Top Three AoS Lists for the Age of Sigmar GT: US Open Tampa

This is the top three AoS lists for the Age of Sigmar GT: US Open Tampa that took place in the US on the 14th and 15th of October. It saw 78 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament. There were Warhammer 40k and Kill Team events running in parallel.

Walter Brock: Today we’re looking at an aggressive list that went 5-0. Starting off we have the normal Null Myriad selection to stop opponents’ offensive spells.

Grandstrat we have Spellcasting Savant. Another standard in OBR list construction is due to how well the units fit together. This Grandstrat forced the opponent to come deal with the OBR if they want to stop it.
Most of what we see is what would be considered part of a standard OBR list. Arkhan, one unit of Immortis Guard, Deathriders and an Ossifector, and maybe a unit of 2 Morghasts. That’s where the Similarities end. Taking a more unique approach from the Slower grinding style of OBR lists. Instead of using the katakros + Arkhan double trouble style list. This player has opted to instead include a unit of 4 more Morghasts. Adding up to two units of 4 Morghasts. There is also the inclusion of a Liege Kavalos. Letting one of the Morghast units receive extra attacks.

From what we can see from this list. The Morghasts are the star of the show. Moving “13” inchesd for a command point makes them much faster than the standard hammer that we usually see in Immortis guard. They also turn off Command abilities to units within “3” inches. Meaning no unleash hell against these Hard-hitting Heralds of Nagash. If they roll an 8+ to charge they can also fight first. Meaning that if either unit gets an 8 or higher then both units can unleash all their damage without fear of losing models. Lastly Morghasts have a 5+ ward while wholly within “12” inches of a Hero. Arkhan and the Liege are fast enough to keep up with the Morghasts so this Aura will be up pretty much all game.

So, we know Morghasts are fast, hit hard, and have some great utility attached to them due to turning off Commands, but what makes them work? Well, that’s all the buffs we can attach to them and what the rest of the Characters add onto them.
Starting with the Ossifector. His unique buff can give a unit of Morghasts and extra point of Rend. That make them Rend 3 now. The Ossifector spell can let if target two units so both units are reaching rend 3. The Ossifector also has a “9” inch Aura of +1 to wound, Making the Morghasts wound on 2s now. The buffs from the Ossifecter alone are scary, but we can go even higher.

The Liege as described before can give one of the Morghast units an additional +1 attack. Bringing one unit to 4 attacks each.

Arkhans casting helps even more with bringing the damage over the top. Empowering Nadirite weapons causes the hit roles to explode on 5s instead of 6s. Drain Vitality will reduce the target enemy units save rolls by 1. Bringing the Morghasts basically to Rend 4. Not much is getting a save against that. Lastly are the commands you can issue to Morghasts. All out attack will let them hit on 2s or you can use Bludgeon and give the Morghasts an extra Point of rend on their attacks. Essentially making them an effective rend 5 if everything described above is up and running. This makes Morghasts one of the single hardest hitting units in the game and that can kill almost anything apart from Models with rules that Limit how much damage they can do.
This whole list sits as a one drop so this list will be deciding who will be going first more often than not.

Danny Wadeson: DoK don’t have the widest selection when it comes to list building, but being able to force Mindrazor through with primals has certainly given the faction a chilly shot in the tail nevertheless. Khailebron is the ‘sneaky’ sub-faction, allowing for regular teleporting which, obviously, is pretty useful for snagging objectives and battle-tactics, with obvious ‘Surround/Destroy’ and ‘Intimidate Invaders’ synergies.

Beyond that, the list is pretty cookie-cutter, with Morathi and the bow sneks backed up by a cadre of stab sneks, with 2x Khinerai for auto-scoring one of their Tome battle tactics and then generally being fantastic fast scoring pieces from then onwards. It’s also Gavin Grigar, which helps!

Once again, we’re lucky to be joined by Pete Atkinson of Plastic Craic fame! Everyone knows he loves him some Gargants, so who better to comment on King Brodd’s Stomp, than him?


BANG! Brodd’s Stomp rampaging to a 5-0, and hats off to Christopher Schelling for being the first to achieve it with an Army of Renown (that I’ve seen, anyway).

