Hobby Update – Allor

Those of you who are familiar with our YouTube channel may remember that I started a Grudge ringer army some time ago. This was meant as an homage to my favourite video game of the 90’s ‘Shadow of the Horned Rat‘.

I’d already painted up Commander Bernhardt back in 2020 as well as some Grudgebringer cavalry and infantry.

I wanted to get Allor the wizard involved in the army as well. For those of you not familiar with the game, here’s his unit card:

Allor

There wasn’t a suitable Warhammer model available so I decided to create the miniature in HeroForge. It’s a great website that you can spend hours on creating your ideal mini! I ordered mine some time ago and have only just got around to painting him after deciding to take a break from painting Kruleboyz.

Allor

I have tried a little OSL but I don’t think I’ve pulled it off. More practice needed.

Here he is with Commander Bernhardt..

I’m pleased with how they’ve both come out.

Top Three AoS Lists from Fantasia Fanatic XLI

Fantasia Fanatic XLI was an 5 game Age of Sigmar tournament that took place in Sweden this weekend just past. It saw 33 players fighting to be crowned Champion.

1st Ronya Andersson – Nighthaunt

Ronya won four games and drew one with the older Nighthaunt book! Drawing in the first round against Lumineth Realm-Lords/Iliatha, then going on to beat Daughters of Khaine/Khelt Nar in Round 2, Seraphon/Thunder Lizard in Round 3, Maggotkin of Nurgle/Munificent Wanderers in Round 4 and Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar in Round 5.

Declan – Wow… Ronya take a bow. Not even a suggestion of doing this the easy way either, with 2 Black Coaches (not the best units in the game to put it mildly), and against 5 armies all in the top half of the stats.

There’s even more credit for taking the Hexwraiths because no matter whether they are any good in the game I’ve never been able to find out – I assembled 5 of them, and wanted to kill the person who designed their fit! It’s awful. So double congratulations for running 25 of them!

2nd Alexis Herbeck – Stormcast Eternals

Alexis won 4 games and lost 1. Beating Blades of Khorne/Reapers of Vengeance in round 1, Soulblight Gravelords/Vyrkos Dynasty in round 2, Cities of Sigmar/Living Cityin round 3 and Seraphon/Dracothion’s Tail in round 4 before losing against Ronya Andersson and their Nighthaunt/Emerald host list in round 5.

Prime Targets making little difference with this army as if you can’t kill them in the first place the fabled extra point is making no difference at all.

This is no criticism of Alexis – it’s in the book; it’s legal – take it!

3rd Per Sigvallius – Cities of Sigmar

Per also managed four wins and a single loss. Beating Idoneth Deepkin/Ionrach in round 1, Fyreslayers/Greyfyrd in round 2. then losing against the Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar of 2nd place Alexis in round 3, before going on to beat Soulblight Gravelords/Vyrkos Dynasty in round 4 and Seraphon/Thunder Lizards in round 5.

Declan – I really like Cities of Sigmar lists, because it reminds me of my days playing Empire in Warhammer Fantasy, and I still have an army for Warmaster… so hark back to the good days of Crossbowmen and Halberdiers – all mono-pose.

Per has gone with a ‘not Cities’ Cities list like many before him though with 4 Dragons in one unit and 4 Dracothian Guard. At 1,120 points for these Stormcast units, it is a Stormcast army… just with some cheap units to back it up.

And the 30 Crossbows dish out damage – shorter range than the longstrikes and not as common, but ignore them at your peril – and that’s why this army works. Target priority… all of it good … and you want to kill it all. I don’t know what I’d go for first, but probably the Dragons to get a few points on the board before Per steamrollers the rest through!

Well done on a 4-1 — this needs to be piloted and practiced with.

Horus Heresy 2nd Edition: Which Legion are you?

A few of us at Woehammer are getting a little hyped for the new Horus Heresy edition. As such, we decided to do the choose your legion series of questions on theHorusHeresy.com

Peter

I’m a massive Blood Angels fan and have been ever since I first got into the hobby. However, since reading the first few books in the Horus Heresy series I developed a love of the Luna Wolves.

That being said, the Luna Wolves were renamed the Sons of Horus by the time of the Horus Heresy. So how would I go about creating an army in this style? There’s two options here, the first is to simply say that loyalist Sons of Horus somehow survived Horus’s purge and turned their back on the Primarch by returning their colours to that of the Luna Wolves. The second option is to claim that these particular Luna Wolves were left as a standing guard to ensure compliance of a particular planet and were somehow forgotten by their brethren. I’m more inclined by the second option as it leaves a question mark as to whether they are loyal or traitor….

