GT Win Rates

Interestingly, the dying faction of Beast of Chaos have the highest Elo average of all the factions currently playable in Age of Sigmar, this will primarily be because of experienced players having them in their collection and possibly trying to make the most out of them before they are no longer tournament legal.

Disregarding both Beasts of Chaos and Bonesplitterz, our Age of Sigmar stats currently has only the one over achieving faction – Flesh-eater Courts with a win rate of 60% – that’s not bad. While at the other end of the table we’ve three factions under achieving with the lowest at 42%. All of these factions are only a few percentile outside of the 45-55% green zone (balanced). Flesh-eater Courts have a slightly higher than average Elo rating for their players, which could be marginally inflating their win rates.

Estimated Win Rates if the Player Skill Levels were Equal

That’s a mouthful of title isn’t it!?

Essentially, what I’m trying to do here is work out what the win rates would be if the skill levels of all the players were the same (Yes, I realise this is nearly impossible to calculateBut I’m playing around here).

How it works is by calculating the average Elo of all the players that have had matches since the December battlescroll dropped. This worked out as 428.9. I then calculated how much difference there was between a factions average Elo shown in our original win rate graph to this overall average. The difference between these two figures was then turned into a percentage difference over/under the 428.9 elo. I then increased or decreased their win rate by this percentage (But this isn’t as simple as deducting or adding the percentage different to the win rate – you have to work out for instance what 4% may be of say 53% and then apply that. For Example – 10% of 40% is 4%)

The results suggest that perhaps Flesh-eater Courts may have an easier time of it than the other factions, while Disciples of Tzeentch and Skaven need a bit of a boost. But with only four factions outside the green zone, this adjusted win rate chart suggests the game is well balanced.

Battle Formation GT Win Rates

This chart only shows the Battle Formations that have achieved 100 games or more in GT play (the number of games shown in brackets).

Flesh-eater Courts have 390+ games in tournament play at GTs and we can see well over half of those games are under the Lords of the Manor (allowing an additional slain model to be returned to their unit on top of whatever the usual ability allows) battle formation. While it’s probably no surprise to many of you that Vanguard Wing for Stormcast Eternals is their top choice – allowing one Vanguard Chamber unit per turn that doesn’t move to teleport anywhere on the battlefield 9″ away from all enemy units on a dice roll of 3+. Sentinels of the Bleak Citadels is also a strong choice for Stormcast Eternal players allowing the players to pick one Ruination Chamber unit each turn to have Ward (5+) for that whole turn.

These are joined this week by Idoneth Deepkin and the Akhelian Beastmasters (add 1 to hit rolls for combat attacks made with companion weapons by friendly Akhelian units). Who slot in with a win rate of 56%, just outside the green zone.

At the bottom of the table, Bacchanal of Blood isn’t too hot for the Soulblight Gravelords, though it is their most popular option – allowing them to add 1 to casting rolls for friendly Vampire units that are not in combat and adding 1 to wound rolls for combat attacks made by friendly Vampire units that charged in the same turn (see Blood Knights).

They’re by the Disciples of Tzeentch and the Wyrdflame Host (subtract 1 from wound rolls for attacks made by burning enemy units) and the Lumineth Realm-Lords and its Vanari Battlehost (The Lumineth player can use the ‘Power of Hysh‘ ability in addition to the other Facet of War ability used during the battle round).

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the Age of Sigmar stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!). Neither to 600-699 rated players. Where we start to see the swell in players possibly chasing the factions with more favourable rules is in players rated less than 600 Elo.

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

As we can see, the player base for Beasts of Chaos is largely made up of Elite players, which is adding to their win rate in the charts at the beginning of this article.

Faction Win Rates for Players with sub-400 Elo

The aim of the above chart is to show how the lower rated players of between 300 and 399 elo are performing with the various factions. The figure in brackets denotes the number of games the data is based on.

