Old World: An Unofficial Community FAQ

Over the last few months, I’ve been privileged to be part of a group of contributors who have been developing an Unofficial Community FAQ for Old World.

This document aims to be a tool for interested Tournament Organisers (TOs) and players. Our goal is to provide missing rules, clarify unclear rulings, and explain rules where we believe clarification is needed.

The questions answered in this document are sampled by contributing members and are based on questions from their player base.

This FAQ does not aim to be binding or official in any way and is made with the sole purpose of improving the flow of games. Everyone interested is welcome to participate in our work. If you’re interested in taking part, please join the FAQ Discord server.

To make it easier for everyone, the structure of this document follows the individual phases of the turn. Within the phases, the given FAQs are again ordered by categories (Keywords).7

Remember, the document is searchable via PDF.

How Decisions are Reached

When a question is submitted, contributors will consider whether the question needs an FAQ, or whether Games Workshop has a clear written rule, or an FAQ themselves that answers the question.

If the question is considered ambiguous the contributors will discuss the rule and the possible answers. These are then put to a vote.

If a Games Workshop FAQ is released at a later date which answers the question, the FAQ for this will be removed to avoid any potential confusion.

The PDF is laid out in a clear manner, with sections corresponding to the main rule book. Each question has a voting ID, which the committee can review in case it either needs to revisit the question or remove it from the Unofficial FAQ. References to relevant rules are also included below the question to allow the reader a reference check.

Sunday Hobby Update 3

To try and keep myself painting regularly, I’ve decided to post a weekly hobby. Update of my work from the last week.

While the website has been fairly quiet this week (sorry about that), there’s been a lot going on in the background.

First up, I finally finished 15 Dwarf Warriors. I’ve a fair few more Dwarfs to get through yet though!

Speaking of Dwarfs, Ian and I had our first game in our slow-grow league for Old World. Ian’s Warriors of Chaos won out, but it was a close run thing!

I’ve also been putting together the Operators for Fallout: Factions, which was provided to us by Modiphius for a review – so keep your eyes peeled for that.

I also have my copy of Path to Glory: Ravaged Coast, which I’ll be reviewing for the site soon. We’ll also shortly start a new Path to Glory online campaign.

Also for the website, I’m working on a fan made campaign supplement in the style of the 90s ones like Circle of Blood and Grudge of Drong. Expect to see that within the next two weeks. But here’s a sneak peak:

Plus, with the narrative event round the corner, I’m finishing off some bits and pieces before the event kicks off.

And that’s it, until next week. Laters!

Sunday Hobby Update 2

To try and keep myself painting regularly, I’ve decided to post a weekly hobby. Update of my work from the last week.

Not as active this week as time has been at a premium! But I have managed to do some hobby!

Ungrimm Ironfist
I managed to get this fella done who I had ordered just before Christmas. I took time with the hair and the skin, but I’m not so happy with the metals on the axe. So I may have to revisit this one at some point. Perhaps its time to try some NMM.

I also managed to paint strip a few more models, which perhaps the grognards amongst us may enjoy! Some old RTB01 marines….

And that’s it, until next week. Laters!

Woehammer Old World Event: Shadows Over the Border Princes

So we’ve our first Old World Event coming up on March 1st and 2nd and we’ve just finished the first draft of the narrative pack for the event.

As a reminder, this is a 2 day event where players will create a 1,500pt list (which also contains a 1k list within that), and play a series of linked battles culminating in a final doubles game in round 5 for 3,000 points a side.

For tickets and timings, please click on the Woehammer Old World Event in the menu above.

Below you’ll find our narrative pack for the event with all the scenarios included. This is a first draft and depending on feedback from those attending it may well change.

Players will play out their games as normal, but they will also be divided into two teams. The Good and the Evil. If when the event comes around we find we have more Forces of Fantasy than Ravening Hordes (or vice-versa) then some of the Forces of Order will count as having fallen to the dark side, or perhaps some of the Ravening Hordes may be working as mercenaries. Either way, we’ll be able to work it out.

There will be trophies as well! We’ll have a trophy for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed players like any GT as well as Most Sporting and Best Painted. On top of that we may have some other secret awards planned….

The pack below will be added to after the event with snippets of stories from the battles on the day and featuring the players characters as the antagonists. The pack will then be available to download for those wishing to play the games out themselves with their friends.

Hoping to see you on the day!

Hobby Update: Ruined Chapel

I recently purchased and painted a ruined Chapel from Etsy for use in Old World and Silver Bayonet.

It doesn’t come with lights….

It comes in three pieces with the two floor separate and the roof making the third part.

Painting it was fairly simple as I chose to undercoat the model black and then dry brush mechanicus standard grey on the stone with a further dry brush highlight of coral white and mechanicus standard grey mixed 1:4.

The roof was painted in Word Bearers Red and then drybrushed with Mephiston Red and then a lighter drybrush of Wild Rider Red.

The final part was the wood. Which I painted with baneblade. The whole model was then shaded with Agrax Earthshade.

Finally, using Geek Gaming basing materials was the simple finish to the model.

Painting the whole model took around 2 hours start to finish.

The wolves close in on the French, who take shelter in a ruined chapel.

The Old World: State of the Game – 10th November 2024

Introduction

If you follow the site, you’ll know that we do in-depth stats for Games Workshop’s Age of Sigmar system. We’ve also been tracking Old World stats at a very high level since it’s release. With the popularity of Old World as a tournament system, we’ve seen the number of events and games steadily increasing over the past year, so much so that we’ve reached a point where we can provide a little more detail into the figures that make up these win rates.

