The aggressive, metal-on-metal WARMACHINE game is set in the Iron Kingdoms, an environment that combines the richness of traditional fantasy with the excitement of steam power and gunpowder. Across the realm, ancient rivalries among nations are exploding into all-out conflict, setting the stage for WARMACHINE and other Iron Kingdom products.

In this 30 mm tabletop miniatures battle game, each player controls an elite soldier-sorcerer who leads an army into battle to fight for king, country, or simply coin. These warcasters are formidable and experienced combatants, and the warjacks they control represent the pinnacle of military might in the Iron Kingdoms.

WARMACHINE puts players directly onto the battlefield as warcasters and their armies clash. A game is fought with the thundering cannons, ripping iron claws, and crushing hammer blows of the giant steam-powered warjacks as well as the devastating spells wrought by the warcasters themselves and the lethal weapons of their warriors. When the dust settles, one side is victorious—and the other is nothing but smoking scrap metal!

Privateer Press have done a great introductory video to Warmachine, after which I’ve also included a Battle Report from Ash at Guerilla Miniatures because I find these very enjoyable to watch.

Tournament Preparation – Tri-Wiz (One Day – Warmaster)

There are a few more Warmaster tournaments being run in the UK at the moment, with resin armies being a great way for players to get back into Warmaster (or to play it for the first time).

Welcome to Woehammer – have you noticed the lovely feeling of no adverts (ads), no pop-ups and no auto-playing videos? Well, that’s the norm here at Woehammer.

But this is only possible because of our wonderful Patreons. So, some articles over 1 year old will now display our Patreon request at the top of the article… like this one! Don’t worry, we are not adding ads – but if you can afford to donate to the site, we would definitely appreciate it. Membership is available from just £1/month (plus taxes!!)

Saffron Walden (just south of Cambridge) is a long-running tournament ran by Janners and Jim the Gent and had been growing before COVID interupted the world. Well it was back on Saturday and I planned to take along my Goblins. But what to take…?

From the Tri-Wiz Facebook page

For me Goblins need to be a horde army, and Warmaster delivers this option in spades. I’d also recently got some new squigs and painted them up for the tournament (more on those in a future Hobby Update) and so came up with this.

Created by the Warmaster Army Builder webpage

Characters

The army is led by nine (9!) characters because Goblins fail command rolls a lot… and I mean a lot! So I’ve got a general (only command 8), 4 Heroes (2 riding Wyverns) and 4 Shamans (1 with a Scroll of Dispelling). The Wyverns are really the force multipliers here; being able to add 3 attacks to a combat and potentially reduce your opponent’s attacks due to terror is great – and with 100cm move they can wiz from one side of the battle line to the other reasonably easy.

The shamans bring a number of spells not available in most armies (most are limited to 2 wizards) and the fantasic Gerroff (move opponent’s units backwards) and Waaagh (extra attacks for Goblins and characters) can bring some unexpected punch or annoyance for the army.

Units – Goblins and Squig Herds

Warmaster games at Tri-Wiz would be timed or break point only, so I needed to ensure I could afford to lose units – to this end I brought 10 Goblins and 9 Squigs. For 30 points each these are a great way to get the break point to a good high level, and they can do some damage in combat – the Squigs especially are great value although the lack of armour can mean that an opponent rolling well will beat you in combats. Trust to the dice!

Units – Trolls

Although very expensive in a horde army and with -1 command in an army with shockingly low command the Trolls a much needed punch unit. With 5 attacks, 5+ save and a small regeneration ability they will cause a lot of mayhem and still only count as one break point. I’ve learnt with Trolls to only expect them to charge on initative though, so you are often limited in what you can charge – but when you succeeed with an order they will often steam roller anything in the game.

Units – Wolf Riders

I find 6 units of Wolf Riders to be the perfect number – they can harrass and their abilty to evade in any direction and set up more shooting is great – however the recent changes to fast cavalry rules mean that they can now be pursued by other cavalry, and so I would need to be more careful with them than previously.

Units – Pump Wagon

These little terrors don’t count towards break but at 50 points they are expensive… so I take one to cause people to think – Some goblins players take lots of them and do multiple charges into the same unit; however with D6 attacks (+2 for charge in open) they are the epitomy of dice; and I don’t always roll well – 1 is fun though and very Goblin themed.

Units – Spear Chukkas

The Goblin army is also allowed 4 units of Spear Chukkas but I think this is too many for the points, and so I just take 2. This is enough to cause significant damage to units in column (12 attacks) with no armour save allowed and can even scare off cavalry (8 attacks), with a good range (40cm). They suffer that if an opponent can kill my 2; they can easily kill another 2, which is a lot of easy break.