Luna Wolves by Taleofpainters.com

Steve

An easy choice for me, my 40k chapter of choice and the one that I am currently painting and playing with is the Crimson Fists. Therefore, a Horus Heresy project would have to be based on a force commanded by Alexis Polox, the Crimson Fist, first Chapter master of the Crimson Fists. During the Great Crusade, Polux became one of Rogal Dorn’s most senior captains, rising to his advisory council, the “Stone Men.”

Captain Polox led primarch Dorn’s Retribution Fleet at the Battle of the Phall system against the Iron warriors. After the battle Polox with the remains of his company found themselves at Macragge.

After the Heresy, and the splitting of the Legions, Polox was the chapter master of the newly formed Crimson Fists chapter and led them for 800 years,

My HH force would be based around Captain Polox and his Imperial Fists Legion’s 405th Company.

Dave

I am a terrible hobby butterfly, so this was a bit trickier for me. I have previously played both Space Wolves and Ultramarines in 40K and (briefly) started an Imperial Fists army when I got back into 9th Edition. I took the big quiz and realised it was fairly clear it was going to end up with either Imperial Fists or Iron Warriors but did I really want to dive back into Imperial Fists again….?

Imperial Fists were tempting because the main thing which had put me off in 40k was the fact that my favourite units tended to be a bit (OK, a lot) pants, this could be remedied in Horus Heresy because I really liked the older marine sculpts. Then I remembered “Storm of Iron”. It’s an absolute classic in the 40K literature from Graham McNeill, with Iron Warriors and lots of cannon fodder Traitor Guard besieging an Imperial fortress. I shan’t properly review it here or give spoilers but it’s great fun and 100% worth a read. Well, I now have a Renegades and Heretics army for 40K and I could happily recreate a late Heresy army with them and some nice new Iron Warrior friends (aaahhh friend…..I’m hoping the rules will allow this sort of mixing).

Bonus points being if Pete and Steve are playing Loyalists I will relish having a bit of banter, especially with Steve and his Fists. I think I will enjoy playing the bad guy and truly hope there’s some sort of special rule which allows me to shell my own troops for the lulz.

So, it’s time to set up a direct debit for Iron Warriors paint, develop some fairly serious daddy-issues and prepare my crusade to liberate the galaxy from the scourge of the False-Emperor.

Iron Within, Iron Without!

Declan

Blood Angels for me all the way – they were my first chapter – and not at all picked because they were all red – but I’ve never not liked them as I began to read around the fluff I liked them even more.

One of the first White Dwarf’s I ever bought has the iconic black and white drawing of Horus & the Emperor facing off and Sanguinius dead and their feet, have inflicted the damage that would be Horus’ downfall. And that is how I see the Blood Angels. Perfect… flawed and willing to die for the right of the Imperium — and kill anything that stands up to it.

I’ve painted a few armies in my time but I don’t play 40k anymore so pictures are more limited – and all the models packed away. If you’re nice to Peter in the future maybe he’ll get me to show you some photos… I even have an army mostly made up of RTB001 models — yes I am that old!

Leagues of Votann – A Wish List

29 years.

That’s how long a lot of people, including myself, have had to wait for this announcement.

Yes, they’ve had a (understandable) name change, but they’re still the same Space Dwarfs we know and love.

The model looks great too! This particular fellow is just a lowly trooper so I’m looking forward to what the rest of the army looks like.

Everyone who’s waited has a wishlist for the models and rules, so I thought I would cover a few of my own…

Armour Save (3+)

Hear me out. I suspect we’ll get given 4+ but fluff-wise and by the looks of the trooper a 3+ is believable. Lore wise these chaps came out of the Age of Strife with more tech than the rest of Humankind, so while Humans have their power armour surely the Leagues will have their own?

Trikes

I’d like to see the Trikes come back but maybe not in such a Hell’s Angels vibe or in such numbers as their last iteration. Perhaps as an equivalent of Space Marine outriders.

Termites

I can imagine some tasty rules where units of Space Dwarfs are deployed by tunnelling machines behind enemy lines. Much like the Astra Militarum Termites. The Squats in Epic 40k had them….

Overlord Airship

You may remember this from Epic 40k, wouldn’t it be cool to have this as a Lord of War option?

Melee Specialists

Rather than making them expert marksmen, I’d rather have these guys as CC experts with rapid deployment options.

Exo-Armour/Hearthguard

I’d have no problem with these being combined into a single unit as long as they look decent. Possibly with some tasty power axes and a 2+ save.

There you have it, that’s my wish list. What would you add to this?

The following have been added from comments on Twitter and below

Tyranid Hunters

A Xenos Hunter unit with bonuses versus Tyranids, or at least a subfaction with something like that.

