BloodBowl 3 Beta – a review

When the new version of BB was announced, both the board game and computer version, I was apprehensive. My amateur knowledge of 40k and Sigmar made me wary as every new version seemed to add additional features and generally seemed to make the playing style just a little bit more complicated.

I was a huge fan of Football Manager over the years but when it got to the point where you could choose how long you wanted the grass and how wide the parking spaces were in the players car park, I lost interest. To me there’s a fine balance between playability and complication.

As an example, Skyrim is a superb game on PC or console, in as much as it’s huge but it can be played relatively easily. Grab a huge sword, some health potions and wander into any cave and vanquish your foes. Elder Scrolls on the other hand, was based in the same arena but just added in too many complications so I found it was far less enjoyable.

BloodBowl 2 on the console was the definition of playable. The style of play was straight forward, with lots of double clicking if you wanted something confirmed, throwing and catching were easy and visually there wasn’t too much going on at any one time to confuse my simple mind. That said, the AI teams were far too easy to beat regularly and there always appeared to be an algorithm that resulted in far too many 1’s being rolled in one half of the game, only to be reversed with a plethora of 6’s in the other. I liked the levelling up and the team selection, but with my football manager hat on I would have really liked to have been able to develop my team further and add in special players etc, which I never achieved.

BB3 is still in development with (at the date of this article) no confirmed launch date, with the targeted date already moving on a few times, it seems we could be in for a launch just in time for Christmas 2022.

First up, visually it is stunning. The opening graphics, introducing a goblin who is taking his first steps towards a BB career is smooth and entertaining (and a little bit humorous). The look and feel lets you know you’re still playing the same game but it just looks more modern with the stadium graphics (of which there are a few new ones to choose) bigger and better and the match environment much more pleasing to the eye.

The way you create your teams is similar, but better, with it feeling as though I was really in control of the kit choices, colours and overall customisations (although I can see GW having plenty of opportunities to take are well earned coin through additional options – new balls anyone?).

The special characters have a bigger role to play, but it was limited in the Beta version as you can add them into your team but they cost gold. You could do this in BB2 I know but it just feels like they’re more front and centre in BB3, with the special characters and journeymen being linked separately rather than one big pile of choices.

The playing options in Beta are limited to single matches v AI, hotseat or online. I played v AI.

The game play was very similar to BB2, but the views available of the pitch are slightly easier to customise, however the screen is cluttered. There is far more detail available on the screen and whereas previously a Blitz could be made by selecting a character and then double clicking on the target, you now need to choose action “2” beforehand. Similarly with throwing, rather than choosing your player with the ball and double clicking on someone to receive it, you now need to choose action “5” and carry out the actions. Look, it’s not World shattering, but it’s a little frustrating. Some of the indicators to “follow up” after a block are less easy to identify than previous. A few of these things may be PC reliant and may well be different on a console but they were frustrating.

The matches themselves are better v AI. In the previous version I don’t think I ever had a team throw a pass against me, so setting myself up for this with a high pressing defence caused me a loss against the free passing elves (pointy eared prima donnas). The AI tactics seemed to change as the match went on so I’m hopeful.

I had a couple of screen freezes and a few odd things happened, but I put this down to the game still being in development rather than a fault to be concerned about. Also, a large screen notification telling me of a death, appeared slightly earlier than necessary so I was aware my Black Orc had been killed by a Halfling (short arsed fool) before the actions had been completed, again hopefully nothing more than a bug that’ll be fixed.

All in all, I enjoyed it, but BloodBowl, for me, works in BB2 and the game play is fairly straightforward. Except for the rules change, the way to play the game is the same now as it was. Snooker has tried to reinvent itself numerous times to appeal to a newer younger market, but ultimately it’s still a game that goes on forever in relative silence.

BloodBowl is the same (not the silence and length of play; you know what I mean). Where you click in BB3 to do anything is different, the gameplay screens are laid out differently, the graphics and scenery is far better, but it’s still just playing BB.

From the earliest versions to this new reincarnation. The matches themselves are unchanged. The matter of playing BloodBowl has basically remained unchanged for years, and BB3 is no different.

It looks better, feels better and the interaction is superb, but ultimately will I buy it?

