TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Roland Rivera: Here’s a very unusual style of list for Slaves to Darkness. Most players like clustering their points around 2-3 massive threats, then gear the rest of the army around connecting with them. Not Ludvig – he seems to have gone for a full Nurgle-themed MSU (Multiple Small Units) list, as all of his units feature that Mark and only 1 of them is reinforced. This list can cover a lot of grounds while pressuring objectives, which seems to have been the gameplan because many of hte traditional high-damage elements are missing. Seeing Warriors, Knights, and even Chariots marked Nurgle is no surprise, but the 3 Ogroids would probably be better off with another Mark (however, this would come at the expense of theme).

I am a huge fan of his chosen General for this list – I’ve been in favor of the inclusion of a Nurgle Daemon Prince with the Bolstered by Chaos command trait since the points cost dropped to 150, and the Battlescroll has only made him better by giving him 50% more damage. This guy is a tough (3+ save and 12 Wounds), cheap Hero Monster (thanks to the command trait) that can turn off Ward saves, Roar units you want to take down, pressure support Heroes 7 Rend 2, Damage 2 (3 if you resolve Flaming Weapon) with a 12″ fly speed, and just generally be useful. Ludvig has given him the strike-first ability via the Helm of Many Eyes, which helps simplify the list’s activation decisions (an important thing to have when going heavy MSU).

Another tool in the “simplify combat” arsenal is the Lord on Karkadrak, which can give himself strike-first, as well as the Knights (who are both the heaviest hitter and the toughest anvil in the list) if they are nearby. It also makes for a great Merciless Blizzard caddy. This list may be taking an unorthodox approach to the army, but it turned out to be quite successful.

Aaron Newbom: This is a nice balanced list that has take all comers energy. Gobbsprakk is amazing in this meta and a real all star of the list. It’s hard to leave home without him right now.

The same goes for a single unit of hobgrotz. It’s just so much utility for 80 points

My favorite bit here, though, is the gnashtoof. It’s such a great pinning piece and incredibly annoying to kill for its cost.

In the current GHB sacrificing, your general can be a boon as it opens up tactics. Previously, I would’ve recommended against making the dog general, but it makes sense in this context

TOTAL POINTS: 1985/2000

Hanna Leppänen: This list is a Hollowmourne 99 archetype, with core of the army being 2 units of 9 Crypt Horrors, who of course hit like trucks when buffed. Joachim decided to go with extra artefact for the Spellcasting Savant GS General, picking up the Dermal Robe for better spellcasting, instead of more spells. He has only one Archreagent, which is not typical and has a Ghoul King on Royal Terrorgheist instead of the more common Zombie Dragon King. Terrorgheist is more offensive piece and does have a good spell that gives the target unit a 5+ ward. He also picked 2 Haunter Courtiers to have reliable mustering for his 2 blocks of 9 Crypt Horrors. Weirdly the list lacks one of the best spells the 99 -lists have, Deranged Transformation, but Hollowmourne CA offers some additional mobility to the big blocks of Horrors.

Chalice of Ushoran is a very unorthodox pick, usually seen more in old Morgaunt lists. For Horror lists it doesn’t return models to the meat and bones of the army (Horrors), but you can use it to heal the Terrorgheist King and basically anything within the range of the Endless Spell. One small unit of Royal Beastflayers is a nice tech piece to counter possible Roars preventing feeding frenzy CA’s on the important pieces.

TOTAL POINTS: 1940/2000

Lodivicus: Sharing a lot of the same core units as the list that won the London GT just a week earlier, Laszlo’s list supports that this core may be the new normal for Jaws of Mork lists (as opposed to the double max Squig Herd and Squig Hoppers lists that preceded it a few battlescrolls ago).

The core of the list consists of Skragrott, one doubled reinforced Squig Herd, a Madcap Shaman (with Moonface Mommet and Hoarfrost), a Squigboss, Boingrot Bounderz, Sneaky Snufflers, Gobbapalooza and, of course, the Bad Moon Loonshrine.

Rather than just regurgitating all of the same information about the core, I’ll direct you to read that commentary here. It was so well written by two experts, that there isn’t much that I could say to expand upon it. So what makes this list different from the one that won the London GT just a week earlier? Two significant changes.

First, the decision to select the Fungoid Cave-Shaman as the general makes getting his Grand Strat pretty reliable. The Spore Squig ability reducing visibility to 12” (even against spells) can be huge for his survivability since he’ll be camping near the Loonshrine for the Clammy Hand command trait benefit. As a second source of Hand of Gork, he can still contribute from the back and can get himself out of dodge if necessary to secure the three points.

Second, Laszlo chose to include two Moonclan Shootas units (as opposed to more Bounderz) to provide some level of ranged support. They are primarily there to be model count for objective control but also serve the purpose of adding extra wound count to the army.

