Final Tournament Placings

New GHB – Very Hot Takes

So you want a 120-point unit that can deal rend -5 damage to things like Bloodcrushers? Well, you’re in for a treat!

Winners

If you’re a Skaven player, the new GHB seems to have some tasty treats in store for you.

All you’ll need is a reinforced unit of Giant Rats and apply the new Hoarfrost spell to the as you’ll possibly have 24 attacks with -5 rend. Or what about Plague Censer Bearers, with 3 attacks each already hitting and wounding on 3’s, but now with a potential -3 rend and 2 damage?

Orruks are possibly another winner here purely due to the number of Shamans you see in most of their lists. You may find a spare Shaman who could perhaps put Hoarfrost on that screen of Hobgrots so they’re at -3 rend (don’t forget their exploding 6’s to hit)? Or Ardboyz with 3 attacks each, who could now potentially hit on 3’s (with a Sloggoth nearby) and wound on 2’s potentially….

In Soulblight, you always have your Zombies, who could now potentially hit on 2’s with mw’s on 6’s.

Chaff units in general now become a force to be reckoned with…

We may see Khorne players spending a lot of their Blood-Tithe points on improving their Hatred of Sorcery.

Losers

At this point, possibly Fyreslayers and Kharadron. Hopefully, allied wizards will also be able to use the spells, and they won’t count as Enhancements in any way.

Wishes

Extra victory points for killing ANDTORIAN LOCUS wizards could be a nice touch that also brings some balance.

TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000

As Jon and Josh both write for us on occasions and they faced each other in the last round of the competition, we thought it may be fun to have them do the write ups for each others list….

Joshua Bennett: Have you ever looked at a list and said to yourself whelp this is going to suck. That is the general feeling you get when you look across the table and see this list. If you haven’t played this list yet, don’t worry, I’m going to explain why stubbing my pinky toe in the middle of the night is more fun than playing against this.

First let’s talk about Helon. This is the very popular subfaction to take these days that allows a unit of your archers double shots if you’re within 6 of the unit you are shooting. That doesn’t sound too bad, right? Except combined with speed of hysh, his units move double speed if needed to get within six and just start blasting.

This list is very balanced with the perfect screens (roo riders) that, while in combat, can pile away from you and lock you into combat for a while. Not to mention that their shots also double within six ignore wards and to very good chip damage.

Let’s not forget Teclis. This one man army god model just does what he wants. What’s a miscast? Teclis does not know what that means, as he just auto casts four spells on a 10. I don’t know about you readers. I have trouble rolling sixes to cast. He also knows all the spells in the book, which really makes him a very strong support hero.

Cathay, alongside teclis, adds yet another support, giving you the ability to shut down low bravery armies down for turns upon turns with her warscroll spell. She is also who you normally have in the tower to get you the sweet rerolls and plays to cast.

Sentinels do what sentinels do and shoot you from afar, with a little help from the plus one to cast from Teclis the power of hysh spell that allows them to do mortal wounds on fives and sixes cranks up the potential of dps to pick off your units and stay safely away from you.

This list is very good at controlling its opponent and not letting its opponents play with their toys. And in the hands of Jon Anderson well lets just say. Stubbing your pinky toe in the middle of the night is a walk in the park!

Jon Anderson: Here today, I’m reviewing Josh Bennetts’ list that I had the pleasure of playing in the finals at the Smokey Mountain GT this past weekend.

I’m a big fan of this list. It plays similarly to a Namarti Reaver list I played in the latter part of last year. It’s deceptively hard to pilot in that you need to ensure the Seekers are able to distribute their toxin to increase the effectivity of the Archers so your threat assessment needs to be on point. Our match had a giant piece of Wildwood in the middle of the board, so we played a very cagey game. Which I believe favors the Castle.

The turn one depravity generator is the Masque, dropping her just outside of 3 and electing her to be the Euphoric Killer. I’m not usually a fan of taking first turn, but given this list is a one drop, you have almost total control over the turn 1 priority.

Josh would have beaten me, if not for an early misposition with sigvald, so I’m not expecting him to make that mistake twice. Next time we play, it’s gonna be a barn burner.

