4th Edition Faction Review: Sylvaneth

Ethan gets to the root of the Sylvaneth faction and covers the elementree traits and enhancements that’ll help you decide what to take in your first games with them.

I’ll leaf now…

Introduction

Rumours of our demise have been vastly overstated! Welcome to the Sylvaneth Faction review, we’re going to try not to miss the forest for the trees but it is probably pertinent to mention up top that this index has been pretty broadly panned by community figures and its regular players. With that in mind, we’ll stay realistic here and point out where things aren’t great but this will largely focus on what Sylvaneth still can do rather than dwelling below that point.

Playstyle

Sylvaneth in 3rd edition were known for a guerrilla playstyle focused around using strike and fade to leverage high value units against single targets and then move back to safety before reprisals could occur. This relied on a combination of movement tricks and charge buffs and was heavily dice gated and reflected in the points values of sylvaneth units. Some aspects of this play pattern remain but key changes to the way the army’s battle traits function have meant that in 4th edition we’ll be a more take-and-hold faction, relying on expanding areas of control through a combination of magic and high threat range units to threaten from a castle.

Sylvaneth have excellent tools for completing battle tactics with well planned play, however we’ve lost some durability in the form of recursion since last edition meaning that, despite the lethality of the game coming down overall, you’ll have to play smart with your resources lest deforestation come for your troops.

Battle Traits

Credit: Warhammer Community

As mentioned above, key changes have occurred for the Sylvaneth battle traits, most specifically the timing of the Strike and Fade ability moving from immediately after a unit has fought to the end of the turn. Constraints including being wholly within 6” of an Awakened Wyldwood (henceforth AWW) and being in combat at the end of the turn produced mass outcry amongst the Sylvaneth player base and I can happily announce after playing some games with this that it is horribly awkward and a real pain in the ass to use, but very much useful and fine for reasons that we’ll go into shortly.

Walk the Hidden Paths is largely the same in flavour with a slew of major differences, the inclusion of the Core keyword means that sylvaneth units may not move into range of an AWW and then teleport afterwards. You start there or you don’t teleport. This is largely alleviated by the removal of the requirement that woods be placed outside of 3” of your own units, making placement a fair whack easier if you’re able to get the spell off. Additionally, the requirement that you not be in combat to use this limits some popular 3rd edition uses of the spell and means that you’ll be relying on Strike and Fade to “rescue” units tied up in combat. Endless growth is cool, extra cool when combined with rally, that’s the review, back to the fun stuff.

Spirit of Durthu by Ed

Battle Formations

I did say back to the fun stuff but the Battle Formations are a real sore point for Sylvaneth. None of the four stand out as particularly powerful and often double up on effects we can access through other means. This does make for a force multiplier in some cases but the majority of the time it leaves you wanting something a little more thematic or impactful to support the different playstyles available to the faction.

Lords of the Clan healing monsters is nice but Treelords becoming heroes, even with the battle formation allowances has made the old Oakenbrow style rather stymied. Expect Alarielle, Durthu and Friends in this subfaction.

Forest Folk is for all of the dryad lovers in the audience. Ever wanted to run 120+ dryads? This is the subfaction for you. Also, I hope you brought bandaids. Jokes aside, this feels like a miss from GW, who must have had concerns about how Kurnoth hunters would work within the subfaction and instead made something that is for no-one.

Outcasts Despite the name this doesn’t interact at all with Drycha and her spooky cohort which is thematically a bit of a miss but, on the table, makes this my personal favourite of the four options. It’s nothing huge and exciting but singular tree revs/cavalry/Kurnoth Hunters being able to contest your opponent’s monsters and knowing you’ll always win the Primary battle in a faction which cannot afford to commit multiple resources to a single objective is plainly powerful in a way which isn’t entirely intuitive until you get it on the table.

Last is Free Spirits which allows you to give run and charge to a unit of cavalry. Belthanos does this on his warscroll and if you’re not running Belthanos I’d be shocked. Sadly a bit redundant.

Spells

This is where it gets a bit spicy. Sylvaneth rely on being near AWW for ALL of their allegiance abilities. I personally have found our warscrolls to be strong enough that not having access to these all of the time is ok, but it is completely galling that we have one way in the entire army to summon Wyldwoods and it can be stopped by enemy spellcasters.

