Top Three AoS Lists for Guts & Glory Club Tournament

This is the top three AoS lists for the Guts & Glory Club Tournament that took place in the USA on the 11th and 12th of March. It involved 48 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

You may be aware of our recent collaboration with Stormkeep and presenting out stats on YouTube. We’ll Mrigank of Stormkeep fame has managed an impressive 5-0, but not with Stormcast as you’d expect, but Bonereapers! I’ll let Mrigank explain the list.

Mrigank Jha: So pivoting away from the traditional Arkhan Magic + Infantry based lists , this list doesn’t focus on hordes of Mortek Guard. Roar makes them vulnerable and the meta has too many ranged horde killers (Ogors, Skaven, Stormcast, LRL). So, keeping the 2×6 stalkers for Blenders, this list goes towards Catapults. All out Defence and Armor may make it seem weak, but the special ammo is what is important. Ogors, LRL, and Gitz, the three big bad, are fairly low bravery, and Gitz in particular, has small wound heroes. Being able to wreck a giant Grot unit or Squigherd unit. Taking out Gnoblars entirely the same way is amazing. Sniping a Sentinel Captain to turn off empower, and in case of a Slaves to Darkness matchup, sniping an Ensorcelled Banner is amazing.
Stalkers are amazing with Mystic shield and re roll saves on defence or additional rend and damage on offence (can increase rend even further with Bludgeon)
So, for my matches, I mainly did that. Use catapults at key targets, and push Mortek guard out early as Stalker screens. Stalkers to counterattack. Necromantic Mastery (heroic action) with Bone Tithe Shrieker to add 1 to hit rolls and stop Inspiring Presence and Rally. In instances of where your opponent leaves a GC out in the open, the special ammo can help you snipe it on a lucky roll. You can also use this one to break coherency in entire units strung out as screens

I faced LRL, Ogors, Anvilgard Cites, Skaven and Gitz. The Catapult range and threat meant they often chose to target it instead of my other threats , the ones that take objectives and its fairly difficult to kill catapults with 12 W 4+ save and reducing a rend.
I used the Kavalos as a fast threat, objective taker, Mortek guard as screens / first line of defense, and stalkers to get into the thick of it.

Old book HoS take the podium! With a new book around the corner east to forget, this is just a current, often nerfed, HoS list. It has all of the stars, Sigvald, Epitome, and Glutos, with a lot of Blissbarb. Blissbarb are as much the heart of the list as the heroes, ok archery and a fantastic source of Depravity Points (DP). The Epitome build is very tanky (for HoS) with an extra wound and one of the new Ghurish enhancements – Fuelled by Ghurish Rage (once per battle 3+ ward). Add in the Flaming Weapon, and it’s still a very dangerous unit.

Back to the DP – Hedonites are really a summoning army, everything is fragile (not Glutos), just now they can use Revel in Pain as well while they have the points. You’re forced into an unenviable choice of removing units (Generating DP) or heroes (and being shot) – very hedonistic. With the Cockatrice to act as blockers, objective getters and generally be pains it’s a very annoying army that can react to most situations. The list even has 2 ways to snipe out Galletian Champions – Galletian Sharpshooters for all of the Blissbarb and Mesmering Mirror, swingy but if it goes off…. Both of the other spells do mortal wounds as well based on 6 dice. Dreadful Visage is very effective against screens etc, if it does damage it reduces Bravery by 1. Orcs hate it.

That combination of threats was very effective. Laron’s opponents had limited or no shooting, that shooting was frequently shorter ranged. Combined with effective heroes and the mortal wound output it’s hard to counter unless played just right. That Epitome is a thing of nightmares….

One last hurrah for the old book, this time around we’re lucky enough to have Carl’s comments on hid list

Carl Stokes: This was the final ride of the Warp Lightning Vortex in KO and I was determined to send it off with a bang!
I’ve always felt that KO struggle into high tempo combat heavy armies that can either shrug off the heaps of rend -1 shooting I can bring to bear and/or close the gap in one turn to crack open my boats.

Enter Gotrek.

He completely changes the way opponents have to think about KO. The things I used to be very concerned about (Kragnos, Varanguard, Mawkrushas) are now the armies I feel extremely favored into. Gotrek forces combat armies to forfeit the alpha strike into my boat bunker and allow me to seize the initiative and dictate the flow of the game.

With old KO rules, this also meant that forcing me to go first just allowed me to perfectly lob a WLV into my opponent’s backfield and then hide the Ironclad behind a layer of 10 Thunderers and a Khemist who would guarantee my opponent was at -1 to hit in close combat. And of course, should they fail to kill the Thunderers and Khemist, a very angry dwarf was right around the corner…

The best part is how easily this list transitions to the new book! Not only is this archetype alive and well, but because the warp lightning vortex becomes a free soulscream bridge and a few characters are easily swapped around, I can add 5 more new and improved Thunderers (that rally on a 4+) to the list and make it a one-drop. I’m always trying to spread the Gospel of Gotrek and I think the new KO tome will really demonstrate his utility in the faction.