It will be exciting to see what other variations on the remaining points around the core will be in the future. And if the core of list does, as I suspect, become the new normal for Jaws of Mork lists going forward.

Conventional wisdom in Slaves to Darkness listbuilding is to go light on Heroes so that you have more points to spend on their devastating power-punching troops. This list has chosen a very different approach – support lots of efficiently-priced bodies with lots of Heroes and a bit of long-range shooting.

Notably, this list features 4 Heroes with the rarely-seen Mark of Tzeentch, which can give the list a lot of positional flexibility when combined with the spellcasting power of Cabalists. With so many potential landing spots if the Heroes spread out, Warp Reality starts to function more like a conventional teleportation spell, which in turn makes it very useful. It also features a unit of Nurgle Warriors to hold the line, a unit of Undivided Warriors to pressure objectives, and a unit of Slaanesh Knights for reach. Speaking of reach, 2 Mutalith Vortex Beasts can combine with Tzeentch Heroes to give this list a bit of long-range damage potential that Slaves to Darkness lists typically lack.

The punch in this list comes from Merciless Blizzard (carried by a semi-expendable Exalted Hero) and a unit of 6 Khorne Ogroid Theridons, which hit like a ton of bricks. It’s a style of list we don’t often see out of Slaves to Darkness, but it clearly has some potential.

This is the top three AoS lists for the North China Open that took place in… China on the 30th of September and the 1st of October. It involved 12 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

As this event had less than 20 players attending there won’t be any list comments here as the guys will be concentrating on the larger events of the week.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: Somewhat surprisingly, a 3-2 list took a podium spot in this tournament. This list is full of oddities and things you don’t often see out of Slaves to Darkness – it has Be’lakor, which doesn’t benefit from the Cabalists subfaction abilities but is nonetheless a potent control piece. Also unusual are the 2 Tzeentch Heroes with no Tzeentch units, which means that their only targets for Warp Reality are each other.

The troops also feature a surprise in a unit of Chaos Marauders, which are mostly overshadowed by the various Cultist units Slaves to Darkness have access to. Furthermore, the Marks chosen are unusual – you usually see Nurgle on Knights (for The Eroding Icon) and Khorne on Varanguard (to maximize their offensive power) – here, we have the reverse.

While the listbuilding here was clearly unorthodox, the results were good enough to snag a podium spot, so maybe there are some hidden gems in this list that need to be further considered.

TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000

Roland Rivera: It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Glottkin Nurgle list take top spot at a tournament. The units in this list are fresh off the back of receiving some points cuts, which have allowed it to pack in more bodies to great effect.

We’ll start with the 30-man blob of Plaguebearers, which are likely the Glottkin’s most common Blightkrieg partner. Because this list is in Befouling Host with a Daemon General and Horticulous Slimux, it likely racks up the contagion points needed to summon a Sloppity Bilepiper quickly, and that can combine with 30 PBs to form a wall that can anchor enemies in place and let you grind them to dust, or simply outscore them. It also has Horticulous Slimux and a cadre of Beasts of Nurgle to engage on multiple fronts and spread lots of mortal wounds and disease points around. The Glottkin themselves are a versatile presence, capable of providing damage, durability, a mobility boost, or spellcasting support as appropriate.

The controlling bent to this list is also bolstered by the presence of Be’lakor, which can put your opponent’s best unit on ice for an entire turn cycle, and some Nurglings provide a deepstriking annoyance that can help your contagion point generation. This list will likely be playing some long rounds, but there’s just something deeply satisfying about taking your opponent’s options away and watching them flail helplessly as your victory point lead grows to an insurmountable extent.

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Roland Rivera: In 2nd place, we have Christopher Johnson’s somewhat unusual Cabalists list. It eschews some of the classic staples of the subfaction (such as Varanguard), runs more Heroes than what we’re used to seeing in Slaves to Darkness lists, and forsakes mark versatility to feature Nurgle on all of its reinforced units. The combination of Nurgle Warriors and Nurgle Knights make for a very durable center, and while Nurgle Chosen are slow, they can still be quite potent offensively.

This list features some unusual Hero choices in the Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Manticore and the much-maligned Daemon Prince. A Nurgle Prince with Wings has its uses, though, as he is a fast-moving, durable utility piece that can turn off Wards and make enemy units strike last. The Sorcerer Lord on Manticore also features a potent horde-thinning spell, which can combine with this list’s sheer bulk on objectives to give you the edge in scoring.

The list is rounded out by the usual suspects in a Chaos Lord as a durable General that can cast Blizzard, the mandatory Sorcerer for his potent combat buffs, and some Cultists to pressure objectives. All in all, it’s refreshing to see some nontraditional lists like this doing well, as it indicates that the recent Battlescroll changes have both improved Slaves to Darkness’ overall positioning as well as its internal balance.

