Battleforce boxes are back after their successes since 2020. These are a fantastic way to get into a new army or even add to an existing one, but what’s inside them and what is the saving?
Prices in 2024 were around £150 each so with the October price rise, I expect these to be £160 each (update! £155 each). In the meantime I thought our readers would like to know the value of the toys… so see below against each box:
Battleforce Boxset
Cost
RRP
Skaven – Skryre Warpswarm
£231.00
£160.00 (Est)
Soulblight Gravelords – Lances of the Crimson Keep
£245.00
£160.00 (Est)
Gloomspite Gitz – Dankhold Rampage
£229.50
£160.00 (Est)
Slyvaneth – Outcast Spitegrove
£231.50
£160.00 (Est)
There’s good consistent value in each box, with Vordhai pusing the Soulblight Gravelords to the top of the pack. In fact Age of Sigmar is consistently better value than the 40k Battleforces based on RRP.
There’s a lot of big characters in here (except the Skaven), suggesting the boxes are aimed more at the ‘new army’ crowd… that said the Skaven one looks like a great expansion for Skaventide released last year.
It is a surprise to see no Stormcast here either, given they were in the box in 2024, but they have done one box per Grand Alliance so I guess that’s fair!
These are best ordered from your FLGS especially if they can get them in, and make a few pounds, dollars, euros from them in the expensive Christmas period.
Alternatively, if you regularly use Element Games, you can pick them up there… using our affiliate link (for which we receive a small contribution to the site)
So what do you get inside and how much would it cost you normally?

Kieren Coates: Now this is my own list so i can provide a bit more insight into this one!
However, variants of this list have been floating around for some time, especially since it ran second place at the GW open in Atlanta – however I was personally destroyed by one of the OG’s of bells in the current meta, Stuart the iron gutsman in a skaven mirror months prior.
With the list facing a 120 point nerf in the recent battlescroll, changes were needed to be made and the most optimal change was reducing one bell down to a seer, but honestly… i think its better
By taking a seer instead, it gives access to both blizzard and hoarfrost which are incredibly pivotal spells, with hoarfrost greatly assisting in two of my wins (Big Waaagh and gargants), and now with the new wizard finders having a 3rd small hero means you have access to warlord, and then using the priest to provide wizard finders to the 30 censors for that critical 5+ spell block.
The concept of the list is simple – with 6 masterclan/pestilence heroes unless the enemy fights you, you have your grand strategy by default. Combined with simple tactics you can very easily score 28 points.
Now, that means if the enemy can do the same, it comes down to who can control the primaries for those critical turns – not only does this list have the bodies to outmuscle most lists, but skabbick’s prayer to automatically take an objective if his squad is on it is brutal in control matchups, game changingly so in some cases.
Sit in the most optimal zone of the board, force the enemy to have to take the risk into you, and if they are unable to piece through the screaming bells, furnaces and clanrats then expect them to be cleared by the powerhouse that is 2×15 censors.
on the charge with prayer, all out attack and skabbicks pack within 18″ its 75 attacks, 2’s, 2’s, rend 1 damage 2
For context thats 70 damage into a 4+ save enemy – thats without adding in hoarfrost, skavenbrew, or death frenzy to further fight again when your models die
Be aware however the list isnt without weakness – if your PCB’s die early by not protecting them, or they are shot down from a distance you will be left with all bodies and no teeth. Against ranged lists you must use smart positioning, soulscream bridge and gnawholes to close the gap and get into threat range while controlling the board with the remaining bodies
While the list has been nerfed by 120 points, it still certainly has its punch and can beat down on most melle armies, but be afraid of the ranged powerhouses that can take out your hammers before they get a chance to engage.