Teleport Unit

Something on a slow tracked vehicle that can teleport an infantry unit a turn in LoS so playing infantry heavy is viable but a risk.

Mole Mortars

Probably with a negative movement effect on affected units
Some sort of orbital bombardment mechanic, probably triggered by a trike s
A Leviathan Lord of war
In Epic, squats had Rhinos but it would be nice if they had a different transport (or maybe none and they rely purely on trikes and teleport effects from slow vehicles).
Everyone to start calling them Sporfs.

Hobby Goals 2022 – April Update!

Somehow we’re three months through 2022, and British Summer Time is already upon us. This tends to mean that I try to spend a little more time outside – reading, painting and walking. And so Hobby switches a little to other priorities, but Toy Soldiers is always on the agenda.

In January I wrote an article on some Hobby Goals for 2022 in an attempt to get some progress made and complete some projects.

So – how am I getting on?

1) General – Hobby Bingo

Peter has been keeping us honest with our Hobby Bingo and I completed 4 items up to end Feb, but I’ve had a bit of a painting catch-up in March with some Kruleboyz which I painted to help Peter with his army requirements! So whilst I am not at the 25 required (yet) I am still on course to complete it!

2) Painting – Finish a Trogg Army

Not so much progress made here – which is to say none. When I put this as a Hobby Goal I was anticipating that the Gloompsite Gitz would get a new book soon as one of the worst performing factions in Age of Sigmar three – having been hit with a number of rules changes which adversely impacted their playstyle. But alas Gitz are not on the release schedule and with no White Dwarf article in sight I’m feeling a little deflated.

I have at least finished Kragnos, so I can bring him in if needed, but I want Gitz to be able to compete on their own!

Kragnos is the only model I’ve painted for ‘Gitz’ in 2022!

3) Gaming – Get two 4-1 results in 2022

If the Troggs is a story of disappointed, this is one of celebration. I got a 4-1 at March to War (Purple Sparkly Unicorns) in January with Big Waaagh which was a great start to the year and this aim, but that was over-shadowed by a 5-0 at Dazmaul tournament a few weekends ago also with Big Waaagh! So a big tick against this one – and it’s only April!

4) Painting – A Full Vampire Counts army for Warmaster

There’s always going to be some aims with less success than others, and this is like the Troggs – not quite got started! I have painted a little Warmaster – but Squigs. So this one still needs work this year.

They’re 10mm, but not Vampire Counts!

5) Gaming – Play more Warmaster

Having played only 8 games in 2021, I have played in 8 in 2022 in the first 3 months, helped by the Tri-Wiz event and a regular monthly meet up at a local gaming store – Battlefield Hobbies, Daventry. If you’re in the Midlands and want more Warmaster give me a yell and I’ll get you on the WhatsApp Group.

I’m still using my Goblins and enjoying all the games with them – the horde definitely has potential in Warmaster and I’m learning all the time. Great fun!

6) Painting – Astra Militarum Force

Less success here, but I have found some models I painted in the past… will need to get Apothecary White on them to bring them back to the right standard, but it’s nice to know I have some infantry partially painted.

7) Painting – Snotling team

No progress to report… sorry Gitz!

8) Painting – Necromunda Van Saar

No progress to report… sorry lads!

9) Gaming – Non Competitive

With RAW announcing recently that they are hanging up their organising gloves, I’ve signed up to narrative event with Warhammer Witney, which I am really looking forward to. Do need to do prep, but definitely taking my Squigs with me for a bit of fun!

10) Clear the Pile of Potential

Not necessarily helped by some prizes from recent tournaments, but I’ve not bought any toys for Warhammer since December, and have painted 3 of the 6 squig herds for Warmaster I got. So, Pile of Potential has reduced!

11) Get my terrain on bases for use in games

I’ve found out others use a jigsaw for this, but I must admit I’m a bit wary as I’m not the most practical person. Am considering if there are other options available but still definitely on the ‘want to do’.

12) Writing – maintain the blog.

I think it’s fair to say that this one is going well. Peter will be updating you all on the progress of the Blog in April but needless to say that we are both amazed and very happy with the number of visitors we are getting for all our content from Hobby, painting & collecting, all the way to tournament results and our popular ‘Top Three’ series.

Overall a great start, with a superb result for my gaming goal. Still can’t believe I won a tournament 5-0 since playing for 20 years in tournaments of various types! Definitely a highlight.

It would be great to know how your Hobby Goals are doing for 2022.

Book Review – Sharpe’s Assassin

Book 22 by Bernard Cornwell

Welcome to Woehammer – have you noticed the lovely feeling of no adverts (ads), no pop-ups and no auto-playing videos? Well, that’s the norm here at Woehammer.

