Joshua Bennett: Good evening, first off I want to congratulate you on your 5-0. You took a slightly different approach with your list than what we are use to seeing. The first big thing is that you went with God Seekers, what was the idea behind that.?

Jeremy Lefebvre: God seekers has enchants I can take at every level that are useful. Command trait that I can use a counter punch. 2 really good artifacts, the gridle for a pile in flying keeper. ( which makes them both aggressive and defense) and the voice box, which can be used to counter a melee heavy army on their big charge then the Extra movement is nice, to get things in a little better spot if needed. The charge reroll reduces the chance of getting screwed on bad charge rolls. one of the games, I failed 4 charges on the first roll ( a 3, 2, 4 and another 3) all of the reroll charges were successful

Josh: There is a lot of debate to whether the Keeper of Secrets is worth her points obviously you feel she is. What is her role in your list?

Jeremy: She didn’t go on a killing rampage, in most of the game she killed very little. but was fat enough to get in the way and grind stuff down. The double fight was very good in the list. It helps give an extra punch to get more DP. I used it with Siggy most of the time, but not all. As it lets him fight first, then fight again right after that (strike first, cancelling out the strike last) the keeper never died, which has to say something. She has served as anvil and pin piece, she often goes to hunt little foot heroes to stomp on.

Joshua: 5-0 aside that is very impressive.

Jeremy: Thanks, it is a fun list, and can be hard to pilot. a lot of the game is in the deployment and how to move it. It’s built to have counters to most types of armies, dunno if you saw when I broke that down in the Team America chat.

Josh: I love the fact that you did not mass include the archers in this list, its great to see other things being used.

Jeremy: Thanks, I feel you want some shooting, the archers are squishy, so requires a different game plan, that is not board control. I don’t find mass archers not fun to play, or play against. Mass archers list have hard counters, and I try to build my list so there is no hard counter, and I can hang in any game

Josh: I love it thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me about this amazing list and good luck with it of your next adventure!

Jeremy: It was a pleasure, looking forward to reading your write up on the list and event.

Roland Rivera: Here we have an interesting variant of the typical Legion of Blood Soulblight list. It has the usual power-pinning elements to hold the line in Neferata and a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon, both of which can present a 3+ ethereal save, followed by a Ward.

These are surrounded by lots of fast-moving Black Knights, which are fast bodies you can use to occupy space and capture objectives, but are also pretty potent on the charge. This charge potency is amplified by a Wight King on Skeletal Steed, which emits a bubble of rerolling charges and makes their impact hits better. The 10-man units operate more as a hammer and likely stick close to the Wight King, whereas the 5-man units are more expendable.

Last but not least, a Tunnel Master Vampire Lord can achieve some cheeky Battle Tactics by teleporting onto an objective, and is a source of chip damage by casting Spirit Gale. Overall, this is a fast-moving, hard-hitting list that has some staying power thanks to its tough Hero Monsters, and it’s easy to see why it did well, only drawing against the virtual mirror match.

Aaron Newbom: My Idoneth list is designed to be a mobile castle. Combining the turtles +1 to save aura, the Phoenix’s -1 to wound aura, and the kings -1 to hit aura creates a massive debuff zone if you manage to make contact with me. But unlike traditional castles, I am also incredibly mobile.

Leveraging the full force of your army to crack my walls and storm the keep becomes an impossibility (except on realmstone cache 👀) and my ability to explode outwards for heavy burst damage punishes any attempt to do so that fails.

The sharks and fleetmaster exist to allow me to make small plays without breaking up the castle and the score early points.

The Phoenix is amazing in this list because unlike normal armies, your opponent MUST shoot it. And no one wants to shoot the low damage 3+/4+ save unit, resulting in almost no chip damage ever coming through.

Joshua Bennett: Greetings readers, have you ever seen the movie 300? If you have, you know the famous scene where the Persian tells Leonidas that their arrows will block out the sun. Well, if you play against this list, you will fully understand what that statement means.