Assuming it sells for around £40. Does it offer enough new features to justify the expense?

No.

As I play against AI mostly, will I be needing any of the new online features?

No.

Will the ability to use Special Characters impact my style of play?

No.

Will I buy it?

Of course I will, and I think you probably will too.

AoS Chaos Stats – May

Following on from yesterday’s article about the Grand Alliance stats for May, I bring you the first of the Alliance ‘dives’. Where better to start than the main baddies themselves, Chaos?

Faction Stats – Match Win Rates

I bet you all thought Maggotkin and Legion would be leading this table didn’t you? Well you’re half right. But the recent results which saw Trentanelli take two GT’s using Skaven (an under used faction) has seen them climb to 2nd here. With win rates of 63.83% and 62.00% they are two of three factions that have rates that exceed the ‘balanced range’.

Many players state that for the game to be balanced, then all factions are required to have a win rate of between 45-55%. Legion and Skaven both vastly exceed that range this month. While Nurgle only just creep over at 55.29%. be aware though, that this is the faction as a whole, there are subfactions within Nurgle and others that both exceed this range and fall below this range.

Subfaction Win Rates

These are the subfactions ranked by their win rates. Only armies that have been represented five times or more have been included.

News – Horus Heresy Pre-Orders

It’s finally arrived the first (real) starter set for Horus Heresy, set in the 31st Millennium and featuring Space Marines against Space Marines before too many of them succumb to the changes wrought by Chaos.

If you’ve been living under a rock these last few weeks, or somehow managed to miss the Warhammer Community Articles this is the contents of the box:

Horus Heresy Starter Box – Games Workshop

The great thing about this starter set is that – although the models are painted as two opposing armies – you can paint them all as one with the addition of some transfers or, if you are feeling patient, some moulded shoulder pads which are surely on the way.

I’m of the age to remember RTB001 and the original Beakies. In fact the only complete Space Marine army I have (that is one that has been to a tournament), is a Blood Angel with most of the models from RTB001… so I am *that* old!

Whilst I don’t know anyone locally who plays, my weekly painting group do play and we’re meeting up in October so I hope to have a small force painted by then so I can give them a game or two.

That means this set hits the nostalgia button right in the middle and so I have ordered a copy through Sarah at SCN Hobby, and hope to pick it up on my way to Nottingham on the weekend of release!.

At £180- less your FLGS’s discount I think this is a great set. I am also picking up a Heavy Weapons set to go with it, and also picked some ‘Seriously Red’ spray from TT Combat which seems to be a reasonable base for the Blood Angels – perhaps with some Nuln Oil for the recesses.

TT Combat colours – picked up at UK Games Expo!

I plan to treat these as a separate Wargamer’s pledge much like the Warlord Napoleonics I have, and only get more once I’ve painted the starter!

I may need to pick up some transfers direct from GW as well, just to help finish off the army… (and so it starts)!

The Champions (UK) 2022

The UK AoS / Warhammer Masters has been running for some years, initially started by Ben Curry and the Bad Dice Podcast. After a COVID enforced break, the AoS mantle has been picked up by Rob from The Honest Wargamer / T-Sports Network for 2022 and renamed it ‘The Champions’. And he has just announced the 16 attendees for the event – and the format.

From T-Sports Network / The Honest Wargamer

It lists the players who have been invited and accepted and their places in the UK rankings at the cut-off date in early May. The list includes people who’ve been with AoS for a while and some young upstarts (doing some great work and bringing much needed new blood into the Hobby).

The Pack

I won’t repeat the pack here… pop onto the Honest Wargamer site to see for yourself … but I do want to mention the pairing mechanism Rob and this team have chosen:

There’s method in the madness

So those who have qualified highest should have a better chance of ending in the top 4. Surely the only fair way to do it! This is a great replacement for Swiss when trying to find a winner but also give everyone a placing within it. It also means that there is everything to play for on the Saturday as the players vye for their places overnight which will determine their play-off positions.

Qualification

Those eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that I have qualified for the final, which I am immensely happy with. I’ve been playing at tournaments since 2002 and have been in mid-table mediocrity for most of the time. I never thought I’d be near enough to the top 16 to creep into the event, and I’m not sure it’ll be repeated!