Sons of Behemat and the Maggotkin of Nurgle seem to be the more forgiving factions to play in Age of Sigmar at the moment.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Number of Wins)

The above chart breaks down the faction popularity by the number of wins each player achieved in the first 5 rounds of games at GT’s or GT+’s.

This merely shows that Stormcast and Slaves are by far the most popular factions in the game at present.

Number of GT Wins as Percentage

This chart shows the % breakdown for the number of wins players are achieving in the first 5 rounds at GT and GT+ events.

The Fabien Chart

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

Consecutive Wins

This chart shows firstly the % of players with a negative result from 5 games at GT’s or GT+ in light blue for each faction.

Dark blue shows the percentage of players who achieved 5 wins from 5 in the first five rounds of a GT or GT+.

Orange shows the players who achieved four wins from the first four rounds of a GT or GT+ but were unable to achieve the full house and lost their round 5 match.

Grey shows the players who achieved three wins from three wins but were unable to win in their fourth round match.

Yellow shows all other players aside from those shown in the first three categories, who were able to achieve a positive result at a GT or GT+ i.e. 3 or more wins.

The light blue shows the percentage of players unable to achieve a positive result with the faction at a GT or GT+.

While at the other end of the table we’ve three factions under achieving with the lowest at 42%. All of these factions are only a few percentile outside of the 45-55% green zone (balanced). Fyreslayers appears to be currently run by players with a lower than average Elo which could suggest that if they are picked up by more experienced players their win rate could go up further, this would be my only concern currently. Flesh-eater Courts, Maggotkin of Nurgle and Stormcast Eternals have a slightly higher than average Elo rating for their players, which could be marginally inflating their win rates.

The results suggest that rather than being the top dog, Beasts of Chaos would be dawdling at the bottom. While Fyreslayers would be top dog after Bonesplitterz. Interestingly though, almost all the other factions under this estimate would fall within the 45-55% tolerance zone.

This is just for fun however, and is just my own estimate and is probably entirely wrong!

Woehammer Elo Rankings: December 2024

As it’s the holiday period and we’ve just had the new Battlescroll released, it may be a nice time to publish the top 10 players for our Age of Sigmar Elo System.

As a reminder these are for games that have occurred since the 1st January 2022 and we keep this updated each week as we update the stats.

No system is perfect though, and as we draw our data primarily from Best Coast Pairings and Stats and Ladders, the Elo system we use currently favours those playing in North America and UK tournaments.

But let’s jump in. All of the following stats are for events that have occurred since the September Battlescroll.

World Number 10 – Jarod Brown USA

December 2024 Elo: 745.6
September 2024 Elo: 761.8 (World Ranking: 3rd)

Events Since September 2024

Jarod has fallen in both the World Rankings and his Elo ratings slightly since September, but to be fair to Jarod we only have two games on record for him since September both of which occurred at a single RTT event. Jarod won his first game against Christopher Ryan (Rated: 401.0 pre-event) playing Ironjawz (Ironjawz Brawl) and lost his second to Dalton Montgomery (Rated: 341.2 pre-event) who played Gloomspite Gitz (Troggherd).

World Number 9 – Stark Pister USA

September 2024 Elo: 662.5 (World Ranking: 37th)

AoS Feast of Blades ’245360%
Aegis AOS November RTT33100%

Events Since September 2024

Stark has had an awesome quarter, going undefeated in two RTT’s and a GT as well as getting 6 wins at the World of Championships of Warhammer. In all of these games, Stark has played as the Stormcast Eternals (Vanguard Wing).

Stark had some notable games during this time, losing to Mason Knox (Rated: 712.7 pre-event, Dec World Rank: 12th) at AoS Feast of Blades in the second round, but then going on to beat Matthias Krushel (Rated: 662.2 pre-event, Dec World Rank: 65th) in round 5.