With 88 blissbarb archers, it sends a total of 160 shots your way. Teamed up with pretenders, it allows three of those units to auto run 6 inches, and since the warscroll allows you to run and shoot, you are looking at a 30-inch threat range for them. Also, they are allowed to all out attack three of those units. So 120 of those shots hitting on 2s and wounding on 3. Which makes them a very reliable source of damage. At rend 1 people almost shrug them off but teamed up with the blissbarb seekers they become rend two and pick up most of anything that they are shooting at.

Oh Be’lakor, this guy does great in mitigating some of the bad matchups by shutting down the units that cause problems. Also, him being a 4 plus save, he can help tank some of the high rend units that might put unwanted pressure on the list. Lord of pain is used to ensure that last unit of blissbarbs and also hitting on twos or negating any negatives to hit and wound. The common trait strength of Godhood also allows him to handle his own in combat. The Crown of Dark Secrets takes an enemy hammer unit and cripples its ability to deal damage by reducing the number of attacks to one. I need to say that again, not reduced by one, reduced to one.

If you think I have to hit this list super hard super fast, I would urge you to really think about how you’re going to do this. Charging into this list is very dangerous due to the fact that pretenders can unleash hell three times. That’s a potential 120 shots into a hammer or 40 shots three times over to three different units. Makes charging this list a little tricky.

Look, this is an amazing list and very similar to the list I personally run. But if you are looking to play something like this, be prepared to have no friends. (i’m just kidding) If you’re playing against this list and it’s bright in the area you are playing, fear not for soon the arrows will black out the sky.

Roland Rivera: Thomas Oliver’s list is a spicy one indeed. While it includes the common elements to most successful Nurgle lists in Bloab and Orghotts as quality Hero Monsters, the Lord of Afflictions as a hard-to-kill disruption piece, and Pusgoyle Blightlords as durable fast-moving frontliners, it is complementing them with some interesting choices in a Sloppity Bilepiper, some Plaguebearers, a reinforced unit of Rotmire Creed, and some Corvus Cabal.

The combination of Sloppity and Plaguebearers is intended to hold opponents in place by engaging enemy units (or forcing them to engage you) in situations where they will find it difficult to bring their full force to bear against the Plaguebearer unit, then using the Sloppity’s ability to disable pile-ins to prevent repositioning. This combination is often seen in Daemon-centric lists, but Mortal-centric lists rarely reach for it, making its inclusion here very interesting.

Units of Rotmire Creed in Blessed Sons Nurgle lists are quite common, but they are usually minimum-sized units whose purpose is to fulfill Battleline requirements cheaply while providing you with shooty screens for your Hero Monsters. This reinforced unit is likely intended to be a dedicated objective sitter that can soften opposing units up with its shooting and potentially put an Unleash Hell or two out there.

Lastly, the Corvus seem to be here in order to provide the same deepstriking nuisance function Nurglings typically serve at enough of a points discount to not make the list go over. Overall, a very interesting list with a solid result to back up its viability.

Fabian Quinn: List theory and design – The list was actually played the weekend before by Tom Mawdsley at the Justice Series GT at Just Play Games. When I saw some of Toms games on Twitter and saw how much fun he was having I immediately wanted to play the list. I have played KO before in a few tournaments so had a general grasp on the army but not with the new book.

The list and interactions – This type of list really wants to be one drop to decide who is going first due to how fragile the list can be and how close some of the deployments are. Zilfin allows the Frigate to become battleline helping to have two behemoths in a one drop list.

Heroes
Arkanaut Admiral – An absolute all star giving out +1 rend to a non Skyvessel, a free command ability to his flagship and the Thunderers every turn.
Aether Khemist – Handing out +1 to rend to a Skyfarer unit every turn helps getting through armour, especially if used injunction with the Admirals Grudgebreaker rounds (+1 rend) units in the army can get up to 4 rend!
Brokk Grungsson – He’s sooooooo much fun and adds a little combat punch to the list to help finish off units that may have been left after some bad rolls.