As a quick recap of what the army does, it survives: Brodd has 40 Wounds on a 5++ ward as long as he has a buddy nearby, and the CT which you’ll always take heals Mega Gargants in a bubble around the bearer each time they fight.

Every list starts with Brodd and two Gate-Breakers, for some scary output on top of that solid foundation, so 75% of your units and 50% of your Enhancements are self-selecting; but if that sounds like it puts the army on rails, don’t worry because:

  • Armies of Renown are a walled garden by design, and you can still explore more freely with the subfactions in the main Battletomes; and
  • There’s quite a bit of nuance in the 4th unit slot and your artefact choice

If you’re taking a 4th Mega ahead of 3x Solo Babies, at that point it comes down to a Beast-Smasher or (Christopher’s choice here) a Warstomper to come in at 1970 points. I reckon he’s bang on the money, because the Triumph bid has a sneaky double benefit in Sons of Behemat armies: the +1 to wound is matched by extra juice from denying your opponent their Battleshock Triumph (remembering you also deny IP via your Terror ability). Watching your opponent’s shoulders slump when they lose half an elite unit to Battleshock is a high you’ll be chasing for the rest of your days.

Then you’ve got the choice between the Arcane Tome (which was taken here) for the Unbind and access to Mystic Shield or the Amulet of Protection, which also gets you a Nullstone artefact.

My own preference is the latter, because you can troll the shit out of your opponents with a 5++ ward on Broddley, a 6+ Ward from the Amulet, a 4+ Magic ignore from the Nullstone and maybe a 6+ ward on your 4th Mega via King Brodd chanting Bless. 4 Megas, 4 Ignores. There ya go, deal with that ya bastard.

The hidden benefit of the Arcane Tome option is that it makes your opponent work for the Slaughter of Sorcery Grand Strat, which is an increasingly popular choice for amies without a good one in their book, and which would have been a home run in Christopher’s final game here vs Khorne for example. I actually think I prefer it ahead of the Overshadow that Christopher has gone with here, although I’m sure that will have him and his 5-0 crying all the way to the trophy cabinet.

The army scores Battle Tactics well, and it contests primary objectives really well. Its combat is spikey as hell, but that’s ok – you’re not in a rush to table your opponent, they’re the ones that are on the clock while you just passively wrack up VPs. And because your army hunts in packs, you’ll usually have a second or third bite at the cherry when your 500-point combat unit outputs literally 0 damage, which every Gargant player can confirm does happen.

What beats it? For all the fun new interactions with chucking terrain, the army is back to being a DPS test at the end of the day. I’d be confident that I could start knocking Megas over quickly enough with my Ironjawz for example, but Squigs or STD could do just as good a job. I personally got my arse handed to me by BOC when I was recently running a similar list, too: another army with infinite damage anywhere they want it, but in this case with the added bullshit of yanking units out of Ward and Healing range.

So well done Christopher, a great list and a great result. For all the sooking about Sons of Behemat they look absolutely epic on the table, and as someone who’s played against them loads, I’ve got no dramas at all with them coming back into the meta. Bring it on.

Patrick German: Jonathan has opted for one of the few Wizards that can be included in a Khorne army. Be’Lakor makes a great tech piece due to Dark master, and the addition of Mystic Shield goes a long way to improve a Bloodthirster’s 4+ save. He also opted to include three bloodthirsters (counting Skarbrand) and is banking most of his damage output on the Rage-thirster and Skarbrand, both of which can be reliable damage dealers. The Halo of Blood on the Wrath of Khorne thirster provides the Rage-thirster with fight first, in a roundabout way, and Ar’gath is a great inclusion to block any wards that might prevent his mortal wounds from going through. It would be a near-guaranteed death sentence for whatever unit those three decided to team up against.

For all other purposes, Jonathan looks like he’s banking on summoning some infantry in for objective holding a damage. The bloodreavers are great for summoning tithe points, but their defensive profile and speed can leave something to be desired. The Flesh hounds are better for scoring battle tactics, and they’re slightly more durable than the Reavers, but they still die quickly to any dedicated assault.

All-in-all, Jonathan has combined excellent damage potential with reliable ways of scoring battle tactics, and his excellent piloting achieved a 4-1.