We’re lucky we have a fairly active discord now (closing in on 1.1k members), and it just so happened that Clay is a member! So, in his own words, here’s how his list works….

Clay Franchere: Gutter Runners and Slynk + Clawpack all deepstrike 9″ and 6″ away, respectively (but wholly within 6″ of any terrain piece) and shoot mortal wounds on 6’s. Slynk and his Clawpack are great GC assassins thanks to a small footprint, fight first, and mortals on 6’s in melee as well

I had a great day 1 going 3-0 with some difficult matchups, but day 2 against Josh’s Slaanesh marked the end with a close but hard fought game. It’s important that Gutter Runners have good target prioritization and I didn’t make the best use of them that game and a priority roll ended up closing out the game with a summoned Keeper of Secrets (hint, don’t give Slaanesh free Depravity)

I also played into my teammates’ Oakenbrow list, which I lost early on due to a fatal deployment error, making me lose Skreech turn 1 with a +5 to charge Durthu. Skaven lists are very fragile overall, so screening and understanding threat ranges on your opponents armies is more crucial than normal as you don’t quite have the ability to tank any wounds caused by mistakes

Overall, I’m a huge fan of this compared to some other lists I’ve run, and I will definitely be playing it again in the future.. but Doomwheels are calling my name

Final Tournament Placings

Leviathan – Tyranids

I have already taken a quick look at the other contents in the box, now it is time to takea look at the models, starting with the Hive Mind’s offering. I will not be putting the full datasheets into this article so if you would like to look at them in full for yourself then here is the Link.

Winged Tyranid Prime

The new variant and apparently a replacement for the original ‘Lieuntenant’ of the swarm, the Tyranid Prime. The datasheets for Tyranids that recently dropped appear to mix the original Prime into the Warriors datasheet so no longer a standalone unit.

One key thing to notice here is yes, this is a character but NO it does not appear to have the Lone Operative keyword. This means the Winged Prime can be targetted unless it is leading a unit, which it can do as it has the Leader keyword.
It is also fairly squishy with only 6 wounds, toughness 5 and a 4+ save (no natural invulnerable save). So if you intend to use one of these I suggest mixing it into a unit. I personally will be trying Gargoyles first to retain the movement. The other options are the two Tyranid Warrior squad types but I feel it’s mobility is the Winged Prime’s biggest advantage.

Damage wise, it is making 6 Attacks at Strength 6 and AP of -1 so nothing too special but at damage 2 and combined with the sustained hits it gains when part of a unit I could see big chunks being taken out of infantry squads. If all non gene-enhanced infantry are still toughness 3 then that’s an average of 8 damage before saves (unfortunately only 4 single wound models though). That is 6 damage against your standard issue marine (toughness 4) so 3 dead marines before those annoying save rolls.

Neurotyrant

Very much a strategic unit who, again, will need to be embedded to stop it being too squishy. Less so than the Winged Prime at toughness 8, 4+ save (with a 4+ invulnerable built-in) and 9 wounds but still not the most survivable.

Damage wise, you are going to be mincing up some squishy brains here. A swingy Psychic Scream doing 2D6 attacks at strength 5 and AP -1 can be good against infantry, especially as it auto-hits. At 2 damage per attack that is an average of 9-10 damage (or 5ish marines) against a toughness 4 opponent before save rolls.
In melee it is almost the same – 6 attacks at strength 5 hitting on 3’s and no AP so less average output than the scream. Basically keep everything at arm’s tentacle’s length and scream like an angry toddler.

I would suggest surrounding it with some chaff like the neurogaunts to take a few bullets until you use it to buff your Shadow in the Warp ability. Battleshock seems to be the big thing this edition so don’t underestimate it.

Von Ryan’s Leapers

The new boy’s in the box (which I wanted to be Lictors) who come with a weird name – I am sure they will be just called leapers by the community at large. I see these as shock troopers, filling the role that genestealers did in the last edition (and doing it slightly better).

With 6 attacks each, hitting on 3s and strength 5 they are enough to scare most infantry squads. Deploying them deep will act as a deterrent to your opponent from committing anything squishy to objectives early on. The fight first ability will especially work in your favour here if you don’t get first turn.
However at toughness 5 with a 4+ save (6+ invulnerable) they are squishy, even with the addition of Stealth giving them -1 to hit so make sure they are well hidden.

