Orders & Omens: Humans and the Memory of Faith

For some months I’ve been working on my own Fantasy rulebook and setting designed ideally for mass battles.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be using this series to explore the development of the setting, factions, mechanics, and themes behind the game. Some articles will dive into rules and battlefield systems. Others will focus entirely on lore, cultures, or narrative concepts.

Previous Articles

Humans are perhaps the most difficult race to make interesting in fantasy. We already know the shape of them. Kings, castles and religion.

At their worst, the Humans often become the default faction. Ordinary people surrounded by exotic races.

While building Orders & Omens, I tried to make Humanity feel distinct. Not more heroic or wiser, just shaped by the world around them.

Humans in Orders & Omens find themselves in the shadow of their past. What would a civilisation terrified of forgetting their past look like?

This gave me the idea of the Faith of Memory.

The Kingdoms of Humanity

Humanity is divided, though old chronicles speak of ancient Kings of Kings who once held sway over all the realms, though the last King of Kings died two hundred years ago.

Humanity exists as a collection of rival Kingdoms, each shaped by their own fears and ambitions.

Hawkmor

Hawkmor is often referred to as the frontier kingdom. Generations of Orc raids and border wars have created a hard people who value martial skill above all else.

Young nobles of Hawkmor proudly undertake Tusker Hunts, riding south in search of Orc warbands, and hoping to return bearing tusks as proof of their bravery.

Heartmere

Heartmere lies towards the centre of the Human lands and is possibly the most prosperous being sheltered from many external dangers. Heartmere thrives through its fertile lands and trade.

Heartmere sees itself as the future of the Humanity and believes that its King, King Sedric VI should be the new King of Kings.

Norrwyn

The northern kingdom is still scarred by the devastation of the Ash Years, and distrust of the Elves runs deep within its borders. Though conflict with the Elves has long ended, memory of their unprovoked fury lingers.

Eastmark

Eastmark is the eastern seafaring kingdom, a land of merchants and explorers. Its rulers once dreamed of distant colonies and lands beyond the sea.

I increasingly found whilst developing Humanity that every kingdom feels shaped by what it fears the most. But above their rivalries, there is one institution almost all Humans trust.

The Faith of Memory

The Faith of Memory stands at the centre of Human civilisation, and at first glance it appears comforting. Its halls are lined with books and scribes quietly preserve knowledge.

Its Chroniclers travel between kingdoms recording everything the humans learn of the world. The Faith exists for one purpose above all others, ensuring Humanity remembers its past. To the Faith, forgetting is dangerous and has caused kingdoms to collapse because wisdom was lost.

History repeats itself because people fail to remember what happened before. This shapes every part of Human society.

The scribes of the Faith endlessly copy books by hand and maintain their libraries obsessively. Histories are preserved, not because they matter now, but because they may matter in the future. What knowledge they have has become sacred.

Scribes and Chroniclers

The Faith maintains vast orders of scribes who spend their lifetimes preserving humanity’s history.

As books age, they are carefully copied by hand. Then copied again. And again. Much of Humanity’s understanding of the world survives because generations of anonymous scribes refused to let knowledge vanish.

Travelling Chroniclers move between kingdoms documenting rulers, wars, disputes and treaties. Some rulers welcome them, while others tolerate them, but few trust them.

“If Humanity forgets itself, what remains?”
– Belen the Chronicler

Redaction

The Faith does not possess inquisitors in the traditional sense, instead they have the Redactors.

Those judged dangerous to Humanity may be erased from memory itself their names struck from records. Portraits burned and books altered. Mentions are quietly removed from official histories.

The intention is not death. Death is remembered. Because to the Faith there is no greater punishment than being forgotten.

Officially, Redaction is rare but necessary. Used only against those who threaten Humanity itself. Yet there are whispers that have spread in recent years after the Faith’s military arm intervened in the city-state of Miamor. The Faith claimed its rulers had strayed too far from Humanity’s path. The city still stands, but many who once governed it no longer appear in records.