Peter: I’ve been lucky enough to know the PlasticCraic team for a while now. So when Joel popped up in the listing, we decided to do something a little different for his list review!
Peter: Thanks for agreeing to do this! We don’t often see Sons topping the tables of events these days. What is it that separates your list from other Sons lists that gave you that little extra zing?
Joel: Funnily enough, the list i took seems to be ‘the’ brodds stomp list getting around at the moment, and I’d be wrong to take the credit for coming up with it. It does play vastly different to a regular sons list. Their biggest flaw was ironically survivability. Megas have been used as the yard stick for damage output since they were released, and in brodds stomp you kind of fix that flaw by getting a 5+ ward on brodds 40 wounds. The extra zing would have to be the kings stomp, which is the brodds stomp specific monstrous action. I used this pretty aggressively to tie up units and snipe out heroes. Throwing terrain is cool and all, but this one takes the cake for me.
Peter: Your only loss came to Kieren and his ratties. Was this just a weight of numbers issue that caused the issue for your megas? Not discounting that Kieren is probably the top Skaven player.
Joel: Kieren had a dream turn 1, applying every buff to 15 plague sensor bearers, including a -3 rend hoarfrost. I didn’t zone out the bridge properly, and he got into my guts, wiping out the warstomper and a mancrusher with a 12″ charge. Safe to say, the 20 attacks a model (sarcasm) comfortably lifted them with ease. Skaven can be a really tough matchup for sons, between the debuffs from the bells and weight of dice from stupidly cheap 2 wound rats. Full credit to Kieren, though. VICGT was his first 5-0, and he deserved the win. I doubt I’m the only one to say that I’m glad to see the back of PCBs leading into 4th!
Peter: So are there any changes you’d make to the lost following VICGT? Or are you looking to have fun with it all for the lame duck period?
Joel: There’s a good chance I’ll be playing sons again for fatal4play, which is a 4-player teams event in June. And after VICGT, I’ll most likely swap out the gatebreaker for a krakeneater. Hitting on 4+s really sucks, and I used the pulverising strike ability more than I’d like to admit. The krakeneater adds some objective kicking, which is always handy, especially when in brodds you dont want to spread out too much and lose the 5+ ward. Krakens do less damage, but atleast they hit on 3+s base and are another good choice to hurl terrain with as you get more milage out of an all out attack, given they come with a decent shooting profile already.
Peter: Thanks Joel!

Kieren Coates: Benoit Coming through with the big 5-0 with what almost feels like a classic skaven list from 12 months ago during the GV/GC meta
We love to see thanquol back on the table proving he doesn’t need a surfboard to show his strength, combined with double grey seers, warbringer and double priest it has access to 8 casts (with warlord for 2 spells chosen per wizard), giving access to great prayers and blizzard for some short range mortal punch.
One notable difference is the warbringer taking sheild of distraction, a rarely seen artfiact that forces the enemy to only allow 1 unit per turn to attack the warbringer in melle, allowing for suicide charges into multiple units without fear of return damage – Its an interesting choice as warpstone charm has been the go to choice for many warpstone fanatics, but Benoit has found path for the shield and has made it work
10 censors, 20 monks, hell pit, thanquol, warbringer, blizzards, great plagues – if you dont respect the output of this list expect to get tabled very quickly upon a misposition with a lethal combination of mortals and high volume physical damage.
Congratulations on the 5-0

Celefaze: The classics never die. They only fall short of the meta for a bit. With a few key differences, this is the type of list you saw quite a bit at the release of the current book. Featuring Pretenders with the Masque for turn one depravity, a healthy dose of blissbarbs for damage, blissbarb seekers for save debuffing, and slickblades for highly mobile depravity generation. At the helm is a Strength of Godhood contorted epitome general (with all the standard trimmings) for a beast of a lynchpin hero that can issue a ludicrous number of commands, debuff a major threat with the crown, and punch above its weight with multiple damage buffs. Where this list diverges deliciously is the addition of a special favorite of mine: Glutos Orscollion. A key ingredient for any ranged list that may find itself starved for depravity in the early game, Glutos shores up that early weakness by providing his own -1 to-hit aura that covers a respectably large area of the board. The big guy is also a solid melee threat and possibly the tankiest entry Slaanesh has access to. A flavorful take on the original recipe for victory with this book.

