Aaron Newbom: An interesting monster mash style list revolving around a souped up mawkrusha and pigs with Gobbsprakk shutting down magic.

I’m gonna be honest I normally see a mawkrusha in big waaagh and assume the pilot doesn’t really know BW well. But this man clearly does with a 5-0 and a tough run of it too.

In many ways this is a list that takes bloodtoofs and subtracts some offense, mobility, and tempo in exchange for flexibility and consistency.

With the meta as it is, the burst damage of bloodtoofs doesn’t break a Soulblight armies back, and this list has to control and late game power to finish the job

Danny Wadeson: Shambling forward, often standing stubbornly in the way, groaning all the while and liable to keep coming back – no, it’s not me trying to bird-watch while hungover, it’s shit tonnes of Zombies! Competitive Soulblight players just can’t help themselves can they – this is why we can’t have nice things! Or, we can have them, they’ll just cost more very soon…

Basically, if you’re not already aware, Zombie in Vyrkos are bloody annoying to shift. And Vyrkos allows for a once per game heroic action to summon 10 Direwolves too – so we’re talking about a WHOLE lot of bodies on circles here. While supported by double corpse carts, 6s to wound do mortals – that’s likely on top of a bunch more you get each time a zombie you kill rolls a 5+.

Gorslav seals the deal as the premier zombie-buffer, helping them shuffle that bit faster with Spoor Trackers and with the Phylactery to project an aura of 5+++, making them truly frustrating to chew through.

Lauka Vai makes an appearance as a cheeky source of -1 to rend, acting as a cost effective monster and possibly making a 6″ pile in too, to compound the misery of having to run head long into all those grabby hands.

Zombies gonna get nerfed soon, somehow – let’s hope the next Battlescroll doesn’t put them in the ground for good…

TOTAL: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: In 4th place, we have an interesting little Khorne list that is built around the solid brick that is a 6-man unit of Mighty Skullcrushers. 30 Wounds with a 2+ save is a very tough nut for an army that does not have plentiful access to mortal wounds to crack, especially if there’s a Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury nearby to slap -1 to hit on its attackers. While those two pieces anchor down the middle, this list can play some classic hammer & anvil games with the 10-man unit of Skullcrushers, or buy time for the plethora of minimum-sized units in the list to sit on objectives and rack up VPs.

The Hero mix to support this strategy is a Slaughterpriest for more prayers, a Bloodsecrator for a 1/game offensive buff and stronger Rallies for your Bloodbound pieces, and Skarr Bloodwrath as a reusable blocker/source of Blood Tithe. There is also a unit of Wrathmongers to grant extra attacks to any Khorne unit near them. Interestingly, Albin has chosen to g with the Bleeding Icon to shut off Battleshock over the Hexgorger Skulls to further disrupt magic armies, which reinforces the notion that this list wants to play aggressively. This notion is confirmed by the choice of subfaction, which rewards high charge rolls with strike-first.

All in all, this seems like a fun list that forces the issue and make the opponent play reactively to deal with your objective pressure while potentially setting them up for hard counterpunches from its reinforced blobs. Fun and effective – what’s not to like?

Roland Rivera: Despite this tournament being in a 2-list format, our winner seems to has thumbed his nose at that notion, as both of his lists are exactly the same! He has gone for the Hero-heavy Khorne approach which seems to be gaining momentum of late, as he has maxed out his Hero selections.

The list is anchored by Skarbrand and the Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury, which are a vital source of mobility in the form of 3D6″ charges (Skarbrand for himself, the Unfettered Fury Thirster for anyone) and doing most of the damage. The list also packs several Priests (including the Unfettered Fury Thirster itself) to help power out whatever Prayer or Invocation is the most useful at the moment (and this list has a pretty deep selection). An interesting addition is Theddra Skull-Scryer as an Ally (likely for Andtorian Locus-centered Battle Tactics). Skarr Bloodwrath rounds out the Hero lineup as a cheap, recurring space blocker that can also double as a source of Blood Tithe.

