Top Three AoS Lists from Da Great South Waagh – 12th/13th February 2022

Da Great South Waagh! was a five game event over two days that took place in the UK on 12th and 13th Feb. It saw a massive 72 players duking it out to be claimed champion.

Most Selected Faction/Subfaction

Stormcast Eternals/Hammers of Sigmar once again see themselves at the top of the most selected faction/Sub-faction sheet making up 10% of all the armies present. Stormcast were also represented by 13 armies from differing sub-factions. If you’re planning to go to an event, its almost worth making sure your army can counter Stormcast, Cities and Seraphon at the moment.

The Final Tournament Placings

Friday Follow – Tournament Calendars

I go to a lot of tournaments as weekends are the best time for me to play games… plus I get to play lots of new players and new armies!

But how do you find them in your local area?

There are heroes throughout Warhammer looking after you, and I want to shout out to two of them.

The Dankhold (UK)

Trogg has an occasional blog, but also a list of all tournaments in the UK! It’s a great resource and one I use… a lot! Especially if I find myself with a spare weekend.

AOS Shorts (Worldwide)

Dan runs a website with lots of resources for Age of Sigmar, under the branding ‘AOS Shorts’. If you’ve never seen it, give it a read – and use the calendar to get your tournament fix.

And if you’re uncertain whether to go or not, take the plunge, sign up and let the tournament organiser know that you are new! We’ve all got to start somewhere and I always find the AOS community very welcoming.

Book Review – First and Only

Gaunt’s Ghosts – 1 – By Dan Abnett

Welcome to Woehammer – have you noticed the lovely feeling of no adverts (ads), no pop-ups and no auto-playing videos? Well, that’s the norm here at Woehammer.

But this is only possible because of our wonderful Patreons. So, some articles over 1 year old will now display our Patreon request at the top of the article… like this one! Don’t worry, we are not adding ads – but if you can afford to donate to the site, we would definitely appreciate it. Membership is available from just £1/month (plus taxes!!)

I read Gaunts Ghost’s on their first release, but lost track of the books after a while. When Black Library offered the first trilogy on ebook at a discount I picked them up and have started to re-read them. Having finished the first book, let’s have a look at it:

In the Chaos-infested Sabbat system, Imperial Commissar Gaunt must lead his men through as much in-fighting amongst rival regiments as against the forces of Chaos.

For a thousand years, the Sabbat Worlds have been lost to the Imperium, claimed by the dread powers of Chaos. Now, a mighty crusade seeks to return the sector to Imperial rule. And at the forefront of that crusade are Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only – better known as Gaunt’s Ghosts. Trapped in the grinding trench warfare of Fortis Binary, the Ghosts find themselves drawn into a conspiracy to assassinate the crusade’s leader, Warmaster Macaroth. With enemies all around them and no one to trust, Gaunt and his men must find a way to save the warmaster and prevent the Sabbat Worlds Crusade from falling into anarchy – even if it means waging war on their supposed allies.

Dan Abnett’s classic series of Sharpe in the Warhammer 40k universe starts here, with Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only regiment.

The men of Tanith are forced to leave their homeworld when Chaos attacks and Gaunt takes the regiments off world to save them for the Emperor… to die later!

This is essentially a collection of short stories / novellas with the characters and regiment introduced slowly. The stories are also ordered in a non-chronological order, but this just means you find out information as Abnett intended. Whilst there is a not a lot of character development here – apart from Gaunt – there is a lot of information about the Tanith First and Only and about their world. You get the impression of what Tanith is like, and a view into how the scouts are able to contribute to the fighting of the Imperial Guard / Astra Militarum.

A classic in the Warhammer 40k Universe.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

We always encourage people to shop at local bricks and mortar stores, but if your friendly local book store doesn’t have this available, we have a UK Amazon affiliate link & a USA Amazon affiliate link for which Woehammer receives a small commission.

Player Stats – The Honest Wargamer

As Friday fast approaches, I wanted to give a special shout out to The Honest Wargamer and the Stats crew for bringing us loads of information on Age of Sigmar since the release of 3rd edition.

They have gathered information from all over the globe to bring us information on the State of the Meta and allow us Gloomspite players to not feel too bad about a 1-1-3!!

For those who haven’t been over to their site before I urge you to have a look

Welcome back! But the Stats Team have worked through the long nights and given us… Player Stats!!

If you’ve played in a 5 game (no comp) tournament in AOS3 you’ll likely find your name on here… along with paths to victory and how you line up with the other players in your region and get bragging rights for being the best in race – this is a great addition and means that you can be top of the pile even if your army is struggling at the moment. It’s great for those with only one army or those who like to stick to an army throughout a year.

It’s marking is the best 6 tournaments and then points for Win & Draw (which can be slightly higher for larger tournaments) in order to give a score out of 900. This means that even small 5 game tournaments will qualify and can get you loads of points so there’s no need to get to LVO each year!

I must admit to being biased here in that I like stats, and I’m on the list.. so forgive the following screenshots!

Top 16 in the world, with some big names there – many of which will be at AOS Worlds in Prague in May! Specially well done to Toby Meadows in 18th who has got there with only 4 tournament results and no defeats! Wow!!

If categorisations could cause wars, this might be one of them but UK & Ireland is one of the largest player bases in the world, and as we came out of COVID restrictions near to the release of AOS3 there a number of people who have had the opportunity to get to 6 toournaments. Mike is at the top, and is a superb player of Seraphon who is always around the top tables (with 2 5-0s and 3 4-1s out of 6 tournaments). With Owen Jackson (of Honest Wargamer fame), and Matt Mallow taking 2nd and 3rd so far.