Carl Stokes: Even as we head full throttle into the indexification of AoS with the new edition this summer, we can still take the time to appreciate some excellently piloted KO lists. This one is pretty spicy, with the symmetry I love to see. Headed up by Brokk himself, this list really revolves around the perfectly balanced (as all things should be) frigate duo, both of which contain 9 endrinriggers for maximal healing and a very prickly exterior, should someone charge into them (or be charged).
Otherwise, the character department is a familiar sight, with the lack of admiral offset by a Voidstone Navigator and Stormcaller dirigible endrinmaster to unlock battleline endrinriggers and provide even more healing/shooting. Taking the nullstone icon ensures yet another automatic battle tactic for the army that’s the best in the game at scoring them. This sort of redundancy is really the name of the game for this list.
The amount of shooting that can be brought to bear, even without an ironclad, is staggering, with a killbox of 12” around each of the frigates. The classic move of slamming 2 frigates into an enemy and unpacking 18 Endrinriggers and Brokk that always strike first with extra attacks from Brokk can come as a real surprise to opponents and shatter the backbone of any army in the game.
We’ve slowly seen a transition away from the frigate/ironclad combo and more of this frigate/frigate/brokk set-up that leverages the speed and explosive melee power of the army rather than the pure shooting and mobile castle playstyle. It’s phenomenal to see how the KO book remains competitive across multiple GHBs, and the creation of fun lists like this one is something that’s been a real hallmark of AoS 3.0.
The only true weakness this army has is against massive recursion and monster truck opponents that can reach out and swat boats while maintaining the board presence to outscore them on objectives. This is an inherent weakness of non-Gotrek KO lists that can be seen here in this list’s only loss to the new FEC. Sometimes, you just don’t always have great matchups, and at the end of the day, a strong third place finish from Down Under is nothing to sneeze at! Great work, James!
Army Faction: Ossiarch Bonereapers – Subfaction: Petrifex Elite – Grand Strategy: Spellcasting Savant – Triumph: Bloodthirsty
Walter Brock: This list is a Katakros Petrifex list with a few new choices for dealing with different situations.
Starting off we see the Normal Spellcasting Savant, Mortisan General + Immortis Guard Brick. Aura of sterility helps protect the list from shooting.
The Soul Reaper is a cost-efficient choice to add a second wizard for the Acolytes Detachment. This lets the list get out a key spell. Or bank primal dice to stop opponent spells. Katakros acts as the main engine of the list. Buffing everything to 11.
Deathriders are a standard unit for OBR lists. Easy battle tactics and screen + durability.
two uncommon picks are the harvester and the 6 stalkers.
The Harvester provides the best points for damage value in the Ossiarch book. When buffed by the Ossifector for rend and wound rolls. Adding 5s to explode and Katakros’s Hit buff lets the harvester act as a missile threat to take out important targets that the rest of the list doesn’t want to deal with.
6 Stalkers biggest strengths are their speed and damage. Able to outspeed many units on the field and cripple them before the opponent has a chance to hit the OBR list. With Katakros and the Petrifex bonus, any counterattack will have a hard time putting damage through on this unit.
This is the top three AoS lists for XPG Age Of Sigmar GT that took place in Canada on the 9th and 10th of March. It saw 30 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

The Top Three AoS Lists
Army Faction: Sylvaneth – Subfaction: Heartwood – Grand Strategy: Spellcasting Savant – Triumph: Inspired – Seasons of War: The Dwindling
ENDLESS SPELLS & INVOCATIONS 1 x Spiteswarm Hive (40)
TOTAL POINTS: 1950/2000
A…K: A very interesting list from Jordan that makes great use of Belthanos’ force multiplying capabilities by going down the multi-hammer archetype. Durthu and belthanos are an excellent tag team, 11″ of movement + charge on a high damage platform like durthu is nothing to sniff at. The list also sports Drycha, who’s impressively self-sufficient and perfectly capable of bullying smaller units/sniping characters with her deadly ranged flitterflies. She is also able to remain self-sufficient with Regrowth and the threat of a deadly unleash hell.
The warsong rev general, fresh off its points cut, provides one of the best savant bids out there whilst opening up the board with Verdant blessings and spiteswarm hive charges all from the safety of your deployment zone.
Finally, and most intriguingly, the Namarti Reaver allies are a wonderful little tech piece. Sylvaneth often struggle to reliably deal damage with large portions of their army with the focus on strike and fading key pieces. The namarti are able to alleviate some of this burden by opening up additional avenues of consistent damage at up to 26″ range, helping to strip screens, provide chip damabe and bait All out defence in conjunction with Drycha’s shooting. They are a steal at just 320 points for the lot while not relying on an arch revenant in the same way that Kurnoth bows in a similar role might. The list also wields 45 ablative wounds spread across 5 units, which grants it an uncharacteristic level of board presence for a Sylvaneth army.
Allegiance: Flesh-eater Courts – Grand Court: Hollowmourne – Grand Strategy: Spellcasting Savant – Triumphs:

