This is the top three AoS lists for CTC Age Of Sigmar Championship Open that took place in Ottawa, Canada on the 13th and 14th of May. It involved 22 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament. The tournament was broken into 2 rounds, one of 3 games and one of 2 games (2nd day). The results are for the combined placings, overall winners are slightly different reflecting standings after day 1 (first 3 rounds).
As this event had less than 25 players attending there won’t be any list comments here as the guys will be concentrating on the larger events of the week.

Christian had a great series of games and managed to pull off some huge charges with his Zombie Dragons against Owen Jacksons Kharadron army (2 12″ charges!). Christian has kindly given us a brief synopsis of his list below.
Christian Moore: There’s very little subtlety to the list, you have one ethereal dragon and then Neferta either makes the other dragon or the bloodknights ethereal depending on the situation, largely it moves as one castle staying within her -1 to hit aura. Make use of her redeploy at the start with her and your 3 key units so you get to see your opponents deployment regardless of drops.
Skeletons tag objectives and then it’s just a high pressure list that pins people back deals a lot of damage at the same time as being super tanky.

Army Faction: Sylvaneth – Subfaction: Oakenbrow – Grand Strategy: Take What’s Theirs – Triumph: Inspired – Seasons of War: The Dwindling
LEADERS Treelord Ancient (330) – Spells: Regrowth, Verdant Blessing Drycha Hamadreth (320)* – Spells: The Dwellers Below, Verdant Blessing Warsong Revenant (300)* – General – Command Traits: Spellsinger – Artefacts of Power: The Vesperal Gem – Spells: Treesong, Verdant Blessing – Aspects of the Champion: Fuelled by Ghurish Rage Battlemage (100)* – Magic of the Realms: Wildform (Ghur) Spirit of Durthu (350)** – Artefacts of Power: Greenwood Gladius
Daniel had a great result at the weekend, which included the scalps of Marc Brookes Skaven and Tom Bell’s Big Waaagh. I’ll let him describe his list to you…
Daniel Scott: Big trees teleporting around! what’s not to love. Oakenbrow makes it so that until they are on their last wound remaining any of the treelords or spirit of durthu wont bracket which is big for the spirit of durthu keeping his sword on 6 damage effectively all the time!. The Treelord ancients ability to pop a wood up anywhere on the board combos with all of the tree monsters have a teleport on warscroll and our Warsong revenant having spellsinger which lets him cast through an awakened wyldwood in the same manner as spell portal essentially but he can’t throw endless spells through them now. The warsong revenant also has vesperal gem allowing him to cast treesong through a wood which cannot be unbinded and will increase the rend of your units melee attacks when they are near that wood good to make durthu rend 3 or turn Drychas attacks into rend 2/3. Drycha is a 10 wound monster who can pump out a lot of shots at rend 1 dmg 1 that do mortals on 6s to hit, my favourite thing to do is combo her with a treelord or two so she can unleash hell and then the treelord can make one of the units that charged fight last. The dryads are there to either screen if needed or teleport around into a better position for you. The Spiteswarm hive is great when you don’t roll a 1, of course! giving you a +3 to move and charge or worsening the rend of incoming attacks to a unit, great for being offensive or defensive.
Overall the list is pretty durable and does have access to some healing in terms of a spell or being near an wood/overgrown terrain feature, all the big guys are on a 3+ save there are no ward saves, with this army you are able to position yourself better to counter this and hopefully only have fights that you want to hide away from shooting if needed. Thanks to the maneuverability of the army battle tactics are normally easy to score a great first turn one if you go first (which normally happens due to the high drops) is to complete a charge after using walk the spirit paths, a buffed up durthu can get a +5 to his charge meaning you only need a 4 hit something and then teleport out so he can receive the buffs again next turn. Overall, the list is a tonne of fun to play and really gives your opponents headaches in terms of deployment and playing out there turns!

Allegiance: Sylvaneth – Glade: Oakenbrow – Mortal Realm: Ghur – Grand Strategy: The Day is Ours! – Triumphs: Inspired
Leaders Spirit of Durthu (350) – Artefact: Greenwood Gladius Warsong Revenant (300)* – General – Command Trait: Spellsinger – Lore of the Deepwood: Treesong – Aspect of the Champion: Fuelled by Ghurish Rage Treelord Ancient (330)* – Lore of the Deepwood: Regrowth Battlemage (100)* – Mortal Realm: Ghur – Allies
Yep, another Oakenbrow list! But both are a little different to one another. Ash was on the verge of being champion, only to lose to Christian’s Soulblight.
