Age of Sigmar: 4th Edition Meta Stats (June Battlescroll) – 27th July 2025

We’ve updated the method of calculating the Elo ratings into our Age of Sigmar stats, this includes an attempt to reflect both the tournament strength and the faction strength.

All of the results in this article are taken from Best Coast Pairings, Stats and Ladders, Ecksen, New Recruit, Tourneykeeper, Milarki and Longshanks. They include GT (Two day events) or GT+ (6 or more rounds) only.

For patrons, you’ll be able to download and play with the database as well (which includes all the lists and stats for all the factions) as reading this weeks Patreon only analysis of Seraphon.

As always, if you’re struggling to read a chart, you should be able to right click and then either view or download the image.

GT Win Rates

Estimated Win Rates if the Player Skill Levels were Equal

That’s a mouthful of title isn’t it!?

Essentially, what I’m trying to do here is work out what the win rates would be if the skill levels of all the players were the same (Yes, I realise this is nearly impossible to calculateBut I’m playing around here).

How it works is by calculating the average Elo of all the players that have had matches since the April battlescroll dropped. This worked out as 426.7. I then calculated how much difference there was between a factions average Elo shown in our original win rate graph to this overall average. The difference between these two figures was then turned into a percentage difference over/under the 426.7 elo. I then increased or decreased their win rate by this percentage (But this isn’t as simple as deducting or adding the percentage different to the win rate – you have to work out for instance what 4% may be of say 53% and then apply that. For Example – 10% of 40% is 4%)

Battle Formation GT Win Rates

This data is calculated in the same way as the win rates for factions.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the Age of Sigmar stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!). Neither to 600-699 rated players. Where we start to see the swell in players possibly chasing the factions with more favourable rules is in players rated less than 600 Elo.

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

The Fabien Chart

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

% of Players with a Positive GT Result

Ideally you would want 50% of the players having a positive results for a truly balanced game system.

Consecutive Wins

This chart shows firstly the % of players with a negative result from 5 games at GT’s or GT+ in purple for each faction.

Dark blue shows the percentage of players who achieved 5 wins from 5 in the first five rounds of a GT or GT+.

Orange shows the players who achieved four wins from the first four rounds of a GT or GT+ but were unable to achieve the full house and lost their round 5 match.

Green shows the players who achieved three wins from three wins but were unable to win in their fourth round match.

Light blue shows all other players aside from those shown in the first three categories, who were able to achieve a positive result at a GT or GT+ i.e. 3 or more wins.

Battle Tactic Win Rates

This table shows the most popular battle tactic pairings for each faction. We only show pairings where the faction players have used the pairings in 50 games or more.

The full list is in our excel file which you can download if you’re a Patreon.

Battleplan Win Rates

For those of you who are counted among our legendary Patreons, you can download the stats database below which now includes warscroll win rates and lists.

On top of this there is some added extras in the form of a faction dive into Seraphon.

Forgotten Ruin: Part 1 – Prep

You may have read my review of Modiphius’ Forgotten Ruin recently, a solo adventure game set in a fantasy world of Orcs, Trolls, and Dragons. But, rather than controlling a warband of Warriors, clerics, and healers, you instead have a unit of modern-day infantry.

I enjoyed the game so much I decided I would do a campaign for the site.

So… prepare to enter the world of Forgotten Ruin from the British perspective, the eyes of the elite 22 SAS regiment. This series will follow a troop of SAS as they navigate the dangers of Ruin, paving the way for a larger force. This article introduces the team, their equipment, the environment they’ll be fighting in, and the first enemies they’ll face.

We’ll publish a new article each month as we keep track of 22 SAS in the Forgotten Ruin.

Squad Creation

First up is creating our unit. Forgotten Ruin asks you to create a squad along with a platoon leader and platoon sergeant. In the book, these soldiers are from the US Army Rangers. But being British, I wanted to switch the unit up and bring it closer to home.