Endless Spells & Invocations Chalice of Ushoran (50)
Jake: This is a list that I’ve played frankly too many times at this point, and was designed to strike the right balance between objective control and power projection. With half my reinforcement points in Serfs and half in Knights, the core gameplay pattern is fairly simple: sit behind a massive wall of Serfs to score primary; jump over said wall with flying Knights to counterpunch and do battle tactics. Get charged and then charge – peak Warhammer!
Of course, this is aided by the extreme efficiency of the Royal Beastflayer blocks, who have outgrown their utility role of only suppressing Monsters and are pound-for-pound the best tarpit in the book. Their interaction with Chalice of Ushoran and the Archregent’s Countless Servants (as a unit with multi-wound models that nonetheless count as 1 wound) offers them eye-watering recursion potential. Many lists simply don’t have the raw damage required to cleanly remove them, and it’s always a tragedy when that happens – the five or so remaining models quickly balloon back to their full 20, choking out the objectives. There are plenty of tricks you can do with Beastflayers due to their unique footprint and the fact that all the damage comes from 6 models, so I find they are a joy to play with on the table.
I’ve opted to use a 6-block of Morbheg knights as my primary damage delivery system, as they are fairly buff agnostic, fast, and offer a source of mortals. Previous versions of the list used a second block of Morbhegs, but I have made the call to switch them for Flayers. This decision has aged well: Flayers open up a bespoke battle tactic, make numerous other battle tactics easier, allow you to move your Feeding Frenzy aura far upfield, and do significant damage in shooting, often drawing out a crucial All-Out Defense. I round out my list with two copies of the best Abhorrant and the best Courtier, respectively. Because my recursion is mostly passive or from the chalice, I am freed up to skip Cruel Taskmaster and make an Abhorrant my General, securing access to the very reliable Spellcasting Savant.

OTHER 6 x Tzaangor Enlightened on Discs of Tzeentch (180)
CORE BATTALIONS: *Andtorian Acolytes **Warlord
TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)
Kieron Bailey: A good 4-1 outcome with a variation on what a lot of Tzeentch lists are turning to (including mine!) which is buffing spells with a combat threat to back it up. Most chosen spells are focused on buffing your own units so it totally cuts out any spell ignores from Khorne or Null Myriad. In addition, with Cult Demagogue, the Curseling can auto-cast any of its spells using a pair of Destiny Dice that have the same number and it cannot be unbound. This can guarantee a Blizzard goes off or a Shield of Fate to make the Enlightened Hammer piece a bit more survivable. Usually this might only happen once a game, but with the Eternal Shroud potentially regenerating Destiny Dice, it might be a few times across the game that this trick can be pulled off.
While potentially being able to generate 9 Fate Points to summon a Lord of Change in their first hero phase, it’s probably easier to go for Magical Dominance with the Curseling as with 9 Destiny Dice, you’ll have a couple of doubles. Then turn 2 is when Big Bird appears followed by one or two other Tzeentch battle tactics and then a nice, straightforward Intimidate the Invaders with the Grand Strategy as the icing on the cake.
What the Tzeentch player needs is time for all of this to come together and the Pink Horrors partly do this (though 50 wounds on a mostly 6+ save isn’t as good as it was at the start of 3rd) but Belakor is the trump card here, allowing a key unit to be shut down for one or maybe two turns, possibly preventing a battle tactic and presenting chaos with the victory.

Units 5 x Plague Censer Bearers (100)* 5 x Plague Censer Bearers (100)*
Kieren Coates: Ridge has come through with a real mixed bag of skaven, focused on lots of bodies across the board and playing for points.
Starting off with the first choice is shaman of the chilled lands on the grey seer, enabling spellcasting savant as the grand strategy to score it if the grey seer is alive. With a 3+ bodyguard on the seer, -1 to be hit at range and melle next to clanrats, and the ability to scurry away this little caster is harder to kill than his warscroll may suggest.
However, it’s not a simple option, as with 8 rat ogors in the list, the loss of consistency from Hordemaster on the Master Moulder is sorely missed, however Ridge has opted for the stronger grand strategy which is respectable in a control style list.
With 8 rat ogors, 10 censors, a hell pit, skreech and jaws it has enough damage to clear most lists which dont respect its output, while having plenty of wounds and recursion to clog up the board for a long fight.
