Changecaster, Herald of Tzeentch (110)

Erich: Jamie brings a truly unique Disciples of Tzeentch list for an impressive 4-1 finish, dropping a single game to Gloomspite Gitz. At a high level, this list wins by generating efficiencies with inexpensive mortal components, layering buffs that can hand out+1 Hit / +1 Wound / Crit 2 hits / +1 Damage to otherwise underwhelming infantry blocks while piling on mortal wound damage from casters/burning.

Starting with the standard components, the army goes for the Lore of Change. Mortal heavy armies will often skew towards the Lore of Fate to get access to Shield of Fate (5++ and -1 hit if you have 4 Destiny Dice). However, with this build eschewing large blocks of wound dense Tzaangor and including 5 casters, Lore of Change’s Bolt of Change provides strong MW output. The Manifestation Lore is key to this army, with the Sigil of Tzeentch amping units to D2 (more later on this) and more importantly handing out Hit/Wound/Attack bonuses to nearby friendly units. The other manifestations have good utility, but Sigil is THE REASON to take this lore.

Fateweaver is the core around which this list runs and makes everything sing together. His reliable casting brings the Sigil out buffing combat units, his war scroll spell turns off commands or reduces save while his shooting starts enemies Burning to activate the Changecaster. Fateweaver’s presence in the Masters of Fate SoG sub faction activates Crit 2 hits for mortals. He can also reliably pull off Fold Reality for a key teleport and/or Transformed into Spawn to turn off shooting, restrict movement, and generally cause havoc.

The other two Daemons who join him focus on the burning mechanic with the Changecaster providing +1 hit when a Burning target is within 12” (Key for mortal units hitting on 4’s). The Changecaster also brings along a sneaky extra 3 rally dice for Daemons, keeping Fateweaver alive with a Fold Reality into Rally range and then 9 Healing dice. The Fateskimmer lighting enemies on fire, throwing out extra chip damage and keeping pace with Enlightened on Disc to activate Crit 2 hits.

The other mortal heroes are high mobility with the Magister on Disc turning on Run and Charge for the Tzaangor Enlightened and the SoG Ogroid able to teleport to any Arcanite in combat to add his combat heft. With the standard loadout of -1 hit, cause burning, and organic 4++ when near an Arcanite he is surprisingly difficult to kill.

The recipients for all of these buffs are two flavors of mortal cultist, Jade Obelisk and SoG Kairic Acolytes, and Tzaangor on Discs. The Obelisk are Surprisingly difficult to kill with an Ethereal save; they screen well and are inexpensive enough to throw forward with Fold Reality. The SoG Kairic Acolytes are able to get to 3/2/-1/2 with Crit 2 Hits and 20 Attacks with a surprising regularity (this is close to DoK Witches w/ Mindrazor territory).

The Enlightened can travel 32” (14” move + 6” run + 12” Charge) in a turn (a 12” charge is much easier when Fate Dice can power it) which means nothing is quite safe. This warps adversary deployments and lets them fly from one side of the board to another – avoiding threats and picking their targets. If they need some help, the SoG Ogroid can hop in with them to join the fight.

Props again to Jamie for a take of DoT that is much different from what we have seen in the mainstream. This list has a lot of tools mounted onto some fragile delivery mechanisms. It takes nuance and skill – not to mention the cognitive load to balance all the interactions and synergies. Running 5 games with success is a showcase in both skill and endurance. It also makes me wonder if I need to pick up another box of Kairics . . .

Faction Terrain
Zontari Endrin Dock (20)

Fittsy: So we’ve been seeing a bit of the Magnate’s Crew since the nerfs to KO. Now we’ve got the relatively oddball choice to go for the Pioneer Outpost Army of Renown. This means no big ships, no flying heroes, and pretty wild army rules.

Pioneer Outpost is entirely focussed on the KO faction terrain, the Zontari Endrin Dock. It is effectively a series of mini-battle tactics where if you fulfil them you get a bonus for the rest of them game. Now… There are two key ones which give massive bonuses and three others. Secure Investments required you to kill an enemy within 3″ of the Dock but let’s you ignore rend on Gunhaulers and the terrain which is awesome! Aggressive Acquisitions is the game changer here and if you have a unit deep in each quarter, the enemy can’t set-up within your territory or 9″ of an objective you control. For some armies this rule alone is worth taking.