Ash Coleman: I was playing Oakenbrow, which made my treelords battleline. The other main benefit of Oakenbrow is that it allows the treelord, treelord anicent, and Durthu fight at top bracket unless they have 1 wound left, but even then, you drop 1 bracket.
I also went with the burgeoning as my season of war. This allowed my units to have a 6+ ward unless they made a charge. It was hard to decide between this and the dwindling for the reroll cast, but having cogs in the list allows me to essentially have both.
The idea of the list is to make Durthu as reliable as possible as he will be doing all the heavy lifting. The main combo is giving Durthu +5 to charge from the spiteswarm hive and the battle mage. Skaeth’s Wild Hunt is in the list for +1 to wound spell. So with an AOA or titanic duel, Durthu can be 2s and 2s. The treelord ancient has a once per game ability to summon a Wyldwood anywhere on the board. This allows Durthu to get where he needs to be but also allows Warsong to cast Treesong, which is a +1 to rend spell. The Warsong can measure spells from Wyldoods with the command trait Spellsinger. All this combined with the Greenwood Gladius artefact for the extra D3 attacks makes Durthu a real threat.
All of the treelords can teleport in the movement phase. These are the units going out and getting the objectives while Durthu caused chaos. With a 3+ save and 6+ ward, they can tank a lot. They also have the strike last monster reaction, so even if you get charged, you’ll have a chance to strike them first. They also have a great ability that when you hit an enemy with any of their attacks in combat, they can’t pile in. This is great for tagging the ends of units. The main problem with the treelords is that they are not elite, so they can’t issue commands to themselves. So usually I’d send the treelord anicent with one of them to give an AOA, AOD, or reroll charge if required.
The Warsong has a great warscroll spell that can do AOE mortal wounds to enemy units with 9″ on a Wyldwood. It’s great for finishing units, clearing screens, and killing enemy GCs, and with the Spellsinger command trait I mentioned earlier, he can do it from the other side of the board.

Both Declan and I being Orruk players kept an eye on Joshua’s results all weekend. With the FAQ being released a few days before that effectively killed the Rogue Idols, we knew this would be their last hurrah…
This being the last hurrah for the Idols (unbeknownst), I had a great time smashing and bashing and getting smashed and bashed. The army list with a Maw-Krusha, 2 Rogue Idols, 2 Warchanters, 2 Brute Units and some Ard’boyz is surprisingly fast being a 2 drop I’m hoping for the chance to go first, With mighty destroyers and some good roll’s it hits hard especially with the Idols being violent furied by the Warchanters and a cheeky 3D6” charge from get em beat, a turn 1 charge can seal the deal either way.
My first opponent was a TreeMan list, who hid in his trees at the back edge, I managed to do some damage but not enough, then got out manuvered and picked apart.
My second opponent was Slaanesh, I got priority first turn, and my opponent cheekily placed The Masque 3” from my army preventing mighty destroyers, but allowing a turn 1 “This one’s mine”. It was then a game of trying not to get shot off of the board which my Idols failed but the Krusha survived to go after the big birdie but failed due to the one attack ability on big bird, it was a close game but a loss nonetheless.
My third game was a Be’ Lakor list with Nurgle Knights, Slaanesh Chosen, Khorne Varanguard, and a bridge. He won first priority and did what I was going to do if I had won. He met me at my lines, and a slog fest ensued with one Idol sitting out a turn or two (thanks Be’Lakor) I won the slog fest but not the mission.
My fourth game was against another Slaves, this time with a couple of chariots but still Nurgle Knights and 2 units of Khorne Varanguard. The Idols and Krusha this time picked apart The Slaves whilst the brutes and ard’boyz scored me points.
The last game was against some ghosts who enjoyed a few turns not dying to the Idols and eating the Krusha.
Five great games against five wonderful opponents with beautiful armies.
