced

Regiment 1
Snatchaboss on Sludgeraker Beast (320)
Gutrippaz (340)
• Reinforced
Kruleboyz Monsta-killaz (120)
Man-skewer Boltboyz (220)
• Reinforced

Regiment 2
Swampcalla Shaman with Pot-grot (120)
• Swamp Staff
Kruleboyz Monsta-killaz (120)
Kruleboyz Monsta-killaz (120)
Kruleboyz Monsta-killaz (120)

Noel Fundora: The double teleport and slipper Vulcha makes this list a nightmare to play against for pure melee armies. The death riders evidently had the speed to hunt them down, but the others not so much. And the big brick of Gutrippaz backed by Sludgey makes for a great hammer. Dense blob of wounds that’s -1 to be hit and packs a serious punch. MKs ever the efficient unit play a wonderful role as always.

Wargame Review: The Silver Bayonet

The Silver Bayonet is a unique tabletop wargame that stands out for its gothic, horror-themed setting and creative narrative depth. Designed by Joseph A. McCullough, known for Frostgrave, this game combines Napoleonic-era combat with supernatural elements, immersing players in a world filled with dark creatures, eerie missions, and intense atmosphere.

A photo from our introductory game

The game is structured to allow for both solo and player-versus-player (PvP) modes, which offers flexibility in how players experience it. You can play through individual scenarios or link battles in a campaign, weaving together intricate horror stories that evolve with each game. This progression makes for rich storytelling, as players face off against the monstrous horrors lurking in the shadows and develop their characters’ strengths and weaknesses.

Gameplay-wise, The Silver Bayonet shines in its simplicity but also has an element of unpredictability. The damage output can be highly variable, often leading to intense moments where a well-planned strategy might fall apart due to a sudden twist of fate. This can either add excitement or, for some, feel frustrating, as the randomness might detract from a sense of strategic control. Not every player will enjoy this variability, especially if they prefer a more predictable combat system.

My British Unit

Despite this, The Silver Bayonet’s strengths lie in its atmosphere and storytelling potential. Each game session feels like a chapter in a larger horror novel, where every choice and combat encounter builds suspense and deepens the narrative. For those who love storytelling and exploring dark, thematic worlds, this game is an excellent choice that brings a fresh take on tabletop wargaming.

If you’re interested in reading a battle report for The Silver Bayonet, Dave and I had an introductory game back in August, which we presented in a story format.

Age of Sigmar: Path to Glory Campaign III

We’ve done a number of Path to Gloey campaigns now, with both previous versions being map based and very admin heavy for myself.

The map from our second campaign – The Al’Vain Campaign

But we’re taking a different approach for our third campaign. And we’ll be playing this on Tabletop Simulator so you can play with like minded players around the world. Interested in joining? Just join our Path to Glory Discord Server.

The Basics

Each player taking part can choose whichever faction they wish and build an army consisting of 1,000 points.

There will be 9 campaign rounds of 2 weeks in which players can fight as many battles as they like against any opponents they like. However, only the first two aftermath sequences will apply for their army.

After the two weeks, the campaign moves into the next round, and each players lists expand ls by an additional 250 points. Players are free to remove and add units to make their list up to the new points total, but any renown and benefits learnt by units that are removed are lost forever.

Glory points are a thing of the past and of no consequence in this campaign. Only the experience system and quests part of the aftermath sequence will be used.

A new feature will be added for players called Ambitions. Players will be able to select two Ambitions each round to try and achieve. Ambitions are worth a number of points depending on how difficult they are to achieve. At the end of the campaign, the player with the most Ambition points wins!

For those wanting a little bit more of a challenge, we’ll also have Challenge mode. Here, you’ll select your starting list as normal, but at the end of the round, the units will be chosen at random from your chosen faction to make your list up to the new points total.

Ambitions

The whole campaign will revolve around Ambitions (think of achievements or Trophies on Xbox or PlayStation). Each round, players will declare which two ambitions they would like to achieve, they can fight as many battles as they like in that two weeks to try and achieve them. But remember,  only the first two aftermath sequences will apply to your roster.

Not able to play the games that round? That’s fine. You won’t gain any ambitions, but you will still be able to roll up two aftermath sequences so you don’t get left behind.