These Heroes have some troop support in the form of a blob of Bloodletters and Magore’s Fiends, but they will mostly be asked to do the heavy lifting in combat, on both offense and defense. Overall, this style of Khorne list seems to be gaining momentum this season, so don’t be surprised if you see similar lists going forward.

Jon Anderson: Coming from out of nowhere with a haymaker of a list is Nicolas Tassone showing the world why you don’t sleep on the REAL god of magic. Teclis and friends used the Andtorian Acolytes battalion to great effect in Nicolas’ 5-1 finish only dropping to Crematorians in the final round.

With a beautiful endless spell suite, Nicolas was sure to send his opponents care packages from afar courtesy of the Umbral Spellportals and Malevolent Maelstrom. This is what I like to see from Lumineth. No Vanari Sentinels in the list at all.

This is a list with some hair on its chest.

Danny Wadeson: So you got the memo that Soulblight (and Vyrkos in particular) are good now right? You may also have heard ‘something something zombie spam’ – but every so often, a trailblazer, a trend-setter, a maverick comes along and says ‘fnah’ to zombie, and ‘hurrah!’ to Deathrattle. Well, two by 10 of them as cheap MSU who can still be annoyingly hard to put down if you under-commit, and he does still have 40 zombs, which is a gentleman’s amount really.

He’s spent the other points on the usual stuff but he has slammed Cado in there, who is still underrated as a versatile hero on a teeny-tiny base. Otherwise, standard stuff of the ‘also 20 graveguard’ variety as they combo so well with Radukar’s ability to give something +1 attack after he’s charged.

And it only lost to Zaitrec LRL of all things! Either way, a pretty balanced Vyrkos list here that proves a) you don’t have to take a gazillion zombies to do well and b) that, actually, SBGL are totally fine and don’t need any more nerfs, at all! If LRL can beat them, nerf them again I reckon!

Walter Brock: What happens when Bonereapers and Soulblight work together in the same list? You get some spooky synergies. Gavin’s list has an unusual twist in the fact it doesn’t run 7 Bonereapers units to max out their command points, but more on that later. Onto the list.

Starting off we have Null Myriad. We’ve seen this do well quite a bit over the past few months. Being able to stop powerful spells on a 2+. When things like merciless blizzard exists is incredibly powerful. Very important to note. Katakros and the Regiment of renown do not benefit from Null Myriad.

Spellcasting savant has become the go-to choice for Bonereapers at this point. Killing the ossifector next to six Immortis guard is a very tall order.

First we have the powerful Combo of Katakros and Arkhan. Katakros makes everything tougher with his 1+ to save and +1 to hit Aura in a massive 24 in Aura. While also applying crippling affects to the opponent by giving a enemy unit -1 to hit and also potentially making the opposing player lose a command point each turn. Arkhan being a magical powerhouse in death, second only to Nagash himself. With three casts and unbinds at +2 he can compete with the best casters in the game. He basically has the hunger like vampires from soulblight. So he gets healing from doing some damage in combat. They also each come with an incredible healing ability. Leading to a potential total of 18 wounds of healing each Bonereapers hero phase at minimum.

The ossifector is an interesting choice. While it won’t be able to use the main ability on its warscroll due to the unit in the army. The Artifact applys a 9 inch Aura of +1 to wound in melee. Meaning Immortis guard can now be hitting and wounding on 2s. This artifact alongside Katakros makes the list incredibly efficient. Hoarfrost adds more good support of making numbers even better. Diversion tactics creates a powerful -3 charge bubble for enemy units. Potentially denying battle tactics or key enemy charges.

Death riders are seen everywhere these days for OBR. Easy battle tactic. Good screen. Good for almost any job. And with all the buffs the list can provide. Any unit of deathriders could be a deadly threat.

Immortis guard are incredibly tanky being 5 wounds and a 2+ save under Katakros. Arkhan throwing up mystical shield and All out defense will making Immortis almost impossible to take down.