But this is only possible because of our wonderful Patreons. So, some articles over 1 year old will now display our Patreon request at the top of the article… like this one! Don’t worry, we are not adding ads – but if you can afford to donate to the site, we would definitely appreciate it. Membership is available from just £1/month (plus taxes!!)

As I have recently been reading through Gaunt’s Ghosts recently by Dan Abnett, which is effectively Sharpe in space… and then Cornwell released a new book in the Sharpe series… so I rushed out and grabbed it.

The cover…!

From the book:

SHARPE IS BACK. Outsider. Hero. Rogue. And the one man you want on your side.

If any man can do the impossible it’s Richard Sharpe . . .

Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe is a man with a reputation. Born in the gutter, raised a foundling, he joined the army twenty-one years ago, and it’s been his home ever since. He’s a loose cannon, but his unconventional methods make him a valuable weapon.

So when, the dust still settling after the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington needs a favour, he turns to Sharpe. For Wellington knows that the end of one war is only the beginning of another. Napoleon’s army may be defeated, but another enemy lies waiting in the shadows – a secretive group of fanatical revolutionaries hell-bent on revenge.

Sharpe is dispatched to a new battleground: the maze of Paris streets where lines blur between friend and foe. And in search of a spy, he will have to defeat a lethal assassin determined to kill his target or die trying . . .

Sharpe is back… in France and fighting the French after Waterloo. And it’s all page turning stuff of the best traditions of the previous books.

Sharpe is of course joined by his two constant companions – Sergeant Harper, and Sergeant Harper’s volley gun – as together they search France for missing artwork and for a plot to assassinate the Duke of Wellington.

…but is a triumphant return? – in short, yes! As a fan of Sharpe (this is the reason I’m interested in the Napoleonic era) its a great addition to the series, and its good fun to be back following the characters. Cornwell even throws in a small set-piece battle or two just to get the juices flowing before the heroes go to France searching for the Fraternity – a group of French soldiers dedicated to avenging Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo.

Its a great fun story, a page turner, and definitely won’t be a classic of the genre, but if you’ve read other Sharpe’s then you’ll definitely want to pick this one up… if you’ve never read Sharpe then start at the beginning with Sharpe’s Eagle!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

We always encourage people to shop at local bricks and mortar stores, but if your friendly local book store doesn’t have this available, we have a UK Amazon affiliate link & a USA Amazon affiliate link for which Woehammer receives a small commission.

Hobby Update – Kragnos

I’ve finished him, finally! Kragnos is a great model despite being more Beasts of Chaos than Destruction, and I’ve had him half-finished on a painting table since before Christmas.

I brought him to an event at The Honest Wargamer’s venue in Nottingham last year before his warscroll change and lost all three games… grabbing a wooden spoon (or sticker!), and it put me off finishing him to the standard of the rest of my army.

With the Battle of the Burning Skies last weekend a clubmate – Tom – asked if he could borrow him, and so I took the opportunity to finish the chap off… and clear another partially completed model from the to-do list. Cheers for the push there Tom.

He’s a big lad – helped by his Hero Stone… must be a chore to lug around.

Regular readers will know that all my monsters (or more accurately no Greenskin models) are painted in red in my Destruction forces and so I could paint Kragnos to fit in with the style of all my toys – allowing him to be used in Sons of Behemat, Orruk Warclans, Gloomspite Gitz and Ogor Mawtribes if I so wish.

This makes him perhaps my most versatile model… although I’ve not yet used his new warscroll.

A Shield… of Protection!
For Games Workshop App (Age of Sigmar)

You can see from the above that he hits hard… very hard. Rend 3, Damage 4 and easy access to +1 to hit means his Dread Mace is clearing the way for whatever else is in the army, and the other weapons help get more damage. In fact he is more damaging than a Maw Krusha without Violent Fury so definitely worth thinking about in some of my armies.

Bright, ‘Anime’ Hair and lots of Verdigris

I’ve painted his hair with Tallasar Blue (Contrast Paint), which is such a lovely vibrant colour although some of the tips can wear off a little. An initial undercoat of Black should mean that not too many errors show through.

The Brass/Bronze is lashed with as much Nihilakh Oxide I could find – I love the affect it gives, and the bright contast with the brown of the Bronze – really brings the ‘under ground’ vibe to the fore.

That’s it for March, but I’ve got some Gutrippas on the painting table for April which I hope to get some paint on in the next few weeks, and then we’ll see what’s next.

It’d be great to see if you’ve done a Kragnos – so many great paint jobs out there for him.
