The Old World Top 3 Doubles Clash

This is the top three lists for the Old World: Doubles Clash that took place in Milwaukee on the 31st of January 2026. It saw 8 teams with 16 total players vying to be crowned doubles champions in a 3-game tournament. One of each of the doubles scenarios from the Matched Play guide was used and alliances were allowed to be chosen freely so we were able to see some unorthodox team combinations.

This tournament also used the latest faq that was released just a few days prior to the tournament so enjoy the latest results from a tournament format that has always personally been my favorite to play in.

What was different about list building for doubles than singles tournaments? What was the process and what were the end goals of your list when building?

I’ll start with the end goal. That was effectively to build something that was off-meta. We were calling it the Meme list, because it was mostly Ambushers. I think we had 5 drops total. The difference in list building this time was just finding ways to compliment each others lists, but also have them stand on their own, if needed. I sort of brought the board presence gameplan with the big Primal Warherd brick, and multiple US10+ scoring units in Ambush, and Kellen brought more heavy hitting units like Treemen, Tree-kin and his Spellweaver. It made it easy in the games to know what our roles were.

What worked well with your armies? Did you have any surprise off meta units that did better than expected?

Honestly, running a majority Ambusher off-meta list actually worked extremely well for us. I don’t know if that would translate to singles 2k events, but a lot of our opponents had to play a very reactive game and didn’t really take some of the lower profile Ambushers into account, like the Ungors. They seemed prepared for the scarier units like Treemen, Tree-kin and Preyton, but the Ungors got our opponents’ baggage trains in the two scenarios it was there for and contributed heavily to the Domination secondaries. Having a low number of drops on the table for turn 1 and 2 forced our opponents’ to close in and engage lower value targets like the Razorgor. A bunch of our off-meta units did great. The Treeman Ancient and regular Treeman absolutely carried game 3 for us. That was an incredibly impressive showing from them. I think they collectively scored over 1,200 kill points. But the Preyton was also a surprisingly good unit. All 3 games it outperformed my expectations, and never gave up points. Turns out dropping a T5 monster with decent output into your opponents’ backlines is actually pretty good.

What was your general strategy going into the tournament?

Have fun haha. We really didn’t think we’d do so well with this list, so our goal was to just play well and have fun. In seriousness though, we tried to use the terrain and our high mobility units (and Ambush deployment) to create smaller winnable combats rather than risking big open battles. Using the massive Warherd brick as a deterrent unit was very effective too. Nobody wants to engage a Beastlord with d6+4 S7 AP-4 attacks. Then using the Ambushers, generate as many points through objectives as we could.

What would you change in your lists going forward? I

t was so impressive, I’d find a way to fit a second Preyton haha

This tournament was days after the old world faq drop and this tournament went full send using all the new rules. Did you notice any differences with the new rules? What was better or worse with it?

Well we played against a list that had Cathay in round 1. And we immediately found that the balloons were less game dominating. They had a character balloon and a regular balloon. Since the output has been decently reduced on them, we just kind of ignored the character balloon and focused on taking out the regular one since its defensive profile is significantly weaker now. Worked in our favor quite well. Dryads having the extra pip of movement really worked well for us too. Bringing them out of Ambush, letting them get that bit closer to artillery and other favorable match-up units made them that bit more consistent, I think. Aside from that our armies didn’t really have anything impacted by the changes. But we like the changes overall.

Any closing thoughts?

Everyone should start running spam Ambushers, and if you’re a Beastmen player, run max Preytons, they’re actually much better in practice than I thought. S-tier unit.

What was different about list building for doubles than singles tournaments? What was the process and what were the end goals of your list when building?

The biggest difference between doubles and singles is looking out for all potential rules and gameplay interactions between you and your partner’s army. For example using my friend’s team, they ran a Cathay and Wood Elf double gunline list which on paper would have worked well, but in practice they forgot to account for the extra free forest terrain the Wood Elf player got to place, which REALLY blocked his cannons LOS and shooting arcs. The effects of stuff like that in play is hard to foresee unless you bring your lists to the table. So I recommend doing a trial run of your armies before joining any doubles tournaments.

What worked well with your armies? Did you have any surprise off meta units that did better than expected?