PLATOON COMMAND
Captain Anthony Smith – Troop Commander
The officer in overall command, responsible for strategic decisions.
Sergeant-Major Craig Daniels – Troop Sergeant
The senior NCO, responsible for discipline and operational efficiency.
Sergeant Leo Woods – Squad Leader
Leads the initial ground element and reports to the Sergeat-Major.

Sgt. Leo Woods

1 FIRE TEAM
Corporal Ben Richardson – Section Commander
Section commander leading the first fire team.
Trooper Cian Fletcher
Trooper Adam Bennett
Provides additional firepower to the fire team with an underslung grenade launcher
Trooper Lawrence Bell
Provides long-range reconnaissance and overwatch with their sniper rifle.

2 FIRE TEAM
Lance Corporal John Porter – Section Second-in-Command
Leads the second fire team.
Private Jacob Fox
Private Liam Baxter
Provides additional firepower to the team with an underslung grenade launcher
Private Danny Jordan
Provides heavy firepower with the team machine gun and anti-tank capability with an NLAW.

1. Fire Team

I chose to use Anvil Industries 3D prints for the models of the SAS, using their modern infantry choices to create what hopefully would pass as the elite British unit. To make them stand out, I chose a simple camouflage scheme (though not green as I didn’t want them to blend into the board too much).

When you first create your unit, you can create three known personalities. Think of these like the main characters of a TV series. One of these has to be the Squad Leader, while another needs to be one of your Fire Team leaders, and the final one can be anyone.

I rolled the personality traits for Sergeant Leo Woods and got Independent Minded, Confident and Hot tempered. As an added bit of depth I used a random hometown generator, and Sergeant Woods comes from the village of Washington in Northumberland.

Corporal Ben Richardson got Loyal, Imaginative and always asking to borrow things. Cpl Richardson comes from Macclesfield in Cheshire.

Finally I decided to choose trooper, Cian Fletcher, as the third character who got Logical, Confident and Loves snacks. Cian Fletcher comes from Liverpool.

Region 1

I rolled up the enemy mobs of evil humans for the first region and got three mobs of warriors with one led by a champion.

Mob 1 – Evil Humans
Mob 3 – Evil Humans + champion

I don’t actually have any suitable miniatures for the Evil Humans so I bought a box of Wargames Atlantic Dark Age Irish Warriors.

Touchdown, lads

The familiar thrum of the Chinook’s rotors vibrated through the cabin as it descended, stirring up a gritty haze that smelled faintly of earth and something else… something metallic. Strapped into the jump seats, the troop was a collection of green and black shapes in the dim light. This wasn’t a standard drop; the landing felt heavy, almost reluctant.

“Touchdown, lads,” Troop Sergeant Craig Daniels’ voice, calm and steady, came over the comms. “Let’s get this bird secured. Looks like she’s decided to take an early retirement.”

Corporal Ben Richardson shifted in his seat, peering out into the gloom. “Early retirement in this charming locale, Sar’nt Major? Hope the pension plan’s decent.”

A low chuckle rippled through the comms. It sounded like Trooper Cian Fletcher. “Knowing our luck, Richo, the retirement package involves a complimentary burial plot.”

Sergeant Leo Woods’ voice cut in. “Less talk, more action. Let’s see why our chariot’s decided to become a garden ornament.”

The Chinook settled with a final, shuddering thud. The rotors wound down, the sudden silence amplifying the strange sounds of the night a low hum, the rustling of unseen things. Then, a series of worrying mechanical groans and clicks echoed from the engine compartment.
“Pilot’s reporting issues, Sar’nt Major,” a voice crackled, Trooper Liam Baxter, sounding a touch strained. “Something’s gone tits up with the power.”

Daniels’ reply was immediate and decisive. “Right, standard drills. Woods, you’re with me. Richardson, take Fletcher and Bennett, sweep three-six-zero out to twenty metres. Porter, you take Fox and Baxter, same on the opposite arc. Bell, find us some high ground on the bird. Jordan, heavy gun facing out, eyes peeled.”

The side door creaked open, revealing a wall of darkness. The air was cool and carried that odd metallic scent.

