Top Three AoS Lists from Pyrhammer 2022

Pyrhammer 2022 took place in Poland on 18th and 19th June. It involved 40 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Before I jump into the Top Three, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

Also if there’s a one day or two day tournament you’d like us to cover drop us a comment on this post and we’ll have a look at it for you.

1st Place, Maggotkin of Nurgle

Allegiance: Sons of Behemat
Tribe: Breaker Tribe (Fierce Loathing: Bossy Pants and Clever Clog)
– Grand Strategy: Beast Master
– Triumphs: Inspired

Leaders
Kragnos, The End of Empires (720)
Gatebreaker Mega-Gargant – kaptur (525)*
General
– Command Trait: Old and Gnarly
– Artefact: Enchanted Portcullis
Gatebreaker Mega-Gargant – Broda (525)*
Artefact: Amulet of Destiny (Universal Artefact)

Battleline
1 x Mancrusher Gargants (170)

Core Battalions
*Bosses of the Stomp – Magnificent

Additional Enhancements
Artefact

Total: 1940 / 2000
Wounds: 100
Drops: 4

Danny: Sons walk again! With Kragnos leading the charge – the 3d6 charge 12″ aura to be precise. Gatebreakers, if you haven’t been keeping up, are the really hitty ones. A ‘little’ Mancrusher fills out the points. If you’ve not played Sons before, they can be surprisingly whiffy – something Kragnos is most definitely not. And now, with the new GHB, they don’t even give up monster points – so I can see them doing even better than usual for quite some time…

2nd Place, Maggotkin of Nurgle

Core Battalions
*Battle Regiment

Additional Enhancements
Holy Command: Steadfast March

Total: 1965 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 2 / 4
Allies: 150 / 400
Wounds: 111
Drops: 1

Danny: Many of you will be aware that Dragons just lost their hero-phase move, and many of you will not be happy with it. But it was necessary to slow the roll of lists like this that could pretty much end the game inside of one battle round after their hero-phase move, double shoot from the Knight Draconis, almost guaranteed turn 1 charge and then murder from there. Hilariously, this one also allies in 20 skinks for a fast, cheap objective grabber. So there’s that!

3rd place, Slaves to Darkness

Allegiance: Beasts of Chaos
Grand Strategy: Predator’s Domain
– Triumphs: brak

Leaders
Dragon Ogor Shaggoth (155)*
General

Total: 2000 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 4 / 4
Allies: 95 / 400
Wounds: 196
Drops: 4

Danny: Beasts of Chaos are just on a complete rampage after their Tome Celestial, and it’s not even just the one list they have! Dragon Ogors are definitely up there though, with a choice of three weapon loadouts for flexibility – this list has doubled down on the 2″, rend 1 flavour – re-rolling 1s to hit thanks to the Shaggoth heroes. Four Ghorgons that, from now on no longer give up points provide even more punch – for 155 they’re 14 wounds (albeit on a 5+) of fast ‘fishing for 6s to wound for d3 mws’ pain. Scary.

14th Place, Blades of Khorne

Allegiance: Blades of Khorne
Slaughterhost: Reapers of Vengeance
– Grand Strategy: Beast Master
– Triumphs: Inspired

Leaders
Slaves to Darkness Daemon Prince (210)*

**Battle Regiment

Additional Enhancements
Artefact

Total: 1955 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 0 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 114
Drops: 6

Danny: Khorne are now officially the worst Chaos faction, so 3-2 is definitely an achievement. That said, ‘worst’ is relative – three Boomthirsters and Skarbrand will still absolutely ruin your day unless you can either screen them out, trade very efficiently up against them or just snipe them from range. Did you know that Bloodthirsters of Insensate Rage do 4 mortals to EVERYTHING IN AN 8″ RADIUS if they roll a 6 to wound? It’s swingy given they only have 5 attacks but…you can see why the blood flows freely when they roll hot.

TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

Declan: Ah Nurgle… the new hotness and it’s easy to see why (it may not be; I had it explained to me over the weekend). I have now played a similar list and this is just great into the meta. Large numbers of low damage attacks means Seraphon Thunder Lizard don’t benefit from their allegiance and any debuffs (-1 attack etc…) have no benefit either.

Added to that they are lightning quick with a pre-game move and the Overpowering Stench stops command abilities being used nearby. So no all-out-defense or inspiring presence. It’s a great army which we are seeing a lot of at the moment.

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Rotbringer Cyst

TOTAL POINTS: (1960/2000)

Declan: I should have looked ahead. Sorry; but there’s not a lot different here – just more of the same because the same is good. When a player spends 1,540 points on one warscroll it may show a problem… but not for GW model selling.

There’s no criticism of the players though – it’s a good army and gives a good shot at 4-1s and 5-0s. If that’s your aim why wouldn’t you want to take one of the best armies available?