Another option is to use them defensively, using their Pouncing Leap (heroic intervention) and high mobility to intervene on behalf of units that aren’t so good at melee.

Psychophage

I do like me a monster, and this one I particularly like. The Psychophage is perfectly designed to get right into the mix. In fact, as it is only toughness 9, 10 wounds and a base save of 3+ (no invulnerable), you will want to get into combat and away from shooting fairly quick (or be good at hide and seek).

The Psychoclastic Torrent is a psychic flamer, doing D6 attacks at strength 6 and AP of -1. Then, getting into close combat, it’s Talons do D6+1 attacks at strength 6. These do hit on a 3+ but if you can reduce your target below starting strength using the torrent before charging this becomes a 2+. It will also gain +1 to wound if the target is below half strength, this may be an incentive to let another unit hit the target first. The damage output will be swingy but combined with Devastating Wounds on melee the Psychophage should be tearing up some squishy infantry with no issues.

You will also want to keep it mixed into your swarms as every friendly unit within 6″ gains a 6+ Feel No Pain courtesy of the Bio-stimulus aura.

Termagants
The steadfast cannon fodder of the hive mind. Some use them purely as a shield or objective holder but I have always liked bringing these in decent numbers and buffing them to become a real pain to my opponent.

I personally take the Fleshborers on my termagants for the additional strength. Being strength 5 means typically a 3+ to wound roll against most infantry types and the addition of the assault keyword allows decent mobility and board presence.
They are only 1 wound and toughness 3 so if you do want to use them as more than a meat shield I suggest pairing them with a Tervigon, for the regular respawn, or the Psycophage, for the 6+ Feel No Pain.

Ripper Swarms
Rippers are getting a brand new model. In the past these have been used for holding your own home objective or dropping in late to steal one. I can see them being used for this still however I can see an additional use as an objective denial. They have an Objective Control characteristic of 0 themselves but they have an ability called Chitinous Horrors which halves this in engaged enemies. My thinking is they can deepstrike and charge in to interfere with a contested objective, denying your opponent victory points in their next command phase.

They are not to be relied upon for damage, as they only hit on a 5+ in both melee and shooting, so they are probably just going to be used for objective control or denial.

Neurogaunts

Another unit similar to Ripper Swarms in that they have a specific purpose but will likely not do any damage to your opponent. I would likely use these as shields for characters, like the Neurotyrant, or as a synapse extender. They could even do both with some clever positioning, just remember to comply with unit coherency.

With no shooting available these guys rely on their single melee attack hitting on a 4+ at strength 3. In large numbers they could do some damage to infantry but they will only be a meat shield for your character against tougher opponents.

Barbgaunts

As an anti-infantry artillery unit the Barbgaunts can play a key role in maintaining board control. The Bio-cannon is fairly decent against typical infantry but will be swingy as it is D6 shots. Though with hitting on a 4+ and strength 5 any hits that are made should be effective. My suggestion (depending on points value) is to go for 10 of these, or two squads of 5, to maximise shots.

However the best value from these is their Disruption Bombardment ability – giving a reduction of 2″ to movement values, charge rolls and advance rolls. This only takes a single hit to an infantry unit and especially frustrating to your opponent if combined with the Fire Overwatch stratagem to stop that deep striking unit amking a clutch charge.

Screamer-Killer

I love this model and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. As for it’s use on the battlefield this unit will be very good against infantry, with it’s high number of attacks, whilst also being strong enough for the more elite models.

The Bio-plasmic Scream is only strength 8, so less useful against Dreadnaughts (Toughness 10), and slightly swingy with it’s D6+3 attacks but with AP-2 you should do some damage. However the nice thing about this weapon is that a single hit will force a battleshock test. Failing this will cause your opponent to lose buffs and that key Objective Control characteristic, allowing you to steal a contested objective.

Melee will be the most deadly use for the Screamer-Killer. Having 10 attacks, hitting on 3s at strength 10. Add in an AP of -2 you are only looking at a probable 5 damage to something like the Ballistus Dreadnaught. However put him against a squad of Terminators and you are looking at an average of 3 dead in a single round.