With the end of COVID I was given a few wife-points to go to ‘some’ tournaments and I went to see friends, roll dice and have fun. As readers of the Woehammer blog will know this started with a one-off Sons of Behemat (picking up an early 3-2 at Mancunian Carnage), then Gloomspite Gitz, but unfortunately this was sidelined as it’s just too far behind the meta! I then moved back to Ironjawz and had some good success including another 3-2 and a 3-1-1.

But the finishing touch was a switch to Big Waaagh for four tournaments, getting 4-1; 3-2; 1-4; and an elusive 5-0!

I’m still in shock at qualifying and haven’t thought about which army to take… although it’s difficult not to look at the Big Waaagh as I know how to use them!

I’ll post some more thoughts later, but for now check out the links above and good luck to the other 15 qualifiers!

Stormcast Eternals – Beginners 1000 Point Army

Are you a long time 40k Space Marine pilot looking for a new, but familiar, challenge or someone that likes being good at everything but not spectacular? Do you long to be the bedrock on which a new world is built?

If the answer is yes then I have the solution for you. And it involves a lot of gold.

Stormcast Eternals (SCE)

These returning heroes have everything, stalwart infantry, Heroes that not only buff but also slap pretty hard, mortal wound shooting and if you want cavalry then they do it right – with dragons.

I am going to run you through a few options to get started in the faction and give you a solid base for a competitive army. SCE start collecting boxes are out of print now, they were the SCE half of the starter kits in 1st and then 2nd edition. But they are one half of the current AoS Starter sets and we will be looking at a list built from the Extremis or Harbinger Starter Sets. These lists are intended to be competitive but might not quite reach the top table. I won’t be featuring Vanguard Raptors, Fulminators or Storm Drakes. Or not yet (read to the end).

There are a lot of avenues to collect SCE models, they have been one half of the starter sets for all three (3) editions of Age of Sigmar (AoS) and featured in the Moral Realm magazine. They have the largest model range in AoS and can be allied into all order armies or take allies from all order armies.

Warhammer AoS Extremis or Harbinger Starter Sets

The Harbringer Set

The current AoS starter sets offer 2 armies, SCE and Kruleboyz Orcs as well as a core rule book and a special campaign book. The Extremis set adds some useful Terrain pieces. For SCE the set provides:

The Cost

To create this list I’ll start with the Harbinger set and a Warcry: Thunderstrike Stormcast Eternals. This great value box provides both a second set of Vindicators and our Annihilators. You’ll also need a Battletome. The prices by region are shown below;

Key Units

Lord Imperatant

Source: Games Workshop

Say hello to our General, the Lord Imperatant. While no slouch in combat he isn’t here for his combat ability so we’ve given him the Arcane Tome making him a wizard able to cast one spell and unbind an opponent’s spell. We’ve given him the spell Celestial Blades which casts on a 5 and gives a unit of your choice within 18” +1 to wound rolls. This means he can make Praetors or Vindictors hit on a 2+. But his best trick is his warscroll ability, Guided by Lighting

Guided by Lightning

Once per turn, at the end of your movement phase, pick 1 friendly STORMCAST ETERNALS THUNDERSTRIKE unit with a Wounds characteristic of 3 or less that is in reserve. When you use the Scions of the Storm ability they may be set up more than 7” rather than 9” from enemy models.

Your whole list, other than the Lord Castellant, are Thunderstrike.

He can also issue a command without using a command point once per battle on top of a handy little shooting attack and his companion animal.

Lord Castellant

Source: Games Workshop

Our second in command, he brings significant combat prowess (and a friendly gryph hound) but mostly he’s here for his Lantern.

Warding Lantern

In your hero phase either pick one STORMCAST ETERNALS unit wholly within 18” granting them a +1 to save rolls; or an enemy unity wholly within 18”, if you pick an enemy unit roll a dice, on a 2+ the target suffers D3 mortal wounds.

Drop him behind your Annihilators and they will be very annoying with a 2+ save.