At the World Championship of Warhammer Stark managed to beat a number of big name players, Jesper Melander (Norwegian Number 3 and ranked 44th in the World) in round 4 and Mike McAbee in round 5 (ranked as 11th in the World as of December). In Round 7, Stark also beat current World Number 2 Thomas Guan who has a rating of over 850.

Just last week, Stark added to these by beating Matt Beasley (Rated: 756.7 pre-event, Dec World Rank: 5th) and Matthias Krushel again. These matches have seen his Elo rocket from September.

Stark’s list has remained pretty much unchanged since the start of the World Championships of Warhammer:

Frederick Schmidt has played multiple factions since September, but Disciples of Tzeentch appears to be his main army so far and the one he took to the World Championships of Warhammer. But Frederick has also played Ironjawz, Slaves to Darkness, Kruleboyz and Cities of Sigmar.

Frederick Schmidt has played many big name players over the last few months, beating the likes of Stark Pister who we’ve already mentioned in this article and Danny Elvestad (Norwegian Ranked Number 2). Frederick Schmidt also played and lost out to the legendary Ronya Andersson (Swedish Ranked Number 1) at the World Championships of Warhammer.

Age of Sigmar December Battlescroll: Analysis

Games Workshop today released the December Battlescroll for Age of Sigmar. But you may be wondering what has gone on in the background to establish these changes?

We don’t have any connection with Games Workshop, but we do have a little idea about how they draw their data together.

How GW Calculate Win Rates

Like our own stats, GW collect their data from Best Coast Pairings and more recently Stats & Ladders. This was mentioned in a previous meta article earlier this year.

GW take all events and include everything they can find that isn’t a doubles, teams or online event. So that does include RTT’s. We also know from many of their previous meat articles that they base their changes on the previous 60 days of events.

So what does that give us? Well based on the same data that we could access, we estimate, that they have calculated the following win rates:

Though as GW haven’t published the win rates for December, we can’t guarantee this is accurate.

It is interesting though, as we can see there are only two factions above the 45-55% win rate – Beasts of Chaos (who GW are phasing out and won’t be including in their data) and Nighthaunt.

Honour Guard Changes

One of the complaints (at least at competitive level) is around list building. Most players are taking 2 regiments and reinforcing all the units within that to keep their lists at two drops. This has been described as boring by some and means most lists are the same in construction terms.

Honour Guard Abilities

I think GW are trying to address this with the changes to Honour Guard. For example, they’ve included the rule Regimented Forces, which allows a player who has more regiments than their opponent to choose a second Honour Guard ability (which must be given to a unit that is not in the General’s Regiment). Regiments of Renown cannot benefit from this rule however.

They’ve also added two new abilities to the list for Honour Guard(s); Field Sergeant, for a friendly non-flying Infantry Hero that does not lead a regiment and then add 2″ movement to friendly non-Fly Infantry wholly within 12″ of that Honour Guard.

The other is Prized Beast, which allows a non-Unique Monster who is not leading a regiment to be the Honour Guard. That unit can ignore the affects of ‘Battle Damaged‘ and add 1 to hit rolls for combat attacks made by them (including companion weapons). Good for stuff like the Hell Pit Abomination for Skaven.

Seizing the Initiative

If the player who went second in the previous battle round wins the priority and chooses to go first, their opponent is the underdog until their opponent does the same.

But the main change is giving those behind by a fair bit on victory points a fighting chance to stay in the game:

If a player is behind by 6 or more victory points, they do not suffer any penalty from taking two turns in a row (Going second in one turn, and first in the next); their opponent is not the underdog for the rest of the battle, and they can use the ‘Tactical Gambit’ ability to pick a battle tactic.

Good change, and it may extend the length of games which have sometimes been a little short and end around turn 3 to 4.

What do you think?

What changes do you think have been effective (or not so) for your faction? Let us know in the comments below.

Interestingly, the dying faction of Beast of Chaos have the highest Elo average of all the factions currently playable in Age of Sigmar. While Bonesplitterz, has the second highest….