FEC is a statistical anamoly – both Metawatch and TSN have them as a 50%+ faction, we have them at about 43% win rate. Who’s right? Well we don’t write about them that often so there aren’t that many podiums in the events we cover. But that could just be the low player representation.

Anyway the list, this is the “list” or the most common way we see FEC. A double reinforced Crypt Flayer unit with 2 x Crypt Ghoul screens, Terrorgheist, Archregents and Ghoul Kings. This gives the widest range of spells and summoning. It can summon, during the battle, up to another 9 Crypt Flayers and 20 serfs – this is really a 2660 point list. That’s key to beating them – don’t commit too early, force your opponent to bring most of their units onto the table so you don’t face an overwhelming force in Turn 2 or 3. Not taking Chronomatic Cogs is an interesting choice.

FEC really needs to get their buffs off (adding up to 4 attacks and a 5+ ward) so Cogs is almost mandatory. Only losing to Fyreslayers though is a testament to what the faction is capable of. Roll well and the Flayers are terrifying, very hard to kill and rally really well. In the matchups here they’ve taken down almost everything including Varanguard. With the new book announced it’s likely we’ll see more interest in the faction and enjoy those damn Flayers.

Peter: We previously mentioned that the flamekeeper charge was in the hero phase. This has been corrected to the combat phase.

Mike Stewart (of Team England fame) is on a personal mission to establish Fyreslayers as a meta-threat, and by Grimnir’s beard, he’s doing it.

There’s a surprising amount of tech and overlapping buffs in effect with this Fyreslayers list. The lynchpin to it all is the double Flamekeepers, who gain the ability to unleash a range of buffs depending on how many units have died nearby. Perhaps the most devastating of these options are a +1 damage effect to a unit, and the ability to make a unit charge in the combat phase – meaning a scary unit of 15 Hearthguard can suddenly threaten you in your OWN turn, which can make positioning/trading well for the opponent a complete nightmare.

To keep up on board control, given FS limited movement options, Mike has opted for a metric tonne of Vulkites. They’re not impressive on their own, but they provide excellent fodder for the Flamekeepers, and with their volume of attacks can still make for a great target for the +1 damage buff – or to just charge something and yoink the objective they thought they’d just taken, with relative impunity. Additionally, with Curse on the Runemaster, if it goes off, then the 30 Vulkites can pretty reliably just nuke something into oblivion with mortals.

Knowing a player of Mike’s calibre, I’m sure there’s all manner of extra sneaky plays baked into his list, but I think that covers the top line – a deceptively fast (with the out of phase charges) list full of ‘surprise hammers’ that creates plenty of ‘damned if you do/don’t’ scenarios for the opponent. Great work!

Declan: Well it seems like Squigs are the go-to option from the new Gloomspite Gitz book at the moment and another 5-0 registered. It great that there are so many squig armies already painted or getting painted – good to see the ladz getting their time at the top. Simon has taken a lot of units that recent readers will have seen, but he’s got some new ones as well. The Gobbapalozza makes an appearance, and it is great to see it. The models were always georgous, but apart from some hardcore Gitz Players (looking at Nathan of Honest Wargamer fame), they were rarely used. They are now more streamlined and able to hand out additional rend to shooting units – hence the 2 units of Moonclan Shootas here.

Simon has also taken the new underworld warband which – Grinkrak the Great – who can give models the chance to fight on death. Great for the large units of Cave Squigs in Simon’s army. You’ll need shooting to deal with this, and even so, D3 Cave Squigs will come back for each herder in the unit. But they do run away with no command abilities possible.

It continues to be a great list, but I do worry about the Cave Squig’s chances long-term against shooting armies. Only time will tell as people get more experience playing with and against the new book.

With only 630pts spent on battleline and a mere 25 models on the board, this list favours an intelligent approach where every piece needs to be played correctly. While 2 Maggoth Lords and 10 blightkings can both take and put out a decent amount of wounds they lack the footprint to reliably hold objectives on their own which means that Marco would be leaning heavily on the techy elements of his list and superior positioning to control the board. With a list like this, it doesn’t do to play cagey and reactively. You need to be aggressive and take decisive, perhaps risky, actions to get the best results.

This list has a lot of ways to inflict extra disease points to help supplement his damage output. If he chooses his battles carefully, Marco has the tools to remove important units from his opponent’s army with surgical precision. But he’d need to be cautious never to leave himself open to reprisal because with only 25 models in your whole army, even minor losses can cause big problems. Be’Lakor can neuter a particularly troublesome threat once per game if the dice are on your side. The Lord of Plagues with Tunnel Master is a troublesome Galletian Champion too – harder to put down than the average foot hero and thus requiring extra investment on the part of an opponent to deny your opportunity for battle tactics.

