Book 22 in the Richard Bolitho series by Alexander Kent
I love Sharpe-esque novels (including Sharpe, Hornblower, Aubrey & Maturin et al), and I’m always on the lookout for new characters I can follow through similar adventures.
I came across this Alexander Kent book featuring his naval commander – Richard Bolitho. So Hornblower / Aubrey type character. Perhaps unfairly, I am starting with book 22, because it was the one I picked up. But I think these stories should stand alone, and a reader should be encouraged into the series from any of the books.
So onto a Book Review The Darkening Sea by Alexander Kent.
From the Book
Soon after taking part in the dramatic capture of Martinique in the Caribbean, Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho is next despatched to the African coast to gather a flotilla and stop French attacks on British trade routes. But Bolitho must contend with more than Britain’s old enemy. He must also face the hatred of his flag captain and betrayal by a man he once counted on as his friend.
Review
Richard Bolitho is now an Admiral in the Royal Navy and waiting for a ship and orders from the Admiralty. This allows him to spend some time on land with his mistress – Lady Catherine Somervell. (That is mistress in the technical sense of the time, not today). Lady Somervell is widowed and so can’t marry Bolitho, but they are in love.
Eventually he is given a new mission – in the deep Indian Ocean – and he must travel there with a small fleet. A political appointee as his flag lieutenant. A despot as the Captain of his ship. He has to navigate the difficult political issues that arise from him being in command of the fleet. But not his own flagship.
There is the expected climatic battle, but it is difficult to follow the action, as the author tries to include too many ships. It would have been better if there had been a map of this bit of the action.
Will Bolitho survive to return home to Lady Catherine? Or will be die as so many of his predecessors and contemporaries are?
Verdict
Unfortunately, the book had a lot of prior knowledge required and expected and was difficult to get into. The first half of the book seemed to be just ‘fallout’ for the characters on the outcome of Book 21. Which seemed to be a shipwreck and/or a mutiny – I couldn’t really work it out. This meant also that the book spent a lot of time on land. I was hoping for more action at sea.
I may try a second entry in the series in the future. But for now I won’t be binge-reading the rest of the series.

Oh no, Fittsy missed a week! Is everything alright? I’m sure that’s what at least 2 of the readers have thought recently. Work has been a bit busy and I had a 3 day Necromunda Campaign Weekend. Also, I’m because of that I haven’t been hitting the AoS tables as much and although I’ve got a few ideas to throw words at… most of them need a bit more time to swirl around in the old brain until they’re ready.
I did hit up another RTT (Age of Hiltown VII), little shout-out to the crew over there who set up and ran a really lovely tournament with a great bunch of players!
I ended up going 2-1 with the same Nighthaunt list but up against 3 uncommon matchups for me which was good for getting some more practice in against Kroak (I believe there were also some other Seraphon on the table), a mixed Ogors list, and FEC against Luca who I travelled there with. That was the most exciting of the three games where it was pretty close and grindy with plenty of tactical play on both sides and in the end I timed out but with just enough time to score my last battle tactic to pull in a win. Lady Olynder’s Control Score reduction was what pushed the game in my favour… which is making me look at more options to manipulate control score with my lists. I’m really looking forward to trying out the new Nighthaunt terrain and have been playing around with some new lists to lean into that.
It looks a bit hairy here… but things were going to plan
We’ve got just over a week to wait for the new GHB which is always an interesting time to be in… some people are slowing down a bit waiting for the new scenarios and season rules. I bet a lot of you are waiting to see what other surprises we will have in those rules!
I think that’s enough stereotypical waffle from me to start things off. It’s time to start talking about proactive and reactive players. Apologies in advance, this is going to be a wordy one with zero picture from here on out.
What is this proactive/reactive stuff?
This is a way to describe different styles of play… this is something that people with too much time to think about how they play keep themselves busy sometimes when not actually playing. Is it perfect? Fuck no. You may have also heard about the Johhny, Timmy and Spike classifications which stems from MtG and goes a bit deeper into what the player tries to get from their experiences… Plastic Craic has some good coverage about that and list building over here.
Proactive and Reactive at its core
A proactive player focuses on anticipating, initiating, and preparing
Prevention and long-term solutions
A reactive player focuses on responding, following, and adapting
Immediate solutions and problem solving
That sounds a bit wanky and I’m definitely no psychologist so I tried to keep it top level. You’re here for Age of Sigmar coverage (or have accidentally come across this for some other random reason… if so, you should give AoS a try, it’s a lot of fun)… so what do these two types of play look like on the tabletop?
Proactive:
Going in with an overall game plan
List may lean heavily into one archetype
Pushing problems on your opponent for them to deal with (i.e. pinning)
Aggressive play with an aim to create opportunities
Reactive:
List may contain problem solving units or a spread of units to give you play against different types of opponents
Watching opponent’s play and reacting to their moves and focus
Adapting to changes in the game state over the turns
More defensive countering opponent’s play
What type of player am I?