Units
Frigate + Endrinriggers -15 wounds on a 3+ save with the healing of the riggers is amazing, especially with the +2” to move (from the second free Endrinwork, thanks Zilfin!) meaning placing Brokk in here adds a close combat threat that has not been seen in KO before. When your opponent hears the words I’m declaring a charge they often have to do a double take!

Thunderers – These guys are amazing to kick out of a boat and point at your opponents biggest baddest unit especially with +2 rend!

Ironclad – Still good to help protect and transport the Thunderers plus heroes. The Ironclad in this list is also a great defensive piece to disrupt your opponents charges with the great Endrinwork ”The Last Word” and Supremacy mine!

Overall the list was very fun to use and it really does reward great deployment and positional play. I would definitely say its a double edged sword where poor rolls, deployment and placement can lead to losing very easily.

TOTAL: 1990/2000

Brett: Hero hammer combined with some Vexillor madness for ranged Mortal Wounds. That doesn’t show how carefully this list has been crafted – Astral Templars has become the choice of Stormhost with the new books bringing monsters back on to the table. Vindictors for home plate and Vanguard Hunters to get out there and take exposed objectives. This is a Stormkeep so there is not air assault element, that inbuilt teleport is especially useful. You can back up the Tunnel Master easily. With ranged and melee attacks their output isn’t great but they have access to Unleash Hell and can prevent a Vexillor being sniped. The 4 Vexillors are all handy 6 wound Galletion Champions opening the new battle tactics to this list.

Hammers though, this list has them – Karazai is effective but needs protection and has it with the Praetors. 6 is unusual but will take a lot of punishment and can dish it out as well (19 attacks hitting on 3s). The biggest issue is keeping up with Karazai. And from Turn 2 or 3 the Prime is going to enter, auto charge and delete something. Stormcast are normally pretty worn down by Turn 3 normally so this is a really powerful way to preserve some offensive force. A very strong showing with a faction that isn’t seen as that competitive, drawing with Gitz is a very solid result. It says a lot that such a small army could hold Gitz back in their current state and with the pre data slate rally. Karazai is great anti-horde.

Phil Marshall: Slaanesh Pretenders – How did it work?

I decided to run a fairly balanced list that could perform a role in each phase of the game. Pretenders sub faction jumped out to me off the bat as a faction that was very strong due to the command point mechanics that I took advantage of. In Pretenders you receive 3 command points instead of 1 if your general is alive. This combined with the strength of godhood command trait is a super strong combo as one part of this allows you to issue the same command 3 times in a phase for the use of 1 command point which is a super strong mechanic which is what the list was built around. The other aspect of the command trait is that it gives the general plus 1 rend and plus 1 damage when it issues a command till end of the turn, which can make my general slightly obnoxious at potentially rend 4 and 7 damage. The artefact that I feel will be the most common is the crown of dark secrets due to the ability to potentially shut down the best hammer in your opponenets army. You pick a unit at the start of the game and if they are within 6” of your general they count as only having 1 attack. Helps when your general is a keeper of secrets, so maximising the rang of this.