I’ll let you know how I got on later in the week! Happy Warmastering.

Top Three AoS Lists from GGMaitland Age of Sigmar GT – 5/6th March 2022

GGMaitland Age of Sigmar GT was a five game event that took place in Maitland, Australia on 5th and 6th March. It saw 37 players fight it out to be claimed champion.

The 1st and 3rd Lists (2nd place not available)

1st Ashley McEwan – Sons of Behemat

Ashley won all five games beating Big Waaagh! in Round 1, Blades of Khorne/Reapers of Vengeance in Round 2, Seraphon/Fangs of Sotek in Round 3, Cities of Sigmar in Round 4 and Seraphon/Thunder Lizard in the last round.

Wounds: 129
Drops: 3

Declan – Having been top of the pile at the beginning of AOS3, Sons of Behemat have taken a bit of a hit in the meta as players moved to other Tier S armies. Ashley’s smashing face like its 2021 but with an endless spell and a (virtually) guaranteed triumph.

The Gatekeeper will be doing the smashing, but it’s good to see the two small guys attending as well, who will be helpful for holding objectives. Whilst they are easy to kill individually, you have to make the decision not to shoot / attack the bigger guys instead.

It’s still a good list and Ashley’s done really well to beat two Seraphon lists on his path to victory.

3rd Joel Graham – Big Waaagh!

Joel managed an impressive four wins and one loss, losing against 1st Sons of Behemat/Taker Tribe in Round 1. Then continuing to beat Ogor Mawtribes/Bloodgullet in Round 2, Slaves to Darkness/Despoilers in Round 3, Lumineth Realm-Lords in Round 4 and Daughters of Khaine/Khelt Nar in Round 5.

Artefact

Total: 2000 / 2000
Reinforced Units: 0 / 4
Allies: 0 / 400
Wounds: 93
Drops: 6

Declan – Ah, Big Waaagh! It’s a great allegiance that I love playing but Joel has gone in a very different direction. With three big monsters (Kragnos, Maw Krusha & Gobsprakk), a Warchanter and Wurrgog to keep the points flows. As readers of this blog will know the Wurrgog is a monster if you go within 12″ of him with his stare ability, and Kraggy and Maw Krusha can smash into most foes and do crippling damage, whilst Gobsprakk provides some magic defense.

I really like Big Waaagh because there are so many ways to play it and Joel has gone very differently to my version – and done well.

Wildcard – Jacob Strachan – Lumineth Realm-Lords

Jacob managed to get four wins anda single loss during their weekend and finished 4th. Beating Lumineth Realm-Lords in Round 1, losing against Soulblight Gravelords/Vyrkos Dynasty in Round 2, then beating Sons of Behemat/Taker Tribe in Round 3, Daughters of Khaine/Hagg Nar in Round 4 and Sons of Behemat/Breaker Tribe in the final round.

TOTAL POINTS: 1965/2000

Declan – LRL as a wildcard is an interesting choice from Peter and this one is what I would call a ‘typical’ LRL build. A maximum unit of Sentinels with 30″ no line of sight mortal wound shooting. Meanwhile Severith and the Spirit of the Wind dance around the opponent and are virtually impossible to catch given their ability to move 12″ in both shooting phases (forget redeploy!).

Either surround them, shoot them or hope for the 12″ charge!

Declan – The last swimming attacks before the new book! I don’t play against them often, and with the army about to change significantly… lets just say congratulations and well done to Zenith for giving a right royal send off!

Josh Carroll – Disciples of Tzeentch

Josh managed an impressive four wins and one loss, losing only against 1st placed Zenith and his Idoneth Deepkin/Fuethan in Round 4. Along the way he beat Ironjawz/Blooftoofs in Round 1, Kruleboyz/Big Yellers in Round 2, Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar in Round 3 and Stormcast Eternals/Hallowed Knights in Round 5.

Declan – Ah Tzeentch! Not seen them in a top three recently, but Josh has brought them back with a great 4-1 result. As with many Tzeentch armies this is all about the spells, and pinning the opponent into their deployment with the Soulscream Bridge and the Pink Horrors. Don’t be taken in by that wound count… each pink horror unit is 50 wounds, but only counts as 10 so that’s another 120 wounds to add (or 195 total)… plus summoning!