CORE BATTALIONS

**Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

Walter Brock: Hello. We will be looking at my list that went 4-1. With the balance changes to OBR, some things had to change with the points increases and change to Immortis/Stalker healing.

Starting off, we have Null Myriad. It continues to be as powerful as before, blocking powerful spells and letting Bonereapers continue their march forwards. It is important to note that Katakros does not benefit from Null Myriad since he has the Mortis Praetorians keyword.

Overshadow is a different choice from the usual spellcasting savant. We will go more into this later, but where spellcasting savant is a “protect the King” kind of play style. Overshadow lets you be a bit more aggressive with your pieces since you won’t need to be protecting the general all the time.

Going into the units. We start off with the Power Duo of Katakros and Arkhan. We have seen this combination many times before and probably still will. They complement each other very well and keep the rest of the list running at maximum efficiency. From Katakros’s Massive +1 to hit and save aura. Free commands one per turn. A body that hits incredibly hard when near enemy heroes. To Arkhan Having three casts and unbinds with +2 for each. It is an incredibly tough model that is very fast. They each cover each other weaknesses and improve each other strengths. But I could talk about these two all day if allowed, so we are going to move on.

The Ossifector here is the General. Taking diversionary tactics. A powerful 12-inch aura of -3 to charge. Diversionary tactics can make things very difficult for an opponent. Turning 3-inch charges into 6-inch charges alone can make units fail charges that were otherwise guaranteed. For the artifact, the Ossifector has the Cartouche. A 9-inch aura of +1 to wound for friendly Bonereaper unit wholly within range. This will make most units in the Army hit and wound on 2s when combined with Katakros’s Aura. Lastly is blizzard. With the balance update making it so units can not bodyguard the mortal wounds from rolling 1s on the blizzard rolls. Spell casting Savant became less appealing. No one wants to cast Blizzard and then watch the Grandstrat just go poof.

The Reaper was mostly chosen because it was the cheapest option, but it proved to be a very affective piece. Firstly, we took blizzard on the little guy. Two blizzards in the list might seem like overkill, but there’s a purpose. If the first model dies to casting blizzard. We have a second to fall back on. It also hits hard. You can easily get it up to 5 attacks, hitting and wounding on 2s with Katakros and the Ossifector and rend 3 with bludgeon.

Two units of three Immortis as opposed to one large unit of six. With the healing update it became harder to revive several Immortis guard. Splitting the units up allows for potentially reviving more Immortis. These are mostly delegated to bodyguard duty and letting the Heros do most of the work, but they can hit hard when called upon.

A single unit of Deathriders. Fast, can screen, and gives access to an easy battle tactic. These are like a Swiss army knife of units. They have an application for any situation.

The Harvester is the odd one out. No Mortek for it to bring back in the list. It has two purposes here. First is it hits REALLY hard. With bludgeon, The Ossifector and Drain Vitality it can get to an effective Rend 5. Add in hitting and wounding on 2s and Exploding 5s to hit (Empower Nadirite Weapons). Theres not much that can survive the onslaught from this thing. Its also a Monster so it can do all those monstrous actions for added utility. The battle tactic it opens becomes possible very possible once you take all the buffs into account. The second reason we take this. Is to heal extra damage left over on units. The healing Abilities from Katakros and Arkhan can only bring back models when the rest of the unit is at full health. The Harvester helps heal the Deathriders and Immortis models back to full health.

The Shrieker. Honestly in my opinion. Almost every OBR list should use this thing if possible. There are a lot of 5+ wards in the game currently. Reducing a 5+ to a 6+ helps a lot at getting the high-quality attacks Bonereapers have get through. Turning off Inspiring presence and rally can change some matchups drastically.

The Gravetide. This has one purpose and one purpose only. Kill hordes. When combined with the Shrieker this endless spell can be devastating. Rolling over Horde units and killing large chunks of them, while the Shrieker stops Inspiring Presence and make even more flee.

Most of This list fits inside a battle regiment except for Arkhan and the two small foot heros.

The foot Heros sit inside of the Acolytes detachment from the Current GHB. Helping to cast important key spells. Or help stop key spells the opponent wants to get off.

All of this ends up with four separate drops.

ENDLESS SPELL

Danny Wadeson: There’s a sense that Sylvaneth are kinda ‘figured out’ at this point – and y’know, is that such a bad thing? In the words of Radiohead, ‘no alarms and no surprises please’. But what we have here is actually a nice balance that you don’t usually see of two big hero trees and a normal Treelord – who are perennially useful for their anti-pile in tech – and a good solid choice of battleline.

