Hanna Leppänen: This list is an interesting one! Blisterskin is not the most typical subfaction, but it gives +2″ move to all Blisterskin units and a teleport CA for flying units. The Hero section of this list looks rather typical with double Archreagents providing 2 casts each and summons. Goose King aka Aborrant Ghoul King on Royal Terrorgheist providing a good mobile hammer (especially when buffed up) and Foot King for that +1 A spell and 10 Ghouls summon. Spellcasting Savant is a good GS, especially with Flayers, who I think are playing a major role in this list, transporting the heroes and being super mobile.

Overall, this list is a neat take on how FEC can be super control heavy (this was earlier this year seen particularly in Morgaunt lists). Lots of movement, movement shenanigans, screens, and zoning pieces prevent armies from getting where they want to go, with a huge threat of Goose King and Terrorgheist looming around (possibly teleporting with Blisterskin CA).

The list plays vastly different to the typical “99” horrors lists seen around. It doesn’t hit hard apart from the terrorgheists, but it provides a lot of hard to counter, mobile pieces that can screen the Terrorgheist and bully the back lines. Flayers can carry the non-flying heroes surprisingly far when needed, and while they’re definitely in the short end of the recent changes FEC got in Dawnbringers, they can do work, especially against the squishier targets. The 2 Terrorgheists do the heavy lifting of this list, while summons and fast flayers outmanouver and threaten out of position units.

This all being said, this kind of list requires very good positioning to function well, so very well done to Trung for getting his 5-0 with the list!

Aaaah, Starborne. Last time I commented on a Starborne list, I just made a glib limerick. And I can’t exactly top that. So this time, I’m just going to speculate idly on what could be done in terms of internal balance to mix things up a little.

Firstly, kill ‘Lord of Celestial Resonance’. Just straight up delete it from the book. It’s so far and away the most competitive pick of Command Traits as to render the rest meaningless. Sure, there was that one no-Slann list at War in the Heartlands that just happened to go 5-0, and he’s a complete legend, but of course the rest of us mere mortals want double the star power for just playing the game. Delete that command trait and we’d see some experimentation with the others – plus, as a result, the Slann’s points could probably drop a little which would also make him much more viable in Coalesced lists.

Next, re-write the Dracothian’s Tale sub-faction rules. As it stands it’s fairly pointless as I see it – the army gives you teleporting, you want stuff on the board for generating star power and screening your Star Power Generators – and there’s even a handy artifact (which this list hasn’t even bothered to take) for bringing stuff in outside of 7″ as opposed to 9″. So what does Draco Tail actually offer? Change it to something like – I don’t know, it buffs Chotecs and Terradons, or makes monsters a bit better somehow so that it can function as the ‘wizard lizards with fighty friends’ playstyle.

CORE BATTALIONS
*Ossiarch Cohort

TOTAL POINTS: 1950/2000

Roland Rivera: An interesting note about the Ossiarch Bonereapers 3rd edition tome is that the first list to earn 5-0 honors used the Crematorians subfaction. Clarificatory changes to the timing of the Gothizzar Harvester’s ability (which made it markedly worse) resulted in it falling out of favor, but recent points cuts to the Harvester and to Mortek Guard have made it an appealing option once again.

This list features an interesting General choice in the Liege-Kavalos, which has been kitted out to be an immovable object with the combination of Mighty Archaeossian (which gives it a 3+ ethereal save) and Lode of Saturation (which gives it a base 5+ Ward). Because this list is Mortek Guard-centric, a Soulmason is a strong choice thanks to the Soul-Guide spell. These choices join a Boneshaper and Katakros, which are common inclusions in most OBR lists.

As for the troops themselves, this list features 2 units of 20 Morteks that it will seek to get into combat, as well as 5 Kavalos Deathriders as an efficient skirmisher unit. Lastly, a Harvester provides a potent source of secondary healing for the Mortek as well as a cheap, decently hitty Monster to Roar into combat with.