Surprisingly this list leans kind of heavily on magic. Bloab, Be’lakor and a Lord of Plagues with an Arcane Tome. They all have access to some great spells that really maximize this list’s potential but Nurgle is not a strong competitor in the magic game. Marco may have been lucky that his path to glory didn’t pit him against some of the wizardly boogiemen that are common right now like Tzeentch or Teclis.

Alice: This season, Ossiarch Bonereapers really have to work with what they have. With only 2 Galetian Champions in the army, neither exactly standouts, they often have to compensate in other ways. The lone boneshaper exists to pick up a few battle tactics, and has a pretty nice horde clearing spell.

The primary lineholders are the mortek guard, with the Deathriders acting as outriders to grab some objectives and score the faction’s unique battletactic. The units really holding the list up are the Necropolis Stalkers, which benefit heavily from the Galetian Vets battalion so both ranks can attack. In precision stance they can hit with 20 Rend -2 Damage 2 attacks from the primary weapon, and 6 Rend -3 Damage 3 attacks from the special Dread Falchions. While fully buffed from the Soulmason they can reroll 1s and get a bonus attack per model from the Liege. Few things can face a fully buffed unit of these alive and live to tell the tale.

The Crawlers round off the list with the only shooting attacks in the army. While the Rend 0 shots can miss often, that 5 damage will absolutely chunk anything it successfully does hit.

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for DaBoyz Golden Sprue GT that took place in the USA on the 4th and 5th of February. It involved 28 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

Big Waagh, you love to see it! Rumblings of their increased effectiveness in this new season – given their access to some excellent GCs – seem to have been on the money!

Ross has stuck with a fairly traditional core HQ of the double Warchanter (great in general but also give Big waagh points for existing), double Wurrgog ‘laser eyes’ prophets, the Mirebrute and the now probably undercosted Gnashtoof.

MSU Ardboyz are usually crucial in Big Waagh as cheap screens you can overlap in engagements for more Waagh point generation – and they’re backed up by a reinforced unit of Brutes who, while never tanky, are certainly less vulnerable with bounty hunters gone.

A token unit of gore gruntas as ‘fast’ flankers and one reinforced unit of Boltboyz for savage unleash hell potential and some good ranged MW projection round things out, with Soulsnare shackles proving an interesting tech pick to ensure the Waaghers get to charge on their terms – it’s cheap, so why not?

Overall, a great result for a struggling army – taking a W against super tanky armies like Bonereapers and Nurgle show the MW output in this formation can really shore up the weaknesses of a mono-Orruk list. Gratz to Ross!

Sons are in an interesting place in the new season. They’ve always played a very different game from the rest of AoS’s armies, and the lack of Galletian Champions can prove difficult given the new GHB’s battle tactics largely relying on their presence and function in your list.

And yet here is Tyler, bringing in a 4-0-1 and taking second place at DaBoyz. His list is a fairly standard Sons list, choosing to bring the generally more competitive 4 Mega-gargants and leaving Mancrushers at home. His choice to pile Eager for the Fight and the Amberstone totem on his Warstomper General means that he is one fast giant. Getting an average run distance of 13.5″ at top bracket, followed by an average 10.5″ run means that Tyler doesn’t have to worry too much about mobility. If all else fails, a poorly placed enemy hero could mean that Tyler’s gargant is in their backlines on turn one. The other Warstomper is equipped with the fan-favorite Arcane Tome and Flaming Weapon combo, allowing Tyler to ramp up the damage output of the gargant by setting his feet on fire prior to stomping on the puny enemies.

The other half of the list is a Gatebreaker with the Glowy shield, providing a bit more tankiness to a unit that wants to make sure the enemy’s terrain doesn’t last long. The long trek to the back corner of the board takes a while, but the look on your opponent’s face when their Herdstone gets destroyed is pretty great. King Brodd also makes an appearance, bringing out the biggest priest in town to pray over his giant friends and buff their movement, rend, or health to keep the gargants stomping and smashing as long as possible.

Congrats to Tyler on his win, and I hope there will be plenty of other Gargants players to prove the doubters wrong.

This list isn’t hard to parse – it’s a pin-and-cushion Sylvaneth variant.

Warsong rev is the MW output, hanging back with Spellsinger allowing him to pop his MW bomb spell out of a forward tree – hence the Ancient, for throwing it out there with his once per battle ability pretty much anywhere on the board. Meanwhile, Spinedog pins you down while 6 Kurnoth rain arrows from 30″ into you, and Tree-revs teleport around scoring. That’s it. That’s the tweet list.