Our lists had great synergy; both wanted to get up the board as quickly and possible and both of us had super killy units (the Gor-Doombull brick and my Huscarls) that could carry the weight if the other got destroyed. In game 2 for example we lost the Doombull and his gors turn 1 due to some unlucky combat rolls, but my Huscarls were around to clean up the board and bring it to a draw instead of a loss. Off-meta wise, the Tzeentch Huscarl brick is something I haven’t seen a lot in tournament WotS lists but it just feels so strong. Enchanting Aura alongside Daemonic Vessel, Totem of Wrath, and two assailment spells that function like Viletide (Daemonic Familiars and Shadowed Assailants) is no joke. Three attacks on each rider at S6 with AP4 and rerolling 1s to wound while striking before them, even when counter charging is just insane.

What was your general strategy going into the tournament?

For me and my partner, his Big Gor-Doombull brick and Dragon Ogre heavy list did a great job of distracting the enemy. He just marched everything forward while my Tzeentch Huscarl brick made its way into position and destroyed anything it got into combat with. It was impossible to stop too because everyone was so focused on the Shaggoth and regular DOs that enemy cannonballs and other shooting that could have threatened it never made its way towards the Huscarls. The Doombull brick itself was also extremely good in combat, allowing it to chew through whatever the sent to deal with it (except the Ogre Butcher brick in the second game, which managed to beat it as mentioned).

What would you change in your lists going forward?

The Chaos Chariot didn’t really do much, so if I were to run this again I would drop that 100%. Two or three skinwolves would have done a better job of clearing out chaff and running through their backlines.

This tournament was days after the old world faq drop and this tournament went full send using all the new rules. Did you notice any differences with the new rules? What was better or worse with it?

The only difference was the change to how characters retire when not in combat. Before the FAQ it seemed most people played it as characters not fitting in the front rank had to retire to the back but could still cast spells, which was great since I could enter marching column with the Huscarls and still get my buffs off. With the new FAQ strongly implying they can’t contribute at all even outside combat, it meant there was never any reason to enter marching column anymore.

Any closing thoughts?

Doubles really feels like the most fun you can have playing The Old World. I recommend it to anyone on the fence 100%! You see more interesting lists and negotiating/strategizing with a teammate in game adds another layer that is both fun and tactical.

Fabien: Cities right now is not in a great place: the most powerful/effective build (SoG Cavaliers with Zenestra and Cannons) is subpar compared to other armies, and is frankly quite boring to play. That’s why I went with my list (and also because new Tzeentch was not out in time for Cherokee).

This list is fun to play, with a ton of tools but it has 2 mains weaknesses: lack of damage (especially against good armor) and high randomness (hello Command Corps). And the downside of having a ton of tools is that the decision tree is massive, so it’s easier to miss the optimal play, in which case the army will really struggle.

The list plays as a castle formed by the 4 units of Command Corps as screens, around the Fusil-Major, with the remaining heroes and cavaliers safe in the back. The goal is to win on primaries and eventually score enough tactics to win the game, but it’s usually small wins. The KO RoR brings the tools for the list to work: turning off wards (4 of my 5 games were against armies with army wide 5+ ward) and teleporting Command Corps then moving 3″ with the Advance in Formation order (it doesn’t have the MOVE keyword so it works after setup). Finally the Cavaliers are the only source of consistent damage in the list so they need to be protected until they can go into a valuable target.

Final Tournament Placings

First Tournament Experience: Andrezzo’s Big Day Out

This week we’ve got something a little different for you, I’ve been wanting to scrape the brains of the community out there for more thoughts about competitive AoS. So why not start at the start, so to say! We’ve had a few people in the discord recently who have been attending their first tournaments and I thought this was a good chance to grab a random bystander and grill them to get the best info on starting out at tournaments for you all.

If you’re someone who is interested in heading to a tournament for your first time, I’ve also got a guide for first timers and some reflection on how to move on up from there. None of which Andrezzo seems to need as he’s already killing it out there and having a ball. On with the interview!

Fittsy: First up, thanks for agreeing to this interview, Andrezzo! I’m really interested in your experience at your first tournament and what it felt like. What sort of armies do you play and how long have you been playing Age of Sigmar for?