Woods was the first out, his rifle held low and ready. Daniels followed,
“Anything obvious?” Daniels’ voice was a low murmur.

“Negative, Sar’nt Major,” Woods replied, his gaze sweeping the unseen terrain. “Just black as pitch and quiet… too quiet.”

Richardson’s voice came over the comms. “Strange vegetation out here, Sar’nt Major. Nothing I recognise.”

Fletcher’s voice followed quickly. “Smells like a scrap yard after a thunderstorm.”

Bell’s calm tone reported, “Good overwatch from the roof, Sar’nt Major. Can’t see much beyond the immediate vicinity.”

Jordan’s steady voice confirmed, “Heavy weapon’s online, Sar’nt Major. Ready to roll if needed.”

Daniels surveyed the immediate area, his senses sharp. The unexpected grounding of their transport had thrown a spanner in the works, but these lads were adaptable.

“Alright,” he commanded, his voice firm but low. “Woods, secure the immediate perimeter around the Chinook with me. Richardson, Porter, keep your patrols tight and report anything out of the ordinary. We’re not going anywhere for a while, it seems. Let’s make sure whatever’s decided to trap our taxi doesn’t get any closer.”

With practised efficiency, the troop moved into their assigned roles, the initial banter fading into the focused silence of professional soldiers facing an unknown situation.

Campaign Area

I used a map I found in the style I wanted off the Internet and then drew regions on it using Canva. For additional forward planning, I randomly determined the mob types that would be in each region as well. This way, I can plan the models out!

The initial battle will take place in region 1, a dense woodland area. The terrain will be similar to that of a European woodland but with subtle differences. The Chinook, will be barricaded for defense and will serve as the troop’s initial base of operations.

Check in next month for the first Batrep.

Luis Mendoza: First and foremost, congratulations to Peter, not easy work nowadays reaching a 5 – 0. His list is based on the good mix between resilience and output damage, able to create deifferent synergies that’s leading to hit hard in the proper moment. But let’s take a look into the list, Sentinels of Bleak Citadels allows to select one Ruination unit in every hero phase and enjoying with a 5+ ward, then almost everything here – other than Knight Relictor, Vigilors and Stormcoven – can be selected, so good.

And starting with heroes, as must to be, Iridan with SoGy profile, is a Priest level 1, her seasonal abilities have turned her in one of the most frequently used profiles in SCE, able to resist Non-core abilities on her or another Ruination unit wholly within 12″ with a re-roll included, a prayer improving the Rend in a ruination unit if a 3+ roll, or 2 units in a 7+, so needed specially after getting used using Special Assignment ability on Prosecutors. But she’s also a hidden hammer when is required, able to jump in a 3+ into a better position pivoting in a selected engaged unit. Then, we have to Lord Terminos, the combo with QSD artefact and reinforced unit of Reclusians, besides to taking Legendary Tenacity heroic trait getting a good chance to keep him on game in a 3+ roll in case of an attack could kill him. Terminos is selecting once per battle a ruination non-hero unit to fight immediatly after him, here the Quick Silver Draught fits perfectly. Continuing with heroes, we count with Knight Relictor, a second priest – the best infantry priest on SCE – reducing ward abilities on a target at 12″ and also supporting to hel with other utility prayers like translocation or banking Ritual points getting Bless weapons, and finally in this section Lord Vigilant on gryph-stalker, allowing to fight twice in the same phase to a non-hero ruination unit, once per battle.

About the Non-hero units, the Prosecutors are still a threat for the enemy, specially if they go with Rend 2, same condition as was in the last GHB, not much to say here, they can remove a tough target if they are fully buffed with the 5+ Ward + Finest Hour + Bless Weapons + Rend 2; able to deny Covering Fire or Rampage abilities, and this list count with 2 reinforced units, huge. Also Reclusians, on of my favorite units, creating MWs on crits, same condition explained if they are fully buffed, but here they are covering the anvil/hammer rol, because can roll resistance in a 3+ if there are counting with memorians on the game; this unit is the most frequently selected by Terminos to fight after him, and also with Lord Vigilant they can fight twice, so usable in opponent’s turn or yours. Stormcoven is covering the wizard rol, the chance to get Strike first or strike last in the correct moment is a good resource, specially against armies that have this mechanics too. And yes, Vigilors to replace the need of the AoA, specially in this season. And the portal, needed to increase board presence!

