Roland Rivera: A classic ABC (Always Be Charging) Slaves to Darkness list, this list leverages the power and consistency of Khorne Fellspear Varanguard to the max by running a bunch of them (12, to be exact) in Knights of the Empty Throne, where they all get to run and charge. Complement them with a bit of control in Be’lakor, a caster with Daemonic Speed to make their threat range even bigger, some Unmade to make sure people can’t Redeploy away from your charges, some Knights as a Swiss army knife/cleanup crew, and just dare your opponents to stop you (most of them can’t).

There was a somewhat interesting choice made in the supporting Heroes, however. Instead of spending every last one of his 2000 points, Geir Vedeld (a Slaves to Darkness pilot with proven bona fides) decided to suit an Exalted Hero up with an Arcane Tome and instead angle for a triumph bid. An interesting choice that I can see the logic behind (this build lives and dies by making its charges), and I’d be interested to know how often it resulted in a critical charge reroll. Overall, if you’re looking to build a fast, aggressive, and effective Slaves to Darkness list, here’s your blueprint.

2 x Morghast Archai (220)

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Walter Brock: We’re looking at an OBR list that went 4-1.  Choosing Petrifex Elite to make The Immortis Guard and Morghasts harder to kill in combat.  Spellcasting Savant is the go-to Grandstrat having so much synergy with Immortis guard.

The liege Kavalos with Arcane shield provides an extra cast to put up arcane shield so the Ossifector can put up Nadirite weapons. The liege also provides extra attacks making any unit hit harder.  Altogether a power army multiplier.

Katakros is the big man providing all the value.  Giving everything +1 to hit and +1 to save makes all units run at maximum efficiency.  Combo with the other buffs that the list can provide, and a simple 10-person unit could even kill gods.

The Ossifector is the Glue that holds everything together.  The Grand Strat is tied to this thing.  It buffs Morghasts with extra rend.  Has a 9-inch bubble of +1 to wound and Dark Acolyte to get a battle tactic very easily.  Everything that this little guy gives is pure gas, but if it somehow dies.  A lot of good things go away.

A unit of 5 Deathriders is a standard seen in most lists. Providing a battle tactic and being a fast uni. Deathriders can do many things from being a screen to clogging up the key piece of the opponent.  The imagination is the limit of what Deathriders can do.

A unit of 10 Mortek guard.  Act as easy filler to reach 3 battlelines. Can be a cheap screen or act as a unit to block off back line deep strikes.  While not the most stellar inclusion for the list. They can provide a lot of unspoken support for the list that nothing else really wants to do.

Three Immortis guard Unlock an easy battle tactic for OBR and help protect the Ossifector so getting the Grandstrat is more likely.

The two units of Morghasts are the stars of the show.  These units provide large amounts of Damage. Are incredibly fast and shut down commands. Whatever these guys get into will usually die.  Katakros buffing their ability to hit.  The Ossifector buffing the Rend and wound rolls, and Empower Weapons going onto a unit plus the extra attacks from the liege makes a unit of Morghasts able to take down almost any unit in the game.

This list is very good at getting its buffs reliably and dealing large amounts of damage while being difficult to kill thanks to Petrifex Elite and Katakros.  A very well-rounded list. Well done to this player.

TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000

Roland Rivera: The big boys are back in town! This is another instance of a Khorne player pushing all their chips into the center of the table with the 4-Bloodthirster build, and this pilot was in quite a gambling mood, as he chose to roll with 2 Bloodthirsters of Insensate Rage, whose damage can be inconsistent but has huge spike potential. Those two slot machines were paired with Skarbrand’s steady output and a Wrath of Khorne Bloodthirster to tie the room together via activation tricks to make combat sequencing easier.

As you’d imagine for a list with 4 300+ point models, everything else in the list reolves around supporting the big guys. Flesh Hounds and Bloodreavers pressure objectives and can be cashed in for Blood Tithe in a pinch, and a couple of Priests will sit in the back line and provide buffs (or perhaps a bit of direct damage in the form of Blood Boil). Overall, this list is highly specialized, but the thing it does is good enough to be a strong choice in an all-comers tournament.

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Carl Stokes: Another day, another KO list featuring everyone’s Old World remnant! This Gotrek list takes a slightly different approach than many others in that, rather than take one large thunderer block, it takes a slightly smaller one in order to afford a gunhauler.

I’ve already made it abundantly clear why I think Gotrek is an incredible addition to KO armies in previous write-ups so won’t wax poetic on this one, but safe to say that I think he patches a lot of the intrinsic weaknesses of KO while allowing the army to retain their core identity as a mobile firebase.

The usual cadre of characters provides support/disruption while 20 arkanauts screen in the early game before transitioning to objective holders in the mid/late game. A single gunhauler provides another way to score battle tactics and threaten little wizards while being juuuust tough enough to pin targets in place for Gotrek. The gunhauler is another excellent way to hunt down those pesky Andtorian Loci that can cause KO all sorts of problems.

But as usual, the backbone of the list lies in the 10 thunderers and Ironclad that ferries them around. The thunderers are a very tough unit that’s extremely prickly at close range and can be juiced to ridiculous levels by the characters. Generally, the classic approach to this list is to take the single unit of 15 but as the meta shifts towards more anti-shooting, the decision here was made to prioritize mobility to improve the matchup into lists that have a strong anti-shooting presence.

Will that be the case moving forward? Nobody can tell for sure, but the ability of KO to quickly adapt to a changing metagame by drawing on their ally pool and the various different skyports while still being able to easily achieve their many battle tactics is one of the many things that makes them a top-tier army.