Vindictors (Battleline)

Source: Games Workshop

Your basic 2 wound troop with a nifty spear giving them a 2” range and a 3+ save. They’ll lurk at the back or can be dropped in close to an enemy thanks to the Guided by Lightning. They have 2 attacks each, 3 for the sergeant (Prime), doing a Mortal Wound on an unmodified roll of 6. On average then you can expect:

WeaponNo. of AttacksAvg HitsAvg WoundsAvg Damage (pre-saves)
Stormspear115.5
(+1.8 MW)
3.6
(+1.8 MW)
5.4

With Celestial Blades this increases to 4 wounds plus the mortal wounds. This is equivalent to 2 ardboyz after saves.

Annihilators with Meteoric Grandhammers

Source: Games Workshop

Finally our hammer unit, these beasts cause mortal wounds when they land, charge and even die. And they hit very hard. WIth the Lord Imperatant on the Field you can place them just over 7” from an enemy unit and they can reroll the charge giving them an almost ⅔ chance of making the charge.

With the Lord Castellant to support them you can improve their Save to 2+ with 3 wounds making them much harder to remove. Shock and Awe also gives them +1 to their hit rolls when on the turn they arrive in and they are -2 rend. So if they make the charge:

WeaponNo. of AttacksAvg HitsAvg WoundsAvg Damage (pre-saves)
Meteoric Grandhammer108.36.920.8

With their arrival and charge contributing another 5 Mortal Wounds.

Used carefully this is something your opponent is going to have to play around. They can potentially delete a Mawcrusha in a round.

Praetors

Source: Games Workshop

Probably my favourite model of the new Thunderstrike line these are meant to be a bodyguard unit but it is a unique version of bodyguard. At the start of the battle you nominate a unit that they will protect. Everytime a wound would be taken by the unit they are protecting you roll a dice, on a 1 or 2 the wound goes through to the Hero they are protecting, 3 or 4 to the Praetors and on a 5 or 6 it is negated.

They are no slouches in combat either with a combined 10 attacks hitting and wounding on 3s and doing 2 wounds for a successful attack.

Concept of Operations

Our list is not an alpha strike monster, instead it allows you to control the board and make your opponent play to your strengths. There are 3 key feature that make the list harder to deal with and you need to keep in mind.

  • Hammers of Sigmar have a 6+ Ward save if they are near an objective
  • Scions of the Storm lets you place units in reserve and bring them on to the table at the end of any of your movement phases (so Turn 1).
  • Thunderstrike units inflict mortal wounds on death – for every wound killed in that Turn they roll a dice, on a 6+ that inflicts a mortal wound – a real kill me and I’ll hurt you.

For Scions of the Storm you need to have one unit on the field for every unit you put into reserve. And the Lord Imperatant must be on the field for Guided by Lightning to work. The ideal set up then is to start with one unit of Vindicators, Praetors and the Lord Imperatant on the field. The Annihilators, Lord Castellan and other Vindicators are deployed in reserves.

Set the units on the field up in cover and play to go second, your ideal start would see your opponent look to engage you and let you choose a unit to drop the Annihilators near and destroy. The Lord Castellan is there to give the Annihilators a +1 save just in case. You then have the 2nd Vindictors to drop in another round, they can’t reroll but they can still start just outside 7” from an enemy. Don’t drop them too early though – the value of the Annihilators and Vindictors increases the longer the game goes.

I would use the Lord Imperatant and the Praetors to cover one objective with the Praetors covering the Lord and the Vindictors another depending on the mission. If it was a 3 or 4 objective mission I would put all of them on the home objective.

Overall this is a flexible list that lets you get to the table with an effective force while you only need to build 18 models.

Next Steps

SCE are in a good place at the moment so you have a few options to build your list into a solid 2000 point. Another Warcry kit combined with vanguard raptors and a Knight Relictor gives you a straight forward 1985 list build on this base. But taking those same Vanguard Raptors and adding some Stormdrakes (2) or Fulminators (4) gives you a lot of mobility. If you are worried about the extra VP from the Fulminators then run them as Desolators.   Lastly, there is a potentially cheaper option. AoS 3.0 was introduced with the Dominion Battlebox, this set included the same units as the Starter Sets we’ve looked at with more heroes, Vindicators and Annihilators. All up this box has 1415 points. If you look carefully you should be able to find an unsold kit or at the very least a Stormcast half and it offers a very affordable way to begin.