Last but not least, the list includes some endless spells in the Bone-Tithe Shrieker (to combat wards) and the Soulstealer Carrion (to combat cheap objective grabbers). You don’t often see these spells in OBR lists with how tight their points situation currently is, but the pilot here clearly felt that they were needed, and who am I to argue?

Roland Rivera: The big winner of this tournament is a somewhat unusual Khorne list. You don’t often see Khorne players go heavy MSU (Multiple Small Units or Minimum-Sized Units, depending on who you ask) with their troops, nor opting for the Goretide and its bonus to wound for units trying to take over opposing objectives, but clearly it paid dividends here.

A big part of why I believe those decisions paid off is that this list is very committed to taking the fight to the enemy. Skarbrand is a one-man wrecking crew that can charge 3D6″, the Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury moves fast and gives you a second shot of 3D6″ charging on any unit you want, and the list is committed to the heavy cavalry approach with 2 units of Mighty Skullcrushers and a Lord of Khorne on Juggernaut, all of which have a base 2+ save (!). Furthermore, it has a Slaughterpriest with Killer Instinct for even more movement potential. These elements can combine to pin opponents in their deployment zone early with very tough units, making it very difficult for them to capture enough objectives to win.

All that speed is complemented by the usual Khorne support pieces – Bloodreavers for cheap Blood Tithe, Blood Warriors to hold the middle, a Bloodsecrator for quality Rallies and an on-demand offensive buff, and the aforementioned Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury’s -1 to hit aura. This list is coming at you hard and heavy, and most opponents will not be prepared to push it back fast enough to win.

Ramon Silva: Here in Sunny Southern California, In and Out, answers the question of; if you have one thing that is really good (Like a burger, bun and cheese) Why not have four of them?

This tasty 4-1 victory by Rueben Parker with golden boys is a straightforward 4x4x4 of charging, scioning, and comet calling mortal wounds.

How now? Hammertown? The first part of 4 is the Heros- 4 vexillors, banner bearers, that do, D3 mws to a 6in AOE bubble, 24 inches from them. One of them seasoned with the popular artifact/command trait, arcane tome/MoM- Common staple due to primal dice and battle tactics.

After are the annihilators. With a 3+ chance to do D3 mortals to anything within 10 inches of where they drop down from the sky..
And just like the chariots, when the annihilators charge, they do mw’s based off the charge roll.

If that isn’t enough MWs, Don’t worry, the liberators also have a chance on a four-up to do D3 against enemies on objectives at the end of the combat phase.

Looking at the lineup of opponent’s Rueben had to face, it seems like the trees were vegan, there was a double helping of bacon, and undead that just didn’t have enough stomach.

The only thing that could finish the meal was a mummified amphibian. Which kind of makes sense because they like to serve extra helpings of mw frog legs, that they can just summon from stardust.

Carl Stokes: Here we have a fresh take on the usual “shoot n’ scoot” approach to KO. This list takes Zon, meaning that the balloon boys are gonna be +1 to hit and wound on the charge. And boy is it easy for this list to charge. You’ve got the anti-mobility cast of characters, with an Admiral and Navigator kitted out to reduce opponent’s movement or increasing their own, depending on the roll. Then you throw in 2 frigates packed with the balloon boys that can fly high and end up exactly where they need to be. And finally, the Endrinmaster and Brokk are equipped with balloons of their own and can pretty easily keep pace with the boats (if not embarked themselves.

For shooting, this list packs slightly less firepower than the usual ironclad plus thunderer combo, but you’re still looking at an absolutely outrageous amount of firepower from a slightly close range and two heavy sky cannons for long range plinking before the lads get stuck in. Brokk has a sneaky amount of firepower on his own and can be a nasty surprise for opponents who are expecting a few shots at 3/3/-1/1.

In combat, this list is an excellent example of a glass hammer. It hits like a freight train and dies if things survive to hit it back. That being said, it’s very hard to pin down and extremely hard to cripple before they get to your lines. The embarked endrinriggers/endrinmaster can heal the boats that they’re in to make sure it’s in peak condition before crashing into enemy lines with drills a-whirrin.