I’ve a 2-for-1 for you today because I’m not very organised, and my head has been filled with GT planning (no excuse!). So I rather stupidly asked both PlasticCraic (thanks again Pete – check out his site if you havent already!) and Phil Marshall to comment on these lists! So you have the benefit of both the players’ point of view and an expert AoS Analysts point of view..

Phil Marshall: Gloomspite Gitz – Jaws of Mork – How did it work?

I decided to go back to my routes and play an aggro combat army. Gitz the moment are super versatile and play lots of scenarios extremely well. With this edition lots of scenarios are fight in the middle and Gitz really lean into that. Yes, they have had their fair share of points increases but the army is still super strong with all the buffs and debuffs within the list. Lets take a note of a few of the key buff pieces, Skraggy knowing the full spell lore and also being able to help dictate battle tactic scoring by being able to manipulate the moon placement. Squig boss with the pre game move and MWs in addition for squigs, honestly its mental how far that unit can move in the turn you commit to this, in addition to this you have the clammy hand command trait to try and get two units out of the shrine. Madcap & Webspinner the combo allows you get acolytes in for hoarfrost, without being able to receive the commands on squigs hoarfrost works as your all out attack as minimum but when you can be hitting on 2s at potentially rend 3 with 150 attacks you really do see the value, the madcap also has moonface mommet to give a unit -1 to their save. Sneaky snufflers, 2+ 5 up ward yes please but oh wait if under the moon and you roll a 5+ you get an extra attack as well; mental. Then my buff piece MVP, these lads are sublime, the -1 to hit aura spell, the no command ability spell stoping redeploy from your none re-rollable charge on the herd, then a static aura of either +1 rend or plus 1 to run and charge. The list is then bolstered out by two units of 5 boingrots to grab objectives, do surround and destroy and clear screens, the real punch comes from the 36 herd and the unit of 15 boingrots.

How did the list play the? Aggressively, but when it needed to be. The way I played the list a lot of the time was as a castle waiting to capitalise on opportunities to explode out of it and ensuring that I was in range of all my auras and buff pieces ready to maximise my next movement phase. Depending on match up would be dependant on what would be used to screen with, if I was concerned about my opponent going first the screen was the two 5 of bounders and the terrain piece (assuming no monsters). Then I would have the hammers sat just off the screen ready to counter charge in my turn and make my opponent second guess about coming in. If I knew I was under no threat top of 1 I would screen with my gobbapalooza and snufflers and leave a squig sized gap as a screen as we all know 25mm is less than an inch so you can move through those gaps. The herd would then be set up in between so that if I wanted to maximise the potential hero phase move I was at no risk of missing out on the buffs from gobbapalooza and the herd at the start of movement. One of the hoarfrost wizards would also be close enough to make sure I can cast hoarfrost. Hoarfrost for me was the main spell I was always trying to cast as it makes the squig herds output substantially better no matter what you roll, I found myself always using it for hit rolls. The herd were always used at the 1st wave to commit and then follow up with the 15 bounders after the herd were now out of the buff ranges. This dual threat is horrible to deal with for your opponent again due to the speed in which your units can get across the table. In my opinion there isn’t a unit in the game that can survive the punch from either of these units when you have the buffs on. In the match ups that were perceived “easier” you can just throw the list at your opponent and its extremely hard for them to deal with, the speed it gets to them, the weight of dice you are throwing combined with the rend and damage made them quite straightforward. In conclusion it’s a super fast aggro army that suits a player that likes to put pressure on your opponent, however, it can play the passive game till you need to push out. It is the complete toolbox of buffs and debuffs that is a real pain to play around for your opponent.

Pete Atkinson: We talk a lot in this game about “skill ceiling”, but less so about “skill floor”. I’d argue that filling your list with Squigs and pushing them forward again and again has an abnormally high floor, in that you could teach a small child to execute and they’d win a lot of games, much like Terrorgheists back in their day. There’s only so badly you can do with a list like this.

All the same, 5-0s with Squigs remain rare, and that’s what separates the Bosses from the Gits. Phil has encountered a broad range of challenges in this event, encompassing high-mobility combat giga-damage (S2D) and Order gunlines with phenomenal straight line speed (Fuethan), as well as highly competitive KO, layered screens in Nighthaunt and ambushing BOC rounding out the opposition¹. Phil managed to react accordingly to opponents that were corner-deployed, well screened or even off the board entirely, and that’s where the skill ceiling part comes in.

In terms of what the list does, it’s really just Squigs 102. I’d argue that Squigs 101 was profiting from the bent Hoppers interaction with Rally (deliberately breaking coherency to get outside of 3″ then Rally back), but since that got swiftly nipped in the bud, these are the standard units you’ve been seeing used in tandem. Gobbapalooza gets you a tough wizard with Recursion which also dishes out -1 rend; Moonface Mommet adds further to the rend jamboree.

Given Phil’s smart use of Squig Lure though (allowing for Squigs to reroll charges when they can’t use CAs at all), I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that he sometimes used the ‘Palooza for the +1 to run and charge ability instead of extra rend. With the Subfaction attacks and Squigboss buffs, the damage is already there, so it’s just the delivery mechanism you need to lock down; and making it impossible to fail a 3″ charge is massive. Those charge consistency bonuses can be the difference between being written about here on Woehammer, and spending the time before your next game pissing and moaning about how your dice fucked you.