That would be my way to use it, send it after the objectives secured by elite or normal infantry and either clear it out or take it by battleshock.

So, in summary, there are a lot of beautiful xenomorphs in this box and each of them with a viable role. I hope this is indicative of the new edition, with more viable competitive list options to give some variety in the opponents you face. But we shall see.

Kevin Lathers: A greyfyrd list which somewhat mimics the Vostarg lists we’ve seen before. It’s got two flamekeepers, a Runefather leading some Hearthguard Berserkers (HGB), and everyone’s favorite Nulsidian Icon carrying Battlesmith.

But this list spices it up a bit by adding a couple extra GC’s: a Grimwrath Berserker with Ale and a Doomseeker with the GHB Nightflyer Cloak. It also knocks out a unit of Vulkites to pump the HGB up from one unit of 15 to 2 units of 10.

Still, this list will play in a similar manner to the previous iterations we’ve seen: become hard to move off objectives while swinging back like a ton of bricks by using flamekeepers to pump berserkers.

The one wrinkle this list throws at opponents is the Grimwrath. With the Runefather, Ale, Rend Rune, Heroic Action, and/or Smiter prayer, a Grimwrath can have 9 attacks hitting on 2’s and 2’s with -3 or -4 rend and 2 damage each swing. It then fights again or fights on death. That’s extremely POTENT, meaning this list now has an absolute missile that can run and charge into a key enemy piece and absolutely wreck it. The Doomseeker will act a much smaller, weaker, missile that will have one single target instead of taking a more opportunistic approach, but still makes opponents have to tiptoe around these GC’s.

TOTAL POINTS: (1995/2000)

This list reads like a top 10 of the beast (see what I did there?) BoC units. A thin screen of Ungors for whatever you need them for and Bullgors to push up the centre. They have quite the glow up with the recent book, good to see them on tables in big numbers. Tzaangor Enlightened without discs for solid output if a bit slow. Hard to think of Ungor Raides as “Sharpshooters,” but with the Darkwalkers’ ability to slink off a board edge and back on, they are significant, mobile threat.

The Doombull and Bullgors offer excellent control, be that the centre or an edge objective with the Raiders providing some ranged backup and movement potential. The Doombull is rigged for durability and trouble, allowing a reserve unit to set up within 7″ (Bestial Cunning), applying a strike last to a unit after charging (Slitherwrack) and a once per game heal. The spells on the Shaman either straight mortal wounds (Viletide) or apply fights last (Stranglevine). Good choices with the limited spell casting buffs available and once a game summoning a unit helps to (Brayblast). Most to the time the Tzaangor Enlightened will start in Ambush with the Bullgor weathering the storm in the first round.

I’m assuming the Herdstone was included in the list (but not shown). With it’s rend increase from Round 2 and again in Round 4, it’s an autotake that means you need to preserve units until they are at their most effective. Handled well, they are a strong army, as seen here, taking most of the top armies on and winning until undone by Nurgle Chaos Knights (Slaves to Darkness). They are hard to kill and mobile enough to create a lot of issues, especially for an army limited to teleports and 6″ moves.

Final Tournament Placings

Top Three AoS Lists for Ironweld

This is the top three AoS lists for Ironweld that took place in the USA on the 27th and 28th of May. It involved 57 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

Short Announcement

As a group, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to find the time to write commentary on the tournaments as they crop up. You may have seen this through a few days where there isn’t an article posted at all.

To combat this, the decision has been made to publish the top three without comments. Where possible, writers will then revisit in the future to add comments if they feel its necessary.

I’m sorry that this is the route we’ve had to take. The only other option in the shirt term would have been to stop producing top 3 articles, but we really didn’t want to do that.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

If you like what we’re doing, why not join our Patreon and help keep it going?