Aetherwrought machineries, the no cost manifestation pack that helps with abilities that includes the chance to avoid redeploy with Pendulum, and improving the resilience of Stormcoven with Chronomantic Cogs.

The list now includes tactics, we can’t ignore them, Intercept and Recover, goal is killing 3 enemy units selected by your opponent; one of the most popular cards if you are counting with good damage output in your list, considering Prosecutors threatening range this could be not hard to get it, even if they are trying to hidden them. And Restless Energy, is about controlling and stealing objectives in enemy territory or that belonged to your opponent. The list is perfectly engaging everything, so congrats again to Peter.

Age of Sigmar: 4th Edition Meta Stats (June Battlescroll) – 20th July 2025

This last week has seen the most data in one week since the new GHB dropped. With that amount of data, it was surprising to see how little the win rates changed from last week:

The biggest winners this week appear to be Idoneth Deepkin increasing by 6%, Flesh-eater Courts increasing by 5% and Soulblight Gravelords increasing by 4%.

Our biggest losers this week were Fyreslayers losing 9% off their win rate, followed by Disciples of Tzeentch and Ironjawz who both fell 5%. Gloomspite Gitz can also count themselves among the unlucky few with a drop of 4%.

All the other factions stayed within 2% of their previous win rate.

Neil Addleman: We are still early in the meta, but there appears to be some definite trends forming. Seven total armies are above the 55% threshold, and while some were expected factions, others might surprise some people.

Daughters of Khaine, Cities of Sigmar, and Nighthaunt all had really strong tools added with the Scourge of Ghyran updates. Daughters of Khaine elf builds were already doing pretty well before the updates, Cities of Sigmar also got sizeable points cuts with the battlescroll, and Nighthaunt also got a very powerful terrain piece added. All this meant that these three factions were expected to be top performers going into the new season, and that is certainly shaking up to be the case.

Daughters and Cities seem to be a step above Nighthaunt, though. With the former already having three 5-0 results and eleven 4-1 results, the latter has two and fourteen, respectively. Daughters are even more alarming than that with a whopping 74% of players going 3-2 or better, and 41% of players going 4-1 or better.

The other four top armies also benefit from the Scourge of Ghyran updates and/or points cuts from the battlescroll. Whether it be Kruleboyz with it’s points cuts, new warscrolls, and new battle formation. Or Kharadron Overlords with it’s large points cuts and new boat enhancements. It is pretty clear that the Scourge of Ghyran has had a massive impact on this season.

On the low end, there are five total factions below the 45% mark. Two of them, Khorne and Idoneth Deepkin, either just got a new book or are about to, so their win rate should be taken with a grain of salt. But Seraphon is an interesting case because they were one of the best armies last season. But between the battlescroll putting a cost on their terrain and their most taken spell lore and enhancement, and Kroak possibly suffering from the new obscuring rules, they have fallen all way down to a 43% win rate.

For those of you who are counted among our legendary Patreons, you can download the stats database below which now includes warscroll win rates and lists.

On top of this there is some added extras in the form of a faction dive into Seraphon.

Rules Roundup: 20th July

Our wonderful and friendly discord has a channel designed to take your questions! Sometimes GW’s FAQs are slow to be updated, and rules are either unclear or simply not phrased well for non-English speakers. To that end, we have an excellent team of lawyers on hand to interpret the rules and answer questions you might have.

Below are the questions that were asked over the last 7 days from our discord server and the answers provided by our legal department*:

Q: Can Krethusa revive Morathi?
A: Yes, but not the Shadow Queen. Morathi would essentially take damage like a normal unit, but it’s a way of getting a good caster back in the late game.