Squig Herd in particular love Hoarfrost as a way to fix their 4+ to Hit Roll and it’s notable that Phil has doubled down on that for redundancy, rather than being tempted with Merciless Blizzard. You’re not going to have units camping within 12″ in front of you for protracted combats, because you’ve already Squigged them off the board.

Chuck the Herd forward, merck a bunch of stuff, pop out some Battleshock mortals. Send the Boingrots in next and do the same. Then rezz back your original Squigs (with the Clammy Hand CT to help) and at that point your opponent probably shakes your hand.

I played a tiny handful of games with Squigs myself when the book first dropped and that was enough for me to get bored (I’m talking Early-Third-Edition-Giants-Standing-On-Circles levels of bored), but the fact remains that guiding them to the full 5-0 is an extra level of challenge, and one that very few have proven capable of thus far. If you’re looking for a way to hit consistent rankings points for your local Masters though – or just keen to chase a podium – then I’d suggest you look no further, because this list is as tight as an Allopex’s arse. Everything is geared towards and refined around executing your gameplan, with vigour and consistency. Ruthless.

¹Bear in mind I haven’t seen the full lists Phil played against – but looking at the Factions and Subfactions he encountered, we can have an educated guess.

Michael Attali: This was a test for the WCW in Atlanta where I’ll be representing France (as I did during the AoS worlds Team’s Tournament).

So Vyrkos is the best sub faction in my advice (tactic and strategy wise) even though LoN performs more, I have seen that it is more due to the fact that most people don’t know how to play against LoN.

The main part of my army is 120 zombies (60-40-20) seconded by 20 skeletons to be buffed by Gorslav with the Ulfenkarni Phylacteri. The aim of this portion of the army is to take primaries with it’s board presence. and recursion.

Belladamma with 2×10 Wolves, serves as a shield for the zombies during deployment and to click units or far away objectives.
A third pack is set up by Volga to protect herself with the Vyrkos heroic action.
Volga can pin some units with the lycancurse, creating more wolves and more recursion.

The three parts click together perfectly, I usually do all the primaries and secondaries. If you come at me you are pinned by the zombies and showered in debuffs. I can then counter attack with Under the killing Moon + Hoarfrost+ Danse Macabre (and maybe blizzard).

The grand strategy is easy against most armies except, for example, against Benjamin Savva on Nexus collapse, who had low damage input, so I had to put 3 units in reserves (40-20 zombies and 10 Wolves) and never bring them to the table. So, from turn 4, I would be able to bring them on with Gorslav, but you do score the maximum amount of points most of the time

*Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000

Carl Stokes: Everyone knows I’m a fervent believer in the Gospel of Gotrek, and it’s lists like this that reinforce why he’s just such an incredible asset for KO. One of the major weaknesses of KO as a faction is their inability to reliably handle fast chunky monsters that can catch our boats and survive being shot long enough to make mincemeat of our troops. This is where Gotrek steps in and immediately turns challenging matchups into easy wins.

The rest of the army is also classic and battle-tested. The shooting-themed ironclad full of thunderers and characters with the Admiral-Khemist-Navigator combo designed to automatically unbind a single vital spell once per game while providing some movement shenanigans and consistent unbind attempts is something everyone expects to see when playing KO. Add in 20 arkanauts to screen and hold backfield objectives and there’s the army.

Which brings us to the greatest Old World Dawi to ever wield an axe… Gotrek! When wielded appropriately, he provides an immovable bulwark and melee blender that can reliably remove almost anything in the game. He’s the sort of model you run into the midfield and then just threaten the meat of your opponent’s army every turn. Sure, you may not reliably make a 10” charge, but you only have to do so once and you win the game. Worried something might get into the ironclad? With Gotrek around, nothing is gonna want to be within about 12” of his small but mighty footprint.

Specifically, he provides a way for KO to immediately remove things like Kragnos, Stonehorns, blobs of infantry, blobs of cavalry, blobs of monstrous infantry, etc, etc. People often forget that it’s fairly hard to pile in a blender unit into Gotrek to maximize their attacks into him, which means that units of 6 pigs or necropolis stalkers just simply can’t get enough models in combat to take him out before he minces the squad. And reducing all damage to one BEFORE his 3+ ward means that it’s reeeeeally hard to take him out (plus don’t forget he can Heroic Recovery if need be)!

Just to hammer home how stupid high Gotrek’s output is, I’ve included a little damage table of his average output into various saves:

Except that’s only one activation. And he gets to fight TWICE per combat phase. So yeah, that’s why he’s the Goat..rek.

As for the way this army plays, it’s fairly similar to many other top KO lists. You’ve got the incredibly high output shooting with 4+ rally for the thunderers and ironclad support backed up by ancillary characters designed to get the most out of both the thunderers and the boat. This is the sort of army that will absolutely dominate any low objective battle plan while likely going down early on points when playing multi-objective scenarios. But it rarely matters, since you’re just going to be erasing your opponent with overwhelming firepower and smashing them with Gotrek if they try to threaten your firebase. An incredible list and an excellent result. Well done!

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Geir Vedeld: What I like the most here is that it has several strong elements. It plays well on Battle Tactics. It has a strong control / alpha element combined with the opportunity to slow play.

The lone Mounted Chaos Lord can flank easily. He would, of course, be better on Karkadrak, but the list is 2000 points on the spot. He supplies the list with the battle tactic Lust for Power, which is otherwise harder to get to. With Conqueror’s Crown, he takes objectives from Chaff. Also, he is difficult to kill for chaff units, making it an investment for the opponent to take him out.