Andrezzo: Thanks for this opportunity, make me feel much more important than I am… I’m not new to the hobby, I started too many years ago with WHFB 5th edition with my brother, then 7th edition and 40k with some friends but when adult life occurred I stopped for several years. Finally my children was old enough to play (at least that’s what I told myself) I jumped back again in 40k but when I discovered a club nearby I enjoyed it and here I discovered about AoS. And it was love at first game. I bought the Seraphon’ spearhead (it seems fair to begin again with the first army I ever played), then the second one and I jumped completely into the hobby. This was in October. Then suddenly my father passed away and the only way I find to relax, besides my family, was the hobby: I painted more minis in two months than in my entire life, I played at least once a week and I can state that warhammer saved my mental health in these months. To summarise, I have been playing Seraphon (and AoS) since November.

Andrezzo’s Krozigor, looking great and they smash on the tabletop too

Fittsy: Never underestimate your own importance! It’s great to get the perspective of somebody new to the hobby and going to tournaments. Sorry to hear about your father! Good to hear though that the hobby could help you through a tough time. Wow though, so you’re only a couple of months into your AoS adventure and already hitting the tournaments, that’s amazing. What sort of list did you run?

Andrezzo: As I said I started from the two seraphon’ spearhead, I mixed them together (proxying something else) and playing step by step I realised what I enjoy the most and which style I preferred. I don’t like the idea to copy champions’ lists, so I preferred to create one of my own learning by mistakes and losses. I really love the new saurus and kroxigor design, and although their ability is quite strange and hard to activate I decided to make them the core of my list, and my personal record so far is playing with 40+9 of them! Then I tried (and still doing) to balance the rest of the list around them and the sunclaw starhost battle formation. After several adjustments (I must thank the Woehammer community discord for the help) I decided to bring this list.

Fittsy: That is an interesting list and you’ve chosen a good path by tailoring the list to the way you want to play. It sounds like you used the community well to get some feedback. Is there anything else that you did to prepare for your first tournament?

Andrezzo: I asked for advice to some friend of course but mainly, my army works well if every unit can buff the others, so I arranged at home a table with the three battleplans to try some set-up, to try understanding how could I manoeuvre my army and prepared two or three strategies for each game. And of course I made a match with my children in the battleplan I have never played before. With this method I have prepared in advance the set up and I could deploy my drops without over thinking.

Fittsy: That’s a good idea to practice the deployments. It’s something I recommend to newer players. Just to get a feel for that deployment and make the start of the game easier on yourself! Running through the first turns definitely helps too. Also, cool to involve your kids in your practise! I wouldn’t recommend having kids just for that reason but it’s definitely a side benefit! After all your preparation did you feel nervous about going to your first tournament?

Andrezzo: Having children is a very long-sighted plan to become a better Warhammer player XD. You’re not just preparing for a tournament; you’re playing with your sons, and nobody can blame you for that! My aim was to end every game with something still alive on the fifth turn; a bonus goal was being close to winning in the last round. Surprisingly, I was nervous. I had played rugby for almost two decades, and other sports before that, and my thoughts were: ‘OK, I’ll definitely lose every game, but this is the worst thing that can happen: nobody is going to beat me up’. Nevertheless, I was still anxious. Luckily, the tournament was at my own club, so I got involved in the preparation of tables and stuff to keep my mind busy. Then my first game started. I was paired with (I don’t like to say ‘against’, it’s a fun game, not a fight) one of the best players in my region, who had an army I wasn’t familiar with (Hellsmith of Hashut set up for heavy firing), and I had the first turn. I spent the first two CP redeploying the Slann after a bad move I made, and unbinding the Malevolent Maelstrom I had cast… But with a bit of luck and some bad rolls from my opponent, we had a nice game. I learnt a lot (he was very nice, patient, and taught me a lot) and the game was decided in the last turn, ending 51 to 56 in his favor. So, I accomplished my bonus goal in the very first game! I was happy but exhausted, and I hadn’t eaten yet! Now I could lose every match and still be satisfied with my tournament…

This looks like a nicely set up tournament… maybe I should head over to Italy for a weekend 😉

Fittsy: Ah, that’s nice to be at your own club for your first tournament! That sounds like a really exciting first game. What did you eat for lunch afterwards? And how did your other games go?