Fear and Preservation

Humanity in Orders & Omens is not tolerant, or entirely unreasonable in its fears. After all, Orc raids remain real and the Stone-Kin seem to grow increasingly distant. The Elves are viewed with suspicion, particularly in the northern kingdoms.

Many Humans believe the world grows more dangerous, and perhaps they are right. But fear has a way of strengthening institutions, especially those that promise safety, and in Orders & Omens, especially those promising memory.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most whilst building Humanity has been trying to avoid portraying them as either heroes or villains. But I wanted them to feel understandable, a civilisation frightened of its demise and terrified of repeating old mistakes.

Even if doing so slowly changes what Humanity itself becomes, because in a world obsessed with memory perhaps the most frightening question is:

Who gets to decide what deserves remembering?

Next Week

I’ll possibly explore the unsettling role of the Elves, and why maintaining balance in this world may sometimes demand terrible things.

Fittsy goes to Lübeck again for a 1 day AoS Tournament

So I’ve had a little break from posting here… I have lots of excuses of course but I’ll try and drop a line again in the next week or two with some reflections on the game since the last Battlescroll. Unfortunately, we’ve slid in a direction which is a bit demotivating for a lot of people to play competitively but try not and let that get you down! There are still plenty of good opponents to give you a good game out there!

I did head up to Lübeck earlier this month for a one dayer. It’s been quite a while (end of 3rd) since I made it up there. The Lübeckers are a really nice crowd and this was part of the draw to go join the event for me. On top of that there were plenty of old faces from Kiel and Hamburg as well as a couple of new ones too!

It felt good to get another tournament in… that’s my first one in person since Hamburg Major back in January! I’m trying to get some more in between life, the universe, and everything it can be tough but no reason to let that stop me. I blame the moon. Can’t trust that damn thing!

Location etc

Really nice spot! Well looked after by the hosts with drinks, snacks, and lunch included. Good amount of space around tables, plenty of chairs, very functionally oriented terrain on tables. Weird thing to appreciate but they had a lovely big table where we could all sit around for lunch in the middle of a LARP shop, I thought that was really cool. Here’s a link to the shop if you’re ever in the area: https://pro.apparatus-larp.com/

Tournament meta

Well well well…. Small tournament at 12 players but practically everyone bringing the filth (except lovely old me of course 😉). 2 Sylv, 2 DoK, and DoT… no Lumineth or FEC though. I haven’t had many games into any of those three so was looking forward to getting some practice. You can see all the lists here if you’ve got an account since it was done with Herald. Wacky is that only 2 of the 12 armies were 2 drop and everything else has pushed into the higher drop territory.

My list

After testing a whole series of variations mostly around deciding whether to include the Ironclad or not, I’ve landed on this one which gives me a good combination of close range shooting pressure but enough melee to push things out of obscuring. I do really like the 6+ ward for Vongrim subfaction as it starts to make a quite prickly castle with not many units able to wipe a whole unit of Vongrim hiding in the “Skyvessel Cover”

Game 1 – Cyclic Shifts against Axel’s DoT

Feeling a bit tired after the drive I was hoping to go into an army not requiring too much brain power and… by the end of trying to go through the DoT unit abilities my brain was already a bit frazzled. That’s DoT though. It still feels a bit to me like the opponent is playing and I’m there for the ride against Tzeentch. Not to say that doesn’t make for fun games and I’m starting to see what my options are. In the list, there are really 2 hammers that I don’t want to suffer too much to, the Enlightened and the Tzaangors.

So I need to be moving up to threaten multiple units relatively early whilst still presenting a prickly enough castle to discourage the Tzeentch player from going in and if they do clapping back hard enough to swing things my way. It’s also clear here that reducing the number of units on the board reduces the flexibility of Tzeentch. Also, it’s fun to remove units so that makes it a bit easier mentally through what can otherwise be tough mental games. Here, the first turning point was taking the boatefact (great endrinwork) to give me a 4+ spell ignore bubble which takes away a lot of the damage the wizards can do to me. This really helps to stop the Master and Intercept!