Hobby Update – 10 Gutrippaz

Those who have been following Peter’s Kruleboyz army will already know about the Gutrippaz and what they can do.

Welcome to Woehammer – have you noticed the lovely feeling of no adverts (ads), no pop-ups and no auto-playing videos? Well, that’s the norm here at Woehammer.

But this is only possible because of our wonderful Patreons. So, some articles over 1 year old will now display our Patreon request at the top of the article… like this one! Don’t worry, we are not adding ads – but if you can afford to donate to the site, we would definitely appreciate it. Membership is available from just £1/month (plus taxes!!)

When Peter asked for my help to paint a few Bolt Boyz I followed straight on with a unit of Gutrippaz from Dominion.

10 Dominion Kruleboyz Gutrippaz

Unfortunately, they are not the best unit at the moment, due to their high points cost, but the warscroll definitely has potential. Hopefully they’ll get a point reduction in the new General Handbook due this summer.

Closeup!

I have used my regular red & blue scheme which is common across all my Destruction forces. The blue on the shoulder pad is Nihilakh Oxide which I use frequently – it’s especially good for Destruction armies where I see their weapons as being old and reused from previous owners.

Another Closeup

And the red scareshields to cause -1 to hit for opponents!… hopefully.

So, I’m waiting for the GHB update to see if these get a points decrease… especially as I have loads of them from mutiple Dominion sets!

Book Review – Warhawk

Book 6 The Siege of Terra by Chris Wraight

Welcome to Woehammer – have you noticed the lovely feeling of no adverts (ads), no pop-ups and no auto-playing videos? Well, that’s the norm here at Woehammer.

But this is only possible because of our wonderful Patreons. So, some articles over 1 year old will now display our Patreon request at the top of the article… like this one! Don’t worry, we are not adding ads – but if you can afford to donate to the site, we would definitely appreciate it. Membership is available from just £1/month (plus taxes!!)

Chris Wraight has written a few books on the Khan of the White Scars and he enters the Siege of Terra when the Khan decides that attack is the best form of defence and attacks Mortarion and the Death Guard for the Space Port… hoping for the arrival of the Ultramarines and Gulliman.

Warhawk Cover from Black Library

From the book:

The Inner Walls are breached.

Traitor vanguards tear towards the heart of the Palace, sensing victory. Desperate gambits are attempted: an unwilling saint is released into the ruins, as well as an enthusiastic sinner. A black sword rises, forged from spite, ready to create a legend. But amid the slaughter, Jaghatai Khan, Warhawk of Chogoris, prepares to launch the most audacious strike of the conflict. His goal is nothing less than the liberation of the Lion’s Gate space port. Cut off from any help, he stakes everything on one desperate counter-offensive, launched against an old enemy who has been made far greater than he ever was before. As the White Scars ride out against the newly crowned lords of life and death, they know that defeat for them dooms not only the Legion, but Terra itself.

As we approach the end of the end with the Siege of Terra things are definitely hotting up and it’s great to see Chris Wraight return to the White Scars and the battles with Mortarion and his Death Guard.

The Khan is stuck on Terra where he is one of the Primarchs facing the invasion of Horus in the final stages of the Heresy and it is not his natural environment, being trapped behind walls, unable to use the speed of his jetbikes. Eventually he grows tired of defense and goes on the attack… straight towards the Death Guard and the Lion’s Gate Space Port.

This is another great addition to the series, and one I liked a lot – which, considering neither of the chapters hold particular interest for me was down to the good writing and pace. The White Scars are introduced slightly in case you hadn’t seen or read of them before and then it’s quickly into the action – there are still lots of smaller stories whirling around here, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting a little lost! I certainly did.

That said, it is a fun addition to the story which slowly moves towards it’s conclusion and Chris Wraight does a good job of bringing in the White Scars, but keeping the underlying story moving as well.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Top Three AoS Lists from Trouble at Mill

Leodis Games – Trouble at Mill took place in Farsley, UK on 14th and 15th May. This was a 1500 point tournament as opposed to the usual 2,000. It involved 14 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Before I jump into the Top Three, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

1st Place – Jake Helm

Jake won all five games over the weekend. Along the way he beat Fyreslayers/Greyfyrd in round 1, Fyreslayers/Greyfyrd in round 2, Disciples of Tzeentch/Hosts Duplicitous in round 3, Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar in round 4 and Maggotkin of Nurgle/Drowned men in Round 5.