The Idols are now on 160MM bases and being repurposed for a three Krusha list. It is sad to see the Idols are no more as they are a wonderfully characterful unit. I was happy to win best in faction (yeah for Default Medal) and amazed to be nominated for best painted, I would just like to thank everyone who helped organise and run the event, myself and my mate, who I travelled up with both had a wonderful time, great laughs and enjoyable games.

The Top Three AoS Lists
Army Faction: Blades of Khorne – Subfaction: Bloodlords – Grand Strategy: The Day is Ours! – Triumph: Bloodthirsty
LEADERS Bloodsecrator (110)* Realmgore Ritualist (100)* – Prayers: Killer Instinct, Unholy Flames Bloodmaster (110)** – General – Prayers: Blood Sacrifice, Bloodbind – Aspects of the Champion: Fuelled by Ghurish Rage Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury (330)** – Artefacts of Power: Ar’gath, the King of Blades Slaughterpriest (110)** – Bloodbathed Axe – Prayers: Bronzed Flesh, Killer Instinct
BATTLELINE Claws of Karanak (100)* Claws of Karanak (100)* Blood Warriors (190)*** – Blood Champion – Icon Bearer – Paired Goreaxes – Goreglaive Bloodletters (360)*** – Bloodreaper – 2 x Icon Bearer – 2 x Hornblower
Alice: Still feels weird to see Khorne in the top spot and a nice mix of mortals and daemons to boot. Claws of Karnak go up front to create some early momentum, capturing center points (or desecrate in the right battle maps), and get merced early for cheap and easy blood tithes. Then most of the army comes up the rear to kill what just got stuck in.
Bloodsecrator, Bloodmaster, Slaughterpriest, and Realmgore Ritualist are all support characters. Bloodsecrator granting +1 attack once per game and a 4+ rally for mortals. Bloodmaster teams up with the Bloodletters to give them +1 to wound. Slaughterpriest is the anti-magic choice and Realmgore Ritualist helps them secure ground on objectives.
Most of the rest of the units exist to murder, as Khorne Approves. Garrek’s Reavers exist to grant blood tithes when they kill a model, great for swinging for chaff. Everything else basically hits like a hammer, and Skullcrushers are pretty durable all the same, too. Last but not least, of course, is the Bloodthirster when you absolutely need something dead. His Artefact lets him cut through wards for any would-be Nurgle hosts who might try and hold him back.

ALL the Squigs! This list is still very effective, as proven by Robert guiding it to 2nd place. What’s hard to believe is that the list would have cost around 165 points less before the last Battlescroll. Gitz have maintained their 55% win rate, so I can see herds going up by perhaps another 5-10 points next time around….

LEADERS Keeper of Secrets (400)* – General – Command Trait: Strength of Goodhood – Shining Aegis – Artefact: The Crown of Dark Secrets – Universal Spell Lore: Flaming Weapon The Masque (140)* Contorted Epitome (190)* – Lore of the Magnificent: Phantasmagoria – Aspect of the Champion: Fuelled by Ghurish Rage
UNITS 22 x Blissbarb Archers (300)* 11 x Blissbarb Archers (150)* 11 x Blissbarb Archers (150)* 5 x Blissbarb Seekers (200)* 10 x Slickblade Seekers (400)*
Alice: Honestly, it is comforting how Hedonites lists havent’s changed a ton – they just got better. Blissbarb Archers launch a ton of suppressing fire, and the Seekers tag them with a -1 to saves for the turn before the Slickblades charge in.
The Keeper of Secrets remains a terror in combat, should you need something bigger. With Strength of Godhood, the Crown of Dark Secrets and Flaming weapon we’re looking at 3 Rend -3, Damage 7 claw attacks if near the target of the Crown of Dark Secrets. And that’s if they weren’t tagged by the Seekers.
The Contorted Epitome and Masque round things out with some solid utility pieces. The Epitome can cast its warscroll spell for +1 to wound against an enemy unit, and Phantasmagoria to pull out anything that gets into combat too early. Or it can cast Mesmerising Mirror to help control the enemy’s movement to a place it finds more beneficial.
The Masque operates as a better replacement for tunnel master, able to pop up almost anywhere it wants within 3″ of the enemy, and its pretty damn good in combat too, able to take down most medium hammers and chaff and secure the point for itself.