Lastly is the Soulblight Regiment of renown. These act as a normal corpse cart and zombies unit with a few differences. The corpse cart is now a hero. This lets it benefit from the -1 to hit from look out sir, and adds another model that can issue commands (No OBR commands since it isn’t a Bonereapers model). And the big thing is the corpse cart gives off a 12 inch bubble of -1 to ward saves for enemy units within range. The zombies provide a cheapish screen. Something bonereapers don’t normaly have access to.

All of this ends up as a three drop list. Well done to this player.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: Taran Birk has brought us a spicy morsel of a Khorne list. Most lists of the Blood God’s forces rely on their troops – not this one. Instead, this list has gone for the full 6 Heroes (including the double Warlord battalion), the full 3 Invocations, and mostly kept the troops to the “cheap objective holders” role. Think of it as Khorne’s best Tzeentch impression.

The stars of the show are Skarbrand and the Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury, which will be giving you 3D6″ charges (Skarbrand for himself, the Unfettered Fury Thirster for anyone) and doing the heavy lifting in the damage department. The list also has several Priests (including the Unfettered Fury Thirster itself) to help power out whatever Prayer or Invocation is the most useful at the moment. Skarr Bloodwrath rounds out the Hero lineup as a cheap, recurring space blocker that can also double as a source of Blood Tithe.

Some interesting additions are Khagra’s Ravagers as an Ally (likely for the teleporting objective grabbing threat of Mask of Darkness, and Andtorian Locus-centered Battle Tactics) and a Cockatrice as a deterrent for charging into one of the big guys. Overall, this style of Khorne list seems to be gaining momentum, so don’t be surprised if you see similar lists going forward.

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Kevin Lathers: Noe has run a very similar list to good effect previously. With some slight tweaks in that list he seems to have improved his standing. Always good to see effective adjustments.

With only a single priest with Wrath of Vulcatrix (to secure the Grand Strat), this list foregoes the usual inclusion of a Runesmiter as well as any Magmadroths. Instead it relies on the Runemaster’s Ember Storm prayer and the new hero’s once per game 6″ bubble of Run + Charge to add any speed it needs. Further, the Grimwrath Berserker can be given Run + Charge as an oath or stick near the Grimhold to soak up the buff and take a different Oath. This makes the list surprisingly quick, albeit only one time.

With all these vulkites and Hearthguard Berserkers, the list can certainly sit on objectives and hold them, relying on the Flamekeeper buffs, Counterstrike, and Fight on Death to hold any charging waves of opponents to very poor trades. And then, if opponents do charge into the lines, the flamekeepers will often maintain their buffs for a counter charge/fight on the next turn with +2 damage on a units weapons; this can be devastating on the Broadaxe berserkers, sending them to 4 damage swings or making a Vulkite Axe unit have 3 damage swings with a ton of attacks.

His matchups were mostly favorable for Fyreslayers — SoB are notoriously a DPS check and that’s an area Fyreslayers seldom struggle with; further the new hero can be quite potent if he can get his once per game nuke on a gargant, rolling 35 to 40 dice for an average of 17 to 20 mortal wounds on a single attack. But managing a draw against Khorne is impressive with a Fyreslayers’ list which relies on auras, which Khorne can mess up with their controls, and shows not only the tankiness of the list but the skill of the pilot. Khorne can control the battlefield in such an exreme way while being tankier, hitting as hard as FS for less cost, and being able to deny the grand strat; so pulling out a draw is quite good.

Overall it’s a solid list piloted by a good player. Falling just shy of a the golden 5-0 but still claiming undefeated is no easy feat with Fyreslayers in the current meta.