This is not easy to kill – so how to you fight it; well get on the objectives as quick as you can; have teleports (outside 30″ range) and make sure that you take into account Kairos’ ability to change a die roll – don’t let it cause you to lose a battle tactic!

Ty Gordon – Cities of Sigmar

Like Josh, Ty won four games and lost only to eventual winner Zenith and his Idoneth Deepkin/Fuethan list in Round 5. Along the way he beat the Maggotkin of Nurgle/Befouling Host in Round 1, Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar in Round 3, Nighthaunt/Emerald Host in Round 3 and Flesh-eater courts/Court of Delusion in Round 4.

Declan – The Pheonix ride with 4+ Ward save and very difficult to kill, with the range on the Hurricanum causing mortal wounds at range, and the assassins striking out of the Pheonix Guard units. It’s got a lot of tools, but is not a common or ‘net’ list so it’s good to see something different doing well. The double Frostheart is vicious… I can’t kill one with a Maw Krusha if it’s full health (although a Wurrgog is useful), so although it’s only 106 wounds, this has a lot more effective resistance.

Wildcard – Matthew Kimber – Gloomspite Gitz

Matthew managed to get two wins and two draws during their weekend and finished 8th. Beating Lumineth Realm-Lords/Helon in Round 1, losing against Soulblight Gravelords/Legion of Blood in Round 2, drawing against Sons of Behemat/Taker Tribe in Round 3, beating Stormcast Eternals/Hallowed Knights in Round 4 before drawing against Nighthaunt/Emerald Host in the final round.

TOTAL POINTS: 1950/2000

Declan – 2 wins and 2 draws with Gitz… Great result from Matthew and a great pick from Peter. It is true that Kragnos is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, and – if you can keep him away from mortal wound shooting – he’ll smash through what he charges. The Troggoths can do some damage, and the 5+ ward on the Rockguts is a nice additional defense measure. Whilst the Marshcrawla provides +1 to hit in a huge bubble.

It’s good to see Gitz recovering a little, but they seem to only be able to do this with Kragnos at the moment – it’s a shame the book isn’t good enough on its own!

Tale of Painters – February 21′

February is out of the way already, so it’s time to look at how we’ve all got on at Woehammer with our respective goals and painting pledges this month.

In alphabetical order let’s start with…..

Dave (@hamsfan)

Peter: Dave’s smashed another one of the harder to get ones with Scenery piece for Age of Sigmar. What a piece, absolutely love the dark stone look with this one. Who doesn’t love some heavy weapons team, Lovely mix of two mortars and an Autocannon here, they look just like they’re in the thick of the action.

Declan: Dave has managed to do what I really struggle with – actually getting paint on Imperial Guard / Astra Miliatarum. These guys look like they’ve been in a fight… until you zoom in and get a suprise! The scenery is lovely and dark with lots of blood included. Dave has managed to walk the tight-rope between scenery that looks good, but won’t overshadow the toy-soldiers.

Dave: Some quick and dirty painting on the Guard, I’ve many to do but I’m pleased to get these done. I’ll definitely be using these in a lot of my lists in one form or another. I had the terrain for ages, it’s painted simply but will be great for AoS games. Happy with my progress so far, I’m working on my Minotaur this month but might do a bit of AoS for a break too.

CellExpert Level Goal:Miniature Painted
A4Unit of 2+ Models (Warhammer 40K)Heavy Weapons Team
C2Vehicle of Monster (Warhammer 40K)Basilisk
E3Fortification of Scenery (Age of Sigmar)Temple

So that brings Dave up to 30 points for the year with all three at the Expert Level.

Declan (@declanandeeyore)

Peter: You’ve been very busy this month Declan! Three units finished and I love your kitbashed Big Stabbas. Your Termagaunts really stand out and you have got the orange and blue scheme down to perfection now, have you got a hivefleet name for them?

Declan: Cheers for the kind words Peter; I hadn’t considered a Hive Fleet name as they were painted for Kill Team but it’s a great call. I’ll do some reading to get some inspiration. Although I haven’t finished a lot of models this month, I’ve still managed to get three Hobby boxes finished including the ‘Kitbashed’ one which I struggling to think what to do. Fortunately the Big Stabbas for my Big Waaagh came to my rescue. 4 out of 25 in 2 months also puts me roughly on target so looking good although there’s some larger units and even some Behemoths to go… so lots to do still!

March will hopefully see me finishing some Napoleonic British and keeping my hand in on my Tyranid / Genestealer colour scheme. I’ve also got a Warmaster Tournament and I may get some Squigs painted to augment my Goblin army.