Treesong summons woods. WW 18” is a fine distance on the new maps and the ability to attempt to do this in your opponent’s turn makes it more achievable than in the past, especially with the unlimited tag. The trees themselves are pretty good, there is much maligning online that the trees can be killed, but to push back on this sentiment slightly, summoning 8-12 wounds, with a 4+ save, on a 6+ CV that your opponent then needs to chew through is not a small number of wounds over the course of the game. Opponents are forced to make meaningful choices about targeting your woods or your units and if they focus the units, abilities from various warscrolls make the units inside said woods far more powerful. Additionally, the new terrain maps make pre-planning of placement far easier. No longer the days of travelling for an event only to find that the TO was a bit overzealous with terrain and your army was unable to play, though the loss of overgrown terrain does mean that wizards are borderline mandatory in the army this edition and a great deal of your casting will be spent on making new woods.

The other two spells in the pack are relatively straightforward, providing a much appreciated rend bonus and anti-horde spell to the army. They’re fine and a nice tertiary casting option if you don’t have trees or manifestations you’d prefer to be casting.

On the note of manifestations, they Sylvaneth lore is… Ok? The Gladewyrm is a power pick that carries the manifestations while the skullroot is niche and the spiteswarm more a bonus than anything. I will say as one of the many who suffered at the hands of the spiteswarm’s 2+ in 3rd edition the fact it has been so massively tuned downward and still retains the 2+ roll is pretty jokes. Good one Jimothy Workshop.

Enhancements

Heroic Traits

All three of these are solid. Spellsinger giving a nonwizard a cast is a powerful interaction with unlimited spells allowing you another chance to create an AWW while the +1 to cast on units like the Warsong Revenant is powerful in 4th. Warsinger (Choir anyone?) gives +2” movement which, while nothing mindblowing, is always excellent. Especially so in a faction with ready access to run and charge through Belthanos.

Lastly, and my personal favourite is Radiant Spirit which provides a complete spell/prayer ignore on a 3+, something I haven’t seen as an aura effect in any other faction. It goes without saying that this effect is very powerful, being able to ignore effects like -1 to hit, wound or reducing charge dice is massive and avoiding incidental mortal wounds is pleasant icing on the cake.

Artefacts

These are far less thrilling but do a job. The Seed of rebirth is nice on small support pieces but far more impactful in monster mash where Durthu standing back up at the end of the enemy combat phase allows 3-6+ points of healing before he can be targeted again. Crown of Fell Bowers requires the hero using it to be in combat but provides a very powerful +1 to wound to all units targeting the chosen unit on a 3+. With how GW internally seems to be valuing +1 to wound effects, this artefact sits behind a number of gates which may see it struggle to be used effectively, but remains powerful nonetheless. Lastly the Greenwood Gladius. Look how they massacred my boy. From Durthu’s right hand blade in 3rd to now, the Greenwood gladius is now the much-memed “roll a d3, on a 2+ inflict that many mortals.” It isn’t bad by any means but everyone who was salivating at the thought of a buffed up Durthu biffing his way through a game must have been equally disappointed by this item’s depowering.

Units

Let’s start with the best of the best. As alluded to above, the use case for Strike and Fade has changed massively, rather than slingshotting units to delete your opponent’s units and then leaving before they can do anything about it (a playstyle which was always absolutely shithouse to play against, despite the end of edition <45% win rate, and I won’t hear otherwise), Strike and Fade now exists mainly as a means to reposition, for battle tactics at times and most commonly in my experience to rescue our new, old favourite unit Kurnoth Hunters with Kurnoth Greatbows (henceforth Bows, please.) who lack the shoot in combat keyword, have 18” range now, and have – in exchange for these limitations – learned to absolutely ruin heroes whenever they damn well please. Bows require some babysitting to make work but their combination of hero sniping, pure output and synergy with the way the Allegiance traits now work make them my highlight of the index.

Without getting exhaustive, other notable standouts are Alarielle herself, who is a powerful beatstick in addition to being our best wizard. Her resurrection ability is too inconsistent to plan around, but as a listbuilding tool she synergises incredibly well with big punchy monsters such as Durthu and Belthanos. As an aside, I’ve seen far too many times statements online that due to Alarielle’s base size, she’s unable to benefit from the Allegiance abilities. You can overlap your base with a Wyldwood so long as you’re not trying to place the base on the trunk of the tree. Jesus Christ people.