Tree-revs were always good for their teleporty shenanigans and their stonks have only gone up this season due to the battle tactic ‘surround and destroy’. The fact it requires you to pick units that are already on the board makes them perfect for it, given they can then zoom off to a board edge. The following turn they’ll also contribute nicely to ‘intimidate the invaders’. Meanwhile, you have good ol’ Durthu and 6 swords tree-pathing around with the help of Spellswarm Hive putting the pressure on. It’s just a solid, compact and elite list that scores well.

It beat out some decent, tanky, and tricksy opponents, which says a lot about the tools of the list. It’s good to see the tree-peeps hanging on in there this season without any appalling jank.

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: (1960/2000)

Roland Rivera: Slaves to Darkness looks poised to return to being a regular podium contender after receiving some welcome points cuts… but this list would have been legal in the previous Battlescroll as well (albeit minus its triumph bid). It’s a highly mobile and aggressive list that seeks to get to grips with the enemy quickly with very efficient units.

The first of those units is the 10-man block of Chaos Chosen, which can overcome the relatively low Movement characteristic on their warscroll by using Slaanesh’s run and charge command and the Warshrine’s 3D6″ charge prayer for Slaanesh units to zoom up the board and engage. You can do something similar with the 20 Slaanesh Splintered Fang. The Nurgle Varanguard function as both a hammer and an anvil, as they are a fast, durable unit against virtually any form of damage whose output can be greatly augmented using buffs such as Daemonic Power and Hoarfrost. Lastly, a couple of units of Untamed Beasts provide cheap, fast objective grabbers and screens to help you dictate engagements.

The list is rounded out by the mandatory Chaos Sorcerer Lords for access to the aforementioned buffs, as well as the do-everything Chaos Lord, who is a Blizzard-casting Wizard, a Priest that can get you some extra command points and marks your Cultists Slaanesh, and a hard-to-kill General that can potentially steal objectives from your opponent via the Conqueror’s Crown. I am very much a fan of this style of list, and I am happy to see it do well.

TOTAL POINTS: (1980/2000)

Danny Wadeson: New battlescroll who dis? It’s Gareth Parnham with the new and de-proved Soulblight, and he’s not even tried to prove that zombies are still too good, which is disappointing. Instead, he’s opted for the rarely seen triple threat of Neffie and not one but two Vlozds. There’s also msu chaff, which will never be bad in Soulblight, and a Corpse Cart which I imagine is primarily to help ensure Neffie gets her unrendable spell off (as it provides an additional +1 to the existing +1 LoB vamps who aren’t in combat get) – given it’s crucial to the survivability of the 2nd Vlozd – given the first one still has Cloak of Mists.

Losing only to a Boulderhood Ogor list – which I imagine had some good charges and therefore MW output – the perfect way to not give a heck about something being unrendable – proves this quite original list type has wings. Big, flying, self-healing unrendable bases, combined with good spell casting and Neffie’s re-set up shenanigans means It’s really hard to counter-deploy against this army, and it can provide so much forward pressure while the msu chaff just pop out of gravesites onto objectives. Very interesting for an early success post-battlescroll!

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Dalton Kahle: This list isn’t a typical gitz trogg list, instead of using multiple units of rockguts, he chose to use a big block of them supported by a sloggoth, which is almost an auto include in a troggoth list, and 2 dankholds which I believe he was using the snufflers for, making them extra tanky, along with them being super good at killing things. Troggboss is there for the bonus attack and all out attack, and then the little wizards are there for the realm spells, giving high rend or low to hit or wound with hoarfrost, and killing anything close with merciless blizzard, along with the moonface mommet making anything that gets close regret being there when the Troggs swing back. Killy, tanky, and hard to remove with the double healing, makes it a hard list to fight and survive against

Peter Dixon: There’s never “a lot” of tech in an Ogor list, being one of the more direct of factions to play. But the idea behind my 4-1 list at Trouble at Mill revolved around trying to make my Frostlord survive the inevitable glut of Merciless Blizzard casting Skinks and Vampires by giving him the Polished Nullstone Pebble and using the Stonehorn Monsterous action to land in the middle of the opponents army. People are much less likely to cast 4d6mw spells at you if theres a 50% chance that the spell bounces back onto their units… who knew! Apart from that the game plan was setup aggressively and go first, using Beastclaw raider units frankly insane movement to pin as much of the opponents army in combat off all of the objectives. Then in turn 3 whatever was left of my army ran away like little cowards completing the battle tactics Intimidate, Savor the taste and Surround and destroy in any order. This plan worked flawlessly until the final round where on the Battleplan Icefields, 2 out of 4 of my Stonehorns failed their charge and took a load of mortal wounds for my trouble, and then loosing the priority roll and getting doubled by 6 Varenguard and 10 Chosen. 😛