Andrezzo: The game was really close, but again, that was more down to my opponent’s bad luck than my own skill, of course! We spent lunchtime together (a sandwich and a slice of crostata—a traditional Italian jam tart) talking about the game and the local AoS scene. My second game was, once again, with a very experienced player. He was bringing his incredibly tough and successful Troggoth list (18 of them!) for a ‘last hurrah’. Even so, the atmosphere was extremely chill and relaxed; it was a very fun game and he even taught me a couple of tricks with Morbid Conjurations. My 20 Saurus met a grizzly end against his wall of Troggoths, but nevertheless, the game was quite close and ended 52-59. Finally, I played with another club member who ran a Nighthaunt army with a Black Coach, Lady Olynder, and plenty of Bladegheists and Pyregheists. The battleplan was Linked Ley Lines, and he just couldn’t shift my 20 Saurus from the central objective while my heavy hitters reached the centre of his army and blew it apart. Another fun game! We were both exhausted and ran out of time at the end of the third turn. It was my first win, 42 to 34, and the game was definitely in my favor but who knows…

Fittsy: 3 good games is the best result you can have. Tournament games are a really great place to learn. While you’re really focussed, you can learn some really important things to do or not to do. Are you already planning to go to more tournaments?

Andrezzo: Yeah, the very next day I negotiated with my wife the tournament deal: once a month I can attend one tournament, once every quarter a two days tournament. I did have a great time, I feel to have improved massively and understood that, like in sports, you can train hard as you like, but the real grow comes from real games and matches, and if nobody can beat you up even better!

Andrezzo himself at the tournament. I can see the killer instinct in those eyes, I reckon he will be a real threat at tournaments soon.

Fittsy: That’s awesome! Great to hear that you had such a good time and it would be cool to find out how you go after a few more tournaments! Would you do anything differently next time and do you have any tips for other players thinking of going to their first tournament?

Andrezzo: I’m not aiming to be a ‘pro’ player (just a better one, I hope!), but so far I’m loving the process. With this schedule, I can reach almost 100 games per year (around 50 club nights and 40 tournament games), which I think is a great way to learn and grow. My principal aim is to be a solid sparring partner for the guys in my club—who are very strong right now—and to provide a challenge that helps them improve as well. I’m pushing forty (OMG!), but I’ve found a wonderful way to spend my free time, bond with my kids, and meet new friends who share the same passion. I live in Italy, and while I can’t speak for other countries, the AoS scene here is incredibly friendly. I feel welcome everywhere I go, and I believe the spirit of the game is the same all around the world. So, if you’re nervous about playing in a competitive environment: don’t be! Jump in and give it a go. You might not always have ‘hot dice’ like I did, but you will definitely meet great people and improve your game. Beyond that ‘moral’ message, I found that preparing my battleplan in advance was a huge help. It acted as an anchor and allowed me to make more sensible choices (or at least, that was my impression!). Last but not least: don’t wait until you know every single army, warscroll, or possibility because you never will. Just be confident in what your own list can do; know your strengths and your weaknesses. You can’t control the battleplans or what your opponent brings, so don’t overthink it. Be good with what you bring to the table, set a goal for the tournament, and enjoy it. If you don’t reach your goal, the worst that can happen is that you’ll have to try again next time. And remember: even if you lose every game, so what? No one is going to beat you up anyway!

Fittsy: You’re very passionate and your drive is clear. It looks like you’ve found a hobby which you’re enjoying very much. There is a great community around AoS and that’s a large part of what makes it so much fun to take part in tournaments! Thanks very much for taking your time to do the interview, it’s been a pleasure! Keep up the awesome attitude and hope to see you in a top 3 lists article soon!

It was a ball to chat with Andrezzo about his experience. It was nice to think back to my own times before starting heading to tournaments.

If you’re in the area and want to check out these events, here’s the link to the one Andrezzo participated in: Battle of Melorian – 08/02/25 Circolo il Fortino Marina di Pisa. If you’re in the area, you can also get in contact with the club he’s a part of on Instagram!