Some interesting flex picks in an already slightly off-meta list include the stormcaller command trait to maximize movement control, which is especially important to this build. Otherwise, this list clearly surprised the opposition, with multiple wins against traditionally fast armies (nighthaunt and Big Waagh), although the one loss to SBG isn’t unexpected. That’s a very challenging matchup for a KO list that relies on surgical short range strikes and may not have the easiest time dealing with the sheer recursion/teleporting tricks of SBG.

Overall an excellent list piloted masterfully that really highlights the possibility of the KO book and hopefully spurs on some innovation amongst other players!

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Roland Rivera: 4, count ’em, 4 Bloodthirsters! It’s been a while since we saw a Khorne list go this deep on the big guys do well. Interestingly, Marcus chose to double up on the Wrath of Khorne Bloodthirster, likely to set up combat scenarios in which you can attack with all 4 Bloodthirsters in the span of 2 combat activations. The Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury offers a potent debuff as well as

The rest of the army is very much geared around catering to the Bloodthirsters, by either enhancing their strengths or minimizing their weaknesses. Bloodreavers, Claws of Karanak, and Flesh Hounds are all cheap units that can provide bodies on objectives, or be sacrificed to generate Blood Tithe. On the support Hero front, the Bloodsecrator and the Realmgore Ritualist can provide potent once-per-game buffs to ensure your Bloodthirsters prevail in key combats.

This sort of list is a very all-in way to play Khorne, but if you can manage the inherent risks well, it’s a very powerful (and cool) way to play the army.

TOTAL POINTS: 1960/2000

Kieren Coates: With skaven having such a varied book there’s so many ways to build a list – sometimes you build a varied list able to counter and flex to your needs, but sometimes you know what the mission is, and the mission is to kill your enemy at all costs

Clan skryre is the shooting clan of skaven, and with 15 stormfiends this army can do exactly that. With a warp grinder it can take one unit in reserve to deepstrike, leaving the other set on table ready to receive more more warp power and either move or gnawhole up the board

Not many lists can survive 3 turns of high output shooting, but if it gets a strong double turn and isn’t pinned back into place, get ready for some sparks – I hope you brought some chaff to screen then out!

Sadly the list is very slightly illegal as gryph feather charm is no longer a legal GC artifact – however I don’t feel this would have changed the game much, as amulet of destiny can be taken changing the 5+ ward to a 6+ ward, effectively giving the warlock 1-2 less wounds.

Danny Wadeson: Soulblight continue to prove a menace post-September battlescroll – mind you, every army should be capable of winning, and when the general is Ronya, well – can you really complain? Legion of Night bring some fantastically sneaky shenanigans to bear, mainly thanks to the heroic action to teleport a vampire, along with a unit being able to counter-charge. Once you add Manny’s ability to charge in the movement phase instead of redeploying, it can be a massive headache for the opponent to move around without having their intentions stymied by an angry beatstick.

But what I love is the inclusion of Velmorn and his Grave… Sons of Velmorn, for that sweet anti-pile in tech, albeit at a high price point it seems to me. Combined with the ever-present threat of 20 traditional Graveguard (RE-RELEASE THEM BASED ON THE VELMORN SCULPTS YOU COWARDS), you have some serious movement/pile-in denial backed a brutal hammer, especially with the foot vampire around. Dire wolves and bats provide the ever-reliable fast chaff scoring, while Gravetide allows for some horde clearing and potentially a sneaky, big base bonus screen.

Ramon Silva: Beating out two Starborne lists along the way must have been a particular highlight – big up Ronya ‘Death Queen’ Andersson!

Royna, a. Well-known Warhammer five round winner, has done it again at {name of gt}, with an impressively low body count land grabbing legions of night list.

“Zombies?” she don’t need no stinking “zombies”
Within this four-drop list are many tools to control where the fight happens.

-A cunning counter charge that doesn’t age

-A heroic action teleport so Manfred can railroad a lane and then warscroll teleport out next turn.

-Velmorn with a 3+ save are some Tanky bones. They don’t fall down like other cardboard cutout death rattlers do.

-and the Gravetide endless spell has a huge base size perfect for zoning.