Then I worked my way up the board using the terrain to keep the Tzaangors far enough away. I was very careful that I didn’t want to get both units slamming into my key units on the same turn. Going into my first turn, Axel use transformation into Spawn on me and due to a mix up about how the rule worked on that, it locked a lot of my army in combat (it can only be in combat with the unit it was cast on).

I kept things well back and when I won the prio into turn 2 I gave Axel the turn.

He didn’t spawn me again in my turn so I took my chance with the Enlightened just within reach if I could clear enough of the screens and bounce off them for my charge (use them to enable my Frigate to go in and drop my strike first unit in front). Went for them knowing I’d have to deal with the Tzaangors but thinking that if I could clear enough units that this would be enough.

That’s pretty much how it went down and I managed to knock off about half the Tzaangors in my turn alone. I chased Kairos down and only managed to kill him right at the end with the mortals at end of turn from my Skywardens. Then we pretty much just talked out turn 4 and 5. I can’t catch Tzeentch with all their tricks so this wasn’t a high scoring game but was securely mine.

Result: 67:42 to me and a win for lunch with a pretty good veggie schintzel and chips!

Game 2 – Creeping Corruption against Lukas’ OBR

Lukas is a regular tournament goer in the North and I’ve seen him picking up more wins and becoming a real threat on the Tabletop recently so I was a little nervous when I saw his name. He was bringing his new OBR and this is the first time for me into OBR since the new book so it was going to be interesting to see how it all worked. It was an interesting list with a mix of units between Deathriders, Mortek Guard, Morghasts, Triaxes… and Reapers. I already knew the Reapers were going to be confusing… but I hadn’t realised quite how confusing they would be!

Lukas hadn’t had many games yet with OBR by his own admission so I felt that was going to help balance it a little in my favour. Only problem is the damn terrain! It blocks my ability to use the Transport Skyfarers and Assault Boat with the Frigate. This means I had to make an early decision whether to take a measured approach or to push in hard before the terrain aura would block my setups.

Lukas ended up deploying the Morghast on the line… just within the aura of the terrain so I could have still gone for the alpha but with the Mortek Guard and Triaxes in behind to further increase damage and likely shoot the hell out of me I let him take the first turn.

We really just sort of stared at each other across the board in the first turn. I had decided to take the more measured approach and just sort of admit that the Frigate was going to need to hang back and deal with stray threats in my territory.

“I see you baby, shakin that (boney) ass”

Lukas wasn’t having any of this and pushed his Morghasts right in… chip damage did its work, one went down before they could activate. They honestly whiffed a little… leaving them sitting there looking right at a whole lot of pistols.

It turns out I can take photos from other angles… don’t get used to it though 😛

I moved up to open some potential charges (and gave the Triaxes the lovely covering fire target of an Auto-Endrin) and then took away the Morghasts ward with the grenade. Then I started shooting!

And… 2 more went down quick… and then I fired 4 units including Brokk and failed to do any more wounds into the last one at all! It looked like I was going to have the frigate stuck in combat right at the end but I managed to ping 3 mortal wounds at the end of the turn with the Skywardens in combat with it!

The other units had charged in to wipe most of the Triaxes and just do enough damage to take away the threats to me and it was really cleaning up after that to consolidate the win.

Result: A really fun game with plenty of learning and a 66:46 for me. This was our first game against each other and I hope I pair into Lukas again, it was a really fun game.

Game 3- Linked Leylines against Tobi’s Seraphon

So… last game after two wins but middling scoring meant I was sitting on Table 2 dodging the DoK and Sylvaneth armies both on 2 wins but going straight into Tobi my teammate from Fettes Grot. It’s pretty much a given that our team will pair against each other in the last round somehow. Tobi is rocking his Seraphon at the moment… In the meta, we’re not seeing that much success for Seraphon but Tobi is a strong player and is always a challenge to go up against regardless of that!

It’s got a core of Kroak and the Saurus guard which I know I can’t fight through and is going to hurt me back over the turns I’m stuck in combat with them (but watch me try it anyway). Leylines isn’t a great battleplan for me since I don’t want to stay static across the leylines. It does leave the middle pretty open for me to maneuvre within though which is nice. Although Kroak and his spell could be crippling for me, I’ve got the chance to select the Nullstone boatefact to give me the 4+ spell ignore (although doing d3 mortals back each time is less exciting against Kroak).

