Tale of Wargamers – Introduction

What is a Tale of Wargamers?

Back in the mid 90’s when I was first getting into Warhammer and wargaming in a big way there used to be an article called ‘A Tale of Wargamers’ in the White Dwarf. The premise was simple, each person had a budget of £25 and spent that each month on expanding their army.

I thought it would be great to try and do this again in the current day and age. But also, we’re making it even harder for ourselves! What if we approached this as though we had never bought any models, paints or brushes before?! As in, what should a complete beginner look at purchasing and where from?!

So, if you’re a beginner to Warhammer or in fact any wargaming system (not just Games Workshop), then you may find this series interesting and useful. For those a bit more long in the tooth, you may just find this plain entertaining!

The Rules

As there are a few members of the team taking part in the Tale of Wargamers from all corners of the globe we first had to agree the limits.

  • UK based members have £25 GBP
  • US based members have $35 USD
  • Australian based members have $65 AUD
  • Rest of Europe have €30

You can use independent retailers, Amazon (I wouldn’t, but you could….) or Games Workshop for your supplies of tools, paints and models. Preferably eBay should be avoided as prices can be difficult to replicate.

Anything that isn’t spent in one month can be carried over to the next. You CANNOT spend more than the budget allows.

Finally, purchasing 3D miniature prints from a vendor on Etsy or similar is fine, however, we are banned from using our own printers for his purpose.

Warhammer Fantasy and Oldhammer Players

If you’ve already got a large collection of miniatures but want to take part, then use the budget as normal and consider each set of 10 models/artillery or similar to cost £25 and a hero/character to cost £15. Then purchase the paints etc as normal. I.e. you have a set of 10 Trollslayers in your pile of shame. Deduct £25 from your budget and paint them up.

I’m not going to lie, we think it’s going to be tough, but it is doable! And don’t worry, none of us will be resorting to using PVA glue to stick our models together!

Book Review – Shamanslayer

Book 11 in Gotrek & Felix Series – by Nathan Long

Gotrek and Felix have been on many adventures in the World that Was started by William King whose mantel Nathan Long has taken up. In Book 11, they must stop a Shaman from destroying the Empire!

Shamanslayer by Nathan Long

From the book:

Dwarf Trollslayer Gotrek and his human companion Felix Jaeger, Warhammer’s most famous pair of heroes, head off to a new adventure in the latest novel of this best-selling fantasy series against a horde of beastmen who threaten the safety of the Empire.

The horde are moving a Herdstone to the centre of the Empire in order to unleash it’s magic. Magic which turns those near to it into Beasts as well. Will Gotrek & Felix be able to prevent the Shaman and save the Empire from this latest, grave threat?

At book 11, the Gotrek and Felix books are really morphing into the Felix and Gotrek books. This is not surprising as Gotrek developed by William King was already a full character with Felix being more of a sidekick. Nathan Long’s stories have development for Felix (because the only real development for Gotrek is to die!), and it’s good to see.

The story flies along, with a character returning from previous books and Felix must prove that he a worthy wielder of his sword. It has everything you’ll know from the previous books with swords and arrows flying, death all around and Gotrek and Felix at the centre of the storm and all the events.

Despite the death of the World that Was, Gotrek novels set in the Old-World are still great reads, and I would still recommend reading them if you haven’t before.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Hobby Update – Allor

Those of you who are familiar with our YouTube channel may remember that I started a Grudge ringer army some time ago. This was meant as an homage to my favourite video game of the 90’s ‘Shadow of the Horned Rat‘.

I’d already painted up Commander Bernhardt back in 2020 as well as some Grudgebringer cavalry and infantry.

I wanted to get Allor the wizard involved in the army as well. For those of you not familiar with the game, here’s his unit card:

Allor

There wasn’t a suitable Warhammer model available so I decided to create the miniature in HeroForge. It’s a great website that you can spend hours on creating your ideal mini! I ordered mine some time ago and have only just got around to painting him after deciding to take a break from painting Kruleboyz.

Allor

I have tried a little OSL but I don’t think I’ve pulled it off. More practice needed.

Here he is with Commander Bernhardt..

I’m pleased with how they’ve both come out.

What is Age of Sigmar?

After Declan’s great article on getting started with Warmaster, we decided to perhaps turn this into a little series. So today I bring you getting started in Age of Sigmar!

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar is a skirmish tabletop game for two or more players where you command several armies from a huge range that goes from Humans, Dwarves, High Elves, Undead Vampires, Orcs, Beastman and lots of races. This book provides you with all the rules you need to play, and guides you through collecting and painting your own army of Citadel miniatures.

It has been given a rating of 6.7 on BoardGameGeek from 600+ ratings.

Games Workshop has produced a number of videos explaining how to play Age of Sigmar.

1. Introduction

2. Overview

3. Warscrolls

4. Hero Phase

5. Movement Phase

6. Shooting Phase

7. Charge Phase

8. Combat Phase

9. Battleshock Phase

As this is a Games Workshop game, there are tonnes of support and websites out there dedicated to the Age of Sigmar. Some of my favourites include:

Warscroll Builder (Allowing you to make lists quickly)
The Honest Wargamer Scorecard
Cheatsheet

Warhammer Fantasy Dwarfs

About a month ago, the legend that is Dave invited me to play a few games of Warhammer Fantasy with him in the coming year. I jumped at the opportunity, and what better army to play with than my old Dwarfs!

I’ve always had a soft spot for these boys ever since I started in Warhammer way back in 93′.

This would also be the perfect opportunity for me to start rebasing them back on to their proper SQUARE bases as is only right! It also means that by the time Old World gets released I may have a fully painted and functional army from the off!

We’re starting out in Fantasy with the Grudge of Drong as Dave has previously mentioned, and for the first battle in the series I need to muster a small force of 1,500 points.

The first battle takes place in Grudge Pass as an Elven force blocks the road to advancing Dwarfs looking to topple Queen Helga from her throne whom the Elves have allied themselves with.

In this case, Dave is replacing the Elves and using his old Empire army. However, I will be using the Dwarfs. The suggested order of battle is below, but this is a 5th edition campaign box and we’re going be playing with 8th edition rules so I will need to adjust this slightly.

We’re going to be using 8th Edition rules, so my force will look something like this:

  • Dwarf Lord
  • Master Engineer
  • Runesmith
  • Battle Standard Bearer
  • 15 Warriors
  • 10 Warriors
  • 10 Longbeards
  • 10 Thunderers
  • 10 Ironbreakers
  • 10 Miners
  • 10 Miners

This is by no means a competitive army , but then its not meant to be as this is a narrative campaign and we’re playing to act a story out rather than attempting to table our opponent.

Some of these models are already painted, they just need rebasing!

I’ve still a fair whack to get through as well as rebasing the above models!

Battle of the Burning Skies

So I’m biting the bullet and diving into my first tournament since 1999….. Yes I’m that old.

I’m attending the Battle of the Burning Skies in Northamptonshire on 26th March. Tickets for which are available here. The tournament has been organised jointly between the fantastic peeps at both Savage Hammer Gaming and Greetings from the Warp.

It’s a 2,000 point the day event of AoS.

I’m a little rusty with AoS having only played one game against my A.I. ruleset in 3rd. One game in 2nd and a few in the first edition. Time to get some practice in.

I own three armies for AoS, Cities of Sigmar, Kharadron Overlords and Kruleboyz. I’m going to go with Kruleboyz as they’re probably the most competitive out of the three and I don’t want to be spanked in every game by taking my pure old school Dispossessed list.

So my list?

Well this is my first draft after some consultation with @rightangle79. And will in all likelihood get changed as the tournament draws closer.