3rd place, Slaves to Darkness

CORE BATTALIONS
– *Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: 1970/2000

Declan: Ah Varanguard – hard as nails; hit like freight trains and are leaders so they can do great work into some of the missions as well. It’s great to see StD doing well though – this is not a net-list that is smashing up the tournament scene and a 4-1-0 result is impressive.

The Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Manticore is often substituted by a Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Foot, but the Manticore allows him to keep up with the Varanguard – and ensure the army hits like a freight train – all at the same time.

The Battleline choices are also cheap as chips (as a Gitz player I would kill for Battleline this cheap) and they are not bad. Great addition for screening so Manuelle can chose who goes first or second with his 1 drop.

14th Place, Blades of Khorne

Army Faction: Blades of Khorne

1 Slaves to Darkness Chaos Spawn (55)*
Mark of Chaos: Khorne

CORE BATTALIONS
*Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

Declan: Ah Khorne… a fighting force in a game of fighting – they’ll be smashing up the tables right. Unfortunately not – GW struggle with making Khorne good enough that they can reliably kill but not so that they win everything… and they’ve got the balance wrong so often.

The Bloodthirsters are only 280 points so are really throw away models (a Mangler Squig Loonboss is 290) so don’t expect too much from them – in this force is Skarbrand who does the work. 6″ pile in; and fighting well if he didn’t fight in the last battleround. Unfortunately most people know this now and either kill or avoid him – poor chap!

Incarnate bonded to slaan

Declan: To say Seraphon have done well in AoS3 is an understatement of the year. Chris has not taken Thunder Lizard, but has gone for magic. In order to compensate for the slightly reduction in survivability there’s an Incarnate! I don’t know how many of these we’ll see but they are nigh on impossible to kill in one turn (there are a few ‘instant kill’ abilities that can do it). It’ll be interesting how many Incarnate’s we’ll see given their high price point.

If I do play one soon I’ll be able to add some additional comments!! Well done to Chris – Seraphon may be the best army out there (or perhaps second), but to take them to a 5-0 still requires a high level of skill.

Matt rocks up undefeated with what must be the new Nighthaunt… how do I know – he’s got the Black Coach and is taking Nighthaunt! From one player in the UK with the Coach to three in one list at the Champions event this weekend, things have certainly changed for the ghostly bois!

No crossbow lads for Matt despite GW trying to flog them; but he has gone Bladegheists instead – and loads of them. They must be good to have gone 4-1-0 and the debuffs to opponents will be helping to keep them alive.

Declan Hazel has taken another of the new army releases, and like my recent comments there are reavers and thralls… lots of them! The reavers are the shooty ones, and although they have shorter range than the LRL Sentinels, they do move — and quick! — so expect them to grab some objectives whilst shooting you off the board.

It’s good to see different armies emerging since the release of the new book, but I would much prefer to see better internal balance (like Seraphon), than the famine & feast of the last two IDK books. Great work by Hazel!

Declan – Peter has clearly listened to my comments about his last secret pick and gone down the list somewhat. And I’m surprised he only had to get to 10th to get a Gitz list. Dominic managed the holy grail of 2 draws… a result that’s probably rarer than a straight 5-0; and all with Troggs. As Stuart Hodges (Trogg) will tell us – Troggs are the best and Dominic has proven this with a Trogg list whose only allies are the Marshcrawler and MireBrute. This means it’s all Troggs, all the time.

To cement my opinion of Dominic being a genius amongst Troggs, he’s also got an Aleguzzler, Rippas & Spider Riders. Remember the Aleguzzler falls over on any double to charge (welcome back to AoS1… which everyone thought dead!) and Spider Riders with poison arrows in the fluff — but none anywhere near the army. I think the lads leave them at home to prevent friendly fire. Great list, and a frankly superb result. Well done Dominic — and more of these please Peter!

Declan: The Drowned Men with Pusgoyle Blightlords is having something of a impact on the meta at the moment. Lots of flies were seen at AoS Worlds and at events before and since. The Lord of Afflications seems to be a given for the battleline, and the army is very quick – like ‘old’ Nurgle quick. The slow chip of mortal wounds from disease markers don’t seem to slow the game down much (in my experience) either.

It’s a good army – well piloted by Emma – but may be in danger of becoming the ‘new’ Dragons!

Declan: Ah… Soulblight Gravelords. They have been good since their book was released and Jeremy has piloted this to a superb 5-0 in a large field. Well done to him. It’s a low drop but definitely reliant on the Mortarchs. I’ve not seen Neferata before (although as fate would have it, I am reading a Black Library book about her) but Manfred is a superb caster – sort of a mini-Nagash – and both Mortarchs are monsters in their own right.

It’s worth noting despite the entry Peter has got this from that the Blood Knights and Grave Guard are reinforced… I know what 20 Graveguard can do (ouch), but I’m glad I’m not facing 10 Blood Knights in one unit! Wow… and ouch.