The 3-man unit of Varanguard is an MVP. It can either be sent on a mission alone, killing as many small units as possible before dying. Taking out 200+ points with it at an early stage is often quite important late game and ruins plans and battle tactics on the other side of the table.

The drawback with the Chosen is that it is slow, and the Knights of the Empty Throne sub-faction gives speed and punishes the opponent for making mistakes in positioning, etc. Chosen reduces that opportunity.

The drawback with Varanguard is that they do very little damage if they are tagged (by e.g., Murderlust from Khorne). Without retreat and charge and a corner tag, Varanguard are basically doing very little they are supposed to do.

Roland Rivera: Slaves to Darkness continues its post-Battlescroll ascent with another strong showing. This list pairs the devastating offensive power of Khorne Varanguard with an extra dose of speed by putting them in the Knights of the Empty Thorne subfaction, which enables them to run and charge. On the defensive front, this list runs a reinforced unit of Nurgle Chosen as its solid center that can take a hard punch and give one back. It also features a Sorcerer to hang out near the Chosen, providing Ward saves and Daemonic Power. Lastly, it also adds a dash of board control by featuring Be’lakor and his ability to shut units down for a turn.

Geir has made some interesting choices in support units to set his list apart – he has a rarely-seen unit in the Chaos Lord with Daemonic Mount as a dedicated objective snatcher (thanks to his speed and The Conqueror’s Crown letting him bully 1- and 2-Wound models off objectives) and a unit of Unmade, which project an aura preventing Redeploy and making sure the Varanguard’s devastating charges have a higher chance of hitting home.

All in all, this list clearly plays to the strengths of the Slaves to Darkness force, while featuring some interesting tech that make it quite an interesting read.

Mo’s Fangs of Sotek here went all the way, beating some TOUGH lists en route, most notably KO, OBR and – what should be a really hard counter – Khorne.

Again, it’s the new dooble-forg archetype which drops the trog, since Arcane Vessel was nerfed, for…other stuff. In this case, mo Brings 5 Raptadons who can be sped up to super speed with the Speed of Huanchi spell on the Starseer, and in general are just a great trading piece, especially if they’re able to engage near an objective for the extra damage.

An Ark of Sotek is also a fantastic pick for Starborne, as it can be teleported onto an objective where it can sit, being hard to shift, until the star power and Kroak can rev up.

Interestingly, we see three endless spells: the maelstrom is quickly becoming a fan favourite due to how quickly Seraphon can power it up and send it off to explode – possible THROUGH the Spell Portal in this instance? And if not, it’s a cheap way to project at least one of Kroak’s MW spells. And Cogs, despite losing the casting re-roll, remains an excellent pick for Seraphon due to the extra ‘free’ cast, which still contributes to star points.

Big congrats to Mo on the challenging path to 5-0

Jeremy Veysseire: Hello fellow Whiskey & Sky Duardins, this is your Duardrazhal speaking, Jeremy Veysseire, about two fellow Duardin privateers who recently descended onto the field at the London Open 2023.

We will start with 2nd place finisher Joshua Jenkins, who stuck to an age-old tactic of the Kharandron, being a 1-drop army. It is still very strong, as we will explain later in his commentary. Joshua finished 2nd, while fellow privateer Philip Springall finished 3rd at the same event.

As you can guess it KO fans, Joshua is a Barak-Zilfin man and he went with the tried and true 2D6” Run, +1 to Wound versus 1 enemy unit for the game and a 2 Command Abilities on 1 friendly boat that phase. His army can be described as: “I have all of these Thunderers laying around and I am down a Soulscream Bridge this GHB”.

Joshua’s army is quite balanced in his selection and could ever be called a Highlander build. His primary display of force is in the 15 Thunderers riding into his Ironclad with the Arkanaut Admiral and Aetherkhemist providing them Speed, excellent firepower and efficient CP consumption through the Admiral being able to CP the Ironclad for free once per turn and the Thunderers as well. He has back-up shooting and melee threat in the form of the frigate, and 6 endrinriggers with Navigator for some recursion in the form of boat healing.

The biggest utility options available to him is his ability to disengage and skyhigh a boat if he chooses to in a phase, or being able to sky high and combat disembark from the Ironclad for maximum punch in a turn (for Khemist and Admiral rend). He also is 50 points down allowing him most games to have a free +1 to wound for any of his units for 1 phase (we all know it’s for the Thunderers’ second round of shooting after they Ssttled DAT GRUDGE!).

His first-round opponent was Obaid Bin-Nasir with his 2-drop Legion of Blood Nagash, VLoZD and zombies/skeleton spam on Power Flux. A 4-objective mission in which the bottom player gets to choose which pair of objectives is scoreable while Andtorian Locus can score a bonus point by scoring an active objective while also gaining a bonus point that turn if you killed any Wizard. Looking at this match up, Joshua has prio going into game turn 1 easily picking bottom of the turn so he can freely choose which objectives to activate while being out of harm’s way and forcing his opponent to face a potential double, picking Nagash for his Grudge and saving his +1 to wound for the VLoZD. While the LoB player can get no bonus points from Joshua, Joshua can get 2 and basically auto win his Grand strat by killing Nagash and VLoZD. I imagine that Nagash died on turn 2 with the VLoZD being unable to impact the game and dying the following turn. Clearly a win for Joshua.