Army Faction: Ossiarch Bonereapers – Army Subfaction: Petrifex Elite – Grand Strategy: Take What’s Theirs – Triumphs: Bloodthirsty

OTHER 2 x Morghast Archai (240)* – Spirit Halberd 2 x Morghast Archai (240)* – Spirit Halberd
CORE BATTALIONS: *Battle Regiment
TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)
Alice: A powerful elite list, chaff and screens need not apply. Katakros works as the mobile command center, handing out buffs like candy and debuffing the enemy. The Boneshaper offers healing to keep the Immortis Guard protecting it alive (while casting Drain Vitality on the enemy), while the Ossifector buffs the Morghasts with -1 Rend.
Stalkers do Stalker things, they absolutely cut stuff up with their Rend -2 Damage 2 and 3 attacks in precision stance. Slap Bludgeon on there if that’s not enough rend. The Immortis Guard help body guard the delicate mages, and if they get into combat they can fight twice to good effect.
The Archai are like the glue holding this together, not quite as many attacks as the stalkers or immortis guard they are almost as lethal. They have a 5+ ward and block command abilities, making them a great escort for the stalkers. With the Ossifector thats 6 Rend -3 Damage 3 attacks. Which goes further when your opponent can’t use all out defence. Ouch!

At the Woehammer GT this weekend we were blessed with 30 great armies that really helped with the look and the feel of the game and Peter and I really enjoyed looking at them all.
In order to let the players judge the winner of Best Painted, we chose a top 5 and Peter has taken some great photos. Here they are in all their glory.
Ben Adlem – Idoneth Deepkin – Best PaintedWINNER!
Sean Ditchfield – Nighthaunt
Daniel Scott – Sylvaneth
Joshua Boxall – Ironjawz
Christian Cameron – Lumineth Realmlords
Well done to all the chosen 5 and everyone else at the tournament. Great armies and very inspiring!
We thought it may be fun to have a little rest feed, which we’d update over the course of the weekend as results come in. So keep coming back to this post for the latest news!
Mon 11:20 Peter: Thanks again to all those who came. It’s the morning after, and I’ve got the full results for you:
Sun 19:45 Declan: I’m back home after awards, and pack-up. Firstly a big thank you to all our players. It was a great event; all games were finished in 2:30 hours with no problems, and there were very few rules queries. A great example of the great players in AoS! Well done all.
Our winners were:
1st Place 5-0 Christian Moore – SBGL
2nd Place 4-1 Daniel Scott – Sylvaneth
3rd Place 4-1 Ash Coleman – Sylvaneth
Best General (Woehammer best 4-1 by army strength) – Baz Norman Jr – LRL
Best Painted Ben Adlem – Idoneth
Best Sports – Sean Ditchfield
Wooden Spoon – Daniel Tadman
Well done to our best in factions as well!
Peter and I are going to take a break and then come back with some considered thoughts on the event and – of course – the Top Three!
Sun 15:15-15:30 Peter & Declan: All the results as we get them now:
Table 1: Christian (26) bt Ash (24)
Table 2: Daniel S (27) bt Tom (19)
Table 3: Marc & Paul Tied Game (!) at 25 each
Table 4: Owen (27) bt Daniel W (19)
Table 5: Baz (21) bt James (16)
Table 6: Rob (28) bt Sam (13)
Table 7: Ben (28) bt Mira (13)
Table 8: Peter (28) bt Garry (14)
Table 9: Phil – Stormcast (20) bt Benjamin – Slaves to Darkness (18)
Table 10: Michael (19) bt Jake (16)
Table 11: Sean (27) bt Joshua (11)
Table 12: Christian (23) bt Thomas (12) (in the LRL mirror)
Table 13: Adam (27) bt Daniel (16)
Sun 15:11 Peter: Results are coming in thick and fast now. Owen Jackson and his Kharadron managed to chew through the 27 Chaos Spawns of Daniel White’s Beast of Chaos list. Well done Owen!
Sun 15:10 Peter: We have a champion! Top table results have come in and Christian Moore and his Soulblight Gravelords have sucked the life out of Ash Coleman’s Sylavneth 26-24.
Sun 15:00 Declan: As we enter the last 30 minutes there’s another result and it’s a big one on Table 2 with wood beating screaming. Daniel (Sylvaneth) beat Tom (Big Waaagh!) 27-19. Daniel is on a 4-1 so in with a chance of 2nd or 3rd and Tom finishes on 3-2. A good result for Big Waaagh!