Declan: Bill is always there or there abouts at tournaments and this is no exception with a 4-1. With more Pusgoyle Blightlords (GW may run out at this rate), and the required Lord of Afflictions, Bill has gone for Belakor. As most readers will know he can ‘turn off’ a unit meaning that a unit may not act in a turn. It is not fun charging and then finding you can’t fight, and if you’re lucky enough to double-turn Bill’s army… the ability lasts until his next hero phase.

Declan: Peter’s selection of one to watch here is fourth… so no real prizes to him for finding it…! But it is another 4-1, and it has lots of Thralls. With the new book the Eels were quickly dropped by most players and it’s because of the output of the Thralls and that they get bonuses against models with 1 wound, and models with 3+ wounds. They are made of paper, but they are solid paper hammers… smash! I’m just glad I run a few Ardboyz for these guys — perfect, as long as it’s my turn, I go first and it’s not High Tide (ah well…. maybe not perfect then!!)

Peter: Skaven seem to be having a resurgence of late. This list, much like Anthony Trentanelli’s at the Motor City GT and the Slambo GT, relies on the Stormfiends to destroy anything they come up against. They have so many shooting attacks, and they’re super swingy. But! John has added an Arch-Warlock with More-more-more Warp Power which will allow him to re-roll all misses on those Stormfiends if he gets the spell off.

On top of that you have a teleporting giant-assassin-rat sneaking up on your lines and killing anything they can, and while all that is going on the Clanrats and Stormvermin are quietly going about their business claiming objectives.

Top Three AoS Lists from Mancunian Carnage

Mancunian Carnage took place in Manchester, UK at Element Games on 21st and 22nd. These events are organised by the fantastic Alex “Ghost Arm”. It involved 81 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Carnage is a great event as it tries to level the playing field between the lower tier factions and the higher. For example giving factions like Gloomspite Gitz and Skaven an additional 250 points for their army lists. Points are also awarded. For your painting standard and your sportsmanship which all get added to your overall score for the event.

You can also catch up on some of the games from this event by subscripting to The Hobby Room on twitch who were streaming the games live.

Before I jump into the Top Three, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

1st Place – Gabe Huddlestone

Gabe won all five games over the weekend. Along the way they beat Nighthaunt/Emerald Host in round 1, Flesh-eater Courts/Gristlegore in round 2, Idoneth Deepkin/Ionrach in round 3, Idoneth Deepkin/Mor’Phann in round 4 and Blades of Khorne/Reapers of Vengeance in Round 5.

Peter: Lots of big Monsters in here. The reinforced plague bearers will be a nightmare to try and shift from any objectives they go near as they’ll be getting buffed by the Sloppity Bilepiper to stop any units that charge them from piling in any closer too! Add to that units like Daemonspew who hits fairly hard but will allow Gabe to issue a command with this unit each turn without using a command point. Morbidex who can round heal half of all wounds that have been allocated to him in a turn and Rotigus a named Great Unclean One. What makes him different to a regular GUO is his spell Deluge of Nurgle:

Which, by the way, he can re-roll his casting dice for if he fails to cast it the first time around!

2nd Place – Freddie Leggett

Freddie also finished the weekend with five wins. Along the way they beat Ironjawz/Ironsunz in round 1, Cities of Sigmar/Living City in round 2, Seraphon/Thunder Lizard in round 3, Idoneth Deepkin/Nautilar in round 4 and Cities of Sigmar/Hammerhal in round 5.

Peter: A nice magic heavy list here, with a lot of fast units to grab the objectives early doors. The magic users are there to buff the rest of the army rather than cause massive damage to the enemy. With Ignite Weapons adding +1 to the wound rolls of a unit. Warding Brand allows units to dish mortal wounds back for every wound they suffer on a 4+, while Sear Wounds will heal up to D6 wounds back on a unit.

3rd Place – Russ Veal

Russ managed to claim four victories over the course of the event at the cost of a single loss. Through the weekend Russ beat Maggotkin of Nurgle/Befouling Host in round 1, Maggotkin of Nurgle/Drowned Men in round 2, Nighthaunt/Emerald Host in round 3. Being Mor’Phann the Soulrender will be able to add 3 models back to a Namarti unit when using their Lurelight ability and with 40 of these boys on the board an opponent must have gotten really board of killing Namarti! This obviously makes them prime units to take and hold the objectives while the rest of the army zips around making fish food of things.

Wildcard – Calvin Smith

Calvin won four games and lost one. Along the way he beat Soulblight Gravelords/Kastelai Dynasty in round 1, Fyreslayers/Greyfyrd in round 2, Idoneth Deepkin/Fuethan in round 3, Slaves to Darkness/Hosts of the Everchosen in round 4. You’ve a Bloodsecrator who will add 1 to the attacks of friendly Khorne units nearby. While Skarr Bloodwrath can allow Wrathmongers to pile in and fight before they die. You can guarantee they’ll have been placed in the middle of the many many troops available to Calvin. Then you’ve got essentially three bloodthirsters who can blend most things in combat.