His second-round opponent was Daniil Osudin with a 5-drop Hallowheart list that can be described as a wizard ecliptic personality including Bundo your favorite maritime Miyazaki character… oh wait that’s Ponyo. Your favorite mercenary Whale catching Mega gargant. They were playing on Nexus Collapse, a mission with 6 spread out objective, which is a mission that should not be too problematic with KO’s speed and ability to clear objectives unless of course he got railroaded by 10 Evocators that rode on a dead dude boat aka Lauchon. While not having any details on the game’s event, I can only imagine that he focused on killing Bundo turn 1 and had his Ironclad and most of the Thunderers into the Evocators. Rough times were had for the pirates of the sky as they thought Bundo was the Rum carrying caddy as they take a loss.

His third-round opponent was the experienced Max Soule with a 9 (HOLY) drop Disciples of Tzeentch list that is looking to generate Fate Dice and blow you up with some shooting and a reserve, fast melee unit in the shape of Enlightened on Disk on The Frigid Zephyr. A 3 center objective mission which should punish KO as turn 1 limit Line of Sight to only 12” while removing Fly from everything (and can continue in later turn) but sadly it also limits the reach of the Disk turn 1 if they can’t fly while the range limitation punishes Tzeentch more than teleporting KO. Overall, I can only assume that Joshua was able to remove the important threats to his army effectively early and able to remove his opponent’s ability to score in the second half. Another win for KO!

His fourth-round opponent was Krzysztof Zylawy with an 8 (HOLY) drop Blades of Khrone list that is heavy in Bloodthirster and Bloodletters on Towers in the Tundra. A thematic 2 objective mission in which you gain bonus points by controlling 1 of your opponent’s terrain features, super advantageous for a teleporting fast army like KO. Sadly, Krzysztof brought just about the same amount of death dealing flyers that weren’t loaded with a lot of Buzzsaws and aetherbullets. I can imagine that Krzysztof was unable to deliver his Bloodthirster effectively while Joshua had prime pickings of targets. I assumed he settled the grudge on the 20 Bloodletters to make sure they died ASAP removing a lot of scoring power from the list while just picking apart the poor Bloodthirsters in later turns. Another KO win.

His final opponent is our next KO player, Philip on this article, I will cover that game last!

Jeremy Veysseire: Philip Springall’s KO list is what happens when you collected way too many start collecting boxes. His two-drop army is a Barak-Urbaz fleet, and I do mean FLEET as it consists of 2 Frigates, 4 Gunhaulers, 6 endrinriggers, an Admiral, a Navigator and Brokk who seems to have lost his way to his Skyport and is just borrowing Barak Urbaz’s own fleet.

For those who don’t know where the Battleline units are, they are the Gunhaulers as they are Battleline for Barak Urbaz. He also gains 2 Artycles in which he chose +2” to move to all his many boats, +1 to wound against 1 enemy unit for the game, reroll 1 hit roll per shooting phase and a once per game 3d6” charge. The artycles make a lot of sense with 4 Drill Cannons in the Gunhaulers as any unmodified hit of 5 or 6 results is a flat 3 MW, thus the reroll gets most of its value there. The 3D6 Charge is to enable his ability to bring his Admiral, Brokk and 6 Endrinrigger from 1 Frigate into what he needs consistently. Man, Philip was so confident that he didn’t even take a Command Trait in his army. Ballsy. I would say that this list takes the A in creativity, uniqueness and AIRBORNE.

His first-round opponent was Toby Resnick with an 11-drop Jawz of Mork with a TON, literal metric TON of Squigs on Power Flux. A 4-objective mission in which the bottom player gets to choose which pair of objectives are scoreable, while Andtorian Locus can score a bonus point by scoring an active objective. You also gain a bonus point that turn if you killed any wizards. While Toby had 1 Andtorian Locus, I doubt he had much choice into which objectives he got to pick to activate. No matter how many models you are, if you can’t score points. Impressive Ballsy Springall as he takes a win for this round against a match up, I feel many KO players don’t necessarily want.

His second-round opponent was Mo Ashraf (the event winner) with a 4-drop Fangs of Sotek that spells “Kroak/Skink is back baby!” on Nexus Collapse, a mission with 6 spread out objectives. Sadly, while I do not have any details on the game, it looks like Philip took a loss in that mission. I would surmise that Mo rolled more MW than the Drill Cannons and got to bring on a lot more points to score in the second half of the game than Philip. A loss to KO.

His third-round opponent was William Matthews with a 5-drop Skaven list with dual Verminlord and a lot of Gutterrunner/Clanrats with 1 Hellpit on The Frigid Zephyr. A 3 center objective mission that I feel once again should be a KO problematic map. But Ballsy Springall managed to “blow” out this rodent’s nest with a 20-0. I can surmise that the Skaven bodies were dropping too fast to retain board presence while the KO turn up “Blasting to Smithereens” to a new level. This is probably a story of how KO Battle Tactics are superior to Skaven Battle Tactics as well.

His fourth-round opponent was George Seymour with a 1-drop OBR army that is “Peak Dad Energy” as I like to call it. A limited set of models that want to police the meta between 2+ ignore spells and -1 to hit and wound against shooting aura. It’s all about reminding these young bucks who the real Bone Daddy is. Sadly, they were playing on Towers in the Tundra which can really punish a slower aura focused army such as OBR as their ability to spread and push board pressure without sacrificing units is limited. Additionally, Ballsy Springall has a high potential of MW out that really apply pressure to the Immortis Guard tankyness. If at any point the General is targetable and dies, the firepower of the army really turns up. Another impressive win for our favorite Command Traitless Admiral.