Another win for Slaanesh, leaning heavily on the depravity generation of Blissbarb but with a lot of different parts from the Heroes to the units themselves. Pretenders again with Glutton for Depravity as the Grand Strategy. That means that if you can control the depravity generation, they won’t summon – but the list is designed to push hard and generate a lot of DP quickly. Starting with the heroes, the Contorted Epitome is built as a GC slayer, turning off your melee and increasing its damage. Nothing too unusual. The Shardspeaker is generating extra DP but is also built to take an objective and battle tactic if the opportunity is there. The Masque is unique and has a very aggressive ploy if you are willing to gamble on going first. With 12 drops, I think Anthony was planning to be given first turn most times.

Both kinds of Seekers for objective control, harassing units, and if pushed screens. The Painbringer are the obvious Euphoric Killers targets. After that, though, the list departs from the normal. The Cockatrice lost the Monster keyword but is still a very mobile annoying piece to deal with. Damage 2 attacks and 8 wounds make it a problem to kill even without Rend. The Furies have a similar role, or you could think of them like Heartrenders. Very quick units for Battle Tactics, screens, and generally annoying. The draw did Anthony no favours, but the varied list had a lot of answers. It may look unusual, but everything has a roll in the list.

Ghost cavalry attacks. Following the latest releases and battlescroll, Nighthaunt has fallen back into the pack. It’s no surprise that Nate is back with an unusual list. It plays into the current meta well with significant shooting (short range but ignores cover and lines of sight) and small mobile unit. It’s a complete 180 from the Bladegheist or Harridan lists. This list is outscoring you more than destroying you. Still, Reikenor or the Knight of Shrouds are capable in combat. And can take advantage of Lauchon (combat spell casters).

Bouncing off Stormcast, their natural enemy, the army dominated most of the current threats, including Gravelords and Khorne. I don’t think it’s a list that just anyone can use, but it’s an interesting option. With Emerald’s Host constant mortal wounds and their frequent small attacks, it can wear down or bog down key units. Mobility is key, or if you are the opponent, trying to stop the Hexwraith scattering. Concentrating on the Craventhrone may be a bit of a trap even with their shooting. With only a 12″ range, you can play around them

Lots of head winds for Slaanesh since their book dropped with SBGL, KO, OBR and Khorne all vying for attention. We’ve seen a lot of Slaanesh armies podium but not always take first. Here we have first, with with an absolutely gorgeous army of mortals making this very accessible. We don’t often talk about this but apart from the Leaders and twinsouls you can build the rest of the army from the Vanguard kit.

So many sacrifices, I mean mortals, this list is designed to generate as many DP as quickly as possible while spreading you out. Whether its from Temptation (Archers), Euphoric Killers (Twinsouls) or Born of Damnation (Epitome) this list is going to generate a lot early. But the Grand Strategy is Selfish Desire, summon no daemons during the battle, no instead this army is taking advantage of Revel in Depravity. They are gambling you can’t kill them fast enough to avoid them gaining enough DP for the whole army to be at -1 to hit, Mortal wounds (MW) on 6s and a 5+ ward. At that point all of these frail mortal units become very tanky.

The list makes a lot of sense when you look at it like that, the Seekers can take objectives early with their movement and if targetted grant DP. The Blissbarbs stay back and pepper you forcing Temptaions with the Twin Souls as a screen. At the centre there is Gluttos who buffs the army and makes it hard to charge but can allow units to fall out of combat before they are struck back (in their and your combat phases) with Phantasmagoria. Then there is the Epitome to hunt any GCs or be a GC, Dark Crown lets him reduce attacks to 1 for something at the start of the game. That’s on top of extra rend and damage from Strength of Godhood.

This isn’t some fancy list tech, the army had to be handled and moved very carefully, until they generate enough DP it’s very fragile, except Gluttos and the Epitome. They are also a bit of an emergency button, if that’s all you have left you are still going to be able to push out a lot of damage and still score Battle Tactics. In the end this combination did very well beating out eveything except Sylvaneth treelords. There may be justice here, First beat second head to head and lost to third while second lost to first and beat third.

Oh hey look it’s not Legion of Blood!

Turns out Vyrkos is pretty damn rad as well huh? The fluffier sub-faction of the book (although…troubling, this list has no wolves…) is the home of choice for chaff, given it can utilise a heroic action to bring models back over a deadwalker’s starting strength and also, once per game, just summon a pack of 10 direwolves.