Dave: Great to see the Bonesplitterz, they look excellent too. As Pete says, the kitbashed ones are really fun. You’ve timed the Tyranids beautifully if you’re planning on picking up the new 40k codex!

CellExpert Level Goal:Miniature Painted

B2Unit of 2+ Models (Age of Sigmar)Big Stabba
C4Unit of 5+ Models (Kill Team)Termagaunts

This brings Declan to 40 points and all at Expert Level.

Peter (@woehammer)

MonthModels Painted/SoldModels Acquired/BoughtMonths Total
Jan638+32 Unpainted
Feb2513-12 Unpainted

Peter: This is the first month in a while where I’ve managed to paint more than I’ve bought! This includes 10 Necron Warriors that I sold on fleabay this month. I’m over the moon at my progress and have never painted this much in a month before.

Declan: Wow… wow… wow! Peter’s still on fire and whilst he couldn’t get to our small tournament recently he’s definitely on target for the weekend shortly. His Kruleboyz are going to be shooting the enemy to another life. I really like the scheme here – dark and dank models are difficult to do and Peter’s really nailed it. I can’t wait to see the finished Kruleboyz army in the flesh.

Dave: You’ve got loads done! These will look great as you pick them up off the table at Burning Skies  🙂 I’m a pretty slow painter, I’m very impressed with the speed and quality you’ve achieved.

CellExpert Level Goal:Miniature Painted

That brings me to 70 points and 7 Expert Level goals completed.

Other Members

This month we’ve also included some of the other guys who were willing to of share some of their pictures.

Steve

Peter: Steve just joined the crew this last month and has been sharing some of his pictures of his Crimson Fists. He’s building an entire company of them, and they look absolutely awesome!

Declan: How many Weapons does this Impulsor Tank need? It’s got them all and a neat and tidy base to finish it off. The Crimson fists colours obviously work together (I love red & blue armies), and this is no exception. The blue on the Plasma is also nicely done, and something I struggled with last year on the Thermic Generators.

Dave: Almost a great Ultramarine tank but you slipped a bit with the red. Seriously, this is really well done and cleanly painted.

Tony

Peter: Like Steve, Tony is a new member of the Woehammer crew and back in January painted these stunning Stormcast flappy birds! The skin on these alone must have taken hours upon hours. True talent on display both with Steve and Tony.

Declan: Dragons… but not the small ones – Tony has gone for the big guys here. Krondys (blue) and Karazai (Red) are looking great in traditional dragon poses. The wings are painted in a more realistic tone than is ususally shown, which matches nicely with the chests and really ties these together – they definitely belong in the same army.

Dave: Skar and Mufasa are both great models and Tony has done a brilliant job on them. Hopefully he and Steve will start bingo cards too!

Last Weeks Poll Results for Orders

Here are the results from last weeks polls.

Based on these results, the following wording will be added to our living rules:

SHOOTING A TARGET
When any unit wishes to shoot, they do so by rolling a number of D6 equal to their FIREPOWER capability. For example, a standard conscript infantry battalion will have a FIREPOWER 1 rating, showing that the unit rolls one D6 when rolling to shoot at a unit.

HITTING
A unit will need a certain number on their FIREPOWER dice in order to successfully shoot an enemy unit.  All units start with a BASE SHOOTING SKILL (BSS) of 4+, this can be adjusted through the Faction creation process and each units RANGED ABILITY will be required on their FACTION SHEET.

Therefore, if a unit is targeting an enemy unit in the open that unit will need to equal or beat it’s RANGED ABILITY on its FIREPOWER dice to record a hit against that unit. However, before you roll the FIREPOWER dice you will need to check against the WEAPON RANGE of the weapon you’re using and apply any effects as below.

WEAPON RANGE
Each weapon will have a range profile showing its EFFECTIVE RANGE and its MAXIMUM RANGE. When a unit is shooting, if the range to the target sits within the MAXIMUM RANGE profile, then that unit will need to deduct 1 from its dice roll when rolling its FIREPOWER dice. Firing a weapon inside it’s EFFECTIVE RANGE has no impact on the dice roll.

ARMOUR SAVES
Once a unit has had hits allocated against it, if that unit possesses then it is allowed to make an ARMOUR SAVE roll for each successful hit against the unit. Use the FACTION SHEET to find the units ARMOUR SAVE. Cover also can have an affect on the save needed.

