As a teenager I played Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omens to excess. I always wanted a tabletop version of the army to play with as well.

Now that I’m in my forties, I can finally realise that dream.

First up are Black’s Avengers.

These guys where the 3rd unit you recruited in the Shadow of the Horned Rat campaign. They were the survivors of a Skaven attack on a town called Wissenheim. They wanted nothing more than to kill Skaven and were armed with little more than pitch forks.

To represent these in the game, I’ll be playing them as Renegade Crowns Free Company Militia, which happens to be the models I used as well.

I tried to keep to the original colour scheme and kept the colours to predominantly Black with White and red accents.

These guys have no armour and as you can see their stats don’t set the world alight. But, what they do have are additional hand weapons and throwing weapons. This will give them two attacks each in combat and allow them to shoot twice as well.

I used 30 of these in two ranks of 15 last weekend. They were charged by Chaos Knights. They managed to kill one on stand and shoot, and then they killed another two over two rounds of combat, before eventually forcing the Knights to flee. More than making their points back.

As a start for my Grudgebringers, I’m more than happy.