His final opponent, the match du jour, the battle to resolve who is the penultimate Privateer at the London GT, between Joshua and Philip. It can be surmised as the following as the mission probably did not matter. Joshua shot first. FIN

Codrin: Daniil Osudin’s Hallowheart list is an interesting one as it doesn’t follow the castle build but instead it puts accent on mobile pieces, giving the army the possibility for a more adaptable playstyle.

The Kraken Eater mercenary is the anvil of the army on which using the Warding Brand spell is very efficient. Having a 35 wounds monster locking in battle enemy units that will not want to stay in combat with him because of the reflected mortal wounds, is a great way to shape the battlefield.

The other and probably most important unit of the list, are the evocators. These stormcasts count as a wizard if there’s at least two models in the unit, and if we pair them with the hoarfrost spell for extra rend, give them plus 1 to wound from their warscroll spell or Ignite Weapons from another wizard, and embark them onto Lauchon the Soulseeker we are getting a very fast and deadly unit.
Their stats would presume 41 attacks, potentially hitting on 2+ wounding on 2’s and with rend 2 or 3. After they finish their attacks they immediately roll 20 dice and each 4+ is a mortal wound.

The list is surely taking advantage of the primal magic dice adding them to the advantages that Hallowheart already has in casting magic. And speaking of which the Battlemage on Griffon is yet another key piece that will take wounds to buff casting rolls and provide with its big footprint a generous aura of enemy spell ignors on a 4+. This is also a Ghur mage and can cast Wildform, giving a +2 to charges on either the Kraken Eater or the Evocators.

The Lord Arcanum is a nice to have, but in this list his value increases because he becomes a double cast wizard. He is loaded with Hoarfrost and the scary Merciless Blizzard spells, and given all the pluses to cast this list has the reliability is very big on getting them off.

To sum it up, we have a big anvil, a lightning fast deadly hammer and a lot of mobile pieces that buff and and dish out mortal wounds, what’s not to love at this list!?

Joshua Bennett: Greetings readers, have you ever seen the movie 300? If you have, you know the famous scene where the Persian tells Leonidas that their arrows will block out the sun. Well, if you play against this list, you will fully understand what that statement means.

With 88 blissbarb archers, it sends a total of 160 shots your way. Teamed up with pretenders, it allows three of those units to auto run 6 inches, and since the warscroll allows you to run and shoot, you are looking at a 30-inch threat range for them. Also, they are allowed to all out attack three of those units. So 120 of those shots hitting on 2s and wounding on 3. Which makes them a very reliable source of damage. At rend 1 people almost shrug them off but teamed up with the blissbarb seekers they become rend two and pick up most of anything that they are shooting at.

Oh Be’lakor, this guy does great in mitigating some of the bad matchups by shutting down the units that cause problems. Also, him being a 4 plus save, he can help tank some of the high rend units that might put unwanted pressure on the list. Lord of pain is used to ensure that last unit of blissbarbs and also hitting on twos or negating any negatives to hit and wound. The common trait strength of Godhood also allows him to handle his own in combat. The Crown of Dark Secrets takes an enemy hammer unit and cripples its ability to deal damage by reducing the number of attacks to one. I need to say that again, not reduced by one, reduced to one.

If you think I have to hit this list super hard super fast, I would urge you to really think about how you’re going to do this. Charging into this list is very dangerous due to the fact that pretenders can unleash hell three times. That’s a potential 120 shots into a hammer or 40 shots three times over to three different units. Makes charging this list a little tricky.

Look, this is an amazing list and very similar to the list I personally run. But if you are looking to play something like this, be prepared to have no friends. (i’m just kidding) If you’re playing against this list and it’s bright in the area you are playing, fear not for soon the arrows will black out the sky.

Roland Rivera: Thomas Oliver’s list is a spicy one indeed. While it includes the common elements to most successful Nurgle lists in Bloab and Orghotts as quality Hero Monsters, the Lord of Afflictions as a hard-to-kill disruption piece, and Pusgoyle Blightlords as durable fast-moving frontliners, it is complementing them with some interesting choices in a Sloppity Bilepiper, some Plaguebearers, a reinforced unit of Rotmire Creed, and some Corvus Cabal.

The combination of Sloppity and Plaguebearers is intended to hold opponents in place by engaging enemy units (or forcing them to engage you) in situations where they will find it difficult to bring their full force to bear against the Plaguebearer unit, then using the Sloppity’s ability to disable pile-ins to prevent repositioning. This combination is often seen in Daemon-centric lists, but Mortal-centric lists rarely reach for it, making its inclusion here very interesting.

Units of Rotmire Creed in Blessed Sons Nurgle lists are quite common, but they are usually minimum-sized units whose purpose is to fulfill Battleline requirements cheaply while providing you with shooty screens for your Hero Monsters. This reinforced unit is likely intended to be a dedicated objective sitter that can soften opposing units up with its shooting and potentially put an Unleash Hell or two out there.

Lastly, the Corvus seem to be here in order to provide the same deepstriking nuisance function Nurglings typically serve at enough of a points discount to not make the list go over. Overall, a very interesting list with a solid result to back up its viability.

Today, we have the great Mark Nodge with Kharadron Overlords list who decided to choose violence. And guns, lots of guns… To hell with it, all the guns. In a trial run of the list, he is taking the Age of Sigmar World Teams Tournament representing Team Australia in early June. He blasted his way through SAGT like Michael Bay blasts through a blockbuster movie.