Besides that, The battleline is lean but very mobile.

20 Grave guard is one of the best hammers in the game and can be buffed with horror frost, reliably because the morbeg claw artifact gives the Vlord on foot +3 to cast.

The additional artifact on VloZD nullifies rend from shooting so it can sit back and double up the body count ww12 around them with their command trait.

But when needed they can cast blazing weapon and saddle up for some real damage.

CORE BATTALIONS

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: In a somewhat unusual twist for a Khorne Bloodlords list, this one features a mix between Bloodletters and Bloodcrushers (expected), Khorne mortal units (unexpected), and Allies (even more unexpected). However, the balance of their capabilities is likely effective enough that this list succeeded despite not maximizing the benefit of its chosen subfaction.

The conventional pillars of many Khorne lists are here: a big blob of Bloodletters to give and take damage with, a Bloodcrusher unit as a tough, recursive pinner, a Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury as a versatile Hero Monster, a Bloodsecrator for an on-demand offensive bonus, chaff units like Flesh Hounds and Claws of Karanak to pressure objectives and generate Blood Tithe upon death, and a Herald of Khorne on Blood Throne to help with Bloodletter recursion. Where the differences start to emerge are the inclusion of Furies and the Unmade, which provide some utility tools that are somewhat uncommon in Khorne (fast flying chaff and an anti-Rally/Redeploy aura, respectively). A 10-man unit of Skullreapers is another notable deviation from the norm, but these provide a useful Rally target for the Bloodsecrator while requiring relatively little support to generate consistent damage output.

Because of its high unit count and Khorne’s mobility tricks, this list will be excellent at covering the battlefield and funneling opponents into fights of its choosing, and the Khorne buff lineup is potent enough to allow its hammers to do enough damage to key units. This profiles as a challenging list to pilot, but an even more challenging one to face.

Additional Enhancements
Holy Command: Call for Aid

Total: 2000 / 2000

Craig Ellis: Described by the player who ran this as a ‘Stand on Circles’ list, this is going to be very strong on the primary with the aim of creating blocks of frustrating, hard to kill units and winning the war of attrition. As a Stormkeep, this gives the ability of Redeemers (Liberators, Vindictors) to count as 3 on objectives (only in own territory until turn 3) meaning the level of scoring is going to be consistent throughout the game. Hallowed Knights allows the use of Gardus Steelsoul, who has a 5+ ward aura, adding to the general tankiness on offer here & giving all Redeemers Fight on Death on a 4+. The addition of spells such as Celestial Blades (+1 to Wound), Hoarfrost (buffing weapons) & Azyrite Halo (Save rolls of 6 deal a MW back) plus the Shield of Civilization (d3 MW’s when being charged into) Stormkeep ability means the enemy is going to take some damage when trying to drag these guys off objectives too. Tempestors and Questors provide the threat as well as the ability to score several battle tactics. Vanguard Hunters provides a guaranteed Surround & Destroy battle tactic as well as popping up to snag unguarded objectives. The Knight Relictor with translocation provides the ability to teleport units on a 3+ when required, with Luckstone giving an OPB re-roll if it is really needed. The Grand Strategy (Overshadow; destroy all enemy battleline with at least 1 friendly alive) leans into the aim of the list, keeping as much battleline as possible alive. The Holy Command Call for Aid will bring a unit of Redeemers back OPB adding to the staying power of the army. Looks like some decent match-ups with 4 wins until the final game where he lost to SBGL. It’s probably a tricky match up for this list as it is much stronger on the primary.

Ramon Silva: Shiny silver armor, crackling lightning and chants of “only the faithfu” must be one thing?
Zombies right?… Just kidding but in all seriousness, Stormcast Hallowed Knights are part of the first Legions of Light and Alexis piloted them to an impressive 4-1.

One of the initial books of 3.0, SCE benefits are.. rotting, but being poster boys they regularly get gud warscrolls. Which makes most lists feel like a bag of tricks with some juicy heros and troops.