Why take this AoR over Vanilla KO though? If you’re looking for a different play style, this will certainly give you that! It allows you to go pretty wound dense with good saves whilst maintaining good mobility.

Nathan has really leaned into this with cost effective units. As the points are on the Vongrim currently, they’re looking really good. On top of that, this army still has a lot of movement potential with them and the Gunhaulers. The Harpoon Crew in particular with their combat phase move can also be really hard for opponents to deal with.

This list absolutely peppers opponents from shooting across the army and hasn’t taken even a single unit of Skywardens. Not a list for the faint of heart and although I can see how it does well, I’ve got a lot of respect for a 4:1 with this. Great work out there Nathan!

Plague Monks (140)

Kieren Coates: The list was built with the idea of KO having a strong presence in the local scene – as it has no monsters the entire army can be obscured making it a very strong anti shooting list

Further with 80 bodies of chaff it’s happy to play the points game, with the idea of running two seperate squads

One squad is 4 doom flayers and 20 clanrats which occupy one side of the board, and the rest of the army bubbles up and walks up the other far side of the board

If you can turn the map into a side by side battle across the board, it becomes far easier to get scouting and restless which plays into its strengths

The list is somewhat slow, without run and charge or 3D6 charges so it can’t threaten at a distance, but it’s a strong castle with incredible counterpunch ready to kill anything that comes close, while scoring objectives and tactics and remaining hidden from long range shooting threats

We’re still seeing Nighthaunt doing well post battle scroll despite the points increases and nerf to Death Stalkers. This is a list bringing together some of the standard elements with a little extra spice. Taking Death Stalkers is still the go-to, and Morbid Conjuration is still a good pick.
But… No Dreadblades! We’re seeing a bit of a shift away from the Dreadblades now with the change to their teleport only working in your own turn. In discussions, we’re seeing people questioning whether that’s needed while there are plenty of other good options available to Nighthaunt (as the results are showing).

We’ve got Awlrach and a reinforced unit of Bladegheists for those good ol’ Nighthaunt teleport shenanigans, and this can help the Bladegheists get close to the enemy’s general or honour guard unit. Dropping just 7” away, you’ll still want to keep a command point in your pocket for rerolling that charge, but this helps keep your opponent on their toes too.
Reikenor is still good value for points, and he’s practically an auto-take if Lady Olynder isn’t on the list. We’re still seeing Hexwraiths after their points increase… although we’re seeing less of them in lists like here, which is 2 MSU units.
Pushing this list up to 3 drops is a Cruciator (who I’m a bit of a fan of both because of the damage reduction but also because I just painted mine up end of last year and I’ve not been putting on the table much since then). Together with a unit of Craventhrone, they are both sources of damage to help get that buff off for the 2 reinforced units of Harridans. We see this sort of tactic used here and there, and it looks like it has really paid off for this list!

First off, congrats to Lukas on placing 3rd with this one! We see a lot of the standard picks here even after the points increase and nerfs. Even with that, Lukas is keeping up the wins for Nighthaunt!

Death Stalkers, 2 drops, Morbid Conjuration is all as expected at this stage for NH. With the pretty popular Executioner with RotSH and Lightshard (for returning a unit OPB and an extra attack OPB).

Lady Olynder is leading the charge (although not literally, keep her away from dangerous fights!) with a nice mix of reinforced Bladegheists and Banshees who bring the punch for this list. Lady O is still great for the 2 casts (which pairs well with a nice Morbid Conjuration), bringing models back and debuffing the enemy. Despite the points increasing, we’ve still got 20 Hexwraiths across this list. We’ve got Awlrach hiding down there in the 2nd regiment, who is great for teleporting those Bladegheists and Harridans to outside of 7”. Don’t forget to save a command point to reroll that charge if you need to!

This ends up looking like a relatively simple list… which, as we all know, helps a lot as you start pushing into the 4th and 5th games. Good on ya, Lukas!

