Age of Sigmar AI Championship: ChatGPT

A couple of years ago we had a go to see if AI could create a believable Top 3 Lists result. Needless to say, it failed miserably.

But it’s been many months since the, and we’ve loads of new AI programmes on the market and many upgrades since. So, what if we could see which AI was the best not only at creating an Age of Sigmar list, but also play them against each other (using humans, we’ve not come that far just yet) to see which would come out on top?

The Rules

For this I selected four AI assistants;

– ChatGPT
– Gemini
– Copilot
– Perplexity.

Their task is to try and create a 2,000 point Age of Sigmar list using the following prompt:

I will then check to see whether I can create a valid 2,000 point list from their choices. For ever prompt after the one given above, I will deduct 1 point from their overall total at the end of the competition. This will continue until we have a viable list from the AI.

I’m also going to put the smack talk down in each article so that you can tell me in the comments which AI you think won the Psych-out game. This will be scored by giving the winner 40 pts, 2nd, 30pts, 3rd 15 pts and nothing for 4th.

Finally, the AI’s will be placed into a Round Robin competition and I’ll have four players from the Woehammer Discord play their lists on TTS. For a win 100 points will be awarded and for a draw 50 pts.

Simple right? Yeah, we’ll see…..

ChatGPT

So Kruleboyz, good taste at least!

So what’s the list? What’s the first unit on their list that scream Kruleboyz when leading the army?

Yup, nothing says Kruleboyz more than a Terrorgheist!

It’s clear that the prompt I gave it didn’t quite hit the mark, but before I try again, lets see what else was on the Kruleboyz list?

Yup very Kruleboyz……

Ok back to prompt drawing board……

It took eight prompts to get to a list that could actually be entered into the tournament. So that’ll give ChatGPT -80 Points off from the start.

ChatGPT likes to make things up…

What about the smack talk? What did ChatGPT say about it’s competition?

Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at Gemini’s entry and more importantly it’s smack talk!

Small Minded General: My 10mm Fantasy Project

Some of you may be aware that I’ve recently written my own fantasy ruleset for smaller scale games.

It’s aim is to put you in the shoes of what a General experiences, being unable to move all their troops with clockwork precision and not always knowing the full picture.

Part of this has meant taking some glamour shots for the Rulebook. Painting the models and making the scenery has possibly been the most fun I’ve had with wargaming for a long time. For those put off painting a smaller scale, thinking its too small or hard I would urge you to have a go.

There’s no shading, highlighting or detailing, mostly its just patches of colour which come together once you take the 3 foot rule in.

Dwarfs march out to meet the Human threat

This is one of the shots I did for the rulebook. Aimed at recreating the GW battle scenes you sometimes get in their books. Here we’ve got some Human Halberdiers facing off against some Dwarf Warriors. Both sets of miniatures are sculpted by Forest Dragon Minatures. I bought these prints from Excellent Minitures.

Humans stand ready to receive an Orc charge

Here I painted up a load of Orcs from Wargames Atlantic (Also, a box of their 10mm minis at £35 basically gives you enough for a small army in the Fantasy ruleset I’ve written).

Orc and Dwarf lines crash together

In this one we’ve my Forest Dragon miniature Dwarfs on the right facing off against the Wargames Atlantic Orcs on the left.

All of these photos have been edited slightly in Canva, with the last one having a rain effect added over the top and the first two having scenic backgrounds inserted behind.

I’ll post some further updates soon, with perhaps some painting guides for the miniatures and instructions on how to make the smaller scale woods.

GT Win Rates

These are the first stats we’ve done in a while and things are looking a bit different despite it being very early days. As always those factions in bold should be taken with salt, as we feel there’s possibly not enough data there.

Estimated Win Rates if the Player Skill Levels were Equal

That’s a mouthful of title isn’t it!?

Essentially, what I’m trying to do here is work out what the win rates would be if the skill levels of all the players were the same (Yes, I realise this is nearly impossible to calculateBut I’m playing around here).

How it works is by calculating the average Elo of all the players that have had matches since the September battlescroll dropped. This worked out as 422.4. I then calculated how much difference there was between a factions average Elo shown in our original win rate graph to this overall average. The difference between these two figures was then turned into a percentage difference over/under the 422.4 elo. I then increased or decreased their win rate by this percentage (But this isn’t as simple as deducting or adding the percentage different to the win rate – you have to work out for instance what 4% may be of say 53% and then apply that. For Example – 10% of 40% is 4%)

Battle Formation GT Win Rates

This data is calculated in the same way as the win rates for factions. This only shows data for subfactions that have reached 100 games played since the battlescroll dropped.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the Age of Sigmar stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!). Neither to 600-699 rated players. Where we start to see the swell in players possibly chasing the factions with more favourable rules is in players rated less than 600 Elo.

To make it a bit easier to see the effect of higher skilled players, I’ve added the below chart this week which breaks down each factions player base as a percentage.

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

The Fabien Chart

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

% of Players with a Positive GT Result

Ideally you would want 50% of the players having a positive results for a truly balanced game system.

Consecutive Wins

This chart shows firstly the % of players with a negative result from 5 games at GT’s or GT+ in purple for each faction.

Dark blue shows the percentage of players who achieved 5 wins from 5 in the first five rounds of a GT or GT+.