How did the list play then? I myself am quite an aggressive player and I chose to play this list as an aggressive castle, pushing down the board. The Masque works really well for this with the mechanic to set up in your opponents territory 3” away from units to pressure people who out drop you taking the turn to mitigate them taking the early double against you before you have enough depravity to make your units more survivable. The other way of using it is to capitalise on deployment errors and taking off key pieces of having a good target to start the depravity train as you are wanting to get to the 36 depravity as quickly as possible to give the army the 5+ ward. In all my games the masque was my turn 1 depravity generator, popping finest hour, avoiding monsters means that it was consistently 9 attacks 2s&2s rend 1 (or 2) damage 2. Then the rest of the army was making the most of impassable terrain and setting up a tight screen of the blissbarbs and utilising the generals ability to auto 6 run all 3 units to get the maximum range out of the, all out attacking all three in the shooting phase to be 2s & 3s and in some instance triple unleash hell! The Blissbarb seekers really compliment the Blissbarb archers and are looking to do some chip damage to the main shooting targets and the unit that you are looking to gain depravity from the Euphoric Killers trait in the combat phase. Blissbarbs split firing is also great at handing out temptation dice to also try and gain more depravity or do additional damage if they decline. Its looking to pressure the table turn 1 and assert an aggressive position on the board. The Blissbarbs with the 63 shots have most likely cleared the screens in the 1st turn and the army is well positioned to unpack with a double going into turn 2. With the Speed of the Keeper and the Slickblades you are in a great position to get where you need to be and take off key pieces in the corresponding turns. The list has two great targets for the Keeper with the once per game double fight in either the Slickblades or Sigvald (depending how big his charge is). With the Epitome’s warscroll spell giving plus 1 to wound against D3 units and the ability to shut off command abilities within 3 its looking to follow those combat pieces as it essentially makes the Slickblades potentially rend 4 with the Blissbarb Seekers and the ability to shut off of all out defence. The Slickblades then become 31 (or 41) attacks 2s 2s either rend 2/3/4 depending on what you have been able to accomplish in the turn so far. With the 2” reach and potential fight twice you could have already generated the 24+ depravity so that on the second swing you are doing MWs on 6s to hit as well. There is some serious damage that can come out of this unit. Sigvald is a great hunter of units as well, due to the strike first mechanic, with getting attacks equal to the charges it is great when you role high, a lot of the time I was, this meant that I could have a great option again in the double fight as he strikes first and then the strike last is countered out and normal sequencing resumes so he would activate twice before my opponent and allowing no ward saves. Highlight was charging an unwounded Thanqoul, lifting him, piling in to an unwounded Verminlord and lifting him as well. Siggy did me proud on my way to a 4-1. The list was great at striking in waves and generating the depravity needed to summon a keeper in 4 of my 5 games.

Brett: Slaves to Darkness is currently the most played faction in AoS, Legion of the First Prince, though, isn’t being taken as often as some others. So it’s refreshing to see a very different list with a mix of units seen often and some less common ones (including BeLakor himself). Chaos Maruader Horseman and the Warshrine make a return with the more common Chaos Knights (and the OP Mark of Nurgle – how do you kill these things), Corvus Cabal and Chosen. Everything fits into a Battle Regiment to try and control priority. With 2 Chaos Sorceror Lords and Belakor, the Soulscream Bridge is a good investment to overcome the slow movement of the Chosen.

Mobile and tanky are a hard list to play against, particularly if it goes first and those chosen get to fight twice. But equally, avoid the knights and hit those Chosen hard, and this army will struggle (it’s relatively easy to take down an unbuffed Chosen unit). That’s why the Battle Regiment is such an important choice. With so few units and so few Galletian Champions, there is play to denying them battle tactics if you don’t think you can grind them down. The knights can move extremely long distances, making it harder to avoid them, though. Losing only to a Hedonites list that could both tie them up and doesn’t mind losing models (depravity baby) as well as archers (see Phil’s write up above for how he dealt with this list and the low drops). Taking both Kharadron and Gitz is fantastic. The shorter range on Kharadron and Deamonic Speed probably played into that result.

The steamroller that is Gitz doesn’t dominate the Nurgle Knights as well as they do other mounted units. And buffed Chosen on the charge with fight twice can clear a lot of chaff. 6th is a very commendable result, particularly with a unique list.

Top Three AoS Lists for BWG: Summer Slaughter GT

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the BWG: Summer Slaughter GT that took place in Pennsylvania, USA on 23rd and 24th July. It involved a massive 102 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament. An interesting result, 2 of the lists feature White Dwarf rule adjustments and we have Seraphon. In fact the whole top 5 is made up of AoS 2 books with 6th being the highest placed. Of course 5 to 10 are all the newest of books (Skaven and Sylvaneth).