I thought I was reactive… but I’ve since realised that although I may not be someone who plays classic proactive lists (alpha strike, ranged spam), I am definitely proactive leaning and my reactiveness tends to take a back seat to how can I react to force more decisions on my opponent.
Thanks to Darren Watson at Onwards AoS for pointing this out to me!
I represent primarily the aspects of having an army which has a plan on the table top and I am definitely an aggressive player (always be charging) even if I don’t push damage heavy armies around. I prefer consistency in my armies which is why I don’t lean heavily on the magic phase or random attacks characteristics (which might explain my absolutely terrible run with Skaven).
This is me being a good little proactive player pinning those big fellas up the back
How can we use this?
The game starts before the game… so here we can think about our lists. Does the overall list play into our strengths? Am I using units which fit to how I play? When we look at top players and coverage of their lists or interviews… for sure we see different aspects of each of these represented with some all-comer lists performing incredibly well and others which represent clearly thought-out plans carried out.
Take a look at your lists and take a chance to reflect on whether you think the list fits you as a player (not just in the context of this but more generally too). You might find you’ve got a unit which you feel constantly underperforms even though you keep seeing it in top lists… maybe it doesn’t suit your play style.
You might realise like me that you’re a proactive player… do you have a plan for each battleplan or matchup? No, like me, that might leave you feeling bewildered and flustered at the tabletop. Sit down, think things through a bit. I made the decision to choose a plan before turn 1 starts and see it through… Trying to see what would happen and play reactively led to some pretty bad losses for me.
Of course, plans don’t always work and this is my army collapsing regardless of my good forethought
You’ll find of course that you probably lean into one aspect or the other. Something I’ve been looking at in the last weeks is to watch others playing (online or in person) and thinking about how what they do differs to how I play it and tring to think about whether their plays are proactive or reactive. In my own games, I’m then using that to give me a better idea of how they’re going to react to my moves.
I’ll end this section with a bit of a thought… I realise that I although I’m proactive, I certainly maintain certain reactive elements within my armies where I have units which can utilise their movement to start reacting in the later turns (that’s a strangely proactive thought). I’m not going to switch over to a completely reactive playstyle but I certainly do intend to work more problem solving elements into my decisions as I play. Maybe this will work… maybe not but as much as I do like to lean into my strengths, I also recognise I need to think about my weaknesses too.
Rounding things out
Is this crucial to being a better player? No, I don’t think so… but it can help. As with many of these topics of diving deeper into how we think about how we play, similar effects can be achieved organically. You might choose to play your reps, shuffle your list, change how you react and slowly come to more or less the same conclusion as you would by thinking things through in advance. You may just use your gut feel and come to exactly the same point too.
Either which way, I hope this gives you some food for thought… maybe like me you’ve thought of yourself as one or the other but now see things a little differently. Maybe you’ve never thought about it before. Let me know here in the comments or jump on Discord… I’m always keen to hear other viewpoints and then I’ve got the chance to learn more too.
Fingers crossed, this gets you an extra Win where you might have had a loss out there. Get out there and get those Ws!

Luis Mendoza: Cheers on Adrea’s results! His roster is based on Bloodbounds and offers high damage and abilities that improve mobility on the field. The selected battle formation provides greater combat efficiency and lethality for all their units, and provides blood for the Blood God!
Let’s take a look at their heroes, starting with their general, the Mighty Lord of Khorne, who has been granted the Firebrand heroic trait to become a level 1 Priest and gain access to Khorne’s prayers and manifestations. Lord of Khorne abilities offer Strike First and +1″ to charge. Aspiring Deathbringer is the hero that would capitalize on Bring Me Their Skull, and would hit on Strike First, chaining with his Furious Warleader ability a unit of Blood Warriors to hit immediately after, in addition to the +1 to wound for both units. As for support heroes, we have the Bloodsecrator, a must in a list full of Bloodbounds, giving 3 additional dice to Rally and benefiting with +1 to the attack characteristic to a unit once per battle. The support heroine is Realmgore Ritualist who is a level 1 priest getting the benefits of Invoker for the skull altar and supporting defensive play, and her ability to select a terrain feature giving an aura that improves +1 to hit rolls. With 3 drops it is feasible to have access in some cases to 2 Honor Guard buffs, since the list is full of Infantry movement support is valuable, that’s why Field Sargent in Bloodsecrator is a valuable upgrade.
