Top Three AoS Lists for Lay low the Tyrants Grand Tournament

As you may have noticed, we’re very behind on our Top Three lists. So, to correct this, we’ll be posting top threes over the next couple of weeks without comments. Many of the lists you’ll have already seen in past articles, so hopefully, you won’t miss the comments too much!

This is the top three AoS lists for the Lay low the Tyrants Grand Tournament that took place in Germany on the 21st and 22nd of October. It saw 39 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

Lodivicus: Just weeks off his 5th place finish at Wappler Harvest, Tristan returns with a slight modification to the list he played there. Does his list follow the current Jaws of Mork core trend? Yes, yes it does! To review (yet again), the currently trending core includes Skragrott, a Squigboss, a Madcap Shaman, Boingrot Bounderz, Squig Herd, Gobbapalooza and the Bad Moon Loonshrine. Though the same warscrolls appear again, the quantity of the battleline units varies more than most. So how does Tristan’s version compare to what we’ve been seeing?

Just like last time, his Madcap Shaman surrenders the more popular Moonface Mommet/Hoarfrost combo in favor of Moonface Mommet/Merciless Blizzard. He also doesn’t go down the popular path of adding a second Andtorian Locus (and associated battalion) in favor of adding Grinkrak (and double Battle Regiment) as he did at the previous event.

But the one big change from his previous list comes in the battleline units. In the previous event, Tristan ran two Squig Herd units (one single reinforced and one double reinforced). This time he chooses to drop the single reinforced unit of Squig Herd in favor of adding a single reinforced unit of Boingrot Bounderz. This brings his list closer to that of the core lists we’ve been seeing over the last while, while retaining his support unit choices.

Congratulations to Tristan on going undefeated in the event and his 2nd place finish. Small tweaks can have big payoffs!

TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000

Roland Rivera: To the surprise of no one, Null Myriad has performed very well in a spellcasting-centric season, as its potential 2+ spell ignore makes it very good at fending off money spells from its opponents. This combines with OBR’s combat prowess to make for a potent army indeed.

As with all OBR lists, the thing that makes this all tick is the Heroes. Katakros is perhaps the best support Hero in all of Age of Sigmar, and he features prominently here as a source of buffs and healing/model recovery. A Boneshaper with the Artisan’s Key gives the list even more healing, as well as a potential home run offensive buff in Hoarfrost. The Soulmason is great at buffing Mortek Guard, and can force critical spells through with the Dark Acolyte command trait.

Speaking of Mortek Guard, while they aren’t quite the defensive studs they have been in the past, they pack quite the punch these days, especially with the plethora of buffs this list has available for them. They can get +1 to hit and +1 to save from Katakros, +1 to wound from the Soulmason’s Soul-Guide spell, and +1 Rend from the Bludgeon command ability. That kind of buffing will take their offense from “meh” to “wow” very quickly. The Harvester can take some of the risk out of relying so heavily on 1-Wound infantry models with a 4+ save by offering even more healing on top of what the Boneshaper and Katakros provide.

Beyond that, the list features ubiquitous choices in Kavalos Deathriders for utility and Immortis Guard to form the solid center the army needs to impose its will on the midboard. While this list has a couple of interesting choices that you don’t always see out of OBR, it has paid careful attention to its fundamentals, and is thus a strong choice.

  1. Curse those boingy squigs! They shouldn’t be battleline, nor should they be 2 wounds…they’re on 25mm bases! The MW battleshock thing should be on a 4+ and so should the recursion on the models from the herders. Just so OP. (can you tell I’ve been squigged over and over again?)