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

Brett: Tuned to excess (I know what I did there) with the most efficient Slaanesh Warscrolls combined alongside Krondspine and that Purple Sun. The result is a mobile army with brutal amounts of shooting backed by enough hitting power to remove your hammers (or anvils). This is a very interesting army which avoids any of the larger heroes (Glutos, Keeper of Secrets or Shalaxi) for Krondspine and maximum Blissbarb.

Anthony has taken advantage of the Invaders battle traits to gain a second hero for command purposes. Useful to increase the sweep of command abilities. 2 Wizards with 3 casts and denies but neither are true wizards so the list really has 3 combat heros with denies. Starting with Sigvald; he continues to be a machine, ignoring wards but has a 4+ ward, with his minimum 5 attacks hitting on 2s and wounding on 3s with Rend -2 and D3 damage. If he charges he can use his charge roll for his attacks. Invaders allow the placement of 3 units into ambush (deep strike) so there is an excellent chance of meeting him after he charges (3+ to his charge roll), of course he strikes first. Avoid hm by staying more than 15″ from the edge of the board. Any edge.

The Contorted Epitome is quite tanky in this build with +1 wound and it’s normal 2+ ward on MW. 14″ move and with Flaming Weapon (presumably on the Ravaging Claws) for 9 attacks with a rend -1 and 2 damage weapon. And ability to make other units fight after it if it charges. The Chariot and Epitome have warscroll spells to grant rerolls for 1s. The Chariot has an impressive melee profile but more importantly can retreat and charge, it inflicts mortal wounds on the charge. The Hysterical Frenzy spell inflicts more MW. These combat characters make sense when the rest of the list is mostly Blissbarb. 2 attacks but a 6+ save and 1 wound mean they will melt under pressure. With a 6″ move (but they can run and shoot) mobility is limited but they can take Sigvald up the board with them.

With the limited casting and no real wizards (who have buffed casting) getting Purple Sun out might be hard. Geminids have a CV of only 5 though and are no where near as powerful as the Purple Sun. Still they inflict MW on a unit with 1″ at the end of their movement on a 2+ and if they do they turn off commands. An army that is going to apply pressure from the start, it pretty much always wants to go second to see where the best places to drop in units. If they take Sigvald into ambush with 2 of the Blissbard Archers units their opponent is going to have real trouble. Anthony scored consistently through all rounds (26+), most of his opponents had either Eternal Conquerers or Bounty Hunters or both which this list largely negates (they are shooting you off objectives, your numbers won’t count).

Brett: It’s been a while since Kharadron Overlords have climbed to the top of the tree. Coming off a recent buff from both the mid year points (only 2 units) and White Dwarf revision Carl is one of 3 to go 5/0 in the event. He does have both the Purple Sun and Krondspine and 2 wizards to bind them thanks to the Arcane Tome. I wonder if we will see anything about the Purple Sun and Krondspine before the next Battlescroll is due in September. The general, the Aether-Khemist is an obvious choice, one of 3 Khemist only artefacts guarantees an endless spell can be cast once per game. The Purple Sun has a casting value of 8 so if there is anyway to make it a sure thing take it.

Slow moving he also hands out a re-roll wound rolls of 1 to a unit within 12″ and reduces to-hit rolls within 3″ (himself and another character typically) unless garrisoned, so he has to be on foot. His own attacks are much riskier, 3D6 with rend -2 sound great but only 9″ range make it a risky proposition. Of course he can garrison a vessel. The Navigator is here for his dispel and reroll run and charges for vessels if they are visible to him. Lastly the Admiral, who was the most changed by White Dwarf here. He lost 3 of his 4 unique command abilities, keeping the ability to allow a unit to fire even if it had run (Master of the Skies). Flaming Weapon is an interesting choice, he has reroll hits and wounds against monsters and heroes.