Andrezzo really worked hard on his own preparation and I think he’s got some great advice there for new tournament players! So get out there, sign up to a tournament, and join in on all the fun!

GT Win Rates

As always, these are global stats from various sources around the internet.

Win Rates Over the Last 4 Weeks

Estimated Win Rates if the Player Skill Levels were Equal

That’s a mouthful of title isn’t it!?

Essentially, what I’m trying to do here is work out what the win rates would be if the skill levels of all the players were the same (Yes, I realise this is nearly impossible to calculateBut I’m playing around here).

How it works is by calculating the average Elo of all the players that have had matches since the December battlescroll dropped. This worked out as 431.1. I then calculated how much difference there was between a factions average Elo shown in our original win rate graph to this overall average. The difference between these two figures was then turned into a percentage difference over/under the 431.1 elo. I then increased or decreased their win rate by this percentage (But this isn’t as simple as deducting or adding the percentage different to the win rate – you have to work out for instance what 4% may be of say 53% and then apply that. For Example – 10% of 40% is 4%)

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the Age of Sigmar stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!). Neither to 600-699 rated players. Where we start to see the swell in players possibly chasing the factions with more favourable rules is in players rated less than 600 Elo.

To make it a bit easier to see the effect of higher skilled players, I’ve added the below chart this week which breaks down each factions player base as a percentage.

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

The Fabien Chart

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

% of Players with a Positive GT Result

Ideally you would want 50% of the players having a positive results for a truly balanced game system.

Consecutive Wins

This chart shows firstly the % of players with a negative result from 5 games at GT’s or GT+ in purple for each faction.

Dark blue shows the percentage of players who achieved 5 wins from 5 in the first five rounds of a GT or GT+.

Orange shows the players who achieved four wins from the first four rounds of a GT or GT+ but were unable to achieve the full house and lost their round 5 match.

Green shows the players who achieved three wins from three wins but were unable to win in their fourth round match.

Light blue shows all other players aside from those shown in the first three categories, who were able to achieve a positive result at a GT or GT+ i.e. 3 or more wins.

Battleplan Win Rates

For those of you who are counted among our legendary Patreons, you can download the stats database below which now includes warscroll win rates and lists.

On top of this there is some added extras in the form of a faction dive into Seraphon.

Book Review Wreckers: Disaster in the Age of Discovery

A look at some of failures of Europeans in their attempts to conquer the world; by Simon Park

I often read non-fiction books on the commute to work (audio books), and until this year rarely reviewed them on Woehammer. And so I found myself listening to Wreckers – Disaster in the Age of Discovery.

From the Book

Wreckers sinks the old narrative of imperialism. In place of swashbuckling adventurers bringing home great riches. We see a series of failures on the part of the Europeans. Christopher Columbus suffers several shipwrecks and dies trying to persuade the world that America was, in fact, China. Vasco de Gama, known as the first European to reach India by sea, was in fact guided across the Indian Ocean by a Gujrati pilot.

Wreckers taps into a thirst for stories of the sea and throws myths we have long been told about European empire-building overboard, transporting readers instead on voyages tragically cut short and introducing them to new characters whose lives illuminate dark spots of a foundational period in world history. By looking at the disasters rather than the accomplishments we get a new and exciting take on history.

Review

Unfortunately, this is definitely a case of don’t judge a book by it’s cover… there are a list of shipwrecks and some of the tales involve them but most of them involve no shipwrecks and no tales of the sea. This most definitely feels like a bait and switch of promising something unique whilst immediately going to Columbus, Vasco de Gama and the Conquistadors.

So the stories will have been heard before and whilst Simon Park tries to shed new light on them, or make it clear where locals helped the Europeans, there is not enough different from other books on the subject. And that is a disappointment as I had hoped for new stories, especially those from a non-British perspective…

But in the end it was mostly covering ground (or sea) that an occasional reader of history like myself has already read.

Verdict

If you need a quick reminder of the flows of the European conquest and colonisation of the world then this does provide a good overview and tries to include the non-Europeans involved. But that often comes across as trying to share any responsibility. I’m sure that isn’t the authors intention but by attempting to bring to light the involvement of others, he absolves the Europeans of the time of some of guilt.