This was also the only matchup of the two armies with 2 drops so all I had to do was win the rolloff. Tobi promptly rolled a 2 and I managed a 1… oof!

I could see two options for me in this game… either he would spread out too much and let me pick pieces off or I’d have to try and swing to a double, do enough damage and then try to hold on for points. Only problem is that Tobi’s a really well considered player and he made it definitely look like he wasn’t going to open up his castle to me.

It’s so hard to stay away from the terrain to avoid the mortal wounds from the pyramid!

Seeing his position in obscuring / cover (he definitely did the right thing there)… I positioned myself so that if I won Prio I could give it away… I almost choked and took it anyway but then stuck to the plan to chase that double.

He took away a charge dice for the Frigate with the Hunters of Huanchi so I shot into the two monsters on one flank and put a few things in trying not to tag too much too quickly (after a pretty bum round of shooting, I only just got the darned Skink on Troglodon with my last activation with the Khemist… boy was I worried that the 2 d3 heal per turn was going to heal it all the way back up).

I did win that prio roll into the next turn and I was probably over worried about the one unit of Aggradons and in return the 2 Saurus Guard Units slowly did a massive number on me even across the double. Tobi kept scoring strong though but the double was enough to secure this one for me.

Result: A win for Fettes Grot, 51:48 for me (we called it at the end of round 4 due to time)

Rounding things up

If you’re ever up around Lübeck, you should see if they’ve got a tournament on! They’re a great bunch of people and I had a really good time at the tournament. There’s definitely something to be said for smaller more intimate tournaments… even if there’s a bunch of cutthroats bringing the filth! Congrats to Henne for taking the 1st place with 3 high scoring games. I’m really happy with the 3 wins and second place especially with where KO sit these days. After a pleasant drive back with Janis, I whipped up a classic post tournament traditional Mee Goreng and wound down thinking back over the games during the day. As I finish writing this one up… I’m so keen to get to more tournaments. I’ve got to admit that I’m also keen to see the new GHB and an update to the balance in general. I’ll have a few more TTS games at least before that comes out to keep my dice warm. After that, I’m interested to see what comes and I hope it is a change to the obscuring rules!

Shadow of the Horned Rat: Mercenary Crossbows

As a teenager I played Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omens to excess. I always wanted a tabletop version of the army to play with as well.

Now that I’m in my forties, I can finally realise that dream.

This week we’ve got the first unit you recruit in Shadow of the Horned Rat, the Mercenary Crossbows. Though they change their name in Dark Omens to the Grudgebringer Crossbowmen.

You recruit the Mercenary Crossbows during the Escort to Holst mission. After that I think I used them in every mission of the game. Ranged power was a real benefit in SotHR

To represent them in the game I’ll be running them as Mercenary Sells Sellswords equipped with Crossbows.

The models are 3D prints of Reinhardt’s Crossbowmen.

I tried to keep to the original colour scheme and kept the colours to predominantly red and orange. Doing the freehand banners is a pain in the arse though.

They’ve had a few games, but again, haven’t managed anything of note.

GT Win Rates

I’ve added in a colour code to show the rough age of the rules the faction is using.

As always, these are global stats from various sources around the internet. Daughters are currently dominating, but we do have to note that they have an exceptionally high average Elo suggesting that a lot of top players are using them.

Factions by Average Elo

I’ve included this one to show the rankings of factions by their average Elo. As mentioned in the last section, Daughters have the highest average Elo of all the factions currently which goes a long way to contributing to that 62% win rate.

Estimated Win Rates if the Player Skill Levels were Equal

What I’m trying to do here is work out what the win rates would be if the skill levels of all the players were the same (Yes, I realise this is nearly impossible to calculateBut I’m playing around here).