Everyone’s favourite animated crypt with more arthritis than a Ulysses convention in 8th we have OBR. One of the oldest books (yes, yes, FEC and Cities we know) with some completely out of place mechanics (Discipline points), they are still very durable and can hit hard. All three of the Mortisan, unusual, but giving heals, reroll 1s to hit and potentially mortal wounds. Other than the guard, everything is reinforced to maximise the impact of the buffs. And a token Immortis Guard for a cheeky bodyguard. The list is built to allow a risky play for an objective with Stubborn as a Rhinox on the General who has Stalkers in the Galletian Command battalion to open the possibility of fight twice (the Stalkers straight after the Soulmason). This is also 16 units on an objective, forcing you to commit something decent to remove them.

What’s interesting is that the list either got max points or lost. I suspect priority may have been partly to blame. With time to get their buffs up, this list would be very nasty. Consistently dropping important pieces becomes a lot more difficult. And the counter punch is terrible. Bone-tithe Shrieker is an excellent example. If they get it off, it’s preventing Rally/Inspiring presence, making any wounds problematic. And it grants +1 to hit, making losses more likely. That on the double reinforced Stalkers with Precision Aspect – 9 attacks on 3s & 3s with -3 Rend and 3 damage each, 30 attacks (Galletian Veterans for additional reach) 2s & 3s with -2 Rend and 2 damage. You really want to get into this unit first. Awesome effort with the army, his loses were to 1st and 4th, making this list very competitive in this field.

Declan: New book 5-0… take a bow Mike Wendel. I mean Mike’s a good player before a new book and this has done nothing but help… but he’s not paid attention to the Internet so only 1 Ironblaster (doesn’t he know that 4 are needed).

This list is actually very similar to some pre book release but with the benefits that they’ve all gained. It’s great to see Ogor Gluttons now being used. They are great models and the reach (2″) means they can now contribute in a fight. Mike has made them and the Mournfang Bounty Hunters as well so not a lot of Galatian Veterans are standing their way.

Add to this the stonehorn and 3×2 Frost Sabres and he’s got another hammer unit and some cats which just have to be killed, although you really want to concentrate on tue big guys.

So, how to beat it… well at this stage don’t get drawn against Mike is a great start, but as with everything target priority, screens and keep your eyes on the battle tactics. You don’t have to kill it all to win! (Although it would help!)

Declan: Well Solomon has definitely paid attention to the Nighthaunt release. Step 1 find the best scroll in the book (Bladegheists) step 2 assemble 60 of then, step 3 charge! What’s truly impressive here is he’s got through 60 of them without wanting to throw the whole army away! A true test of patience.So don’t think you’ll out wait Soloman…. the patience of a bird watcher lies in his soul! (Probably big vicous birds of prey… or seagulls!)

As I’ve said before be careful of the charge and the retreat and charge and the characters… in fact this army is just screaming for you to take the 4 Ironblasters and shoot it off the board. And that’s the limitation of this army. It’ll smash Kragnos off tur board, but struggles against serious shooting. Is that good for the meta? I don’t know but it’s an interesting way to balance them.

Brett: It’s Ben Hur with dragons down to the chariots having priests to whip them into a frenzy before the race. 6 Chariots, how do you even deploy them all, you don’t you can always bring them from the heavens with Scions of the Storm. Anchored by Liberators and the Relictors (for teleports) but the rest of the army moves a minimum of 10″. Tempestors can be played a few ways being mobile but the dual ranged weapons can’t be ignored. They can be translocated and shoot you before tempting you charge as well and they are pretty durable. And that’s the trick here, for a Stormcast Army this is a lot of wounds (128) most of which has a 3+ save and is really durable. Itcan take objectives quickly and tie up multiple units.

There’s nothing that will do a lot of damage in a turn but it takes a lot to kill a chariot (12W) and they can wear down a unit over a couple of turns after their initial impact hits with their 11 attacks. Call for Aid is the Holy Command really giving the list 3 units of Liberators. The HQs are unusual, only the 2 Relictors, the General is built for both offense and defense with Divine Light (reroll hit rolls of one) and Thundershock (subtract 1 from opposing wound rolls from one Unit). Colin dropped only one game (against Tzeetch whose spells would have been very effective) and even beat second. Solik\d, maybe a bit dour but an effective list that is hard to play into. Your best options are to exploit the thin screens and try to tie up the Chariots. Stop the charges if you can.

Patrick: Ossiarch are in a tough spot, completitvely. Anyone who has played them (or against them) knows that the Bonereapers aren’t really playing the same version of AoS that everyone else is, and that isn’t a good thing. Their competitive win rate sits just below the 45% “happy zone.”

That being said, Alan led them to the top 10 at this event, and showed off one of the more straightforward lists, and how it can be effective. Starting off, Petrifex Elite is an excellent subfaction to improve the resiliency of the army, reducing the rend of all incoming attacks by 1. Then you have Arkhan the Black, who can pull double duty by being an effective support wizard and also reviving destroyed models.