As for non-heroic units, the list has three Wrathmongers, a unit that can act as a defensive shield by returning a Mortal Wound for every 1 rolled on a hit roll from a combat attack that targets them. Also, while in combat, it supports a friendly unit completely within 12″ with +1 to its attack stat, which can be targeted by Skullreapers and Blood Warriors. These two units are perfect hammers due to the amount of damage they are capable of creating: the Reapers with 2 Mortal Wounds for each successful attack, which is also at volume; the Warriors deal damage upon death with their No Respite ability. If we add to all this, the Rend can be upgraded on any target unit using the unlimited prayer of Unholy Flames, the attack becomes lethal. The beauty of this list is that the synergy connects with all the units’ abilities and together they create an impressive damage output. Finally, in this infantry sector, we have two units of Claws of Karanak, an advance unit that has a movement value in the deployment phase, equal to its movement characteristic.
Manifestations support defensive play, as is the case with the Bleeding Icon, which can deny an action that uses CP or hinder enemy spellcasters’ casting rolls by -1 with the Hexgorger Skulls. The Wrath-Axe supports combat damage.
Once again, congrats!

Luis Mendoza: Congrats to Thomas on his 4 – 1. Nicely done!
Let’s review their list. Their roster is based on the Vanguard Wing, allowing them to select a unit with the Vanguard keyword that hasn’t moved and place it back on the field within +9″ of an enemy unit, using a roll of 3+. The drops are low, at 2, providing a chance to decide priority. The list generally offers a lot of shooting and great mobility, with two of the best ranged units for damage and an additional one for melee attack support.
Starting off, their general is Astreia, a level 1 mage with great mobility and can take any SCE unit, with 8 health points and 10″ mobility, as well as providing a pretty decent attack profile, in addition to being able to bring Primal Energy manifestations, which we’ll look at at the end. Leading the second regiment is Lord Relictor, a level 1 priest with the ever-useful +1 to prayer rolls and the ability to accommodate any Warrior or Ruination unit, he’s tasked with providing mobile support – as if it were still required! – and boosting lethality with Bless Weapons, not to mention the opportunity to heal units with Healing Storm. His resilience is increased by having Mirrorshield, preventing them from being targeted by shooting attacks if enemy models are not within 9″ of him; Envoy of the Heavens helps you assign a 5+ ward to a unit if one of them was eliminated the previous turn.
And moving on to non-heroic units, in the first drop we have the sacrosanct elite shooting unit, the Castigators, who are honorably retiring to Legends starting June 1st and thus from official tournament rosters. They offer an excellent volume ranged attack against cavalry units. Combined with Special Assignment, they become a hammer unit even on the opponent’s turn through Covering Fire. The second elite shooting unit is the Longstrike, with the characteristic of adding lethality if it focuses on a hero. Their area of threat is increased by having the Vanguard keyword, which allows you to run and shoot/charge a selected unit in your hero phase once per turn. The regiment is completed with the Vanguards. Palladors with Javelins also have the ability to run and shoot/charge, which greatly increases the chance of being able to charge and unload their shooting profile a second time in the turn as part of their abilities, softening up even some highly resistant units. When combined with Priority Target and Finest Hour, it can increase their effectiveness against specific opponent units.
The second regiment includes support units that cover specific activities, such as the Soulsworn Questors, who have 18 health points with the option of enjoying a 5+ ward on a target in the opponent’s territory and can teleport themselves anywhere on the field within 9″+ of enemy units. Their efficient attack profile benefits from Bless Weapon and Finest Hour, achieving up to 24 attacks. The list is spiced up by the Vigilors, who help you save one CP per turn, replacing the AoA if they manage to hit a unit with their shot, ideal for supporting Questors and Palladors. Liberators give you that extra body for screens, with the ability to deposit mortal wounds on their target.
The list includes the Primal Energy Manifestation package, with the ability to heal units through Emerald Lifeswarm; gain more firepower with Burning Head; and combat damage through Ravenak’s Gnashing Jaws.
The Stormreach Portal supports the board presence and relief the dependence of Translocation, in this way can use ritual points to chant Bless Weapons.
Cheers!

CIVIL WARS, RAT SWARMS, AND UNDEAD VICTORIES — ROUND THREE BREAKS THE MAP
As the Mortal Realms erupt into the third campaign round, one might hope for peace, diplomacy, or even just a quiet patch of unclaimed real estate. Instead, we got Skaven tunnelling through the floor, Stormcast fighting Stormcast, Lu Bu yelling at dragons, and a new fort being founded in a rain-drenched graveyard.
—
LU BU VS. DRAGON: CHAOS HERO YELLS ENTIRE ESSAY WHILE KILLING A BONE MONSTER Soulblight Gravelords (Death) 56 – 18 Slaves to Darkness (Chaos)
The newly named Cairn of Bones was shaken this week by one of the most dramatic duels the campaign has seen. As the Soulblight Gravelords unleashed an undead dragon upon the Slaves to Darkness, the Chaos warriors promptly fell apart, except for Lu Bu, who delivered a monologue so powerful it may have echoed into Ghur.