1 point Ambitions

  • Overcome: Win a major victory (by 5 or more victory points)
  • Sever the Head: Slay the enemy Warlord
  • Shield Wall: have your Warlord survive and all friendly units not destroyed within your own territory.

2 point Ambitions

  • Well Fought: Win a minor victory (with less than 5 victory point difference)
  • Manifest Mayhem: Complete a battle with three of more friendly manifestations on the battlefield.
  • Invade: Have your Warlord survive and all friendly units wholly within the opponents territory.
  • Conquer Lands: Control all 4 battlefield quarters at the end of the battle (a unit must be wholly within a battlefield quarter to hold it).
  • Seize Vantage Points: Control every piece of terrain at the end of the battle.

3 Point Ambitions

  • Total Domination: Complete a battle with no enemy units remaining on the battlefield.
  • Steel Defense: Complete a battle without having lost a single friendly unit.

4 Point Ambition

  • At the end of the battle, have no enemy units on the table and have no friendly units destroyed.

GT Win Rates

September 2024 Battlescroll

These are still early days for the new battlescroll, however it seems to have had very little effect on the Nighthaunt win rates at first glance.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!).

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

The aim of the above chart is to show how the lower rated players of between 300 and 399 elo are performing with the various factions. The figure in brackets denotes the number of games the data is based on.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Number of Wins)

The above chart breaks down the faction popularity by the number of wins each player achieved in the first 5 rounds of games at GT’s or GT+’s.

Number of GT Wins as Percentage

This chart shows the % breakdown for the number of wins players are achieving in the first 5 rounds at GT and GT+ events.

The Fabien Chart

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He recently stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

Positive Player Results

The below chart shows how many players as a % finished a GT or GT+ with a positive result (more wins than losses).

Consecutive Wins

This chart shows firstly the % of players with a negative result from 5 games at GT’s or GT+ in light blue for each faction.

Dark blue shows the percentage of players who achieved 5 wins from 5 in the first five rounds of a GT or GT+.

Orange shows the players who achieved four wins from the first four rounds of a GT or GT+ but were unable to achieve the full house and lost their round 5 match.

Grey shows the players who achieved three wins from three wins but were unable to win in their fourth round match.

Yellow shows all other players aside from those shown in the first three categories, who were able to achieve a positive result at a GT or GT+ i.e. 3 or more wins.

The light blue shows the percentage of players unable to achieve a positive result with the faction at a GT or GT+.

Manifestation Win Rates

This is a simple chart to show the manifestation win rates in GT games. The number in brackets denotes the number of games they were used in.

Drops Win %

Another slightly daft table to show the win rates based on the number of drops in a list.

Book Review: Dark Harvest by Josh Reynolds

In Dark Harvest, author Josh Reynolds brings his signature flair for dark fantasy and character-driven storytelling to the grim and haunted realms of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. Published under the Black Library banner, Dark Harvest offers readers a chilling, atmospheric tale set within the Mortal Realms, capturing the brutality and terrifying dread that define the Age of Sigmar universe.

The story follows the troubled witch hunter, Harran Blackwood, on a journey to the village of Wald, deep within the oppressive, fog-laden forests of the Realm of Ghyran. Tasked with investigating a series of strange and unsettling events, Blackwood finds himself entangled in the village’s dark secrets and dangerous traditions. Reynolds creates a foreboding sense of isolation, with Wald’s eerie landscape practically coming to life on the page as an entity all its own. The author excels at capturing the ominous atmosphere, drawing readers into a world that feels dense with shadows, secrets, and a creeping sense of dread.

Harran Blackwood himself is a compelling protagonist, embodying the quintessential, hardened, cynical hero. He’s a man burdened by his past and driven by a grim sense of duty, making him both complex and relatable. As he navigates Wald’s mysteries, Blackwood’s journey is as much about confronting his inner demons as it is about facing the terrifying supernatural threats lurking in the shadows. Reynolds does a remarkable job of making his internal struggle feel as intense as the external threats he encounters, making Blackwood a fully realised and sympathetic character.