Well done to Filip on the 4-1 with the ratmen, with what I might say is probably one of the most well-rounded lists Skaven can currently run

Combining some ratling gun shooting, with the two big boys of the day between thanquol and deceiver to skirmish, backed by a sizeable 40 clanrats and 20 night runners to take objectives and tactics and leaving room for 6 rat ogors as a short range hammer

To add to the versatility of the list, it’s running every single clan except for clan pestilence – so I would of loved to have seen one of the night runner or clanrat packs replaced with the new Skabbick plaguepack, truely being a masterclan list with every clan represented

Overall, the list does a bit of everything, which is why it beat a bit of everything, playing in all phases and able to stand a fight to any army that’s on the other side of the table

Once again, well done on the 4-1 and the well-rounded list

Fittsy: We’ve got Thomas taking a 1st here with a 5-0 with a Nagash list.
We’ve got a lot of the standard choices in this list to go together with Nagash. Reinforced Bladeghesists and Hexwraiths who are great for returning at full or half strength. Together with a single Dreadblades and another 5 Hexwraiths. The Knight of Shrouds is a common enough pick with a list like this to be the bearer of Ruler and Lighshard (OPB return half a unit and OPB +1 attack). The KoSoS’ speed helps it to stay out of trouble and be where it needs to be to ping off that +1 attack or chain activate the Hexwraiths with a +1 to hit.

Round 5 has seen Thomas go up against NH… a matchup in which Nagash has come out on top to round out the 5 wins, nice work there Thomas!

Kieren Coates: Skaven is in an interesting place right now, with a variety of lists going 4-1 and a variety of different units, so by no means is this the only way to play the book, but one that I have found works nicely for my play style

Inspired by Mechrat (Keegan) and Warpfire Mini’s (Jordan) and fusing the best parts of all of our lists, we came together with a stable core of 1600ish points with our lists differing on the last 400 to suit each local meta

In a world where no-one runs chaff or models, the list is designed to easily score with 100+ models, recursion, movement tricks, while also being able to use scalpels to take out key hammers and slow the enemy down

The monks job is to not die, get in the way and survive on the objectives, use their end of turn pile in to move from out of combat and lock enemies in combat in their turn (note – this may not still be true in the new book).

Monks deal mortals on pile, mortals on death, and a high volume of low rend attacks, so they’re surprisngly reliable for getting damage in

Jezzails in priority target means they are able to kill enemy general regiments quickly, as well as provide cover fire

Thanquol is a great all rounder, especially at using skitterleap during the opponents turn at +1 to cast – if the enemy makes the fault of killing him or the deceiver for a tactic, just teleport them out to safety

The deceiver is incredibly tricky, and as the list is designed for control games failing 1-2 tactics for the enemy is often enough to call it game, and with our mobility and recursion most armies struggle to stop skaven scoring later in the game

Again – skaven is a great toolbox list and there has been 4-1 lists using over half the book, so there’s plenty of options, and with a new book on the way it’s a great time to worship the horned rat

Patrick German: As a fan of Bloodletters myself, it’s nice to see a list that digs into them so heavily do well. Bloodletters are a very straightforward melee unit with a decent stat line: 2W on a 5+. 6+ ward going to a 5+ after they fight with the formation. hitting and wounding on 3s with crit (mortals). All of this combines for a unit that can weather an incoming unit’s attacks while delivering some punishment of their own. Their recursion also helps with that survivability, so long as you don’t completely wipe what you attack.

Past there you have three heroes that are just there to buff the bloodletters. The Fury-thirster provides a much-needed 3d6 charge that can easily land your letters in combat early. The bloodmaster has a fight phase double-activation that allows those bloodletters to ignore enemy wards. Finally, The Blood Throne provides even more recursion by restoring a destroyed unit at half strength.

Overall this list seems more straightforward than what we saw from Khorne last edition, but clearly met the needs of the tournament, given the 3rd place landing. If you’re looking for inspiration to get a survivable force on the battlefield to tarpit your opponent while you wear them down, this list would be a great way to accomplish your goal.