Charging the dragon alone, Lu Bu battled the beast across four turns of cinematic nonsense, defying death, logic, and several core rules of physics. He eventually slew the creature and screamed his legend into the sky before passing out in dramatic fashion. Meanwhile, his troops were utterly useless.
—
FORT AETHERIN FALLS: LUMINETH CLAIM THE COAST Lumineth Realm-lords (Mercenaries) 46 – 10 Seraphon (Order)
The gleaming fortress of Fort Aetherin has changed hands, as the Lumineth Realm-lords pried it from Order’s grasp with the grace of a surgeon and the subtlety of an exploding sun.
Despite the Seraphon’s celestial foresight, they were completely outmanoeuvred. The Lumineth now hold the fort and have already begun converting it into a mindfulness retreat.
In the gloom of Fort Aetherin’s outer forest, Stormcast fought Stormcast asLord Veritant Achillus led his cursed Mercenary host in search of Emberstone shards to cure their reforging affliction. They were met byKnight Draconis Stigar and his dragons, determined to stop them.
Though Order brought drakefire and thunder, Achillus’ strategy and grim determination saw him hold the field. The Mercenaries solidify their claim over Fort Aetherin.
—
A WHIRLWIND OF WHISKERS: SKAVEN DECIMATE CITIES OF SIGMAR Skaven (Mercenaries) 42 – 18 Cities of Sigmar (Order)
Marshal Growlholt’s Troglodyte Hunt was overwhelmed by a Skaven force under Warlord Vester in an absolutely chaotic rout.
The Skaven surged from tunnels, shadows, and thin air. Commanders were picked off, formations dissolved, and war machines disabled as the horde swept across the field. Only a few defenders lived long enough to regret it.
Warlord Vester has declared victory and started gnawing on the remains of Growlholt’s Hurricanum. The Mercenary hold on Fort Aetherin is now near-total.
—
IRONJAWZ CRUSHED IN THE FOREST OF BONES Stormcast Eternals (Order) 60 – 1 Ironjawz (Destruction)
Lord Ignias of the Dawnforged Host returned to the field with vengeance in his heart and Sigmar’s storm in his eyes. Marching into the Forest of Bones, he met a mob of Ironjawz led by Megaboss Rog and Shaman Bog.
The Stormcast struck like divine retribution. Brutes were eliminated, the Megaboss fell, and the Ironjawz were routed. As the rain fell and silence returned to the haunted trees, the Stormcast raised the walls of a new outpost:
Fort Ignax now stands in the heart of the forest, a testament to honour reclaimed.
—
DA BAD MOON RISES: GLOOMSPITE GITZ GOBBLE BONES AND LAND Gloomspite Gitz (Destruction) 36 – 20 Ossiarch Bonereapers (Death)
In a turn of events that will haunt Death’s war-council for weeks to come, a rampaging horde of Gloomspite Gitz overran the Ossiarch Bonereapers in the murky lowlands between the Swamp of Bones and The Maw.
The Bonereapers, efficient and unyielding as ever, were simply buried beneath bouncing squigs and mushroom-fuelled madness. The region has now been claimed and renamed by the victorious gitz as… Gork’s Chin.
—
STATE OF THE REALMS
—
STRATEGIC SNAPSHOT
Mercenaries control Fort Aetherin with an iron grip (and several rats).
Order has taken the Forest of Bones and built Fort Ignax, renaming the region as Fort Ignax as well.
Death continues to hold the north and crewps onward.
Chaos appears disorganised but still dangerous.
Destruction remains… enthusiastically confused.
Diplomatic Drama of the Week: In an unexpected turn, Warlord Vester of the Skaven has defected from the Mercenaries and pledged himself to the Chaos alliance. When asked for a statement, Vester responded:
“Bigger better army, more war, more snacks, yes-yes! Mercenary contract was too many rules, not enough explosions!“
This has caused widespread confusion with several contractual lawsuits (mostly written in glyphs). The Chaos alliance has yet to formally respond, though Lu Bu was seen nodding solemnly while sharpening his halberd.
RAVAGED COAST WEATHER REPORT
Forecast courtesy of the Collegiate Arcane’s least stable meteorologist
The Forest of Bones – Scattered thunderstorms with a high chance of divine intervention. Fort Ignax experiencing mild drizzle and heavy brooding.
Bay of Bones – Fog levels remain impenetrable. Visibility is now legally a rumour. Undead activity expected to increase toward dusk.
Fort Aetherin – Warp-lightning showers continue, with intermittent ratquakes. Residents advised to avoid all suspicious burrow openings. Again.
The Maw – Unseasonably warm. Blood mist advisory in effect through to Sundawn. Do not lick anything.
Astral Warning: Due to increased celestial interference, stars are no longer reliable for navigation. Please consult a licensed seer, your dreams, or a shouting Skaven for guidance.
