TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

This list by Lukas Plagat shows a core combination you’ll be likely to see popping up often for Sylvaneth in Andtor. Gnarlroot for 3d6 + drop lowest casting/unbinding, Dwindling for a re-roll cast/dispel/unbind and a Warsong treesinger general with the Spellcasting Savant Grand Strategy who will sit in the corner and stay alive to achieve a GS with the sole condition of “keep your lynchpin alive”, you’re doing it anyway.

Lukas has gone for a min battleline approach, with the return of the double tree-rev unit to achieve battle tactics like surround and destroy, spreading to the sides easily. The meat (or veggies in the Sylvaneth case) of the list is found in the heroes though, the Warsong Revenenant creating mortal wound output while Durthu acts as the primary strike and fade unit, comprising a majority of the list’s damage. The Treelord Ancient creates a tree anywhere, allowing the warsong to be active from turn one, and adding an additional caster and solidly tanky objective holder. Drycha acts as supporting shooting and a back up objective holder and finally the allied tag team partner of the Celestant Prime sits in space until a key time comes to deal a whole bucketload of mortals in concert with the Sylvaneth casting and to add an additional fighting body/objective scorer. Very versatile listbuilding with damage, casting and battle tactic scoring capacity. Everything you’ll need on the new season.

One additional PS note in this list is the inclusion of Luneth’s lamp, a great anti-meta piece which allows better endless spell dispelling alongside some measure of counterplay with priests, incredibly well thought out inclusion by Lukas.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

The legend that is Pete Atkinson of Plastic Craic joins us again for some commentary this week on his favourite Grand Alliance – Destruction. Check out his site ya dogs!

From earliest Age of Sigmar, there have been two approaches to Battleline: build it up, or treat it as a tax.  Some of the powerhouses of 1st Edition, notably Kunnin Rukk and Oops All Witch Aelves, were armies that were blessed with chaff that did their own heavy lifting, so instead of difficult list choices you had those bodies and wounds doing work for you.  All killer, no filler.

As the game has developed, the net has been cast wider and wider for what a Battleline unit can be, culminating in the mighty Mega-Gargant; well Kruleboyz take us right back full circle to those hard choices.  You can either lean into the Gutrippaz, which means tipping resources you can barely afford into reinforcing them and giving them the buffs (because 10 standalone Gutrippaz will do sweet FA); or you can take the bare minimum and use them grudgingly as an inefficient screen.

GW seems to have recognized what a burden Gutrippaz are on the army, by allowing you to check out of taking three units and using some Hobgrots instead, who are at least a cheap screen.  You’re still stuck taking two of them though, and as GW steadfastly refuses to drop their points to something more befitting their chaff-tier stats, Kruleboyz have been left stuck in perpetual Bin status.

Anyway.  New Handbook, new raft of points drops, new opportunities?  Giga Chad Pavel certainly saw his opportunity for legendary Killaboss status, and grabbed it with both hands.  Taking an unapologetic “screw that” approach to his Battleline, Pavel has taken the absolute minimum Gutrippaz tax, and leaned heavily into the good units instead.

There comes a point where the Gnashtoof Boss is just too cheap to ignore, and 120 points seems to be the tipping point for a lot of people – I’ve seen him burst into a lot of lists these last couple of weeks.  12 points per wound with good mobility, a 3+ base save and respectable output is great value, and his warscroll ability heavily limits Battleshock exposure in a world of splash mortals and Geminids.

But he’s not the star of the show.  That, my friends, would be Gobby: finally doing the work that this magnificent model deserves.  Mork Sez No is terrorizing magic armies right now, with Screamin’ Mandrakk and Primal Magic Dice combining to push through those 10+ unbinds and punch out the revenge mortals.  Gobsprakk been an absolute victim for years, and he deserves his moment to shine.

There’s a neat symmetry to the rest of the list: two Shammies and two Crocs buffing two reinforced units of Dakka Boiz early game, and then the Crocs stepping up when it comes to crunch time.  You can set up two little shooty castles early on, each protected by its own little escort of Gutrippaz, as the maxed-out ranged damage segues into the climactic Waaagh turn of combat.  And boy do those Crocs feel good in combat.

The early energy in Orruk circles is mostly around cherry picking the handful of good Kruleboyz units into Big Waaagh, with a Wurrgog Prophet and the vastly-superior Ironjawz Battleline to anchor the list, but Pavel has showed us that there’s life in proper Kruleboyz armies too.  Grinnin’ Blades gives you a pretty effective shield against a lot of magic output, so I’ll be interested to see if this list style has sustained success in the Andtor Handbook.  But that’s a question for another day – today, we toast Pavel’s success.  Na zdravi!