How it works is by calculating the average Elo of all the players that have had matches since the April battlescroll dropped. This worked out as 422.7. I then calculated how much difference there was between a factions average Elo shown in our original win rate graph to this overall average. The difference between these two figures was then turned into a percentage difference over/under the 422.7 elo. I then increased or decreased their win rate by this percentage (But this isn’t as simple as deducting or adding the percentage different to the win rate – you have to work out for instance what 4% may be of say 53% and then apply that. For Example – 10% of 40% is 4%)

Win Rates by Release Date

This is a new one this week, and will be temporary for now until the new GHB is released.

Essentially this shows the win rates for all the battletomes released within certain periods of time (every 6 months since 4th edition release).

This should show whether Battletomes are generally stronger the later they are released into the edition. As we can see they all fall within the 45-55% win area, though the battletomes released in the last 6 months are a little stronger than the other cohorts.

Battle Formation Win Rates

The above shows the win rates for all Battle Formations that been played in 100 GT games or more.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This week saw Sylvaneth overtake Stormcast Eternals as the most popular competitive faction in AoS currently.

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the Age of Sigmar stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!). Neither to 600-699 rated players. Where we start to see the swell in players possibly chasing the factions with more favourable rules is in players rated less than 600 Elo.

To make it a bit easier to see the effect of higher skilled players, I’ve added the below chart this week which breaks down each factions player base as a percentage.

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

The Fabien Chart

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

% of Players with a Positive GT Result

Ideally you would want 50% of the players having a positive results for a truly balanced game system.

Consecutive Wins

This chart shows firstly the % of players with a negative result from 5 games at GT’s or GT+ in purple for each faction.

Dark blue shows the percentage of players who achieved 5 wins from 5 in the first five rounds of a GT or GT+.

Orange shows the players who achieved four wins from the first four rounds of a GT or GT+ but were unable to achieve the full house and lost their round 5 match.

Green shows the players who achieved three wins from three wins but were unable to win in their fourth round match.

Light blue shows all other players aside from those shown in the first three categories, who were able to achieve a positive result at a GT or GT+ i.e. 3 or more wins.

The above is an aim to show how easy factions are to pilot for players. In this case I’ve narrowed the population down to players with an Elo between 200 and 400. What follows is then the % of those players to win in the first round. This continues, showing what % of players won in round 1 and round 2 in the next column. This continues to show how deep developing players are progressing into tournaments undefeated using that faction.

Bear in mind that although we have no tournament history on record for these players, they may be skilled outside of tournaments before their first recorded instance in the Woehammer database.

Battleplan Win Rates

This one could be useful for TO’s who are looking to run tournaments in the near future. If you’re hoping to curtail a few of the higher powered factions, you could perhaps look to use battleplans where those factions aren’t as dominant.

Orders & Omens: The Stone-Kin

For some months I’ve been working on my own Fantasy rulebook and setting designed ideally for mass battles.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be using this series to explore the development of the setting, factions, mechanics, and themes behind the game. Some articles will dive into rules and battlefield systems. Others will focus entirely on lore, cultures, or narrative concepts.

Previous Articles

Like the Orcs, when building a fantasy setting, the Dwarfs come with just as much baggage. Everyone imagines them with their underground holds, heavy armour, axes, long grudges and an unhealthy interest in gold. And again, like the Orcs of Orders & Omens, some of those ideas still exist.

The Stone-Kin, as they preferred to be called, are mountain dwellers, and are stubborn. Their armies are resilient and difficult to move. The human kingdoms depend heavily on their craftsmanship.

But while thinking about their background, one of the questions I asked myself was:

What would a civilisation built around endurance actually look like?

Not just a people who live a long time, but a people who think in centuries. Because in a setting where preserving memory if first and foremost it felt strange for the Dwarfs to just become short warriors who drink and grumble. I wanted them to feel ancient and steadfast.

It should be a civilisation that survives because it remembers. Not through stories or books, but the very stone their homes are made from.

A small 10mm Dwarf army I’ve been using in tests

The Stone-Kin

The first change was very simple for me. They do not call themselves Dwarfs, but amongst Humans the name remains common. But to themselves they are the Stone-Kin.

I wanted this name to reflect how they would see themselves, not just as inhabitants of mountains, but as people shaped by them.