Orange shows the players who achieved four wins from the first four rounds of a GT or GT+ but were unable to achieve the full house and lost their round 5 match.

Green shows the players who achieved three wins from three wins but were unable to win in their fourth round match.

Light blue shows all other players aside from those shown in the first three categories, who were able to achieve a positive result at a GT or GT+ i.e. 3 or more wins.

Battle Tactic Win Rates

This table shows the most popular battle tactic pairings for each faction.

Battleplan Win Rates

For those of you who are counted among our legendary Patreons, you can download the stats database below which now includes warscroll win rates and lists.

On top of this there is some added extras in the form of a faction dive into Seraphon.

Warstomper Mega-Gargant

Roland Rivera: This list is peak Timmy gaming – play a bunch of monsters, make them go fast, smash everything in your path. Fortunately for enjoyers of this style of gaming, Ironjawz has access to a good monster selection, and they can also dip into Regiments of Renown for even more big things to put on the table.

This particular list is centered around Kragnos. His ability to project an aura of 3D6″ charges enhances this list in a big way by expanding its threat range. The units looking to take advantage of this boost are Gordrakk and the Megaboss on Maw-krusha, which are potent anti-Hero and infantry tools, respectively. The Warstomper Mega-Gargant mercenary One-Eyed Grunnock offers more anti-infantry juice, and also is a durable piece that can hold ground in the midboard in ways the rest of your team would rather not do (and also makes tactics like Attuned to Ghyran significantly more viable). A Weirdnob and his bunker of Ardboys helps round things out by giving you access to Ironjawz’s excellent manifestation lore.

Despite my assertion that this list is peak Timmy gaming, playing it to the level required to podium a tournament (as this one did) actually requires a bit of cleverness. Your major advantage is being able to reach out and touch enemies that can’t necessarily do the same to you, you have specialist pieces that want to be directed into specific types of enemy units, and you have to try and keep your big guys from getting mobbed whenever possible. Measure out your average charge ranges and play your units to their particular strengths, and this list will serve you well.

Silver Bayonet: Britain – Bones of Albion Review

Britain: Bones of Albion is the latest expansion for The Silver Bayonet, Joseph A. McCullough’s Napoleonic gothic horror skirmish game published by Osprey Games. On paper it is a tantalising prospect. The wars of Europe rumble on, but in the mists and moors of Britain ancient powers are stirring. An old druidic circle on Anglesey has awakened and threatens to plunge the land into chaos.

Silver Bayonet has always stood out for the way it blends Napoleonic history with the dark folklore of the world, and here that idea is carried into the haunted landscapes of Britain. Undead Dark Age warriors, Normans and Romans rise from the earth, while the Silver Bayonet units must confront these ancient horrors.

However, there are some frustrations. The scenarios themselves feel rather familiar, and they offer the expected mix of objectives and encounters but are not as tightly woven into the myths and legends of Britain as they could have been. The choice of mainland Britain as the setting for a supernatural crisis would probably not have been my next step. Certainly with the Iberian Peninsula and the invasion of Russia throwing up possibly better options. The book does not always fully exploit the possibilities of a campaign in Britain either. The absence of a druid option for the British faction is hard to ignore, given how central druidic magic is to the narrative. It feels like a missed opportunity.

The biggest disappointment, at least for me, is the lack of solo campaign support. The Silver Bayonet has been praised in the past for including ways to play alone or cooperatively, but Bones of Albion does not follow through on this front. This will make it less appealing for those who, like myself, often play without a regular group.

If you enjoy playing with others and you are keen on the idea of Britain as a setting for Napoleonic horror then Bones of Albion will provide you with plenty of inspiration and a suitably grim atmosphere. The scenarios are serviceable, the monsters are evocative and the book gives you the excuse to expand your collection with all manner of folkloric figures.

But if you are buying this expansion solely to play solo you may find yourself disappointed. For me that prevents it from being the essential purchase it could have been. Bones of Albion is still a solid addition to the line, and one that captures the imagination with its premise, but it never quite realises its full potential.

Personally, I would give this 6/10. The campaign has some nice touches but it lacks a solo campaign and the missions feel similar to previous versions.

Plastic Trench Crusade Pre-Order: Prussian Strosstrupen Warband

Plastic kits have been recently announced at Essen! No longer do you have to rely on Etsy or a 3D Printer.

Starting with the Prussian Strosstrupen Warband. If you’re interested in pre-ordering the kit, you can get them from direct from the Trench Crusade website. This kit will be released on 22nd November.

RRP: £31.99

The Stosstruppen of the Free State of Prussia are amongst the most storied and fearsome of New Antioch’s soldiers. Storming through the twisting web of trenches that scar No Man’s Land, they move with peerless coordination as they deliver their famously brutal shock assaults. Even a small force of these noble warriors can smash through the toughest Heretic fortifications with nothing more than a hail of grenades, a furious flurry of clubs, and a jaw clenched with gritted teeth and prayer.

The Prussian Stosstruppen Warband box contains a complete starter force for the Free States of Prussia, a New Antioch variant.

The warband includes 8 models: 1 x Hauptmann, 1 x Feldkaplane, 3 x Stosstruppen, 3 x Yeomen

This plastic kit builds eight models, each with two assembly options. Choose from a selection of weapons, equipment, and head swaps.