Danny: Here we have a mostly archetypcal Starborne list, beaming directly onto the podium in these early days of the new season.

It’s got the dooble-forg and Starseer for mondo casting and star power points, allowing for tactical summoning to adapt to the board state. It’s got the Saurus Guard to bodyguard the fragile froggos, and some nice cheap skinks to, well, do stuff like standing on circles. It’s also got what is SO obviously going to become the meta-endless-spell, Geminids.

The final filth here is the inclusion of Gotrek, who does Gotrek things in a list/army that, otherwise, doesn’t have any real access to a proper anvil/hammer who can just yeet up the middle to screw with the opponent’s head. It’s a combo that makes sense, whether it’s in good taste or not…

Aaron Newbom. If you’re an Orruk Warclans player, you know his name as the first player to achieve 5-0 with Kruleboyz. Recently he’s been been a bit of a Traitor and started playing those wet Aelves, but even so, he’s more than qualified to talk about the good old Orruks.

Aaron Newbom: This is definitely a more mobile Big Waaagh list than you usually see, picking lots of small fights while plugging away with bolt Boyz and stacking up Waaagh until the brutes can close in and smash what’s left.

Having this many small mobile units let’s him play the mission really well and go very aggressive when he chooses too. An interesting build for sure.

As Jon and Josh both write for us on occasions and they faced each other in the last round of the competition, we thought it may be fun to have them do the write ups for each others list….

Joshua Bennett: Have you ever looked at a list and said to yourself whelp this is going to suck. That is the general feeling you get when you look across the table and see this list. If you haven’t played this list yet, don’t worry, I’m going to explain why stubbing my pinky toe in the middle of the night is more fun than playing against this.

First let’s talk about Helon. This is the very popular subfaction to take these days that allows a unit of your archers double shots if you’re within 6 of the unit you are shooting. That doesn’t sound too bad, right? Except combined with speed of hysh, his units move double speed if needed to get within six and just start blasting.

This list is very balanced with the perfect screens (roo riders) that, while in combat, can pile away from you and lock you into combat for a while. Not to mention that their shots also double within six ignore wards and to very good chip damage.

Let’s not forget Teclis. This one man army god model just does what he wants. What’s a miscast? Teclis does not know what that means, as he just auto casts four spells on a 10. I don’t know about you readers. I have trouble rolling sixes to cast. He also knows all the spells in the book, which really makes him a very strong support hero.

Cathay, alongside teclis, adds yet another support, giving you the ability to shut down low bravery armies down for turns upon turns with her warscroll spell. She is also who you normally have in the tower to get you the sweet rerolls and plays to cast.

Sentinels do what sentinels do and shoot you from afar, with a little help from the plus one to cast from Teclis the power of hysh spell that allows them to do mortal wounds on fives and sixes cranks up the potential of dps to pick off your units and stay safely away from you.

This list is very good at controlling its opponent and not letting its opponents play with their toys. And in the hands of Jon Anderson well lets just say. Stubbing your pinky toe in the middle of the night is a walk in the park!

Jon Anderson: Here today, I’m reviewing Josh Bennetts’ list that I had the pleasure of playing in the finals at the Smokey Mountain GT this past weekend.

I’m a big fan of this list. It plays similarly to a Namarti Reaver list I played in the latter part of last year. It’s deceptively hard to pilot in that you need to ensure the Seekers are able to distribute their toxin to increase the effectivity of the Archers so your threat assessment needs to be on point. Our match had a giant piece of Wildwood in the middle of the board, so we played a very cagey game. Which I believe favors the Castle.

The turn one depravity generator is the Masque, dropping her just outside of 3 and electing her to be the Euphoric Killer. I’m not usually a fan of taking first turn, but given this list is a one drop, you have almost total control over the turn 1 priority.

Josh would have beaten me, if not for an early misposition with sigvald, so I’m not expecting him to make that mistake twice. Next time we play, it’s gonna be a barn burner.

We’re lucky we have a fairly active discord now (closing in on 1.1k members), and it just so happened that Clay is a member! So, in his own words, here’s how his list works….