Sun 14:24 Declan: First result is in: Ben (Idoneth) (28) beat Mira (Slaanesh) (13); so Ben finishes on 3-2 and Mira 2-3
Sun 14:17 Peter: Here’s an interesting situation (one that an article may follow on in the future). Table 6 Rob Morris (Slaanesh) has screened out almost all of the board on turn 2 against Sam Barker (Beasts of Chaos). Sam decided has attempted to use ambush to full effect. Unfortunately for him, Rob managed to kill the few units that were deployed on the board and then processed to zone out much of the table edge. Sam is able to move one unit 6″ and therefore has a small pocket to see how many models he can bring on. But, anything he doesn’t bring on is effectively slain this turn.
Sun: 13:05 Declan: And we have another award at the start of Round 5. Baz Norman Jr has won Best in Faction for Lumineth Realmlords with a game in hand. Meanwhile on the top table Ash (Sylvaneth) is facing-off against Christian (Soulblight Gravelords) for the big trophy whilst on the bottom tables we’ve done a quick swap to ensure Daniel didn’t play 3 Lumineth armies in one tournament… so we could have no players in the 0-5 bracket.
Sun Peter12:09: I’ve taken shots of the other four nominations for the best painted award.
Ben Adlem – Idoneth Deepkin
Sean Ditchfield – Nighthaunt
Daniel Scott – Sylvaneth
Joshua Boxall – Ironjawz
Sun 11:45 – Sun midday Declan: The final results are starting to come in
Table 7: Baz – LRL (23) bt Michael – Khorne (13)
Table 12: Peter – OBR (25) bt Adam – OBR (6) in the OBR mirror
Sun 11:40 Declan Lunch has arrived and before the expected flurry of results, we have a fourth come in from table 10 where Ben’s Idoneth have beaten Sean’s Nighthaunt 23-9. It was a massively bloody (or bloodless as they are ghosts) turn 1 for Sean that gave him an uphill battle.
Sun 11:33 Peter: With Christian’s game over, I took the opportunity to get some close up shots of his best painted nominated army.
Sun 11:31 Peter: Phil Nunn’s Stormcast has seen off Thomas Care and his Lumineth with a score of 21-7 on Table 13.
Sun 11:26 Declan: From the top tables to nearer the bottom table 14 is finished and Garry’s Sylvaneth has taken out the win in some style with a 26-3 victory over Christian’s LRL.
Sun 11:04 Declan: With 1 hour to go, there’s a couple of tables nearing conclusions with the Spawn spam struggling against Sylvaneth on table 2 and falling to a defeat, and Eltharion dying to an Unleash Hell from Stormcast on table 13.
Sun 10:25 Declan: Peter & I have chosen our top 5 for best painted contest:
Christian Cameron – Lumineth Realm Lords
Ben Adlem – Idoneth Deepkin
Sean Ditchfield – Nighthaunt
Daniel Scott – Sylvaneth
Joshua Boxall – Ironjawz
Decision will be by player vote over the lunch break and we’ll get some pictures then.
Sun 09:55 Declan: The games are in full swing and dice are being rolled in anger… so some more pictures.
Sun 09:40 Declan: We’ve called an audible on the scoring system for Painting and Sports (which don’t affect positions). So Best Painted will be from a shortlist nominated by Peter & me, and Sports will be one vote per player at the end of game 5. This will reduce admin at tournament end and we’re slightly concerned with the number of partially filled in forms!
Sun 09:30 Declan: We’ve had some drop outs over night and so Sean Ditchfield has won best Nighthaunt having won the mirror yesterday. We still have 13 tables though and it’s all to play for. Join us for updates throughout the day
Sun 08:00 Declan: We’re awake (well I am), and just getting ready for another day of gaming at Battlefield Hobbies in Daventry. It’s been a great first day with very few rules queries and all the players finishing each round on time. With the KO being beaten by Soulblight Gravelords and Big Waaagh sneaking past Slaanesh with the Battle Tactic Wait for It Ladz in game 3 the result is really open to any of the top four.
Tom – Big Waagh
Christian – Soulblight Gravelords
Ash – Sylvaneth
Daniel W – Beasts of Chaos
It’s great to have four different armies in the top four at this stage, but all could change on day two. We welcome the players back at 9am (BST) with the first game at 9:30am. Hope you can join us for some more updates throughout the day.