Peter: Anthony is a big name on the American tournament circuit. He loves to call out big opponent’s before events in a Boxing bout style.

He comes off the back of another 5-0 with Skaven at the Motor City GT as well. To do it once could be viewed as lucky, but twice really shows his skill!

Danny: Two in a row with a list as swingy as double reinforced stormfiends is a helluva flex, Thanquol is the scourge of any kind of large unit. With so few bodies he must just systematically table opponents because the objective play is virtually non existent.

Honestly i can’t see the full rerolls surviving the new book, it’s probably the most oppressive shooting in the entire game.

Peter: I’d just like to add that Anthony beat Las Vegas Open winner Gavin Grigar in the final round. Who himself is a bit of a tourny legend for getting to the podium with Gloomspite Gitz.

2nd Place – Zach Kennedy

Zach also managed five wins over the two days with possibly the worst book of 3rd edition. Along the way they beat Maggotkin of Nurgle/Befouling Host in round 1, Idoneth Deepkin/Nautilar in round 2, Ironjawz/Bloodtoofs in round 3 and Seraphon/Thunder Lizard in round 4 and Maggotkin of Nurgle/Drowned Men in round 5.

Peter: And it’s Fyreslayers! I think their new book is really starting to find it’s groove now, especially with players who have stuck with it. Admittedly it probably requires a high skill level, but this just goes to show that you’re still able to do well with them. This is regarded as possibly the worst of the new books as well.

Dave: What they really need to compete is trousers.

Peter: Ha! And sensible hair. Where do you stand on the Snake ladies then?

Dave: Tail probably, stop them wrapping you up so easily.

Peter: Brilliant

Danny: ahahahah. So they went with two magmadroths and lots of vulkites, very interesting. I found vulkites surprisingly tanky when I fought them and Hearthguard surprisingly non-lethal, so going wider for board control and relying on the Magmadroths for overlapping charges up rend shots is really clever.

Peter: This Fyreslayer list also beat two Maggotkin lists including a Dreaded Drowned Men fly list.

Danny: Very nice. It’s maybe because they’re tanky – and iirc they have a way to turn off wards?

3rd Place – Randal Brasher

Randal finished the weekend with one draw and four wins. His path saw him beat Lumineth Realm-Lords/Zaitrec in round 1, Sylvaneth/Gnarlroot in round 2. In round 3 he drew against Soulblight Gravelords/Kastelai Dynasty, then beat Soulblight Gravelords/Kastelai Dynasty in round 4 and Seraphon/ Thunder Lizard in round 5.

Peter: So Randall went the weekend with four wins and one loss with a list that’s made up of 30% Kharadron and 34% SCE. A very fast moving army aimed at board control early on.

Dave: Poor Cities units, there are some good or even great ones but most never see play in favour of stuff from other books. Especially SCE.

Peter: True, it’s not as bad as some like Living City where we can see Dragon spam amounting to over 1.2k of points in a list.

Dave: Imagine what they’d have been like without the pre-nerf.

Danny: so…much…shooting…

Peter: Each Pistolier unit having 10 shots at 4/3/-1/1

Danny: The 4 dragons bog you down while everything else takes pot shots. Well, Ironclad is more tactical missiles rather than pot shots. Hurricanum can ruin your day too, really oppressive list.

Dave: Lots of pew pew noises!

Danny: Ha! What did it lose to?

Peter: It didn’t lose, it drew in the third round against SBGL/Kastelai list with Blood Knights and a Vamp Lord on Zombie Dragon.

Wildcard – Jacob Mathias

Jacob won four games and lost one, ending his weekend in a very respectful 8th. Along the way he lost to Maggotkin of Nurgle/Drowned Men in the first round. Danny: Gnoblars!

Peter: Four wins and a loss with that list is pretty insane.

Danny: Yuup!

Peter: It beat a Maggotkin/Drowned Men list in the first round with All the flies plus Bel’akor. I’m assuming the Gnoblars gum things up and the mournfang/stonehorn pounce on them?

Danny: Mournfangs are objective grabbers and chaff clearers really. The man is a hero for taking gnoblars, but at 5 points per wound they’re actually good value chaff and Mournfangs, at 10 points a wound and their damage potential – shooting chip damage, damage 2 tusks on the charge, 2 damage weapons_ are really solid picks, even if the bigger buffalos are more eye-catching.

Butchers are seeing repeated play as good utility pieces (like Warchanters, can buff damage AND cast a spell) and Kragnos ties it all together. Smart list and shows there’s life in the old frost-bitten tusk-dog