Firstly a disclaimer, these stats are based on events hosted on the website Best Coast Pairings, Stats & Ladders, and Ecksen. We do have plans to add further sites into the database in the future, and we are aware that T3 etc also have their own stats. Our advice is always to look at every source of statistics, this will give you a much more informed idea on the state of the game. Mistakes can be made, if they occur I will update the article as soon as I can with a note as to what has been changed.

The majority of our stats are taken from 2,000 point GT events where legacy factions have been allowed to take part. This is due to these being the most popular events in our database. If you wish to view the data, you can download the file at the end of this article.

Followers of Woehammer will be aware of our Elo ratings in Age of Sigmar, I have tracked these for Old World and do have the data, which is included in the matches tab on the file at the end of the document.

GT Win Rates

GT Win (2,000pts) Rates since 18th July FAQ

We’ve split out the various muster lists for factions that have already received their Arcane Journal. So for Dwarfen Mountain Holds, Kingdom of Bretonnia, Orc and Goblin Tribes, Tomb Kings of Khemri and Warriors of Chaos, you may see up to three different entries for each faction. Each of these are for the muster lists available to them, the Grand Army in the core Forces of Fantasy or Ravening Hordes books, then their two optional muster lists available inside the Arcane Journal. For simplicity we’ve cut any muster list that has less than 20 games on record at GTs.

The figure in brackets denotes the number of games where the Faction and Muster list have been used in a 2,000 point GT. Please note that mirror matches (i.e. Chaos Warriors v Chaos Warriors) have been excluded for the purpose of these statistics.

Faction/Muster List Popularity

The above shows the number of players that represented each combination of Faction and Muster Lists at 2,000 point GT events around the world.

Results Breakdown by % of Wins

The above shows the breakdown of the number of wins players finish with at 2,000 point GT with the given faction and muster list combination. The number in brackets denotes the number of games the faction and muster list combination was used at GT’s.

Once again, faction and muster list combinations with less than 20 games have been removed from this chart.

Faction % Race

Finally just for a bit of fun, the below bar chart race shows the faction % for the last 60 days at the date given at the bottom. This effectively shows the change over time.

Old World Woe-Grow: Dwarfs of Bhurali-Dwar – Part 4 (Grigor Makkson)

Dave, Ian, and I decided to start a slow grow campaign. Ian, who has just started out, wants to get some games in but wants to keep the growth at a slow pace (understandably so considering the cost of our toys).

We’ve now been joined by Joe, which brings our merry little band to four. Joe will be collecting the French.

The campaign will begin at 500 points each, then progress to 1,000 and 1,500 points. They’ll be 3 games each at each points level, with each playing the other once and then a Triumph & Treachery game to round off that points level. I’m sure we won’t at all be keeping track who wins what at each level…..

You can check out our first posts below if you want to get caught up:

I’ve recently finished the leader of my merry band, Grigor Makkson.

Grigor Makkson: The Wandering Runesmith of Karak-Dur

Name: Grigor Makkson

Background: Grigor Makkson hails from Karak Dur, a venerable hold renowned for its skilled artisans and Runemasters. Born into a family of miners and craftsmen, Grigor was drawn to the mystical power of runes from a young age. His innate talent and curiosity eventually earned him the apprenticeship of the esteemed Runesmith, Belgarir Stoneshine, who trained Grigor in the ancient arts of rune-carving, a skill passed down through Dwarven generations.

Under Belgarir’s guidance, Grigor developed a reputation for his meticulous skill, his patience, and his unyielding dedication to the craft. But unlike many Runesmiths who were content to stay within the hold, Grigor possessed a rare yearning for exploration and discovery. This adventurous spirit, uncommon among Dwarves and especially Runesmiths, often led him to volunteer for expeditions beyond the boundaries of Karak Dur.

Grigor has spent decades honing his craft, inscribing weapons and armour with powerful runes to protect his kin and strengthen the warriors of Karak Dur. However, his true passion lies in unearthing lost lore and discovering ancient holds long abandoned. His fascination with Dwarven history and the secrets hidden within the earth make him the perfect candidate for the task that now lies before him.

Beliefs: Grigor is a solemn, thoughtful Dwarf who rarely speaks more than necessary, preferring to observe and listen. His dedication to the Dwarven ancestors and his respect for tradition make him a figure of reverence among his peers. However, he has a more pragmatic view of tradition compared to other Dwarves. While he respects ancient customs, he is not above bending certain rules if it means achieving a greater purpose.

Grigor is deeply aware of the importance of his mission, not only to Fimbur Grimsson but to Dwarvenkind as a whole. The prospect of restoring Bhurali-Dwar and reclaiming the treasures of the past fills him with a sense of purpose. He feels a kinship with the long-departed Dwarves who once called the hold their home and is determined to honour their memory by bringing their legacy back to light.

Notable Deeds

The Exploration of Darkflame Hollow: Grigor led a small expedition to Darkflame Hollow, an ancient Dwarven mine corrupted by Chaos-tainted ores. With his runic expertise, he was able to cleanse certain areas and recover several relics that were thought lost forever. His success in Darkflame Hollow brought him the respect of Fimbur Grimsson and the trust needed to lead the Bhurali-Dwar mission.

The Purging of Skullcleave Tunnel: When Greenskin raiders took over Skullcleave Tunnel, a crucial trade route, Grigor was sent with a small force to drive them out. Using his knowledge of rune magic, he set traps throughout the tunnel, collapsing sections to trap the Greenskins and purging the invaders with minimal losses to his team.