Q: Can you get multiple instances of +1 to Hit?
A: You can, but you cannot benefit from more than one. You could have 5 different sources of +1 to Hit, but you’re still only going to benefit from a single instance. Multiple sources of +1 are only good for countering you opponent’s -1 to Hit, should that exist. (e.g. if you had +2 to Hit and your opponent gave you -1, you would have +1 to hit. If you had +2 to hit but no penalties, you would have +1 to Hit.)

Q: If a unit has Strike-First, what happens if an opponent’s ability gives them Strike-Last?
A: The two abilities will cancel out. This is shown in the Core Rules, section 19.0.

Q: If a Beast of Nurgle is killed and then replaced, can Horticulous replace that Beast when it dies?
A: No. Replacement units cannot be replaced.

Q: How does the weapon ability [SHOOT IN COMBAT] work?
A: The unit can still use that ranged weapon to make attacks in the shooting phase if it is in combat with a unit (which normally would not be allowed). The attacking unit can only target the unit it is in combat with.

*Please note that the “legal department” is a joke. None of these people are lawyers, cannot provide real legal advice, and are not representing themselves as lawyers. This shouldn’t have to be said, but US law is dumb so there’s the disclaimer. Don’t come after us.

The Old World Matched Play Guide

First the huge Errata and Faq drop and now we get the much anticipated Matched Play Guide! The Old World’s answer to the General’s Handbook. Another little quality of life addition we have all been yelling for. All along with the buzz of Cathay on the same day?! It is a good day to be an Old World player. So what do we have here and does it live up to all the hype?

Before we continue, just a gentle reminder that we have an affiliation with Element Games, where you can buy the Old World Matched Play Guide for £14.02 (15% off RRP). It also gives a little kick back to the site too!

Let us start at the very beginning since it is the most important part I believe. One of the very first sentences is “the Old World is a game that thrives upon narrative”. Shots fired! It is true though. Majority of the games I have played and have seen played, are not what we hear complaints about. People aren’t going to casual matches and throwing out 2 dragons, tons of Pegasus Knights, Dragon Ogre spam, etc. The vast majority of players actually do not need this book. It goes on to talk about matched play and tournament play and the joys of a high competitive level and how this book can enhance that. This is not to say this book is solely for tournaments or high level play. The casual player can enjoy this book and it’s scenarios and objectives just as much, but it definitely does a lot to control a lot of the feel bad lists that are out there, or at least tries to.

Let’s skip ahead to the organizing the event section. This part details just about everything you would need to, well, organize an event. From the organizer, to referees, to the players, and everything in between. They even awkwardly note that players “must” use official games workshop and forge world miniatures, but I guess that would really be up to the Tournament Organizer (TO). There is also a section on pairing players and how to pair them in rounds after the first round, as well as the usage of a spare player if there is one.

On to the controversial part of the book. They do add a tournament points table. It calculates how many points each player will score a round from 0 for a crushing defeat to 6 for a crushing victory. These are based on the size of the game and the difference in victory points. You often see tournament points based on a scale from 0-20 because of the range of scores, so this is wildly different than many of the standard methods currently used. It does provide an easy way to do this for those running their first tournament and we will have to see if this new table causes any headaches for TOs running events that a 0-20 point system might alleviate.

Now we come to what people have been homebrewing for a year now. Army composition. They have laid out 3 different universal compositions but aren’t super clear how to use them. The first is Open War which is basically the rule book with no comps at all. This is important to note that we don’t have to comp every game or every tournament with this book being released. We also have Grand Melee which has been commonly used by many already and limits a single unit to only be 25% or less of the total points. Sucks to be Warriors of Chaos players that bought a Lord on Dragon in this world. This also affects units as well, so Death Star units also take a hit here too. Casters are also capped at 1 level 4 per 2000 points and 1 level 3 per 1000 points. The other comp is Combined Arms and this one limits the number of the same unit you can take with max 3 for characters, 4 for core, 3 for special, and 2 for rare. The army rule overrides this, but these keep units with no restrictions from getting spammed.  It is obviously up to the TO but I imagine you can use one or even both of these 2 new ones concurrently, but I do like that there is a universal set that people can just reference when a tournament says they are using Open War or Grand Melee and Combined Arms. Hopefully these are enough, and we don’t have to see a lot of other homebrew comps coming up anymore, but time will tell if the rules changes and this book will have fixed the need for heavy comps in tournaments.