My last major highlights are my personal favourites, with Belthanos playing a key role in most lists. An amazing model, and great beatstick who, despite losing his ward, still plays a key role in the army by creating an AWW from a terrain piece which cannot be destroyed. Clutch. The Lady of Vines also got a glow-up for 4th edition, with a far punchier combat profile and a better rampage which either debuffs attackers with -1 to hit or allows all sylvaneth +1 to hit a certain target. She has paid for this however in becoming a monster in a ruleset where Look Out Sir! no longer cares about wound counts and simultaneously losing wounds, leaving her at a very fragile 8 wounds, very difficult to keep alive outside of woods against popular options like Jezzails and Longstrike Crossbows. That aside, her ability to count as a Wyldwood, Ward aura and otherwise well rounded profile make her one of my favourite picks in the new edition.

– 8 x The Twistweald (130)
– 10 x Gossamid Archers (240)

1980/2000

Thanks to our patron A..k who suggested this list.

You can get your Spite-Revenants or Twistweald up to rend 4. The focus of the list is turning these crappy, cheap units into potential hard hitters.
Twistweald have really decent damage for their points and you can potentially triple stack their negative charge effect.

20 Dryads to be a pain to shift with 5++, 5 casts, Drycha is a strong force multiplier for the Twistweald and Spites,

The Gossamids are for hero sniping and screening, but can also get all the buffs onto them shoot, and then charge, for a respectable 14 damage into a 4+ save average.

You’ve also got a decent amount of shooting across this list

A…K: A very interesting list from Jordan that makes great use of Belthanos’ force multiplying capabilities by going down the multi-hammer archetype. Durthu and belthanos are an excellent tag team, 11″ of movement + charge on a high damage platform like durthu is nothing to sniff at. The list also sports Drycha, who’s impressively self-sufficient and perfectly capable of bullying smaller units/sniping characters with her deadly ranged flitterflies. She is also able to remain self-sufficient with Regrowth and the threat of a deadly unleash hell.

The warsong rev general, fresh off its points cut, provides one of the best savant bids out there whilst opening up the board with Verdant blessings and spiteswarm hive charges all from the safety of your deployment zone.

Finally, and most intriguingly, the Namarti Reaver allies are a wonderful little tech piece. Sylvaneth often struggle to reliably deal damage with large portions of their army with the focus on strike and fading key pieces. The namarti are able to alleviate some of this burden by opening up additional avenues of consistent damage at up to 26″ range, helping to strip screens, provide chip damabe and bait All out defence in conjunction with Drycha’s shooting. They are a steal at just 320 points for the lot while not relying on an arch revenant in the same way that Kurnoth bows in a similar role might.
The list also wields 45 ablative wounds spread across 5 units, which grants it an uncharacteristic level of board presence for a Sylvaneth army.

Jake: This is a list that I’ve played frankly too many times at this point, and was designed to strike the right balance between objective control and power projection. With half my reinforcement points in Serfs and half in Knights, the core gameplay pattern is fairly simple: sit behind a massive wall of Serfs to score primary; jump over said wall with flying Knights to counterpunch and do battle tactics. Get charged and then charge – peak Warhammer!

Of course, this is aided by the extreme efficiency of the Royal Beastflayer blocks, who have outgrown their utility role of only suppressing Monsters and are pound-for-pound the best tarpit in the book. Their interaction with Chalice of Ushoran and the Archregent’s Countless Servants (as a unit with multi-wound models that nonetheless count as 1 wound) offers them eye-watering recursion potential. Many lists simply don’t have the raw damage required to cleanly remove them, and it’s always a tragedy when that happens – the five or so remaining models quickly balloon back to their full 20, choking out the objectives. There are plenty of tricks you can do with Beastflayers due to their unique footprint and the fact that all the damage comes from 6 models, so I find they are a joy to play with on the table.

I’ve opted to use a 6-block of Morbheg knights as my primary damage delivery system, as they are fairly buff agnostic, fast, and offer a source of mortals. Previous versions of the list used a second block of Morbhegs, but I have made the call to switch them for Flayers. This decision has aged well: Flayers open up a bespoke battle tactic, make numerous other battle tactics easier, allow you to move your Feeding Frenzy aura far upfield, and do significant damage in shooting, often drawing out a crucial All-Out Defense. I round out my list with two copies of the best Abhorrant and the best Courtier, respectively. Because my recursion is mostly passive or from the chalice, I am freed up to skip Cruel Taskmaster and make an Abhorrant my General, securing access to the very reliable Spellcasting Savant.