Sat 19:15 Declan: That brings our coverage for the day to an end. The Round 4 draw is available in BCP. Good luck to our players tomorrow where 4 are vying for the 4-0 and 3 players are trying to avoid the 0-4. Wish them all luck and follow your armies tomorrow when we return for gaming at 9:30am BST.

Sat 14:00 Declan: We have our first result. After his bruising encounter with Kharadron Overlords in game 1, Baz is back on track with a victory against Daniel’s Slaves to Darkness.
Sat 13:55 Declan: Sorry for the short delay in next update… but I’ve been wandering around looking at all the lovely armies on display. Some great hobby out there.
Sat 13:00 Peter: Here’s some pictures of the beautiful armies that we have here at the tournament.
Sat 12:45 Declan: and… we’re back from lunch although all the players have started early to get ahead of the game. The draw is up on BCP for those following along and with 15 winners and 15 runners-up from the first round there’s still lots to play for.
Sat 12:10 Declan: That’s all the results in with all tables finishing on time; and the players tucking into lunch! We’ll be back at 12:45 for the start of round 2.
Sat 12:00 Peter: That’s it, round one is over and (more importantly) lunch is served!

Sat 11:50 Declan: Results coming in thick and fast now!
Table 7 Christian (24) bt Paul (16)
Table 10 Peter (22) bt Tom (16)
Table 13 Garry (24) bt Ben (18)
Table 2 Tom (28) bt Mira (10)
Table 9 James (28) bt Ben (16)
Table 5 Rob (24) bt Matthew (14)
Sat 11:38 Peter: Why not see what the guys are fighting over? We’ve a narrative element running through this weekends games, as those taking part can track the story of their general as they search for the lost City of Treveglos. Why no take a look here yourself?
Sat 11:30 Declan: As we draw near the end of the round, we have a big result from Table 14. Baz’s Ravening Jaws rolled a ‘1’ turn 1 and failed to do any mortal wounds to Owen’s Khemist and the LRL got a taste of lead… and it turns out Lead > Arrows this time.
Sat 11:10 Declan: And our second result hot on the heals… Table 3 saw Ironjawz (Rogue Idols) charge into the Slyvaneth – but Slyvaneth came out on top despite Durthu deciding not to fight (failed all charges)
Sat 11:04 Peter: We’ve had our first result in, and it’s from the top table. Phil Nunn and his Stormcast saw off the threat of Daniel Tadman and his Slaves to Darkness 24-8.
Sat 10:20 Declan: Best in Faction trophies show the best our game has to offer and we were able to congratulate some heroes at the start of game 1 for their Best in Faction successes:
Big Waaagh! – Tom Bell
Blades of Khorne – Michael Maher
Fyreslayers – Jake Wright
Gloomspite Gitz – Ben Smith
Idoneth Deepkin – Ben Adlem
Ironjawz – Joshua Boxall
Kharadron Overlords – Owen Jackson
Skaven – Marc Brookes
Stormcast Eternals – Phil Nunn
Soulblight Gravelords – Christian Moore
Congratulations to them all for beating the stiff opposition to raise to the top of their factions!
Sat 10:10 Declan: The Loonshrine have fallen; having been awarded Best in Faction (Gloomspite) Ben has led the glory go to his Troggherd and the Loonshrine was battered by the Beasts of Chaos. Well done to James on Table 9
Sat 09:40 Declan: And they’re off… all players are here and Peter’s been talking some photos
Sat 09:30 Declan: Safety messages done, 0930 arrived and so the games begin… and as with any tournament there’s a car that’s late so 3 games haven’t quite started yet! Hopefully they’ll get here soon.
Sat 09:00 Peter: With everything in place late yesterday, I think we’ll all set to go this weekend. No doubt there’ll be some issues, but we’ll be able to get around anything now, I’m sure of it. The round one draw took place yesterday, and we already have two of the better-known players matched up on table 14. Baz with Lumineth, against Owen and his Kharadron. We’ll keep you updated on the score throughout the 1st round.