They touch on the terrain and battlefield and deploying but we won’t go into that. They do lay out 3 different game length rules. Fixed turn is a 6-round game, random game length is rolling after the 5th round and adding a dice where the game ends when you roll a 10, and break point where the game ends when an army goes below 25% total Unit Strength. This allows for easy mixing and matching of rules to create a tournament pack.

It also goes through common objectives and VP scored. Many of these are the same as the main rulebook. One that was in the errata and now here, is the addition of gaining VP of half of the points for a unit at 25% of its starting wounds. Now keeping that dragon alive with 1 wound doesn’t deny 500 VP anymore. They also add that you get 500 VP for breaking the opponent through the Break Point game length so basically get that extra 500 VP for the stuff that was still alive when the game ended.

Here is the bread and butter of the book. They added 6 scenarios. They are pretty cool, and I will not go through them all. Buy the book or find some leaks but they look quite fun. The main part is that they each recommend certain game lengths, have their own scenario special rules for most of them, and have recommended secondary objectives. This makes it easy for a TO setting up a tournament or even casual players rolling up a scenario, to determine the best ways to play it. Although, we could just as easily pick one not recommended and play that too.

Secondary objectives are the part of the game that will change it the most, and can be picked for any scenario. The first one, baggage train, requires you to defend a baggage train and capture or destroy your opponents for VP. Next, special features are like the main rulebook but have unusual properties that are rules you will roll for at the start of the turn that offer benefits, as well as the VP you get for controlling it. Domination is basically controlling a table quarter with more Unit Strength than your opponent for VP, which was actually a standard way to score VP in every game back in older Warhammer Fantasy Battles editions. Lastly there is Strategic Locations (x). If you’ve played Age of Sigmar or 40k you know these. These are objectives on the table and (X) can range from 2-4 objective markers to control. Now here is the caveat for most of these, outside of domination. To control something, it has to be a core unit and it has to be unit strength 10 or greater. If you want to score secondary objectives, you will have to bring and utilize your core units. Will this be enough to get players to stop referring to a “Core Tax” like it is a bad thing and want to take more core units to score? This is another time will tell kind of thing, but I hope it does add variety to list building and maybe keep people from trying to keep their core units as close to the minimum as possible.

The final way they added VP to be scored is from secret objectives. These hold up to their name since they get a couple paragraphs and are on the last page of the book so they are quite secret. That is unfortunate because I think that these are one of the coolest things that they added. There are 12 different secret objectives that reward VP for completing. When you write your muster list for a tournament you pick 6 of them. When you battle you can choose one to try to complete for that game and you can’t use it again for the event. So, a 5 round GT, you bring 6 and use 5. I absolutely love this rule and will be encouraging its use for any tournament I go to and will even be implementing it in my escalation league.

There are also rules for doubles events and how to run those including army composition and minor rules changes. They also have 3 scenarios to use for a doubles event, and these also use the same secondary objectives as the single player games. There are also rules for team events with how to match using vanguard, battleline, and rearguard assignments for team play. This is actually a really cool system so check it out and spread the word and hopefully teams become popular in The Old World like it is in 40k because I would love to try this!

All said and done, I am not disappointed in this book. The ease of being able to set up a tournament or league where you can just say we are playing scenario 2 at 2000 points, using Grand Melee and Combined Arms, with secondary objectives baggage trains and special features is incredibly convenient and easy to do. I do like this for casual and tournament players alike and recommend picking it up. Will this fix all of The Old World’s problems alongside the Errata? I will be keeping a close eye on the meta to find out but at the bare minimum, it makes it feel like a fresh new game.

Now that we got this book out of the way, though. Let’s give us what we really want. A narrative campaign book!