The novel’s pace is well-crafted, combining slow-burn suspense with sudden, brutal bursts of action. Reynolds strikes an excellent balance between horror and intrigue, steadily peeling back the layers of Wald’s mystery while giving readers glimpses of the horrors that await. The villagers themselves are an interesting, uneasy cast of characters, each with their own secrets and motivations, adding to the pervasive feeling of unease. As Blackwood delves deeper into the village’s customs and beliefs, he discovers that some horrors are more than superstition.

What sets Dark Harvest apart from other Age of Sigmar novels is its commitment to the horror genre. Rather than focusing on large-scale battles or cosmic forces, Reynolds zeroes in on the more intimate terror that comes from isolation, distrust, and the unknown. The horror here is psychological as much as it is physical, which gives the story a unique edge within the Age of Sigmar setting. This approach also allows for a more grounded, character-focused narrative, making the reader feel the full weight of the terror that surrounds Blackwood.

Reynolds’s writing is vivid and atmospheric, capturing the strange beauty of Ghyran’s wild, overgrown landscapes while also giving them a sinister, corrupted feel. The descriptive language used to illustrate the forests and village makes Wald feel like a character in its own right, an ancient and eerie entity holding secrets that would be better left undisturbed.

Despite its many strengths, Dark Harvest might not be for everyone, particularly those looking for epic battles or expansive lore-heavy world-building often seen in Age of Sigmar. The story is tightly focused and self-contained, with more emphasis on mood, atmosphere, and suspense than on grand confrontations or complex mythology. However, for fans who appreciate a more intimate and horror-driven narrative, Dark Harvest will be a thrilling, haunting read.

Dark Harvest is a standout entry in the Age of Sigmar universe, delivering a dark, immersive story that explores the horror and mystery lurking within the Mortal Realms. Josh Reynolds has crafted a novel that will appeal to both Warhammer fans and horror enthusiasts, blending supernatural dread with a compelling character study. Dark Harvest serves as a reminder that sometimes, the greatest threats lie not in massive armies or divine beings, but in the darkness that dwells just beyond the edge of the village, waiting patiently to be discovered.

The Kasrkin are the elite of the elite. These special operatives are trusted with more potent weaponry – such as high-powered hot-shot lasguns – and are equipped with thicker carapace armour to protect them in the most dangerous killzones.

This multipart plastic kit builds a squad of 10 Kasrkin, Cadia’s unmatched special forces. These miniatures can be used as Kasrkin operatives in games of Kill Team or fielded with Astra Militarum armies in games of Warhammer 40,000. These highly-trained soldiers are armed with hot-shot lasguns fuelled by a back-mounted power-pack and can be equipped with various special weapons – including grenade launchers, hot-shot volley guns, and meltaguns. The kit includes loads of interchangeable heads and accessories to customise your kill team, plus components to build specialists like the camouflaged Sharpshooter, stimm-wielding Combat Medic, explosive Demo-trooper, and more.

Korsan, Corsairs of the Gate Pre-order Exclusive Edition

This is no joke, nor the invention of some PR team: Haqqislamite corsairs capture more prey than anyone else, but always by the rules of privateering, because the consequences of not complying with them would be swift and deadly.

Yamabushi Pre-order Exclusive Edition

Modern Yamabushi are veterans from the army, law enforcement, or the emergency services, but they can also be committed civilians who have retired to devote themselves to a contemplative hermit’s life in unpopulated regions, following the example of the Yamabushi from bygone eras. In spite of their secluded lives and isolation from society, the Yamabushi remain alert and are very aware of the situation around them. Their pledge to protect the balance of nature and the innocent compels them to stand up and fight when a just cause requires it. Thus, they may get involved, and very violently, for the sake of justice, so they can sometimes be found among the ranks of one side or the other if they believe the cause to be worthy and justified.

Warcrow Pre-orders

To do this, they have higher attack rolls, tougher units (higher Wound attribute) and even greater charge range (which gives them initiative to attack).

Northern Tribes

Lotta
On the battlefield

Lotta can add damage to your allies’ attack and defense, and give them Raging, which adds extra impact when charging your enemies.

What does she bring to your army?

  • Increases the will (VOL) and morale (MOR) of your unit.

What does he bring to your army?

  • His “Sharp Perception” ability makes him the ideal counterpart against the enemy’s game of Scouts and Ambushers.
  • His “Shrouded in Darkness” ability allows him to get close to his targets without the enemy being able to attack him.