Gardus in HK give a 5+ ward ww 12.
Knight “nope” incantor with an auto unbind
A priest for “lord, please, get me the f out of here” : translocate
And tempestors for solid ranged damage

This castle style list hands out +1 to wound and armor reflecting mw’s to tanky troops that can also fight on death. Taking Stormkeep means troops count as extra bodies on objectives but they all start on the board. They don’t stay there though as Questor soulsworn have a built in boogie, and the vanguard hunters have a board edge warscroll teleport.

Another point to note is that there is not much shooting at all so this list gets what it needs to get done in positioning and melee. It plays very well into the primary, or objective scoring, and has the additional troops to provide options for the secondary, battle tactics.

The path to 3rd was hard fought, as everything besides ironjaws is fairly newer. KO shooting can nullify the fight on death stormhost ability. Where-as the last three matches were against other melee army’s that just have more in book tricks. Which again makes the sparse shooting even more impressive.

Congrats!

Danny Wadeson: It’s Starborne, with the flex points spent on not one, but two Arks of Sotek, because they’re fantastic wound sponges capable of surprising spike damage. Everything else is the same as usual! Sorry, I’m not going to explain how the entire list works again – but if you really don’t know, it’s basically ‘get summoning points and summon stuff’. As I have no idea what units Abbe summoned, it’s hard to talk about strategy other than to say, I like the double Arks of Sotek because that would make for a helluva screen!

Danny Wadeson: What we have here is a list that looks simple on the surface of things….and is simple beneath the surface too. It’s Nagash, and a shit load of chaff. Now, utilising Nagash well isn’t that simple, but essentially, he’s King-Magic-Man and likes bringing skellybobs back. You’ve got the Myrnmourn Banshees in there to deny opponent’s magic too, which seems somewhat overkill given Naggy’s +3 to unbinds, but hey, sometimes you really, really want to be the only one on the board flinging spells around. And it clearly works – taking down some tricksy factions, including stuff like IDK, which I’d have thought had the forward pressure necessary to give this list trouble. Would love to have seen some of these games!

Lodivicus: I have to admit, when I was asked to do the analysis and commentary on this list, I felt like I was getting Punk’d a little bit. It’s VERY off-meta and illustrates the skill of Chris Kennedy and the level of internal balance Gloomspite Gitz currently has. If you’ve been wondering if it’s possible to 5-0 with a Gitz list that contains pretty much at least one of all the different keyword types in the faction, Chris is here to say “Yes!”

For most mixed lists in Gitz, one would expect that King’s Gitz would be the subfaction choice taken most often. But not here! Chris chose Badsnatchers (reroll one of the casting dice if another Badsnatchers Moonclan Wizard is wholly within 9”) with two Fungoid Cave-Shamans and the Gobbapalooza fitting the bill. Completing the Moonclan Grot portion of the list, two units of Moonclan Shootas and a unit of Moonclan Stabbas round out the list to act as screens, objective control, ranged support and increase the wound count of the list.

The Dankhold Troggboss general with his Glowy Howzit (4+ ward until he can no longer resist the urge to eat it) is one of the most durable general choices available in Gitz and pairs well with the Chasing the Moon Grand Strat. He also adds Scuttletide to the list for free with his Loonskin command trait and gives out the mighty +1 attack to Troggoths when being a Shepherd of Destruction. Completing the Troggoth portion of the list is two units of Rockgut Troggoths (durable hammers with throwin’ boulders) and a unit of Fellwater Troggoths (debuffing tech troggs with their terrible stench and noxious vomit).

The Squig component of the list is not met by the more common Squig Herd or Boingrot Bounderz component, but instead, Mangler Squigs takes the place in the list. With its faction specific monstrous rampage, Giant Boing! it can get pretty much anywhere it wants to go and deal pretty effective damage once there.

What would a mixed list be without a Spiderfang component? The Webspinner Shaman is one of the most popular Andtorian Locus choices due to his 65 point price tag and built in 5+ ward. In true off-meta fashion, Chris gave him the Frost spell Rupture instead of the more popular Hoarfrost or Merciless Blizzard. Considering this event happened 2 weeks after the Rupture nerf, I can only assume he expected that he might run into a lot of Incarnate lists and didn’t want to be without his Incarnate de-levelling tool or perhaps was a list submission deadline casualty.