This list features Grundstock Thunderers, thirty-five Grundstock Thunderers, all packing special weapons for that extra sauce. Thunderers have been the go-to unit for Kharadron devastation of late, and this list skews about as hard into them as possible. The upgrades to their range and consistency with the new Battletome combined with the rend buff from the Khemist makes them deadly at eighteen inches and devastating at twelve. Furthermore, they have the ability for them to give a minus one to hit if they fail to kill something, or unleash hell, from suppressing fire, and finally if someone does tag them in combat if they survive, they get to dump up to 3d6 mortal wounds on their attacker.
The biggest issue with the unit overall is its slow speed, which Mark has offset with multiple ways of getting them where they need to be. First off, we have the traditional Ironclad, which is an excellent shooting platform in its own right. The ability teleport, and once per game, dump its cargo, making it the precision piece of this equation. Next up, we have a Soulscream bridge in a spell in a bottle attached to a Khemist. This is a unique endless spell that has two massive bases that must be set up within twenty-four inches of the caster, then at the start of the movement phase, a single unit wholly within six inches may teleport. Even though this can only be cast once per game and is easy to dispel, the utility beyond the teleport itself is amazing. The bases are massive, so you can use them to screen pieces or even lane blockers against armies like Gargants.

Lastly, we have a Gunhauler with a very cheeky “Coalbeards Collapsable Compartments” Endrinwork. This rarely seen contraption gives the Gunhauler the Transport Vessel keyword and a six-man capacity. This is perfect for the unit of five Thunderers to roam around in, and when combined with the Gunhaulers unparalleled movement in the army it can go camp out on an objective while still presenting enough of a threat that chaff units cannot easily shift them off.

Overall, this is an outstanding skew list that presents multiple tough units that are a must kill with just enough support redundancy to keep it all afloat. It should dominate the horde based undead that are currently running rampant, such as Soulblight Gravelords and Ossiarch Bonereapers. It might have some difficulty with armies like Beasts of Chaos and Slannesh, who can pressure the heroes outside of combat. I look forward to seeing how Mark does with it at Worlds.

Kieren Coates: The list was inspired by IronBlaze – a mad man who has been running doomwheels competitive rain hail or shine.

It’s designed to be a castle buster with still a strong core to finish out the game

Thanquol and verminlord make the base of the list, with thanquol being the key piece into magic dom and horde lists, and the verminlord being the primary physical damage output – if these two pieces are protected over 5 turns they can lift almost any army

Surrounding them to keep them safe is 3 sets of 20 clanrats acting as barriers and forcing the enemy to trade high value units into them, only to have them countered off and the lines rebuilt

For long-range damage, we have two grey seers who can be skitterleaped up the board to drop endless spells before taking gnawholes back.

Further to this, the doomwheels (or better known Zoomwheels) can have their movement doubled by the engineer, combined with 2 sources of death frenzy, levitate and MMWP they become a killing machine with an average movement of 28 inches.

Lob those doomwheels over the top to kill off key pieces that could threaten the life of the warbringer and thanquol, then keep them protected as they lift 2 units per turn and repeat for 5 turns to win the game.

The list is surprisingly concentrated with low health, so it’s best not to get too greedy and take it slow, killing 1-2 units per turn, but staying protected from the enemy counter is a must

At first glance, this list looks typical for Bloodtoofs, Ironjawz with a Mawcrusha, Megaboss, and 18 Gore gruntas. But there is a little more depth to it. Kyle has tried to address the dismal output of Gore gruntas (Jagged Gore-hackas are 1 damage weapons) with Bash ’em lads and Killa beat. The Mawcrusha has Arcane Tome with Bash ’em ladz and Touched by the Waagh, pick a unit with 6″ and cause D3 wounds to them, the caster gets the number of wounds added to their casting roll. Now, the 8 is at least a 7 and more often than not a 6 casting roll. It grants +1 to wound rolls. Killa Beat (not often seen either) grants +1 to hit. With so many units spreading, the buffs will help, especially with Skull Shaking Bellow, to apply 3 commands for the cost of one (all out attack, for instance). 4 units can have +1 to attack.

The other benefit is that the 3 model units are much easier to move and pile in. It can make a difference to both mortals on the charge and just getting your attacks into the right unit. Shot off the board once by Kharadron it was otherwise an effective approach. The whole list is mobil (except the Warchanters) and can get up in your grill quickly. If the dice are hot, they are a real menance still, especially when you can buff the Jagged Gore-hackas.

Roland Rivera: Here, we have a spicy Nurgle list that successfully executed the submarine (lose Round 1, win the rest of the way to clinch the 4-1). The Befouling Host subfaction lets Nurgle focus more on summoning by letting them place 2 Feculent Gnarlmaws instead of 1 at the start of the game, thus generating more Contagion Points and hitting their summoning benchmarks a bit faster. This is important because (as we will see below), most of the combat blocks in this list are rather lacking in foot speed, and summoning will be necessary to complement your board presence.

In order to get an extra Gnarlmaw, Befouling Host demands a Daemon General, and that is where we see the rather uncommon inclusion of a Great Unclean One. While the big fella is a bit slow, he packs some utility with his chosen artefact in the Witherstave, which makes the mortal wounds from disease points go off on 3+ instead of 4+. It also provides even more summoning points via the Doomsday Bell. Last but not least, Stream of Corruption gives you a potent short-range horde clearing spell that can line up very well into armies with lots of foot troops.

Another interesting inclusion is the Lord of Blights, along with the 3 units of Putrid Blightkings. Blightkings are efficient volume attackers that are very good at chewing up weaker troops, and the Lord of Blights is a durable foot Hero (especially with Fuelled by Ghurish Rage acting as a backstop) that gives you a bit of shooting.