Kieron Bailey: A good 4-1 outcome with a variation on what a lot of Tzeentch lists are turning to (including mine!) which is buffing spells with a combat threat to back it up. Most chosen spells are focused on buffing your own units so it totally cuts out any spell ignores from Khorne or Null Myriad. In addition, with Cult Demagogue, the Curseling can auto-cast any of its spells using a pair of Destiny Dice that have the same number and it cannot be unbound. This can guarantee a Blizzard goes off or a Shield of Fate to make the Enlightened Hammer piece a bit more survivable. Usually this might only happen once a game, but with the Eternal Shroud potentially regenerating Destiny Dice, it might be a few times across the game that this trick can be pulled off.

While potentially being able to generate 9 Fate Points to summon a Lord of Change in their first hero phase, it’s probably easier to go for Magical Dominance with the Curseling as with 9 Destiny Dice, you’ll have a couple of doubles. Then turn 2 is when Big Bird appears followed by one or two other Tzeentch battle tactics and then a nice, straightforward Intimidate the Invaders with the Grand Strategy as the icing on the cake.

What the Tzeentch player needs is time for all of this to come together and the Pink Horrors partly do this (though 50 wounds on a mostly 6+ save isn’t as good as it was at the start of 3rd) but Belakor is the trump card here, allowing a key unit to be shut down for one or maybe two turns, possibly preventing a battle tactic and presenting chaos with the victory.

Kieren Coates: Ridge has come through with a real mixed bag of skaven, focused on lots of bodies across the board and playing for points.

Starting off with the first choice is shaman of the chilled lands on the grey seer, enabling spellcasting savant as the grand strategy to score it if the grey seer is alive. With a 3+ bodyguard on the seer, -1 to be hit at range and melle next to clanrats, and the ability to scurry away this little caster is harder to kill than his warscroll may suggest.

However, it’s not a simple option, as with 8 rat ogors in the list, the loss of consistency from Hordemaster on the Master Moulder is sorely missed, however Ridge has opted for the stronger grand strategy which is respectable in a control style list.

With 8 rat ogors, 10 censors, a hell pit, skreech and jaws it has enough damage to clear most lists which dont respect its output, while having plenty of wounds and recursion to clog up the board for a long fight.

Well done on the 4-1!

Sylvaneth Faction Breakdown – December 2023

SUBFACTIONS

Overall, Heartwood appears to be the most successful subfaction at GTs with a win rate of 47%, however this is only marginally better than Oakenrow and Gnarlroot. At the RTT setting, Winterleaf appears to be having the stronger run with 72% (but with only 10 results), followed by Heartwood on 67%.

Heartwood proves to be the most popular subfaction.

Here we can see that Heartwood are the faction with the highest percentage of players who achieve 4+ wins in a GT setting, but Harvestboon have the highest positive win ratio (amber and green combined).

Disregarding Harvestboon and Winterleaf who have negligible data, Gnarlroot have the highest % of players going to an RTT and achieving a positive result.

This chart can show a lack of balance via results, if all factions were perfectly balanced (along with player skills) then the opposing bars (i.e. 5-0 and 0-5, 3-2 and 2-3) would be even.

FACTION MATCHUPS

Note that these stats are across all game formats.

Quite a number of negative matchups for Sylvaneth (Orange and Red), with only four factions that Sylvaneth perform well against.

ROUND PERFORMANCE

WARSCROLL PERFORMANCE

This chart shows the win rates of lists which include the warscroll (in Blue) compared to those that don’t (in Orange). It also shows their appearances in lists in grey.

Brett Martin: Tom played a fantastic series of games to take the overall win with Stormcast, the first win in a larger GT in quite a while. It’s a very technical army helped by the new tactics, which give Stormcast more of a fighting chance. Heavy ranged mortals that can’t be dispelled from the Knight-Vexillors aren’t a meme – they can weaken a key unit or remove an important buff piece easily.

Vanguard Hunters provide scoring and mobility and the army still have the typical Translocation (on a 3+ for an element of risk). The Knight Zephyros adds more mobility and all up there are 3 dispells and Adtorian Acloytes because it has the Arcane Tome. That’s good coverage into magic armies but the army still isn’t reliant of casting. There are still plenty of threat pieces, Fulminators dropping and charging, Tempestors are strong. Vanguard-Raptors dropping near the Knight Relictor. All staples of Stormcast and still good.