And there will be plenty of models destroyed! With 60 Morteks pressed into a Bounty Hunters battalion, these units will crawl across the board, steadily increasing the threat presence on the battlefield. They will benefit strongly from the fact that they are Gallatian Vets, getting to fight in two ranks, and with their small bases you can expect to see at least 10 models from a unit getting to make their attacks.

Countering the army’s slow pace, there are two units of Deathriders led by a Liege-Kavalos to help screen objectives and push some damage back on the opponent. The predator will arrive bound to Arkhan, targeting an enemy hero and giving the opponent one more threat to worry about. The Mortek Crawler also assists in pushing the threat range of the army by providing some much needed ranged damage while the Guard keeps the opponent in place.

No stranger to podiums across Quebec and Ontario, Olivier Gandouet takes first in a scrappy field with his take on the familiar Sylvaneth Heartwood skeleton. Eschewing common pieces like Drycha, a reinforced Seeker unit, or the Celestant-Prime, Olivier instead gets the most out of a reinforced unit of Gossamid Archers – a unit often maligned by Sylvaneth players. 

You’ll find many of the usual suspects in this list –  teleporting Tree-Revenants easily score battle tactics and potentially Show of Dominance, the Warsong provides reliable access to the strong Sylvaneth spell lore and bursts of AOE mortal wounds, and the Kurnoths are an unholy anvil/hammer combo that can be launched through the Wyldwoods crunked out on Spiteswarm sap to send something to the shadow realm and then fade away. A reinforced unit of Gossamids is really the elephant in the room here. While their durability and expected damage is low relative to their cost, they are capable of truly gruesome spikes and can be difficult to interact with for armies lacking in ranged reach. They will always be a risky include just because their strengths and weaknesses are so polarized, but the risk paid off for Olivier in this case.

We’ve seen Sylvaneth lists slowly edge toward lower drops over time, but Olivier reverses course and instead opts for a high drop list with all the bells and whistles. It’s a strategy that paid off in this event – Sylvaneth can still have a productive and relatively risk-free turn 1 if given first thanks to the Warsong + Spellsinger combo and Strike and Fade, but are also naturally resistant to alpha strikes if given second due to how far back they can set up. A unit of Seekers and a Branchwraith auto-casting Verdurous Harmony provides a layer of insurance for any mistakes, effectively negating any incidental chip damage and enabling rapid recovery from failed kill shots.

Season of War’s own Carl Ong really put Flesh Eater Courts on the map of the Canadian tournament scene when he went on a run with his own FEC-Krondspine list. Perhaps seeing no reason to teach an old spine-dog new tricks, Frederic proves the nerfed Krondspine is still very much a thing in deftly piloting his ghoulies to a 3-0 finish.

It’s not flashy, but it doesn’t have to be: the trifecta of the Ghoul King on Terrorgheist, a block of 9 Flayers, and the Krondspine provide the savvy general with the tools to be competitive in most matchups. The Terrorgheist is an infamously explosive rocket-powered scalpel, threatening to tear even the hardest targets down by fishing for mortals with his Gaping Maw. The Krondspine gives the FEC army the durable mid-board unit it desperately wants and a temporary answer for units the Terrorgheist may not want to engage. In tandem, the Gheist and the Krondspine can either remove or tie up the opposing pieces that have the damage (see: Bounty Hunters) to threaten the Flayers, letting them safely leverage their recursion capability and project their force across the table with Run and Charge from Spectral Host. 

This list is here for a good time, not a long time. It will launch a new Archregent-buffed unit across the board each turn until someone runs out of threats. Blisterskin is required here to turn the Flayers into GVs, but is also a strong blanket option with +2 move and access to a teleport for shifty objective play. The Horrorghast is a smart take here, helping to ensure that the list gets the kills it needs on the turn the pilot pulls the trigger and commits. Kudos to Frederic for an excellent finish here.

Legends say that on one fateful night a secret cabal of OBR players got together, prayed to effigies of Nagash, Bill Souza, and Owen Jackson, and received the revelation that big bricks of Necropolis Stalkers in Bounty Hunters can do very bad things to almost anything in the game. Dan Fortin was obviously in attendance at this clandestine ritual and has successfully spread the Stalker gospel in Montreal with convincing wins over Sylvaneth, KragGitz, and the OBR mirror.

What DON’T stalkers do, besides disappoint? They’re relatively fast by OBR standards (mimicking the FLY keyword and re-rolling charges), have access to a vintage 2.0 mechanic in re-rollable saves, and scale hard with powerful buffs from Katakros and the Soulmason to drown juicy targets in a sea of hyper-accurate damage 2 and 3 attacks. Arkhan provides damage diversity with his own personal orbit of arcane bolts, while Katakros acts as a buff vector and a constant threat to the opponent’s precious CP. The Mortek Crawler is a good utility add-on, allowing this otherwise melee-range army to reach out and threaten opposing wizards, monsters, and buff characters with a frightening 5 flat damage projectile. It’s worth noting that the Crawler’s normal profile can benefit from Katakros’ attack buff as well, making the payload extremely deadly in concert with a synergistic Horrorghast to lock in the casualties. 