Discounting Beasts of Chaos, Age of Sigmar is in a pretty good state. I know, I know, they still haven’t resolved Nighthaunt, but there are only 4 factions above 55% and 5 below 45%. That’s pretty good, all things considered. Also, look at the average Elo of those over achieving and under achieving.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!).

Elite and Rookie Players by Faction

The blue section shows the percentage of a factions players which have an Elo rating of 500 or greater. While the Orange shows the number of new players to the faction where they have yet to attend a tournament (based on our database history).

The aim of the above chart is to show how the lower rated players of between 300 and 399 elo are performing with the various factions. The figure in brackets denotes the number of games the data is based on.

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Number of Wins)

The above chart breaks down the faction popularity by the number of wins each player achieved in the first 5 rounds of games at GT’s or GT+’s.

Fabien Barbusse is a top player in the AoS scene and a member of the Woehammer Discord who is one of many who points out any mistakes in the charts before we publish them. He recently stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

Faction Stats: Sylvaneth (Nov ’24)

Battle Formation

Although all of the Sylvaneth battle formations are within the ideal 45-55% win rate range, we’re seeing most players taking either Outcasts (subtract 3 from the enemy control score while in combat with friendly Sylvaneth units) or Lords of the Clan (Allows Sylvaneth Monsters a more consistent Heal ability while using their Endless Growth ability).

Artefacts

We’re seeing almost every player use Seed of Rebirth in their lists over every other option. This allows the player to roll a dice for the bearer when it is destroyed, on a 3+ it survives and has Heal (1).

Heroic Traits

While the bearer is in range of an Awakened Wyldwood, Spellsinger will allow them to add 1 to their casting rolls if they are a Wizard. Or, if they’re not a Wizard they become a Wizard (1).

Manifestations

For once, we see Morbid Conjuration take 2nd place in the picks.

Warscrolls

Belthanos, Alarielle, Gossamid Archers, Kurnoth Hunters with Greatbows or Scythes and the Spirit of Durthu see regular play in Sylvaneth lists. But overall warscroll selection is pretty balanced.

Performance v Other Factions

Sylvaneth appear to run really well into some factions such as the Cities of Sigmar and Seraphon with around a 70% win rate against them.

Against the two most popular of Stormcast and Slaves it’s a much more even fight with the battle able to go in either direction.

Close

As always, you’ll probably (and quite rightly) disagree with me on a lot of these points. Why not let us know I’m the comments below what you think to the Sylvaneth.

GT Win Rates

September 2024 Battlescroll

Interestingly, the dying faction of Beast of Chaos have the highest Elo average of all the factions currently playable in Age of Sigmar. While Bonesplitterz, has the second highest….

Discounting Beasts of Chaos, Age of Sigmar is in a pretty good state. I know, I know, they still haven’t resolved Nighthaunt, but there are only 4 factions above 55% and 4 below 45%. That’s pretty good, all things considered. Also, look at the average Elo of those over achieving and under achieving.

Battle Formation Win %

Faction Popularity (Broken Down by Player Elo Rating)

This is perhaps the most interesting chart to me personally. Here you can see the spread of the player skill levels for each faction according to our Elo rating system (updated each week in line with the stats).

The dark blue shows the really elite players of 700+ Elo. Interestingly, they don’t seem to give a damn about which faction is performing well in the meta and rely on their own skill (as they should!).

He recently stated he felt the most valuable chart would be a version of the one above, which shows the % of 4+ win results in a 5 game event compared to the other results.

Positive Player Results

The below chart shows how many players as a % finished a GT or GT+ with a positive result (more wins than losses). The number in brackets being the number of players that used the faction.

Battle Tactics

Thank you to those who have submitted their game and battle tactic results via the menu at the top of the page. We’ve some early data for you. Remember this is just a guideline only, so don’t draw too many conclusions from this. As we get more data, we’ll open into Faction specific stats for them.