Eschewing the normal minimal drops for a Warlord is a solid move, having 2 Holy Command’s is a reflection of the Stormcast Artefacts and Spells. But in this case gaining double shoot on the Raptors and returning the Liberators adds a lot of flexibilty. That’s this lists stregth, it forces a heavy commitment to remove any one piece but losing one of the hammers won’t cripple the army.

Danny Wadeson: Sylvaneth have been struggling to podium in recent months, with most more recent results coming from pairing Belthanos and Alarielle. Here we have Alarielle on her own – still a capable multi-phase goddess with tonnes of utility. She’s supported by a much heavier shooting base of 6 and 3 bow-noth than usual, relying purely on 2×5 Tree revs for objective capping – and I’m guessing Alarielle was summoning in 3 Sword-noth for some extra melee bodyguards/objective bullies .

And it performed fantastically, losing only to the sheer ranged output of KO, which is hard for any army to deal with. Gratz to Chris for an unusual list that fills the sky with arrows while Queen big-bug runs rampant – sounds like fun.

CORE BATTALIONS:

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Roland Rivera: It’s no secret that Slaves to Darkness players rely heavily on Varanguard because of their package of speed, durability, power, and consistency, but this list goes a step further than most and runs 3(!) blobs of 6 VG, one of which contains the General because a 5+ Rally on that kind of beef is a valuable resource indeed.

As you would expect from an army that spends over 80% of its points on 3 potent hammers, the strategy here is highly straightforward; move fast, hit hard, don’t give your opponent much of an opportunity to hit you back. Untamed Beasts give you access to a screen/objective grabber, and the Sorcerer Lords keep you topped up with buffs.

While the strategy of the list is straightforward, and the gameplan can get a bit dicey if your forward rampage gets slowed down, doing so is easier said than done. You need only look to the list’s record for evidence of that.

Bean: When 12 Varanguard just isn’t enough (and frankly, I agree), one is left with a touch choice. Do you look through your tome, hoping to find a spark, something that ignites your list into something more? Maybe some screens, some deep strike, perhaps some utility? Nah, fuck that. Just slap 6 more Varanguard in there and offer your opponent a moment to pray before the game begins. An absolute baller list going 4-1 at the Blood Rite GT, it has everything you need to crush your opponent into truly fearing Archaons legions of scawy horsemen.

Starting off with a Nurgle marked unit of Varanguard as the General, they are -1 to wound in melee (Nurgle mark) and give the Varanguard a 5 up rally (when the command is issued by this unit). Coupled with Ensorcelled Weapons and most likely the hoarfrost from the Chaos Sorcerer Lord giving them 2-3 rend, that’s 30 attacks, 3/3’s, at potentially 3 rend. Absolutely horrific scenes.

Backing them up is 12 more Varanguard, Khorne marked for +1 attack on the charge, and armed with Fellspears for +1 to rend and +1 to wound on the charge. If in doubt, just remember your ABC’s with these guys (always be charging) and you’re golden. 2 Sorcerer lords for some utility, offering a cheeky 6 up ward (on top of the Varanguards already built in 4 up mortal ward) as well as a blizzard threat, some untamed beasts for a sneaky pregame move, dead on 2k points, what more could you want? A deadly list that I personally love, congrats on the 4-1!

Also, did I mention the Varanguard can run and charge? Yeah. Try and run. We dare you.

Roland Rivera: I have long felt that The Goretide was one of the more under-appreciated Khorne subfactions, and the results are starting to back up that feeling, as it has made a few podiums of late. This list has some fun inclusion in Korghos Khul himself, a reinforced unit of Blood Warriors (a rarity in this post-Galletian Veterans world, as they only have 1″ reach), and perhaps the spiciest choice of hammer in 2 reinforced units of Wrathmongers (!).

While it may be odd to see what is generally considered to be a support unit in the hammer role like this, a quick peek at their profile shows there is some merit to the choice. 4 attack per model at 3+/3+/-1/1 base is no joke when combined with Khorne’s plethora of buffs (as an example, this list can provide +1 to hit and +1 Rend with relative ease). While they unfortunately do not get to benefit from each other’s +1 Attacks buff, they are cheap in the points department, and Rally well when combined with the Bloodsecrator.

Last but not least, this list also has a couple of interesting Ally picks in Untamed Beasts and Furies. Both of them make their way up the board quickly, and Furies in particular can force the opponent’s hand in activation order if they want to be rid of them. The innovation potential in Khorne seemingly knows no bounds, and here is yet another example of it.