Top Three AoS Lists for Feud on the Fens

This is the top three AoS lists for Feud on the Fens that took place in the UK on the 22nd and 23rd of July. It involved 32 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

As this event had less than 20 players attending there won’t be any list comments here as the guys will be concentrating on the larger events of the week.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

If there was one thing it always felt was holding DoK back, it was their terrible casting/casters – especially given their excellent lore. If only there was a way to make Mindrazor more reliable…

Russel here has taken a fusion list – The Big Lass is here with her double-reinforced stab-snek retinue – who at that number become an insta-kill button with their MW output and can be surprisingly hard to chew through – and msu, newly cheapened Aelves to fill out the battleline. Then there’s the double Heartrenders, who never go out of style as scoring pieces – in this season, they’re especially good for Surround and Destroy into Intimidate the Invaders.

Then comes the twist. A Treelord! At 230 it’s quite expensive allied tech, but their ability to stop a unit from piling in can wreak absolute havoc with an opponent’s plans, and against a squishy army like DoK could – and presumably did! – mean the difference between an enemy unit piling and killing half the sneks, or getting those extra wounds on Morathi – and not, which is a big deal.

With wins against the current meta-horrors SBGL AND OBR, this list and Russell’s skill clearly have legs. And tails.

Terries! So many terries! With the advent of the new Soulblight book, Avengorii was written off as non-comp even faster than people started complaining about VLoZDs – but their recent points drop seems to have tipped them into ‘viable’ territory, as evidenced here!

It’s a simple but effective list, built around 5 giant undead dragons who can do nasty damage and plenty of MWs – but the real synergy is in the Vengo Lord’s ability to allow them to ‘borrow’ the Hunger ability, healing up damage and going a long way to mitigating their usual lack of durability. Backed up by Lauka Vai’s key ability to allow Avengorii monsters a 6″ pile in – and with both Vengos capable of reducing rend by 1 (doesn’t stack sadly) – and you have a lot of monsters, capable of healing, mitigating your offence – supported by two devastating debuffs from the pair of Necromancers.

Beating the mirror, Khorne and Sylvaneth along the way is no easy feat, and this list only lost to the meta-terror Seraphon. A fantastic result for the ‘forgotten’ SBGL sub-faction.

Roland Rivera: This list is a blast from the past – Befouling Host lists with lots of Beasts of Nurgle were all the rage back in GHB 2021-era AoS, but have been dropping off since. However, Beasts of Nurgle just got a much-needed points trim, so this result may be an indication that this style of list can come out to play once again.

As far as playstyle goes, this list is using Beasts to run interference as mobile, durable annoyances that generally force overcommitting while the Hero Monsters (of which there are many) do the dirty work. The list is a strong summoner between starting with 2 Gnarlmaws and the Bell, so it can very quickly reach the contagion points needed to summon a Sloppity Bilepiper to prevent pile-ins against the Beasts or the GUO, or blobs of Plaguebearers to take objectives.

Another piece that got a points trim in this list is the Great Unclean One, and Max has kitted his out for utility. The Witherstave makes mortal wounds from disease trigger on a 3+ (which is a tangible improvement in their reliability), the Nurgling Infestation makes the GUO more durable by imposing a -1 to hit penalty on any attacks targeting it, the Doomsday Bell gives the player extra contagion points to summon with, and the Bileblade gives it an extra casting attempt in a pinch. He is a nice, durable complement to the hitting power of the Maggoth Lords, all 3 of which are present in this list.

This list requires a lot of careful positioning decisions, as its primary strategy is to physically block the opponent from getting close enough to the objectives to score them. However, in the hands of a skilled pilot, this list can be very hard for some armies to deal with, as demonstrated by this strong result.

Soulblight continue their inevitable shamble towards victory with a Vyrkos list that proves why it’s the sub-faction of choice since the (entirely justified) LoB tweaks in the last battlescroll. Not that Vyrkos came off unscathed either, but it was probably a light touch – chances are, given the win-rates, lists like this get touched a little more in the near future…

But until then – zombies! A key sub-faction ability here is the ability to add d3 models back to a unit in the hero phase on top of the existing recursion, plus a once per game summon of 10 dogs – which combos savagely with the 5+++ bubble projected by Torgillius, and the slightly smaller 5+++ bubble of the Ulfenkarni Phylactery (try saying that 10 times fast) on Gorslav. This, obviously, makes the task of killing *quick maths* a FUCK TONNE of zombies, and 40 (factoring in the summon) wounds of DIre Wolf fairly arduous. The corpse cart – excuse me – carts equip the zombies with a nasty MW on 6s to wound in addition to their MW rolls on dying, equating to a hyper-nasty attrition game with insane board control – helped by the command trait on Gorslav, allowing deadwalkers to make a small hero phase move.