A few of the Age of Sigmar sites you know and love have got together and organised a little competition between us all. It’s a veritable who’s who of AoS blogging! PlasticCraic, Goonhammer, AoS Shorts, Sprues & Brews, and No Rerolls will be facing off to see who can be crowned champion. Each person taking part is choosing a Galletian Champion, tooling them up and letting them loose on the enemy bloggers! With 5 participants, Woehammer has a strong representation in the tournament. Hopefully, we don’t all go out in the first round!
It’ll be a knockout competition (think, the World Cup). Battles will take place in a 9″ x 9″ space and will be simulated on Tabletop Simulator over on Pete Brizio’s Twitch channel throughout May. The 1st round draw will be live at 11 am on Saturday, 13th May BST.
Brett
My first thought was to go Stormcast, with 19 warscrolls there had to be a contender. A Lord-Castellant fits the bill his output is a little weak. The Celestant-Prime is good but only 3 attacks (he has to be on the board). No to win this we have to look to the future, and the future is Chaos. I present the thing of unspoken nightmares, it has no use for a name, instead it reflects your darkest fears:
Credit: Brett Martin
With only 7 wounds and a 5+ save, is he mad I hear you ask? The Epitome has 2 spells, Mystic Shield goes without saying and then either Flaming Weapon or Arcane Bolt. In built casting rerolls, Horrible Fascination (within 3” no commands can be issued or received) and 2+ ward against Mortal Wounds.
That’s just the warscroll. Stongest Alone for +1 to hit and wound rolls, now hitting on 2s and wound on 3s. The Crown of Dark Secrets lets you to pick one unit at the start of your hero phase and they will only have 1 attack with their melee weapons. And finally Fuelled by Ghurish Rage for the 3+ ward.
Two ways to run him depending on priority. If our epitome has priority then we’ll take finest hour then cast flaming weapon and overwhelming acquiesce (don’t forget rerolls) before picking our target for the Crown of Dark Secrets. Assuming they’ll throw everything into that attack we’ll activate Fuelled by Ghurish Rage and after a 6” move we’ll charge. If they survive and there is a second round we’ll repeat (except the single use Fuelled by Ghurish rage).
If we don’t go first then we’ll still use Finest Hour and then pray. Before going with the sequence above.
Declan
With the Galletian Champions being foot bosses I had a lot to chose from and – although it may steal Pete’s thunder – I was definitely going for Destruction. But which one – would it be the Orruk Warclans and Big Waaagh which had done me so well, or would it be little Gitz stabbing at knees.
I was very tempted by a Loonboss with his D3 damage, but there was really only one option… go fight, or go home – and do it large! With heads exploding all around – all I would have to do is survive a round of combat (so All Out Defense)… but which chap am I referring to… well it’s got to be the Wurrgog Prophet!
Credit: Declan Waters
The Wurrgog was why I ran Big Waaagh in 2021 (that and having most of my attacks on 2+/2+ by turn 3). And he can be a monster. I’m sure by now everyone knows his Stare mechanic and with Fuelled by Ghurish Rage he can keep going until he dies and get back up (on a 3+)… then do it all again.
The key is that he must be within 12″ at the start of the hero phase to use his ability so no shenanigans – but he’ll just cast magic instead! Finally the 4+ ward makes his 7 wounds much more like 14 making him even more dificult to kill (so what if most of those 14 wounds are going to be caused by himself).
Patrick
It’s fun to play with a new toy. I recently picked up Blades of Khorne (I’m not a meta-chaser, I swear!) and have been reading and re-reading that book to prep for games. In the spirit of that research, I decided that I wanted to pull in a GC that showed off some of Khorne’s new tech pieces.
Enter: the François, the Bloodmaster.
Credit: Patrick German
The bloodmaster, on paper, is a straighforward beast. He’s a daemon priest that brings a couple of abilities to the table. I won’t touch onThe Blood Must Flow, since that will have no bearing on this event. Decapitating Blow borrows from the Kruleboyz book and deals mortal wounds on a hit roll of 6. His warscroll prayer is the equivalent of All-out Attack, but with wound rolls.
I’ve opted to make him a high priest. With no support from other units, it’s vital that his prayers are heard. I’ve also given him Ar’gath the King of Blades, which removes all wards (including Fueled by Ghurish Rage) within 3″. While I wouldn’t normally hand this off to a back-line support piece, it’s going to be extremely useful in this competition, since everyone will take FbGR.