We have all the four major keyword types in Gitz covered, but how could it truly be an all-encompassing mixed Gitz list without bringing an Aleguzzler Gargant to round it out? With his 3d6 charge and Hand of Gork in the list, this monster can reliably be delivered pretty much anywhere he’s needed. Once there, he can do things like the Smash to Rubble monstrous action to opposing faction terrain or act as a monstrous missile.

While I did not personally witness the event (I wish I had), if I had to hazard a guess (which apparently I do), I would bet that Chris’ opponents enjoyed playing against a list that was so off-meta with so many vastly different and fun components even when they lost to it. It’s definitely not the usual Gitz list you’d expect to see at an event. While I wasn’t provided with the exact lists that he ran into, looking at the factions/subfactions of his opponents it appears that he ran into several different archetypes and barrelled his way to a 5-0 finish with this mishmash crew of Gitz. Very impressive!

I’m a Seraphon player, but there comes a point where you have to just hold up your scaly hands and say ‘it’s the wizard lizard list’. It’s always hard to write commentary on this list archetype because much of the skill comes from what you choose to summon, and where, and how you use it once it’s on the board, which obviously I have no way of knowing.

But for those unfamiliar with the engine in general, here’s how the list works. For every cast, unbind, and dispel, plus for every ‘cosmic node’ (wizards and wizardy shit like the Astrolith), you get a star power point. No, that isn’t the official name. Star power can be used to summon stuff, or do a shit load of MWs to stuff near aforementioned C-nodes. The Slann gets double star power be…wait…hold up…

He didn’t take the double star power command trait!! This is unheard of! He’s taken the ‘can control 3 endless spells and double their range’ trait! That would certainly allow him a lot more leeway in terms of positioning the somewhat fiddly Maelstrom, and allow for one of Kroak’s damage spells to go through the portal instead of Pendulum, which with double-range can much more reliably be cast normally. I can’t believe someone finally didn’t take Lord of Celestial Resonance, what a trailblazer.

There are also two Arks of Sotek because they’re cheap as fuck massive wound sponges with spike mortal potential.

But he didn’t take LoCR!!!

Roland Rivera: This is perhaps one of the most unexpected Nurgle lists I have seen since the 3rd edition book dropped. It picked one of the least-used subfactions (Munificent Wanderers), and is running some very rarely picked units in the Rotbringer Sorcerer (two of them even more so) and the Great Unclean One. The fact that this list went 3-0 in Day 1 is nothing short of remarkable. Take a bow, John, take a bow.

This list is clearly playing the objective game above all else, as its 50 Plaguebearers are not much to write home about offensively but can be extremely hard to shift when backed up by a Sloppity Bilepiper to prevent pile-ins and a caster using Fleshy Abundance to juice up their Wound count. It also uses Nurglings and Beasts for a bit of mobility, as well as potential pinning maneuvers. Plague Drones can also pitch in as pinners, while dealing enough damage that they have to be respected.

On the matter of Hero support, the Great Unclean One carries the Witherstave, which makes disease points more effective, and the Infernal Conduit command trait juices up the list’s summoning ability. All in all, a surprising list, but a pleasant surprise indeed.

Top Three AoS Lists for Resurgence (1 Day Event)

Advertisements

This is the top three AoS lists for Resurgence that took place in the Philippines on the 7th of October. It saw 10 players vying to be crowned champion in a 3-game tournament.

We’re very lucky to have gotten to know the Wartilyo crew quite well since their GT we covered back in May. When Lance reached out about producing a Top Three for a recent one dayer in the Philippines, I jumped at the chance. Thanks to Lance for sending the information through and to the players for sending their list writeups!

If you would like your 1 dayer to be covered by Woehammer, join our friendly Discord Server and contact Peter.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

Also if there’s a one day or two day tournament you’d like us to cover drop us a comment on this post and we’ll have a look at it for you.

