In a world where people instinctively associate KO with shooting, here comes Ian to remind us all why you should fear the spear with a VERY spicy Barak Zon list!
As is tradition, this list starts with an admiral and navigator in the classic movement disruption combo with a splash of anti magic.
Then there’s Drekki Flynt. I also had to look this guy up to see exactly what he does, so you’re definitely not alone if you’re not sure what he does. Basically, he shoots like a juiced up khemist and hits like a watered-down admiral. He’s got some subfaction specific rules that we can ignore here. You take him for his ability to put 3 MW on a monster he’s fighting after he’s made his attacks and because he can strip artifacts from enemy characters he’s engaging on a 3+ (if Drekki isn’t embarked). This is a pretty wild ability in the appropriate scenario, and for only 130 points, it’s definitely a low-risk venture!
There’s 3×10 arkanauts to exist on objectives and be super cheap for how good they are.
But you play Zon for the balloons. And brother, this list has got some balloons. 4×3 skywardens and 2×3 endrinriggers. All of these appear to be barebone units without special weapons, which is definitely a reasonable way to run them, but I can’t confirm for sure that’s the loadout. Alternatively, you can load up on drill cannons to gamble your way to victory or take grapnel launchers for just unbelievable mobility.
Regardless, this many balloons in Zon mean that a single unit of 3 skywardens will swing in with 10 attacks at 2/2/-1/2 on the charge and then retreat at the end of combat, likely dealing d3 MW as they do so. That’s pretty fun.
It gets even more fun when you pack em in a frigate and then disembark the unit after charging. Perhaps 2 units, in fact. Because 20 ASF attacks at 2/2/-1/2 will put in some SERIOUS work. They can also shoot a little, too, but the prudency chute upgrade on a frigate implies a more… direct approach.
This list is rounded out by 2 skyhook frigates (likely being healed by endrinriggers) to further put the hurt on monsters and ferry the little dwarf bombs to their targets. Two battle regiments are a very good bid for dictating turn order, and being doubled by this list would be a disaster for the opponent.
Thank you, Ian, for putting together this absolute joy of a list and showing the world that balloons aren’t just for children. Congratulations on a strong finish and extremely cool list!