Peter
Let’s be honest, I was always going to be the one who’d pick a Kruleboy.
The only Galletian Champion that could, maybe, possibly, get through a round or two once kitted out would be the Stab-Grot with Killaboss.
This dude can certainly pack a punch!

That’s an average of 0.75 damage before saves! His assistant is also pretty useful, being able to equip the big lug with a boss-hacka and a choice of either a Rusty Flail or skareshield. While two weapons are enticing, the flail would only kick out an average of 0.87 additional damage per turn. While the Skareshield will give our Grot a little more durability with a 3+ save instead of 4+. In number crunching terms, this would mean a – rend 1 damage weapon would have to land 18 attacks to kill him on average rather than 12 with the 4+ save. Granted, it’s unlikely our plucky grot will be facing 1 damage, no rend weapons, but even so.

As for which Subfaction, the choice had basically been made for me. With no shooting, there was no point going Big Yellers, and with a 9″ x 9″ playing area, there was no point going for Grinnin’ Blades. That left the little used Skulbugz. Basically, it forces the enemy to roll a dice before their combat with him. On a roll of 6, they’ll be forced to subtract 1 from their hit rolls.
On to the Artefact, and here a plan started to form in my mind. I went with the Tuskhelm, this would allow our plucky grot to roll a number of dice equal to their charge roll. On each 4+, he’d cause a mortal wound. Nice, right? This then made the choice of Command Trait easier, as I was left with two options that went well with the Tuskhelm. The first was Battle-lust, which would allow him to re-roll his run and charge rolls. Meaning I could try and up the number of dice I’d be rolling 4+ on for the mortals. Or I could go with Slippery Skumbag, which would allow him to retreat and charge in the same turn. I decided on the second, just in case combat went beyond one round, it would mean I had a chance to cause more mortals.
The Aspect of the Champion was a really easy one to make as Fuelled by Ghurish Rage would be the one played by every… single… champion… in the tournament.
That done, it was time to pick a name for our Grot. For this, I let the name generator on Realm of Plastic make the decision:
Ian
So I have decided to stay loyal to my first AoS faction and go with an Arkanaut Admiral. My approach here is to try and shoot them dead before they reach me and settle the grudge with my hammer if I have to. Seems a sensible and business-like approach fitting to a Kharadron Overlord Admiral. Just a shame he’s not allowed to bring his flagship…
Credit: Peter “Woehammer” Holland
Arkanaut Admiral (125) Sub-faction: Barak-Zon (+1 to hit and wound rolls for melee weapons on the charge) General Command Trait: A Scholar and an Arkanaut (Additional Footnote) Artefact: Masterwrought Armour (5+ Ward Save) Battle Trait: Grudgebreaker Rounds (+1 Rend on Missile Weapon)
Stick to the Code Artycle: Settle the Grudges (+1 to Wound Rolls against a Unit) Amendment: Trust to your Guns (Re-roll 1 hit roll of 1 in your shooting phase) Footnotes: There’s no Reward without Risk (3D6 for charge rolls) There’s no Trading with some People (Once per battle, at end of enemy shooting phase, a unit fired upon can shoot back)
The approach here is if I get first turn to basically shoot them dead. As my Masterwork Volley Pistol will be hitting on 3+, Wounding on 2+ (with the artycle) and a rend of -2 on 3 shots (with some re-rolls thrown in for good measure) he has half a chance. There is a potential 6 damage there (averaging about 4 damage without re-rolls) they should be on the ropes. And mixed with my There’s no Trading with some People footnote, I may even cause an upset to an opponent by shooting them in their own phase and then shooting them on the charge! I am seriously hoping for an Indiana Jones moment here…
The additional charge dice is just to make sure the charge roll is less likely to whiff, and I couldn’t see much else of benefit to take. The ward save will be nice and may help with survival against scrawny opponents who rely on mortal wounds to do their damage. We shall see, it will all come down to the dice!
As for a name, well I feel my Path to Glory warlord, Khreld Thundergust, should have a chance to prove himself. Maybe I will add this tournament to his backstory as a fever dream…
This is the top three AoS lists for the Spring Rubicon 2023 GT that took place in Wisconsin, USA on the 29th and 30th of April. It involved 40 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament. The event was organised by The Die is Cast crew from Youtube.
Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.
