As a teenager I played Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omens to excess. I always wanted a tabletop version of the army to play with as well.
Now that I’m in my forties, I can finally realise that dream.

This week we’ve got the first unit you recruit in Shadow of the Horned Rat, the Mercenary Crossbows. Though they change their name in Dark Omens to the Grudgebringer Crossbowmen.

You recruit the Mercenary Crossbows during the Escort to Holst mission. After that I think I used them in every mission of the game. Ranged power was a real benefit in SotHR
To represent them in the game I’ll be running them as Mercenary Sells Sellswords equipped with Crossbows.
The models are 3D prints of Reinhardt’s Crossbowmen.

I tried to keep to the original colour scheme and kept the colours to predominantly red and orange. Doing the freehand banners is a pain in the arse though.

They’ve had a few games, but again, haven’t managed anything of note.

Really enjoying this series, the painting is great and it brings back memories of playing this game back in the day!
Thanks! Theres a couple more articles to go, and I’m currently painting Ragnar’s Wolves