The Top Three AoS Lists

Heneral Custard: The list started out as a copy of Liam Kavanaugh’s list from Gymhammer last July, but tweaked to my playstyle. I swapped out Chainrasps for bigger chunks of Spirit Hosts to act as a more imposing anvil, fit in a second Guardian of Souls to spread around the +1 to wound aura (and to attempt Merciless Blizzards), and put Pendant of the Fellwind on the Krulghast because I like them sticking with the Spirit Hosts. The points drop was also a big help, and with an odd 80 points, Craventhrone Guard could accomplish skirmishing, activating Harridans, and completing the odd Surround and Destroy.

Spirit Hosts with the coherency change plus Hoarfrost have been a really fun way to play them. Coupled with the +1 to Hit and +1 to Wound auras, they’re surprisingly dangerous. Suddenly, they aren’t just batteries for Kurdoss or the Krulghast to fulfill Led into the Maelstrom; they do catch people off guard with their damage output. The 1-inch range proved to be a problem, but this is coming from someone who used to run 9 of them in a unit during the last season as Galletian Veterans. Regardless, when they survive the melee, they’re some of best targets for Bait and Trap, and then immediately Harridans can clean up.

Speaking of Kurdoss, he’s just fun to throw into the fray. I often forget that he steals command points, because all I want to do is throw him at a problem and see if he can go the distance.

I wanted to get more use out of the Banshees anti-magic effect, but I think many Nighthaunt players agree with me that there is a certain joy in telling people what the attack profile is. Depending on the match-up, they either made for good counter charging or just being happy little screens.

All in all, Nighthaunt’s current strength feel like their ability to accomplish battle tactics. With the points drop, most of everyone’s favorite tools are viable, and after seeing a list that was all Bladegheist Revenants, I think the ghosts are going to be alright.

Commentary by Basa Mogul

Primary idea of the army:
1) Go for magical dominance + blocks of hardy tarpits making way for kroak to blast away

The primary idea of my army is to just step on the objectives and defend them by going for magical dominance in the form of buffs, debuffs, mortal wounds, and unbinding while supporting it with blocks of saurus. The slann is built as a support unit that can turn into a melee warrior (although it didn’t come up because the saurus always survived). The starpriests are also support units that can use merciless blizzards when the situation calls for it. Kroak’s role is to really maximize the magic denial and area denial. One of the main features of the army is the Wizard-finder 20-man spear saurus block that can have a maximum profile of 2″ 40/60A 2s 2s -2 1. Last note, 4+ bites from saurus blocks are no joke.

Notable match-up comments
Khorne: The bloodthirster & skullcrusher is damage ok vs saurus, but bloodletters are painful. I will just let them try to do their 5+ spell ignores vs Kroak blasts.

OBR – Nagash: I will try stay away 30in from him, and just buff the team since the rest of the army not too painful. Main goal is to try and wizard-find nagash, and try to dish-out celestial deliverance via arcane vassal while being out of unbind range.

Behemat – I will just tarpit, and then blast with kroak.

Soulblight – I will just stand-on the gravesites, try to counter all spells, and try to do snipe damage on the heroes with kroak.

Nighthaunt – I will overwhelm them with the amount of attack dice to roll. Since they are using MSU, I think kroak will do well against them.

Stormcast – I will try to hide the heroes behind battle line, and protect kroak with all the buffs, if needed.

Advertisements

BJ Recio: I started the list out with Nagash – the event poster had Nagash sitting on a throne, and as it happened my Nagash was also kit bashed to sit on a throne, so I felt it was fate heh. On a serious note though, what made Nagash worth the 900 points for me was less the 8 spells casting (it’s strong but not that central, I can afford to miscast), but rather the unlimited unbind attempts at +3 roll. That counters the Magical Dominance and Magical mayhem BTs so it seemed like the way to go with the list is battle tactic denial.

There wasn’t a lot of room for OBR units so the bonus command points were not as plentiful, which meant putting in liege kavalos for the free command per turn. Earlier versions of my list used the boneshaper as the general, but Diversionary Tactics didn’t work so well with it because mortisans are slow and hard to position. And I really wanted that command trait to make Bait and Trap and Led Into the Maelstrom hard for my opponent, so I made LK my general.