COVER
Depending on the type of cover a unit is in will have an effect on that unit’s ARMOUR SAVE. Cover comes in three categories, SOFT COVER and HARD COVER. SOFT COVER includes terrain like swamps, fields and woods, this type of terrain allows the player to add +1 to their ARMOUR SAVE roll. HARD COVER includes terrain like built up areas or fortifications and add +2 to a unit’s ARMOUR SAVE.

MORALE DAMAGE
All units begin the game with a **** MORALE STATUS. As unsaved hits are suffered by the unit this degrades, as it degrades the unit becomes harder to order and can eventually flee the battlefield.

THIS WEEKS POLLS

This does raise some additional questions in regards to Morale however:

With option two I can see each ship having a number of “systems” which can be damaged, i.e. the weapon system may take three hits before becoming completely disabled but each hit could mean -1 to hit with their FIREPOWER dice. Once a system has been completely destroyed hits have to be allocated elsewhere.

Declan – Peter’s found me a non-Stormcast, non-Seraphon 5-0 list… however this is a Stormcast list in disguise with two of the best units from the book included – Stardrake Guard and Dracothian Fulminators. Mortal range shooting is currently very powerful and with over half the army being from a different book is it really Cities?!

The Freeguild Crossbowmen provide some shooting whilst holding objectives and providing bodies, and the Freeguild General on Griffon can help take out screens and charge with the Stormdrake and Fulminators — have your own screens present.

It’s a very powerful list but does need practice to win, and a little luck to go 5-0; Well done John B.

Phil McGuinness – Ironjawz

Phil managed an impressive four wins and one loss, losing against John B and his Cities of Sigmar/Living City in Round 3. He beat Sylvaneth/Winterleaf in Round 1, Cities of Sigmar/Living City in Round 2, Beast of Chaos/Darkwalkers in Round 4 and Sons of Behemat/Taker Tribe in Round 5.

Declan – With the rise of Stormcast the Ironjawz may have been forgotten, but this list is still hard as nails and smashes and bashes it’s way through tournaments.

The two Maw Krushas are insanely quick and with Hand of Gork from the Shaman it is possible to have them on a 3″ charge at the end of the hero phase (teleport 12.5″ away, Mighty Destroyers). The Warchanters increase the damage output of the Krushas significantly and the Brutes (whilst small units) provide some solid defense of objectives. They can’t be taken out without an active effort.

Good to see Ironjawz in the top 3 again. I’m sure more will get there soon.

Mike Callaghan – Ironjawz

Like Phil, Mike won four games and lost only to eventual winner John B and his Cities of Sigmar/Living City list in Round 2. Along the way he beat the Flesh-eater Courts/Court of Delusion in Round 1, Cities of Sigmar/Living City in Round 3, Sons of Behemat/Taker Tribe in Round 4 and Lumineth Realm-Lords/Iliatha in Round 5.

Declan – … as if by magic, there’s a second one — like buses! Almost identifical in the character loadout, with the shaman being dropped, but the 2 Warchanters & 2 Maw Krushas being maintained. This allows for Phil to take Ironsunz which have a superb counter charge ability at the end of the opponent’s phase.

The 10 Brutes are a very damaging unit, especially when given the Warchanter Violent Fury buff (+1 damage) once the Maw Krushas are out of range or dead. With lots of Drops this army rarely has the choice to go first, but with 121 wounds and 2 Maw Krushas there’s not much in the game that will successfully alpha-strike it.

A final shout out for taking Rippas… Phil’s clearly a great strategist! Read here to find out why I think they’re one of the best units available to the Ironjawz.

Wildcard – Cara Newby – Beasts of Chaos

Cara managed to get three wins and a draw during her weekend and finishing 7th. Beating Cities of Sigmar/Living City in Round 1, drawing against Blades of Khorne/Reapers of Vengeance in Round 2, beating Lumineth Realm-Lords/Zaitrec in Round 3, losing against 2nd placed Phil and his Ironjawz/Bloodtoofs in Round 4 before beating Lumineth Realm-Lords/Syar in the final round.

Declan – Beasts of Chaos are having a resurgence following the recent White Dwarf article and it is good it see. Cara has gone full magic (I won’t pretend to know what it all does), with an additional spell for 5 characters, giving loads of options for all occasions, as well as all 3 Endless spells for the Beasts.

This is backed up by two Monsters allowing easy access to Monstrous Takeover and bonus points for other battle tactics. They are cheap enough to throw away as well once they’ve picked up the additional points available.

And it’s rounded off by some horde Battleline and 6 Bullgors. What an army… and hopefully I’ll see some Beasts of Chaos on my travels soon.