The zombie and Deathrattle wall is backed here by the usual synergy-foot heroes, Graveguard blob, plus Radukar as a fantastically annoying (with his -1 to hit and wound) harassment piece who can also act as a nice trigger for the ‘hero then another unit fights’ Vyrkos ability.

Paired with two units of Blood Knights as fast movers who are part anvil, part hammer and packed neatly into a 2 drop double bat-reg, this is a much more flexible take on Soulblight that excels at board control and has mad levels of chaff recursion.

Of course – it lost to Slaanesh, which is the problem in this meta – this many bodies is just an irresistible depravity party for the purple pervs – an unfortunate scissors/rock scenario perhaps which is, of course, why Legion of Blood is the premier tournament choice at the moment. A shame that the one match up is probably keeping the other Soulblight factions from succeeding at a tourney level. Kudos to Aaron either way!

Leviathan – Our thoughts on the box

So everyone and their dog has heard about the Leviathan box over the past few months. It is a massive box, GW claim (once again) that it is the “Biggest Warhammer release in history!”

Looking at the pictures, there is no denying the amount contained, so let’s take a look at what you get.

I will dive into the miniatures in two more articles, one for marines and one for tyranids, but let’s take a look at everything else first.

Exclusive Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan Rulebook
This is typical and essential for a new edition launch box. There’s no point in having the box if you don’t get the new rules for the game. I had the 9th edition launch box, and the rulebooks contained are always of nice quality, chunky enough to rob a bank*, and the imagery makes it suitable for display. I have to say, though, the image of a terminators helmet with the Leviathan logos is not quite as nice as the logo free Guilliman/Abaddon duel image on the 9th book. But that’s just me!

Chapter Approved Leviathan Mission Deck
Now, this is what I am most interested in, having exclusively played Tempest of War since it’s release in 9th. I don’t think I have seen the community as united as they were over the positive reception of this format. It looks like GW has listened to the feedback and decided to make the mission generator the main way to play the game.
If you have played Tempest, then this looks to be exactly the same, apart from the addition of Gambits. Everything can be generated at the start of the game, and you can either have fixed secondary missions or tactical secondary missions (greater reward but constant change). The interesting thing here is that both sides can choose either type of secondary. They don’t have to be the same.
They have stated that tournaments may generate these missions ahead of time, but that will come down to the organiser. It does make sense for competitive play, but I will be interested to see how list building changes for tournaments that are randomised for every game.

I also love the addition of the Gambit mechanic. I need to play to really get a feel for it but the idea of being able to scrap your primary and try for a hail mary when you don’t think you can win feeds my love of cinematic moments in games. It is also very 40k that the example they give is basically turning everything to ash.
The idea is that at the end of the third battle round, you may play a secretly chosen gambit card from your Gambit deck. It isn’t made clear whether this is chosen at the start or at this point. Whilst the gambits can give you a large boost in points, it does look like meeting the terms of the card won’t guarantee you the points. The example below relies on a dice roll to complete it, and even meeting all the terms only gives you a 42% chance of succeeding.

Space Marines Transfer Sheet
Well, the box does contain Space Marines, so it would be silly not to include one. Although, at this point, I think even if the box didn’t contain Marines** it would still have one of these in just to make sure you remember they exist.

What are your thoughts on the box? Are you excited for the new mission systems as well? Let us know on our discord!

*Please don’t try to rob a bank with it. You will be laughed at.
** Blasphemy!

Where to Buy
GW has announced it will be available for a two-week preorder from Saturday, 10th June, I have included GWs times below. I always advocate supporting your local independent stockists, following the idea of Pay where you play, but if you are looking for somewhere, and would like to support Woehammer, we do have a couple of affiliate links:

Top Three AoS Lists for the Birmingham AoS GT

This is the top three AoS lists for the Birmingham AoS GT that took place in the UK on the 27th and 28th of May. It involved 12 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

As this event had less than 20 players attending there won’t be any list comments here as the guys will be concentrating on the larger events of the week.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

If you like what we’re doing, why not join our Patreon and help keep it going?

Also if there’s a one day or two day tournament you’d like us to cover drop us a comment on this post and we’ll have a look at it for you.