I don’t envy the man for having to push all those models around but with that weight of bodies, you can probably afford to be less than forensic with your positioning. Taking down a range of opponents who mostly have very respectable output and tricks of their own, Guan here proves that simply roleplaying a George Romero movie will get the job done.

We’ve managed to nab him again! This list was so good I knew Pete would be interested in taking it on. Thanks again to Pete from PlasticCraic for helping us out!

It’s something that made SOB aficionados the world over issue a collective “Hmmm….”. What if we took the new Squigs Regiment of Renown, and added our three favourite Mega Gargants? A lot of people mentally went straight to the adrenaline-rush option of Trip Gatebreakers plus the Regiment for 2k on the nose and stopped there, filing the whole thing away as a thought experiment. But not Christopher Schelling – he backed himself in and put it on the table with glorious results. Chris earned this 4-1 the hard way, heading onto top tables in the final round with a 4-0 behind him, with wins against SBGL and Seraphon, meaning this was no bunny run.

Why does the regiment work well in Sons?

Screens! By default, your big boys will usually hold any objectives they’re near, and if you can hold them for 3 turns, you usually win the game. So, being able to protect the Megas from combat output for a turn gives you a 1-0 headstart in a race to 3. In that context, it doesn’t really matter that the screens themselves are not super-efficient.
Because the Regiment starts off the board, it’s easy to position the Rabble Rowsa where you can run towards him; and since your whole army is Monsters, they can all do the run and charge thing.

It gives you a few scrappy units to work towards Battle Tactics (such as Surround and Destroy) and your Grand Strat (run or charge with a unit every turn). That latter can be tricky when your Megas get bogged down or you get swamped and tabled – just scattering a bunch of different bits and pieces to the 4 winds makes it much more likely to be achieved.

Couple of Unbinds from the Gobbapalooza? Don’t mind if I do. Their Warscroll spells are dope too, and because they’re both debuff spells, they benefit Sons despite having no direct keyword synergy – they don’t need it. Plus, ya know, Mystic Shield.

So this is a group that synergises extremely well with the Megas – it really is their natural home, and it works in so well with your gameplan that it overcomes any natural inefficiencies from not being reinforced. Big fan.

Chris’s chosen direction was two Breakers and a Stomper, which leaves room for a strong Triumph bid in a 2-drop package. The Gatebreakers are still great fun, with their 4D6 smash bypassing a lot of anti-combat bullshit since it’s not an attack, just an ability. Sons players will be all too familiar with those combat phases where your 500-point combat unit does zero damage, even if you don’t choose the smash – and I wish I was exaggerating here – so the Wartsomper’s greater volume of dice should give you some kind of semi-reliable output when you aren’t desperate to spike, but just really to do something.

Because you’ve got the upside and inherent brutality of the twin Gate Breakers, Chris has consolidated with his Enhancements, taking a full package of defensive tech. 40 wounds CT on his General plus a 6++ ward puts him on 46.7 effective wounds and the Glowy Shield ignores rend -1 specifically (as opposed to reducing rend by 1). As a Sons player myself, that’s something I’d love to see addressed in a future Battlescroll, because it feels slightly outdated in a world of rampant rend creep – there is still a fair amount of rend -1 in the game though, so it’s still a decent enough pick, especially with the dopamine hit when you spike the bounceback mortals that it also brings.