Battleline-wise, the spear mortek guard with harvester formed the core of my castle, the sword mortek guard was there to grab faraway objectives and force my opponent to split, and the kavalos deathriders were there for my round 1 battle tactic. They’re all expendable because Nagash brings them back half-strength anyway, and I was crematorians so I wanted them to die to deal mortal wounds.

I should note that while the harvester has been nerfed to the ground, it’s 160 points now which for a monster is not bad. The fact that it brings some mortek guard back is more of a bonus than a feature. And since Nagash is there, my opponents tend to think of the harvester as low priority.

Since I did not make my mortisan the general, I couldn’t use Spellcasting Savant as my GS. I went for Overshadow instead, which sucked against Seraphon and their super tough battleline. I anticipated Seraphon to be my weakest matchup overall, since they have bonuses to casting that weakened the point of Nagash’s +3 to unbind rolls. Then I matched against him at random battleplan 1 so I was off my game from the start. I was slightly ahead of him in points but had no chance on my GS. In the future I should consider another GS – maybe Control the Nexus? Still hard.

I did well against other matchups. I knew SBGL is all over right now with hordes of zombies, but between gravetide and the boneshaper’s warscroll spell, plus my harvester-protected mortek guard, I knew I could outlast and wipe those hordes and use the Soul Release spell to force their re-summons to deploy very out of place. Meanwhile, the mirror versus OBR went well because I just tarpitted his Katakros with deathriders buffed by Nagash spells and outscored him by denying BTs and smashing Nagash against his spellcasting savant general.

Joshua Manalansan: First off, credit for the list and its playstyle goes entirely to Jarod Brown– THE top performing Lumineth Realm-lords player who has pioneered and piloted this list to a 5-0 and 4-1 finish. Much more than that, he has been a mentor to countless players in the Lumineth Discord and is the go-to person for all things Lumineth.

Standouts for this list include Rune of Senthoi, Eltharion, Sevireth, Ellania and Ellathor, double Dawnriders, and double-reinforced Bladelords.

With Rune, Enlightener unbinds on a +4 with the Scinari heroes and Zaitrec. This can be powered up even further with the Optimal Focus realm rule giving another cast and unbind if you go second in the round. Eltharion has one of the best points-to-damage ratios not just in the Lumineth book, but in all of AoS. The twins function as half Enlightener and half Eltharion, growing stronger as the game goes on and getting the bodyguard interaction with the Bladelords. Sevireth just crushes the meta by assassinating Andtorian Locuses, going to the sides of the battlefield, and smashing opponent terrain. Dawnriders are the Swiss army knife of this list. Scores easy points, moves up the board to cast Overwhelming Heat, and provides Speed of Hysh for units that go deep. Bladelords provide the bodyguard rule for our Scinari units and ensures Spellcasting Savant. With Perfect Strike, they will on average deal 9 mortal wounds to whatever they touch.

This list utilizes the Andtorian Acolytes battalion and has overall better usage of primal dice compared to Teclis-based lists. Along with how common Locuses are, the changes to “Look Out, Sir!” and the Sentinel point increase, this list might just be the best way for Lumineth players to tackle the current GHB!

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: Somewhat surprisingly, a 3-2 list took a podium spot in this tournament. This list is full of oddities and things you don’t often see out of Slaves to Darkness – it has Be’lakor, which doesn’t benefit from the Cabalists subfaction abilities but is nonetheless a potent control piece. Also unusual are the 2 Tzeentch Heroes with no Tzeentch units, which means that their only targets for Warp Reality are each other.

The troops also feature a surprise in a unit of Chaos Marauders, which are mostly overshadowed by the various Cultist units Slaves to Darkness have access to. Furthermore, the Marks chosen are unusual – you usually see Nurgle on Knights (for The Eroding Icon) and Khorne on Varanguard (to maximize their offensive power) – here, we have the reverse.

While the listbuilding here was clearly unorthodox, the results were good enough to snag a podium spot, so maybe there are some hidden gems in this list that need to be further considered.