No silly frills like “screens” here: just twelve very large and VERY angry skeletons ready to receive positive affirmations from Katakros and punch a few one-way tickets to the bone zone. Congrats to Dan and looking forward to seeing the Ossiarchs again!

How cool is it that two Gloomspite Gitz lists finished back-to-back in 7th and 8th? In a true homage to the random nature of the Bad Moon, I rolled a dice to decide which I would cover. It seems Raphael Boyon continues to enjoy the moon’s fickle favour, though there was nothing lucky about his performance – he only dropped a game to Olivier’s winning Sylvaneth list!

A lot of the (justified) criticism of the Gloomspite tome boils down to it feeling like playing a losing game of keyword bingo: the juicy synergies seem to be there, but inevitably end up being just out of reach. Raphael’s Jaws of Mork list may represent the best combo this old 2.0 tome is capable of, solving the unreliable reach of Squig units with access to re-rollable movement, +3 movement, and 3d6 charging. On the offensive side of things, these Squigs can hit surprisingly hard: the Loonboss on Mangler provides a generous +1 to wound buff, while the Sneaky Snufflers are perhaps the cheapest source of the very powerful +1 Attack buff in the game. Kragnos ties the package together, serving as a cataclysmic melee threat and anchor that also allows the buffed Squig units to travel potentially shocking distances.

Interesting that Raphael opted for a 2-drop here, but it certainly makes sense for this configuration of the list. If the opponent makes a deployment mistake or fails to respect his movement, Raphael could potentially pull off an Ironjawz-esque alpha strike that pins the opponent at worst and cripples them at best. Going second, Raphael can sit behind the generous screening provided by the Shootas and then pierce the opponent on their weakest flank, threatening a deadly double with Kragnos. This is the Top Three AoS Lists for Immortal Masquerade that took place in USA on 12th and 13th November. It involved 22 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Danny: OBR feel slightly like the faction that 3e forgot, with their weird version of command points and panoply of 2e style re-rolls. The army can definitely blend though – and recent points drops have given them even more list flexibility. Their main weakness is their red matchups are very red – something a two list format can massively help ameliorate.

Michael has a core of Deathriders in both lists – fast, relatively tanky if not particularly killy battleline that represent the ‘best’ objective grabbers the super slow Bonereapers have. The first list goes with two reinforced bone pone blobs backed up by the ever reliable MSU Mortek with their re-roll saves in Petrifex always making them difficult to shift. Arkhan, the currently favoured OBR utility hero rounds out the tried and tested core. This first list also bungs in a Mortek Crawler – they’re super swingy (pun intended) but do offer one long range piece with spike potential that helps try and deal with those pesky backline support heroes this faction has otherwise no way of interacting with.

List 2, meanwhile, is wild – primarily for the simple fact it contains Nagash!! The bone daddy himself is in need of some modernisation, but he’s still a super potent spellcaster. The main reason you don’t see much of him is his lack of ward save makes him super vulnerable to good ranged threats – something again the two list format allows Michael to make a good guess about the chances of facing such threats before choosing the list.

And WITHOUT good ranged firepower, Nagash can be a MW powerhouse able to keep bringing models back.

A fantastic result for an under-appreciated faction who are nonetheless slowly gathering a cult following. Still a shame Nagash is too unreliable to bring to a solo-list tourney – but in the meantime, great to see him put in a successful appearance!

Declan: Bringing 2 lists to a tournament is a great way to have a little more fun… but normally players either bring 1, or make very small changes… not so Rob with his Big Waaagh lists – they are completely different. I really like the idea of taking a shooting list and a charging list and then choosing which one would be best – and Rob clearly chose well.

The 2nd list is simple and straight forward, but three monsters are a great idea – Kragnos; Big Waaagh; Rogue Idol… all charging 3D6″ and smashing face. Big Waaagh aren’t always best of a turn 1 charge but these three may change all that.

The 1st list is much more techy; with lots of shooting and Gobsrakk. But the genius here is Gordrakk – what a brave play. He’s not seen as the best unit in the Orruk Warclans list, but it’s great to see him having an outing.

Brett: Smaller tournaments are a great place to see some really different lists like this. We don’t see Sequitors or Castigators a lot and here is a list with all of the Sacrosants. The Sacrosant chamber was introduced in 2nd Edition as the casters of the Stormcast, with Sequitors, Castigators, Stormsire and a Stardrake this is a full chamber in action. Thematic. Even though it’s the casting chamber there are only 3 casts in the list but that’s enough for the Everblaze and the Geminids. Everblaze has been popular recently for decent MW at a distance and Geminids are amoung the best of the Malign Sorcery Spells. The Stardrake offers one of the few casting buffs that Stormcast can receive.