These interesting inclusions are rounded out with some mainstays in Bloab, Nurglings, and the Rotmire Creed. All in all, this is a very interesting list featuring some uncommon choices, but it has the result to back it up.

Well, there’s no doubt that the new Gloomspite Gitz book is better than the original, but I must admit that I’m still suprised to see Troggs smashing their way to a 5-0. Christopher didn’t have an easy route either ending on the other Destruction go-to army – Ogor Mawtribes.

The Troggs don’t have the bodies that you might expect in a Gitz list, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have sneaky tricks in abundance, and Christopher has brought along some Gobbos to help his Rockguts. The Fungoid can Hand of Gork – a great threat to his opponent – whilst Skragrott can do that, and can keep the moon where you need it to be – as well as giving a little ranged damage with his scroll spell.

Games Workshop via Wahapedia

A spell that wouldn’t be out of place in an Aelf book. Glorious stuff.

Meanwhile the Rockguts are healing in both turns, and if you can kill nine of them – 5 can come back! That’s a hell of a hammer piece appearing within 12″ of the Loonshrine near the end of game (because you’re not killing them early). It’s great to see the list do so well, and a list mostly unchanged from the Trogg lists before the new book (with the notably addition of Skragrott). Goes to to show what a few well placed warscroll re-writes can do.

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Khorne’s new book is having a rush of blood to the head and starting to post results! This here is a forerunner for a very solid competitive archetype, and here’s how it works.

The big, daemonic blob of core synergy here is the Thirster of Unfettered Fury projecting a -1 to hit aura, and taking the command trait ‘FIrebrand’ that makes him into a priest. Because of the warlord battalion, each priest in the list knows two prayers – and the Khorne scripture is SO GOOD. With him is 20 Bloodletters, who in Bloodlords, are doing MWs on 5s to hit instead of 6s. The Thirster also has the ability to give a unit a 3d6 charge – meaning this blob is suddenly annoyingly hard to kill with the Thirster parked beyond, but also capable of long-bombing and handing you a whole bunch of MWs on a bronze platter.

Skarbrand is simply another very scary beatstick that can’t be ignored, meaning the other priests – the Ritualist and Bloodmaster, whose warscroll spell can give daemons +1 to wound vs a target – are probably free to do their thing, unmolested. Factor in two key Invocations, the Bleeding Icon to turn off inspiring presence in an aura and the Hexgorgers to absolutely lock down casting – and you have a very difficult equation to solve.

There are more moving parts to this list and a whole lot of strategy and further synergy based around Blood Tithe use that is all acts as a force multiplier but would take an essay to explain – but that gives you the core idea. A nasty, ‘everything is scary’ list full of movement shenanigans and board control. A great result and a sure sign of Khorne lists to come.

Kharadron and I have a love/hate relationship, I love the concept and like to see them do well, but I don’t love their play style or look. Jame’s list is brilliant, no attempt to outdrop you – he isn’t going to deploy near you anyway. 2 x Ironclads and a Gunhauler all with Sky Cannons is no joke, 50/50 to hit at long range (but all out attack can help) with only 2 shots but D3+3 damage. And through the artycles, amendments, and footnotes, those boats have +2″ movement, +1 to wound against a unit, a reroll of a 1 and once per battle 3D6 charge. Guess which Ironclad that’s going to go on (battleram rolls for mortals with a number of dice equal to the charge roll).

On top of the boats shooting, their embarked Akanaut’s are Galletian Sharpshooters. Very difficult to use their disembarked ability to give them +1 to hit to anything contesting objectives. But there is no reason they can’t target a GC from the boat with All Out Attack after a fly high command. The Galletian Command is an unusual choice for a non combat army but a decent way of accessing the season’s Battle Tactics. It might leave you open to the Bodyguard being killed, but the Admiral could contest an objective effectively particularly late game. But wait, there’s more – this is not just a shooting army. There are a lot of moving parts and buffs. From the Navigators reading the winds to the Admiral granting rerolls to the reading the winds, drops, movements, and profiles. It’s a lot to keep track of. Essentially, though, if they shoot, they will lift most units in the game.

They would have the drop on most of the armies James faced, the loss to Ogors is interesting – Ogors do have tricks to get close and if they do they can dominate. They are hard to put down as well. Poor Fyreslayers though, slow, forced into the open and gunned down.

80 clanrats and 2 warp lightning cannons, who cares how you go, this army is going to be a laugh with lots of death. There is no special list tech here, just some really hard-hitting hammers (Thanquol, Warbringer, and even the Hellpit) with deep deep screens. Thanquol has his skateboard (Lauchon) and is built for maximum melee. He’ll hit harder than a Mawcrusher. The Warbringer will, with this build, hit as hard a Thanquol (8 x 3 damage attacks) with his melee weapons. It’s a great list for killing, but maybe not for scoring. That’s an issue for Skaven their heroes are either massive or very small (5 wounds), and season 3 battle tactics are hard work for them.

At that’s how Smash and Bash went down; 4/0/1 and finishing in 9th with a few close battles. The only one he didn’t overcome was 2nd place, Blades of Khorne. And when your army is all about trading bodies to maintain position and killing your opponent, your worst nightmare is an opponent that wants exactly that. The more you kill, the more bloodtithe, and Khorne isn’t fussy who died. Bloodthirster/Skarbrand on Thanquol is going to depend on who goes first and the dice. Brilliant to see on the tabletop. Fantastic list to see, maybe hindered by the new season, but it is still a very effective and bloody machine that will grind out wins.