If you are a regular reader of history, there’s little new here to recommend it though.

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Fittsy’s AoS List Challenge – February means Music

What is this all about?

Looks like you’ve all gotten the hero you deserve now… with a great lack of list challenges floating around the internet… I’m looking at you Plastic Craic. I’ve taken it into my own hands to right this wrong and start with a flat out ridiculous list challenge which is of absolutely no help to the competitive scene!

For the first one, I announced things over on the Woehammer discord to get things going:

“Ah, I’m excited about this and next week is my birthday so here goes with the first of  “Fittsy’s List Challenge”. (I still have no idea for the prize yet but I’ll mull it over. @Woehammer_Peter open to ideas here 😉 ). So for my first one, I’m going to throw it out nice and wide and creative. I’m looking for the best song themed list because “it’s my party and I’ll  cry if I want to” 😉 I will be outrageously biased in my assessment of them and am not setting any success criteria in advance 😄 Feel free to send it with a description of what it does / how it is song related or not… there are no rules here!

Bonus points to anyone who can come up with a better name for it. (Points for alliteration or puns)

Oh, there is a rule… you need to send in the lists in at the latest in precisely a week’s time from this message!” I didn’t even manage to stick to the last part because I mixed up which day I’d sent the message. Oops. I hope you weren’t expecting anything else from me at this point 😛

Since this is the music edition… I’ll start you off with the song which has somehow been stuck in my head for the last week:

The deal is that the winner will be crowned the “List Legend” on the Woehammer discord… and at some point, maybe a sponsor will throw themselves at me and ask to support the List Challenge 😉😉

The Best of the Rest

We’ll start with Peter because he can’t win it anyway, that’d be silly! Talking about silly, he even submitted two!

First up we’ve got one riffing directly off the challenge itself! I like the combination of Slaanesh and the theme… but this isn’t good enough to win it.

Wait wait wait… did I not specify that this needs to be Age of Sigmar? Oops, no. And that’s how you get Old World submissions! That thing is so long, I’m not even going to paste it in here… you’ll have to check it out directly in the discord. Peter went with “Walk? Like an Egyptian [1997 pts] Warhammer: The Old World, Tomb Kings of Khemri, Nehekharan Royal Hosts, Open War” which is really leaning into the pun side of things and I like this direction. But no points for Old World lists… unless you lot are keen in which case someone should set up a List Challenge for that too.

Envoy flipped the script with this one and I like it. Bonus points for a Nighthaunt list. This was definitely tickling my fancy but it’s been edged out by the winner which we’ll get to soon.

Sylvaneth are prevalent in the meta currently (rightfully so) and I get shivers just seeing a Spirit of Durthu let alone two!

Last but not least of the not winning Lists is this one from Rose of Winter heading into the heavier stuff with a Sabaton song!

The Winning List!

I like the theme here… I’m a sucker for Zombies. I also really like the mix. This could have just been a spam list with all Deadwalker zombies but Kars took the chance to remind us that there are actually a bunch of other Zombie units too! Downside is I’ve had the song stuck in my head for ages since asking for entries!

Now you do too! 😛 Don’t thank me, thank the “List Legend” Kars!

Fittsy’s Bonus List

I mean look, there is to my knowledge one sign with a Fitzy in it so I had to riff off that 😉

This video clip is more than a little ridiculous so you can see why I not only wanted to write a list for this but am seriously thinking of collecting this as an army now 😉

Next month’s challenge!

Give me your best anti-magic lists! Lumineth and Tzeentch armies are going to be blasting their way onto the scene again with fancy magic bullshit and I don’t like it. This time I’ll be looking for more competitive serious options. Surprise me with your ingenuity and you can wear the crown that is the “List Legend” too!

Join the Woehammer discord here: https://discord.gg/BMJm3FPv

and throw your lists right at me in here: https://discord.com/channels/826535246392197132/1385032874452848650

P.S. If your’e a Lumineth or Tzeentch player, I don’t really hate your armies. Good luck with all that spell casting and other complicated stuff you’ve been lumped with!