He is a small beatstick with only 3 attacks, -2 rend, 2 damage. He can divert wounds to the Arkanaut Companies (Skyfarers). Otherwise 3 battle line Arkanauts with minimal upgrades, Thunderers for some punch. With limited capacity in the flying units I would garrison the Thunderers and forgo the hero buffs to minimise their exposure. All of the KO shooting units have quite short ranges, typically 18″ or less except for the boats. The addition of the Purple Sun to increase saving throws for adjacent units with the number of shots from even the Arkanauts is a great combo. The Krondspine is pure distraction and menace, it takes a lot to deal with but can’t easily be ignored. In melee he can delete weaker units and at least bracket most bigger heroes in a single turn.

His highest ranked opponent was 11th, so it’s not clear how much we can take from his matchups. Most of the armies this went against were a bit short on shooting with the exception of his 2nd opponent. 5/0 is no small accomplishment and the list is quite different with so few boats and mostly footsloggers who aren’t riding.

Brett: The last of the 5/0 armies coming in 3rd with an absolute hero hammer of a army. Over a 1000 points in heroes, some skinks and Saurus to fill those pesky battleine and 3 Bastiladons because why not. The inclusion of Horrorghast in interesting and the decision to play into the Triumph (Inspired). Those 40 points could have upgraded Skinks to Saurus or Chronomatic Cogs for casting rerolls. I wonder what Michael thinks after the event. Again this army wasn’t paired into any of the top 10 armies so not a lot can be drawn from the matchups.

Kroak is an amazing wizard, only Nagash and Teclis match him with 4 casts/unbinds and no range limitation on his unbinds. He adds +2 to casts, can make nearby units fly and give a +1 to save. He’s very hard to kill so those spells are there the whole game. The Astrolith is also a wizard and the Engine of the Gods has some decent combat prowess but is mostly here for the Cosmic Engine. Thunder Lizard means it rolls twice. Celestant-Prime is a SCE ally, their most expensive non dragon hero.

24″ shooting attack (D3 MW to units with 6″ of a point) and the mighty Ghaz Maral hammer. Starting at 3 attacks, -3 rend, 3 damage hitting on 3s and wounding on 2s he gains 2 attacks for each turn you leave him in reserve. Once a turn he can change a dice roll, including a charge roll. Arrive in Turn 3 with 7 attacks and a guaranteed turn or bring him in earlier if things are going badly. He is likely to delete any smaller hero when he arrives and is even a good chance (with help) to force an incarnate to lose a level.

The Bastiladons are rocking an extra 2 wounds, taking 4 wounds to bring them below a 1+ save. I know, stupid GW a 1+ roll always fails, except for Bastiladons and moral (40k). Anyway all of them are using the Ark of Sotek for maximum attacks (18 at top bracket) looking for MWs on 6s. Hunter Battalions are less common as well so there is a good chance of a monstrous action affecting opponents. A Thunder Lizard army with all of the big toys as we’ve come to know is pretty effective and has done extremely well here.

Brett: 4/1 only gets you to 15th place in this tournament, only getting his Grand Strategy 3 times with the dropped game seeing Sam slide. The new Season 1 Battle Traits and Grand Strategies are that much harder. I am not sure that Show of Dominance is a good pick, it’s quite risky trying to place a GV unit in each quarter. Blades of Khorne can summon additional veterans though through Blood Tithe points which you earn by killing units. And that’s what this army is built for.

With Skarbrand and 2 more Bloodthirsters as well as a Demon Prince this army moves fast and hits very very hard. Or whiffs (nothing personal Skarbrand). Getting to 4 points shouldn’t be hard unless your opponent is super elite. 4 points grants 10 Bloodletters. Back to the heroes – the Crimson Crown is a good choice on the Demon Prince allowing him to use Bloodslicked Ground for free. Mage eater for a deny in an almost castless army (the Slaughterpriest has a deny as well) and Skullshard Mantle, because Blades of Vengenace must take it, round out the enhancements. Blood Scarifice allows the generation of Blood Tithe, farming 5 a game, at the cost of something cheap (Centigors or Bloodreavers).

13 drops (not 8) and 131 points without summoning Sam had a tough road facing 3 new books in his first 3 rounds and only dropping one. His last game was Lumineth, and interesting problem for a melee army. Solid effort Sam.