Sequitors spell abilities are limited to choosing between exploding 6s or a 5+ ward. Castigators can do the same and either give themselves +1 to hit or increased rend. But they are still using random (D3) shots which is not ideal. Interesting but the damage here is the Stardrake and Yndrasta. This is really more of a durable list, Stormkeep and Celestial Warbringers compliment that approach. But it is a slow moving list which seems to have affected scoring. Both of Paul’s loses (to first and second) were to lists that mixed durable and fast units. Fantastic to see an alternative take on Stormcast.

Declan: Only one list for Matt, but it’s an interesting one – I’m not actually sure how it works. I assume the Pheonix Guard are the anvil (4+ ward save), and the Vigilors provide the hammer with the Fulminators being able to pick off a key unit or clear a screen or two. The battleline are interesting, with some reasonable range, but definitely fishing for 6s.

Matt has taken Dyrcha as well for some much needed punch, but this is definitely not a list you’ll see too often and that’s probably its strength… I wouldn’t really know what to do or what to target first. A strength of ‘off-meta’ lists.

Brett: Almost all of the dragons list with a Krondspine. Mobility and some decent punch, I like how Matt has dangled the MSU Liberators there just so you can kill something easily. That he can summon on to an objective or block a point with Call for Aid (return the Liberators once slain). Gardus for his 5+ ward, most likely near the 4 Stormdrakes, Knight Draconis so the Drakes are battle line. Hallowed Knights giving a 50/50 fight on death. This list can control a lot of the board, a 4 man drake unit can span 20″. The drakes can move 12″ and shoot 12″ making first turn priority important. He can dangle the Krondspine as a target and engage at will. The Knight Draconis is likely to stay close to the big drake unit as well for Thundershock to control the charge phase.

Depending on match up and mission going first might even be an advantage with this list, Blaze of Glory and fight on death is going to punish any successful attacks on the drakes. As the only 5/0 and with really high scores Matt tabled a number of his opponents. And that’s what this list really needs to do, in the early turns remove as many hammers as possible then clean up. The drake’s 9 wounds and profile make them very hard to shift. For opponents, what do you go after? None of his opponents had a lot of shooting or ranged shooting with MWs, the first list with drakes had pairs matching into the 4 drake unit. Hint – that doesn’t work well even with teleports.

Brett: Nice to see Emerald Host back (and not Scarlet Doom) which means a few changes to the unit list. Emerald host slowly withers the opponent. This list plays into that, lots of units which take longer to clear (big hitting units don’t carry over their damage as far). Then Lady Olynder can once per battle brings back D6 models in every unit (they are all summonable). The Beacon also returns 1 model to each summonable unit (all of these). That will let the army stick around longer and score more. Mortalis Terminexus plays really well into this strategy as well (either heal or mortal wounds). There is still the Spirit Torment to help a unit that is being pressured and Krulghast for the damage debuff.

It’s great to see something different from Nighthaunt. Lots of options here with great speed from the Hexwraiths. It’s weakness is probably into something durable that does a lot of damage or the first round list he ran into. It would have removed a minimum of 2 units a turn and the Grimghasts are good, but not likely to kill Fulminators. Lady Olynder is vulnerable to long range shooting as well.

Brett: Arkhan and 3 x 20 blocks of Mortek. Need to say more? They aren’t going to go far but you aren’t going to shift them either. Deathriders and Necropolis Stalkers give a little more manoeuvrable but this is an army that is going to spread out slowly and dare you to charge. And that works (see Ironjawz above). Beasts of Chaos overwhelmed them through a combination of strong rend and bodies (including summoning). The first round draw is more interesting, the Tzeentch list is essentially Horrors and Flamers, hard to kill and a lot of shooting. But they’d have to come into range (charges) and it had less bodies than this list. The ability to control more of the board and force your opponent into an unfavourable match up is the way this list grinds out wins.

Brett: Not a particularly techy list, Ironjawz with a Mawcrusha and Rogue Idol, 2 Warchanters and a mix of 12 gore-gruntas and ardboyz. In true orcish style, it either went off like a frog in a sock or didn’t quite get over the bar. Ironjawz struggle against armies that can bury them or screen them with cheap bodies, the pigs damage isn’t as prodigious as you might like. If you can feed screens to the Mawcrusha and Idol and pepper them with MWs as both of the Chaos lists did here you have a good chance. Still not an easy list to play against, particularly with how quickly the Idol can reach you, priority is key here. With only one Mawcrusha Matt hasn’t had to worry about giving himself another artefact. Interesting way Matt’s mixed tanky (Hulking Brute) and damage (Mean ‘Un) on the Mawcrusha.

This is still a solid Orruk list that can take a tournament (or close to) depending on the day and opponents.