The list can win games passively or proactively, and while it may still struggle on Battle Tactics, the list choices here take a positive step to address that. All in all this army has a really refined feel, and it’s something I’d be happy to take to an event myself.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Walter Brock: Going down the list we start with the sub faction choice of Null myriad. Allowing 2+ spell ignores for units wholly within 9” of Arkhan or the Boneshaper. Important to note that Katakros cannot benefit from this because he is still having the keyword for his own legion.

Overshadow is a different choice from the classic Savant grand strategy we usually see used. Overshadow means you would need to destroy all enemy battleline units while keeping one of your own alive. It’s a strong choice and unlike Spellcasting savant. You don’t have to focus on keeping one model alive and can spread out a bit more if the moment arises.

Starting off with the heroes. Katakros and Arkhan are a Dream team together. Katakros buffs the army to kingdom come with his command ability while also crippling the enemy with a few of his abilities. He may be slow but if he gets into combat with a hero nearby, he can hit incredibly hard. Arkhan on the other hand is the opposite of Katakros. Arkhan is fast, very fast, He doesn’t hit as hard as Katakros. Having three casts and denies at +2 lets him help stop important spells and cast important spells. They compliment each other very well and the synergies are endless.

The bone shaper rounds out the heroes. Taking Aura of sterility to cripple enemy shooting with -1 to hit and -1 to wound for friendly unit wholly within 12”. With Null Myriad and Aura of sterility this list is very resilient to heavy magic and shooting. Artisan’s keys let the Boneshaper potentially double down on is healing by letting it heal a second time on a 3+. This player opted to go with Hoarfrost since Arkhan already knows all the Ossiarch spells.

The Deathriders can do a couple of things. They can screen. They come with a relatively easy to use battle tactic. Because of their decent bulk they could also be used to block an opponent’s movement and stay in the way. These guys have a lot of uses.

This player has opted to go for a Unit of three Immortis guard and a unit six Stalkers. Stalkers being very fast with their hunt and kill command. Which plays well into the grand strat of trying to kill enemy batteline and supports an aggressive gameplan. The three Immortis guards are around for a few reasons. They can hit decently hard, bodyguard characters, and Unlock a Battle tactic in the form of Sculptures Entourage with the Boneshaper.

Lastly this player has made an interesting choice of using a unit of 10 Mortek Guard. We don’t see these little guys too often since the Harvester change. They have a few jobs that not a lot of other OBR units can do. They are the best points for the number of attacks in the book. At a nice 21 attacks for 150 where the Deathriders are 180 for the same number, and half of theirs don’t even have rend. They have a Unique command ability that basically gives them Ethereal at their 4+ save, letting them stand up to a few things that other units might not be able to. They are also the most Model counts for their points. So, 10 Mortek guards can run onto a point and have better chances of taking a point away from an opponent. A very cool choice with a lot of potential.

Finishing it out is the Maelstrom Endless spell. For 30 points this thing is a steal. The crazy thing about it is its damage is always going to happen. When it goes away it blows up so its guaranteed damage, and with Arkhan’s spell range increase it will reach a lot of places. All of this except for Katakros sitting inside of a Battle Regiment. Often this list will decide who goes first. With their score this player has done a good job at showing how they can make their choice effective. Well done to this player.

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Kevin Lathers: Bringing out the new hero from the Regiments of Renown, the Grimhold Exile, Noe has put him in a list that is all about board control.

And then, if opponents do trade into the Fyreslayers, the flamekeepers will often maintain their buffs for a counter charge on the next turn with devastating 3 damage attacks.

With wins against Slaanesh Blissbarbs, Ogors, SCE, and IDK, the list would certainly prove its tanky enough to take a punch and throw it right back. The 4++ ward saves on the HGB can prove a potent vanguard and objective holder. This is backed up by a Runefather that can swing with -2 rend 4 damage attacks on a 3″ reach which is nothing to sneeze at.

Overall this list is going to be a tough nut for many armies to crack. Opponents will need to choose their battles carefully, especially if the flamekeepers are ready to pop their buff.