Stone-Kin settlements are not the underground holds of Tolkien or Warhammer with halls carved beneath the peaks, but instead they stretch across mountainsides and through hidden valleys. Bridges span impossible drops between cliffs, and terrace farms climb the mountainside.

I wanted their settlements to feel less like caves and more like a civilisation that was built around the mountains rather than inside them.

No Kings

One of the earliest decisions I made was that unlike other fantasy Dwarf settings, the Stone-Kin would not have kings. Instead the Stone-Kin govern themselves through the Assembly of Holds.

Early visual experiments for Orders & Omens using 10mm miniatures

Assembly of Holds

Each hold sends an emissary to debate matters of trade, defence, law and diplomacy. No singular ruler commmands them all.

To the Humans this process often appears frustratingly slow as Stone-Kin debates can stretch for months, or even years. But to the Stone-Kin slowness is not weakness, simply caution.

The mountains are not hurried
– Stone-Kin Proverb

The reasoning behind this was fairly simple. If Humans tend towards ambition and Orcs towards speed, I wanted the the Stone-Kin to feel patient and deliberate.

A civilisation more concerned with stability than glory.

The Hall of Laws

At the centre of the Stone-Kin civilisation stands the Hall of Laws. This Hall does not sit within any hold, but exists separately as a neutral ground where decisions are debated and remembered.

The Hall itself is lined with immense stone tablets containing the laws and agreements of the past. Every ruling, every alliance and every promise carved into stone.

“Stone-Kin debates exhaust most Human emissaries. Though whether this slowness is wisdom or stubbornness depends on who is asked.”
– Belen the Chronicler: The Races of the World

But even stone does not last forever, time wears even mountains smooth and some tablets have become so ancient that age has slowly erased portions of them, causing some to lose their meaning.

When this happens the Stone-Kin gather to debate about what their ancestors intended. Only once a new agreement is made are the words carved once more into a fresh tablet.

I found myself drawn to this idea while building the setting. That even memory can erode and history slowly changes, not necessarily because people lie but simply because reasons have been forgotten with time.

Memory Through Stone

One of the central pillars of Orders & Omens lore is how the cultures preserve themselves. The Humans preserve their memory through books, the Orcs through stories and rituals. The Stone-Kin preserve their memory through stone.

They believe what is carved will endure.

Law matters deeply to the Stone-Kin society because laws make up their memories and they provide proof that decisions were made, and mistakes were learned from.

Unlike the Humans whose histories may be rewritten, or the Orcs, whose stories may shift with each retelling, the stone feels permanent.

Even if this permanence may itself prove to be an illusion.

“Stone remembers, but even mountains surrender to time eventually.”
– Vaelorian the Listener

Silent Holds

Even amongst the Stone-Kin though, uncertainty has crept in. Seats at the Hall of Laws sitting empty at gatherings and Human traders who visit the mountains speak of the Silent Holds. Stone-Kin settlements where forges still burn, meals remain on tables untouched and gates stay barred. No bodies, or signs of battle, just silence.

The Stone-Kin rarely speak of these places openly and when they do they change the subject quickly.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about building the setting for Orders & Omens so far has been taking familiar fantasy ideas and trying to take them down slightly different paths.

The Stone-Kin should feel familiar. Stubborn, resilient and masters of stone. But hopefully there is something else to them now. A people who endure because they remember, or at least try to.

Next Week

I’ll likely explore the Humans and the Faith of Memory, or perhaps the unsettling role of the Elves in maintaining the world’s fragile balance.

Shadow of the Horned Rat: Keeler’s Longbows

As a teenager I played Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omens to excess. I always wanted a tabletop version of the army to play with as well.

Now that I’m in my forties, I can finally realise that dream.

This week it’s Keeler’s Longbows. I believe these were mid to late game in the campaign (though I could be wrong).

To represent them in the game I’ll be running him as Empire Archers. Handily these are also the old metal empire archers as well. So a perfect fit.

These will be my second ranged unit in the game and handily have the skirmishes special rule, as well as being able to be upgraded to scouts.

I tried to keep to the original colour scheme and kept the colours to predominantly blue and white.