Then there is by faction, although Big Waagh! are currently under represented in the Meta due to the love for Ironjawz. However Roger Barker tops it with 2 4-1s.

And you can get more detail on a individual player:

For GDPR purposes, I’ve selected myself… that’s definitely the reason

Which shows the event results from 5 game tournaments attended, as well as Event Path where applicable… where you can see all my losses in game 5!!

The points per tournament are given clearly as well, so you can see how you (or your mate) are doing and battle for the best in your local area.

And the final piece of the puzzle – you can look at player by faction to see how well you are performing within your army. Great for those armies that historically struggle — although as you can see from my 77th with Sons maybe not if you only play 1 tournament with them!

So… a huge Thank You to Rob (The Honest Wargamer) and Stats Team (led by Ziggy) for a great set of data and presenting if so easily!

Here’s to the next 5 months to see who finishes AOS3 on top. Who’s your money on?

The Final Tournament Placings

Hobby Update – Kill Team Termagaunts

My Genestealer Kill Team article is proving to be a bit of a slow burner hit, and I love the colour scheme so I decided that it was time to get going on some reinforcements for the Kill Team.

For those who didn’t catch the original article I assembled and painted 10 Genestealers for Kill Team in order to play against some casual wargamer friends (ie not competive). The Genestealers got one game in, but they proved to be a little too powerful for the group of players so I sat out and watched a few more games.

So… to tone it down a bit I picked up some Termagaunts from my box ‘o’ Tyranids and got painting.

The scheme is Black undercoat, with Grey Seer zenithal highlights
Then Tallasar Blue contrast, drybrush with Teclis Blue
And finally, the orange for the bone / carapace – Mephiston Red, Wild Rider Red, Fire Dragon Bright

The orange recipe

It’s a nice simple scheme with the Mephiston Red being used as a single base for the orange to go on. If I was neater with the blue it probably wouldn’t even be needed.

How did they come out… well I have pictures!

8 Termagaunts – the terror of no-one!

And there they are in all their glory. They are a great little unit which I can now use for Kill Team or expand for Warhammer 40k if I go back to them. The bases are the Imperial ones, as these guys are getting fed at the Imperial buffet… probably Baal given my other armies.

In Kill Team this unit can operate in a number of different roles, but with Fleshborers they are not going to do too much damage to the enemy. They are more there to soak up fire so the Genestealers get into combat, and to hold objectives near my starting location. Either way they are a fun little addition and I’m happy with how they’ve turn out.

Hobby Bingo

This also means that I’ve done another Hobby Bingo Box!

That’s C4 complete… at Expert level

So a great start to the month with 3 boxes completed and a few more models off the painting table.

What’s next…? I’m trying to get some of the British Napoleonic done using the painting guides suggested by Peter. I’ll let you know how I get on!

Hobby Update – Epic Waterloo

Painting Warlord Games Epic British

Having picked up the starter set for Epic Waterloo by Warlord Games. I have spent this weekend starting the painting for the British.

I went straight to Peter’s article on painting the British and went to Miniature Realms excellent video. He mostly uses citadel contrast which is perfect for me, as I already had most of them, so the outlay for paint wasn’t that high.

Chaos Black & Grey Seer Zenithal

Spraying in the winter in the UK is never straight forward, but I clipped off some of the sprue and undercoated some of the chaps in Chaos Black. I then applied a Grey Seer zenithal highlight to help the Contrast paint hold.

I then applied a light highlight of Corax White from the pot to bring out a little more of the details.

Basilicum Grey Trousers

I am reliably informed (by the internet) that the British wore grey trousers as Waterloo, and so used Basilicum Grey as suggested by Miniature Realms.

I’m not the tidiest of painters, but I tried to steer clear of the torso so as to keep the white as clear as possible. I did deviate a little from the guide at this stage and have changed the order of the painting. Partly because I’m not sure the method of painting red (be careful) will fit with my painting style (splash it on!), so I may need to do more white highlighting later.

Shoes

The shoes need to be black so I’ve used Black Templar on these. I didn’t take much time on these but more care is required for the Riflemen as some of them are wearing boots for variety.

I have painted the rifles here, but changed the order of painting later to speed things up

Faces and Hands

Gulliman Flesh is magic… and I’ve used it extensively on my Gargant army… they work just as well here and I’ve picked out the faces and hands.

Because the trousers are darker you can even go over the lines a little! But I try to be as careful as possible to reduce time going over the paint again.

Hair & Backpacks

Again, stealing all my colour schemes I used a mix of Nazdreg Yellow, Gore Grunta Fur (Brown), and Black Templar for the hair at the bottom of the Shako. This is such a small area, I’ll definitely need to go over the top of the backpacks in the future!

And I’ve done the backpacks and one of the containers in Black Templar as well. It’s definitely getting a lot of use and looking good so far. It’s also a large area to get completed so gives me a good bit of progress on all the models.

Batch Painting

In order to speed things up I am batch painting these… in a huge batch! So I’ve done the first steps on 60 strips for all but the backpacks – that’s this evening’s job! That means I’m doing 600 soldiers in a single batch paint!

I’ll split them up once I start to work on more detail areas, but I imagine the guns and shakos (hats) are next.

I’ll let you know how I get on! Hopefully I don’t go crazy.