Clay Franchere: Gutter Runners and Slynk + Clawpack all deepstrike 9″ and 6″ away, respectively (but wholly within 6″ of any terrain piece) and shoot mortal wounds on 6’s. Slynk and his Clawpack are great GC assassins thanks to a small footprint, fight first, and mortals on 6’s in melee as well

I had a great day 1 going 3-0 with some difficult matchups, but day 2 against Josh’s Slaanesh marked the end with a close but hard fought game. It’s important that Gutter Runners have good target prioritization and I didn’t make the best use of them that game and a priority roll ended up closing out the game with a summoned Keeper of Secrets (hint, don’t give Slaanesh free Depravity)

I also played into my teammates’ Oakenbrow list, which I lost early on due to a fatal deployment error, making me lose Skreech turn 1 with a +5 to charge Durthu. Skaven lists are very fragile overall, so screening and understanding threat ranges on your opponents armies is more crucial than normal as you don’t quite have the ability to tank any wounds caused by mistakes

Overall, I’m a huge fan of this compared to some other lists I’ve run, and I will definitely be playing it again in the future.. but Doomwheels are calling my name

Top Three AoS Lists for Wargames for Warriors 2023

Advertisements

This is the top three AoS lists for Wargames for Warriors that took place in Utah, USA on the 20th and 21st of May. It involved 22 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

Short Announcement

As a group, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to find the time to write commentary on the tournaments as they crop up. You may have seen this through a few days where there isn’t an article posted at all.

To combat this, the decision has been made to publish the top three without comments. Where possible, writers will then revisit in the future to add comments if they feel its necessary.

I’m sorry that this is the route we’ve had to take. The only other option in the shirt term would have been to stop producing top 3 articles, but we really didn’t want to do that.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

Lots of head winds for Slaanesh since their book dropped with SBGL, KO, OBR and Khorne all vying for attention. We’ve seen a lot of Slaanesh armies podium but not always take first. Here we have first, with with an absolutely gorgeous army of mortals making this very accessible. We don’t often talk about this but apart from the Leaders and twinsouls you can build the rest of the army from the Vanguard kit.

So many sacrifices, I mean mortals, this list is designed to generate as many DP as quickly as possible while spreading you out. Whether its from Temptation (Archers), Euphoric Killers (Twinsouls) or Born of Damnation (Epitome) this list is going to generate a lot early. But the Grand Strategy is Selfish Desire, summon no daemons during the battle, no instead this army is taking advantage of Revel in Depravity. They are gambling you can’t kill them fast enough to avoid them gaining enough DP for the whole army to be at -1 to hit, Mortal wounds (MW) on 6s and a 5+ ward. At that point all of these frail mortal units become very tanky.

The list makes a lot of sense when you look at it like that, the Seekers can take objectives early with their movement and if targetted grant DP. The Blissbarbs stay back and pepper you forcing Temptaions with the Twin Souls as a screen. At the centre there is Gluttos who buffs the army and makes it hard to charge but can allow units to fall out of combat before they are struck back (in their and your combat phases) with Phantasmagoria. Then there is the Epitome to hunt any GCs or be a GC, Dark Crown lets him reduce attacks to 1 for something at the start of the game. That’s on top of extra rend and damage from Strength of Godhood.

This isn’t some fancy list tech, the army had to be handled and moved very carefully, until they generate enough DP it’s very fragile, except Gluttos and the Epitome. They are also a bit of an emergency button, if that’s all you have left you are still going to be able to push out a lot of damage and still score Battle Tactics. In the end this combination did very well beating out eveything except Sylvaneth treelords. There may be justice here, First beat second head to head and lost to third while second lost to first and beat third.

Oh hey look it’s not Legion of Blood!

Turns out Vyrkos is pretty damn rad as well huh? The fluffier sub-faction of the book (although…troubling, this list has no wolves…) is the home of choice for chaff, given it can utilise a heroic action to bring models back over a deadwalker’s starting strength and also, once per game, just summon a pack of 10 direwolves.

The zombie and Deathrattle wall is backed here by the usual synergy-foot heroes, Graveguard blob, plus Radukar as a fantastically annoying (with his -1 to hit and wound) harassment piece who can also act as a nice trigger for the ‘hero then another unit fights’ Vyrkos ability.

Paired with two units of Blood Knights as fast movers who are part anvil, part hammer and packed neatly into a 2 drop double bat-reg, this is a much more flexible take on Soulblight that excels at board control and has mad levels of chaff recursion.

Of course – it lost to Slaanesh, which is the problem in this meta – this many bodies is just an irresistible depravity party for the purple pervs – an unfortunate scissors/rock scenario perhaps which is, of course, why Legion of Blood is the premier tournament choice at the moment. A shame that the one match up is probably keeping the other Soulblight factions from succeeding at a tourney level. Kudos to Aaron either way!