Brett: One of the top ranked players takes a maxi tournament with Ossiarch Bonereapers (OBR), an underrepresented faction. That it’s an unusual list, is a bonus. No Mortek guard but still plenty of casting with Arkhan and the Soulmason. The Arkhan’s casting bonuses will help with the Endless spells, everyone knows Ravenaks by now but the Bone-tithe Shrieker is a bit different. It prevents rally or inspiring presence with 12″ and grants +1 to hit to OBR within 12″. There is a lot on the warscrolls even for the troops, but the short version is that Arkhan can heal D3 wounds or return a model with less than 3 wounds to the Deathriders who, have bonus damage on the charge and can do mortal wounds on a 5+ from a command point.

The Stalkers have a range of bonuses that they they can use, including re-rolling their hits or saves or, +1 to rend/ damage. They have a command to gain re-rolls to runs and charges as well as fly. This list is attempting to deal with the lack of mobility that hampers OBR (Mortek move 4″), and brings a lot of focussed combat power. Stalkers are a really flexible unit, being able to decide whether to be tanky or aggresive each turn. It’s possible to use Arkhan’s command to increase the Soulmason’s spell range to 30″, granting them re-rolls on 1s as well as extra rend and damage in a turn. With 45 attacks at -2 rend, 2 damage, hitting and wounding on 3s. They’re in Expert Conquerors for maximum objective control.

He faced down several Incarnates, a block of 4 Stormdrakes and a Leviadon on his way to number 1, attesting to the effectiveness of the approach in the right hands. Bill scored exceptionally well, the only player with about 200 points and more than 30 in front of 2nd (who he didn’t face).

Brett: Both Mortarchs, the expected 3 Endless Spells, death ward, heals and units that return on death to make a surprisingly hard to kill list. Legion of Blood with Arcane Expertise and a foot Vampire Lord to use the +2 to casting/dispels/unbinds for the first cast. Having one of the Mortarchs cast Cogs to make this a very high probability of Purple Sun on demand. The Mortarchs and Blood Knights make up most of the power in the list, while the Black Knights provide mobile threat, containment and objective grabbers. The Skeletons, Grave Guard and Black Knights could be set up off the board (1 in reserve for every deployed unit) and summoned in any phase via a gravesite. Mostly useful against elite armies that can’t cover all four objectives.

The Blood Knights and Grave Guard are both included in Bounty Hunters, and with 2 Mortarchs this is a 4 drop list. This can place it at the mercy of their opponents in some cases. A lot of control and resilience is possible, but SBGL is a little low in outright damage. Michael won all 5 games but his scoring was average dropping him to 2nd despite his 5/0.

Brett: Another good result for Beasts since their Tome Celestial. The increase in rend is particularly useful when you don’t face Nighthaunt. Roger paid for that by facing SBGL in his first 3 rounds. As for the list itself, a Khorne marked Daemon Prince for anti-charge and because he is a combat monster with always fights first. A Tzaangor Shaman that gives +1 to hit for the Tzaangor within 12″ and a Great Bray Shaman giving +3″ movement to all Gor units within 12″. Although the Tzaangor Enlightened are very mobile (great for Barge Through or even Against the Odds) this list is built around making you come to them (Defend What’s Ours, Grand Strategy). With the Gors to provide screens that leaves the Daemon Prince and Tzaangor to pick their targets.

Roger had a great run, 4/0 until the final round where he met Bill and was defeated. He finished just 3 points behind 2nd. The Tzaangor Enlightened wouldn’t be a great match into the Necropolis Stalkers leaving Roger a little short on dealing with Bill’s list.

Brett: Be’Lakor (the other prince) led Slaves to Darkness list with an almost standard list of heroes. Two of the newest warbands (Chaos Legionaries) as battleline, suggesting a heroic painting effort. These guys were released very recently and, when close to Be’Lakor gain a +1 to their wound rolls. They aren’t really damage powerhouses though, just like the Marauders. But this is where the Chaos Lord on Manticore and Khorne marked Daemon Prince come in with their damage and mobility. The Chaos Sorcerer and Lord, as well as the Warshrine and Varanguard are Tzeentch marked (re-rolling save rolls of 1 within 12″ and a 5+ spell ward) with the remainder of the list as Chaos Undivided for Be’Lakor to work with.

Finally the Mindsteale is on a really cheap mobile monster to be best friends with Horroghast (Mindstealer applies a -2 to bravery). Most of the power is concentrated in the heroes particularly Be’Lakor. At this stage of the edition everyone knows Be’Lakor and he’s always a target for mortal wounds and shooting. Unfortunately most of the list is pretty fragile, they will screen briefly but it wouldn’t be hard to remove most of them in a single turn. After which the combat threats are exposed. Alternatively those heroes are the most mobile elements and can have themselves isolated without screens. Michael played around those issues and took down Seraphon and Fyreslayer lists losing to a clever Cities list with 30 Irondrakes and 10 Protectors. The Protectors would wade through most of this list while shrugging the incoming damage.
