Roland Rivera: Given that this tournament was held after the most recent Battlescroll and that it seems to have applied its rules (as evidenced by the points cost on the Claws of Karanak), I think it’s pretty surprising to The Coven of Thryx still being used in a Khorne list. It’s a pretty unpopular inclusion nowadays (since its spells can automatically fail on a 5+), but the endless spell popping up automatically at the start of the game and being replaced automatically when Horrors die near the Magister ameliorates that risk of failure a bit.

This list in particular was all-in on cheap fodder units to toss in front of the Coven’s endless spells to make Tzeentch Chaos Spawn – Karanak, Garrek’s Reavers, the Claws of Karanak, and the Bloodreavers all qualify for this purpose. Skarr Bloodwrath is also present in this list as a cheap, reusable source of Blood Tithe. Beyond that, we have Skarbrand as a one-man band, the Bloodthirster of Insensate Rage as a big lotto ticket that can turn off Wards, a couple of Priests to access the excellent prayer scripture, and a somewhat uncommon Command Trait in Favoured of Khorne (which gives you 1 Blood Tithe point to start the game).

While we likely won’t see many Khorne lists built with the Coven going forward, the rest of the pieces are synergistic and powerful enough that Khorne should remain a contender going forward.

TOTAL POINTS: 1960/2000

Roland Rivera: I love me a good brawler list, and boy can this list brawl. Each and every one of its troops is a threat, especially when they are the recipients of the Violent Fury buff from one of the Warchanters. The decision to make Gobsprakk the General might seem like a curious one, since it means the list misses out on a command trait, but it does so to gain access to an easy Battle Tactic in Take Dat, Ya Suckers!

The troop lineup is a murderer’s row, each with its own unique advantages. Ardboyz have the strongest armor and are fresh off a points cut, Brutes are strong tech against blobs of low-Wound models, Gore-Gruntas have the best move speed, and Brute Ragerz do the most damage point-for-point while offering a bit of extra speed with their ability to run & charge. The combination of these attributes with the Weirdnob’s Great Green Hand of Gork will let you pick your fights in ways that you’re favored to win.

The lineup is rounded out by Big Waaagh! mainstays in the Wurrgog Prophet and the aforementioned Gobsprakk and Warchanters. I’m somewhat iffy on the choice of extra enhancement Gary took for his Warlord Battalion (is an extra spell on 2 casters really the best of what’s available?), but everything else is a masterful exercise in listbuilding, even if the record itself is a bit weaker than what we typically see out of a podium list.

ENDLESS SPELL

OTHER
20 x Grave Guard (320)**
– Seneschal
– 2 x Standard Bearer
– 2 x Hornblower
– Great Wight Blade

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Andtorian Acolytes
**Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Roland Rivera: Seeing Legion of Night featured in a list article is no surprise; it’s been by far the most consistently performing Soulblight subfaction (though the record on this particular list is a bit lower than we typically see for a list with this high a placement). The mobility tricks afforded by Mannfred & Co. allow skilled pilots to create advantageous positions with ease.

The lineup here is pretty standard fare: blobs of Summonable troops to take punches and leverage the Unbending Will command trait, Grave Guard to counterpunch, Mannfred and a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon to act as big, mobile threats, and a foot Vampire Lord to carry the command trait and artefact while juicing up the Grave Guard. Some lists go for more of a mix in the Summonable department, but David doubled up on the 2 mainstays in Fell Bats and Zombies, and put in a bit of interesting tech in the form of the Aethervoid Pendulum.

While the formula for Legion of Night is well established at this point, knowing what it does is only half the battle. Outmaneuvering a list capable of so many different movement tricks is easier said than done.