Danny: So it’s looking like Nurgle are pretty good huh? Although props to Jake for avoiding flies and running with the adorable Beasts of Nurgle pack instead. Spoilpox also doesn’t see a huge amount of play as he’s more a buff piece for plaguebearers – but why wouldn’t you want to run a hero whose main attack is called ‘disgusting sneeze’? Again, high pressure, high wound, highly durable that plays the objective super well. Will the forthcoming books have tools to dethrone the multiple rampant nurgle lists? Time will shortly tell!

2nd Place – Simon Burdett

Simon managed four wins over the two days losing only against 1st placed Jake in round 5. Along the way they beat Stormcast Eternals/Hallowed Knights in round 1, Gloomspite Gitz in round 2, Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar in round 3 and Disciples of Tzeentch/Hosts Duplicitous in round 4.

While we’re repeatedly doing Nurgle – allow me to speculate – new Nighthaunt may be able to outswarm and re-position from Nurgle pinning/control plays – could definitely be a counter to their recent dominance! Not long to wait and find out.

Michael also finished the weekend with one loss and four wins. His path saw him beat Fyreslayers/Greyfyrd in round 1, then lose to Disciples of Tzeentch/Hosts Duplicitous in round 2. Danny: Lumineth are the army everyone loves to hate – but they’re not actually showing up on podiums that much these days, often because if you can tank their initial Sentinel hell-fire, you can usually outscore and whittle them down. But sometimes, someone decides to flex and run no Sentinels, no foxes, no wardens, and go full rock’n’roll with 3 mountain cows and supporting Stoneguard/mages for full on synergy and literal hammers everywhere. Big congrats for going 4-1 with a list I’ve never seen before – but it makes sense, those hammer-cows can be a nightmare to shift and with access to rend 2, plus one nasty ranged attack each, when they hit, you really feel it.

Wildcard – George Elton

George won three games and lost two, ending his weekend in a very respectful 4th. Along the way he lost to 2nd placed Michael and his Nurgle in round1, then lost to 1st place Jake and his Nurgle in round 2. After that being sick of fighting Nurgle no doubt, he went on to beat Maggotkin of Nurgle/Blessed Sons in round 3, Flesh-eater Courts/Blisterskin in round 4 and Disciples of Tzeentch/Hosts Duplicitous in round 5.

Danny: Fyreslayers are still one of the new-book-underdogs, but in past weeks we’ve seen them encroaching on the podium – which hopefully suggests it’s just a tricky book with a higher skill floor than we imagined. This list trades the usual massive blobs of Hearthguard for more of the ‘smaller’ bezerkers to get more bodies on the board, and pops an interesting tech piece and a 3rd flavour of bezerker into the mix, in the form of a Grimwrath with Draught of Magmalt ale. Grimwraths pick an Oath (each one gives a variety of buffs) at the start of the game, which allows for a bit of reactivity – and Magmalt Ale is a once per game ‘double attacks’ suggesting George was using this little dwarf-that-could as a guided missile. Nice play!

Warscroll Statistics – Gloomspite Gitz (Troggoth)

Below you will find the Gloomspite Gitz (Troggoth) Warscroll Statistic cards.

What the cards show:

  • Warscroll Wheel: This information is the standard Warscroll wheel. However, it shows the maximum statistics for the unit in place of any * as shown on the units Warscroll.
  • Resilience: This information shows the MINIMUM number of hits BEFORE saves for each rend type for this unit to be destroyed post BATTLESHOCK
  • Weapon Stats: This shows the AVERAGE damage for ALL models armed with that weapon in the unit BEFORE any saves are made. It also shows the MAXIMUM damage for ALL models armed with that weapon in the unit. The final column shows the threat range, which is a combination of the units movement and maximum charge roll (plus run roll if applicable) for that unit.
  • Unsaved Damage: This section shows the damage output for all models armed with that weapon in the unit AFTER the various save values are made.
