This is the top three AoS lists for the Lords AoS Tournament that took place in Vietnam on the 25th and 26th of March. It involved 8 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.
As this event had less than 20 players attending there won’t be any list comments here as the guys will be concentrating on the larger events of the week.
Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

ENDLESS SPELLS & INVOCATIONS Spiteswarm Hive (40)
CORE BATTALIONS *Battle Regiment
TOTAL: 1980/2000
This solid list from Lee Wilmot is almost a who’s who of Sylvaneth mainstays. The TLA and WSR combination allows aggression from turn 1, using the free tree placement to enable maximum value Warsong bombs followed by either use of the new realmspell Teeth of Gallet, or Dwellers below for better value on horde units like Squigs or massed cultists. This hero combo works with the strike and fading Kurnoth hunters – buffed by the Spiteswarm Hive – and the revenant seekers to ensure the Sylvaneth hammer is kept healthy and outputting maximum damage while the bows sit on a back objective and pick off wounds, or soften up targets, at artillery ranges. Tree revenants sneak off to pick up objectives and provide shooting protection for the warsong and archrevenant, little scamps that they are.
This lists’ real value is in how few truly poor matchups it has, it is a one drop, can alpha decently and loves the double turn, can score 5/5 Battle tactics consistently and really gives opponents few opportunities to interact with the list on their own terms. Even against lists which push the sylvaneth for board space early, like KotET and BoC the Sylvaneth units are often durable enough to weather the early storm and punch out, or alternatively simply relocate key pieces to safer locations and return to playing the objective game. Well done to Lee on his piloting – 5 games of sylvaneth is quite exhausting and mistakes are heavily punished – he’s done excellently to manage the tournament win with a 4-1-0!

CORE BATTALIONS *Battle Regiment
TOTAL: 1980/2000
Brett: With the new book Beasts haven’t set the world on fire but are providing consistent results even if a little back from their recent peak. Jimmy has gone with the Ungors and a Doombull which aren’t common picks but they have their reasons. The Ungors (and Ungor Raiders) are relatively cheap and meet battleline leaving enough points for an Incarnate. That’s important. With BoC’s herdstone increasing rend on turns 2 and 4 you don’t want to commit too early. Because BoC can ambush (deploy to reserve and bring them on in the first or second round) and fade into the shadows (teleport from within 9″ of the board edge to another location 9″ from the board edge and 9″ from enemy units) they can hide very well. But to do that you need something for your opponent to focus on – the Incarnate.
They need at least 2 rounds to do that and that means you can wait until you have at least -1 rend on everything to commit. The Tzaangors can still score a Battle Tactic first round (Desecrate seems likely) while your opponent tries to deal with the Incarnate. If they don’t then he can make their life hell pretty quickly. Still the list might be a little slow without the teleport. They have access to book tactics which are pretty competitive. The Doombull’s had a bit of a glow up, one of his most useful talents is a command that allows a unit to charge in the combat phase – avoiding unleash hell. He’s a Tunnel Master (teleport) and can use his trumpet to summon Ugors (or raiders) to the cause. The Bray Shaman is along to provide exploding 6s. If anything is alive to reach -3 rend from the Bullgors or Doombull (turn 4) pretty much nothing on the opponents army is going to survive.
Only drawing to Sylvaneth and otherwise winning all of his matches is a great effort. Sylvaneth with their fire and fade, mortal wounds and desire to make you come to them is a solid counter. Otherwise an unblemished run with a new books is a great effort.

We’re honoured to have Skaven aficionado and all-around top bloke Kieren Coates join our team. Kieren is well known on the tournament circuit down under and has featured in past editions of our top three. Who better to talk about the ratmen than him?!
Kieren Coates: A classic mixed arms MSU list with the unique twist of no clan Skryre, the list features 6 independently operating threats able to choke up the board while dealing surprisingly large amounts of damage.
Opting against the 1 drop race, the list has no issues in being forced to go first with 6 rat ogres able to hop through a gnawhole with death frenzy, mystic shield, +1 to wound and +3 to charge, leaving it with an impressive 82% chance to land its charge with one reroll.
If youre able to piece through 36 wounds of pure rat meat, that will fight on death to trade back you may just be unlucky enough for the Master Moulder to roll a 3+ upon the units death to bring the whole pack back to life again for round 2
Even beyond the alpha rat ogres, there is still 20 gutter runners skirmishing with ranged mortals, 2 hell pits ready to clear out any hordes or MSU which are not able to piece through 14 wounds in one swing, one of which is likely to get a mutation for 16 wounds at a 4+ save. at only 210 points, it’s incredibly efficient, and when it dies for some unfortunate souls, it has a 1/3 chance to come back to life with D6 wounds ready to swing again.
If you do manage to hit through respawning, death frenzied rate ogres, skirmished gutter runners and horde clearing hell pits, you still have to deal with the big boss which is the verminlord corruptor with the blade of corruption, 2D6 + 2 attacks (with command trait), often hitting at 2’s, 2’s, -2 rend, 2 damage with 6’s to wound being a whopping rend 3 damage 6. Did I mention he has another horde clearing spell to back up the two hell pits?
Once youre through all of that the real humble MVP of skaven, 40 clanrats for 200 points holding the objectives still need to be dealt with, healing D3 clanrats per pack in every battleshock phase.
Overall it’s lots of melle power with chance to revive, horde clearing power and MSU skirmish combined that many lists cant manage to crack through – well done to Locky

Monster mash hasn’t been the soup of the day for a couple seasons, so it’s nice to see a few heavies make their way back into the Idoneth’s menu. The turtles are going to be very heavy hitters, especially in Nautilar where they count as batteline and get a monstrous action increasing the rend on two of their weapon profiles to -3. Ancient is present to get some extra durability out of the first turtle, but both are there to absorb damage and dish it back out.
The third “turtle” is a krondspine. The addition of the Arcane tome means that the incarnate can be bonded to either the King or the Tidecaster, depending on what the match requires. The lack of druability on Idoneth’s heroes also opens up the option of getting the Incarnate as afar away from the friendly units as possible then just shrugging your shoulders when the bonded hero eventually dies.
Past there the list is self-explanatory. The King does King things. The Tidecaster casts some tides (Steed of, specifically). The reavers fill out the last battleline slot, and act as a decent harassing unit, with the ability to make good use of the turtles’ auras.

Sylvaneth are really putting their roots down recently – and the nice thing is it’s still with a variety of lists – it seems like a great season for them, which is allowing people to flex their list building muscles with them and still do well.
Sune here has gone big tree heavy – with two hero trees and a full complement of treelord battleline. Durthi with the Gladius just absolutely slaps, and when such a threat is backed up by an Ancient (for a source of auto-forest at the start of the game) and a Warsong Rev for nasty casting through said forest (usually) – it’s a hell of a pincer movement.
Making full use of some allied tech, not only has Sune employed the now fairly standard Ghurish battlemage for the additional charge bonus, but he’s also rocking a Zephyros, who is just an absolute bargain basement GC who can also teleport.
Overall, I can see the root to victory for this list just being so many hyper-mobile scoring threats backed up by a killer Durthu that it’s overwhelming trying to keep up. Gratz to Sune on the evil tree 5-0.

A rare HOTE list! Often overlooked in favour of Cabalists casting shenanigans or the battleline and run/charge of KOTET, a HOTE list really wants something to take advantage of that 5+ rally – aaaand 15 Chosen might just be the unit to do it!
Interestingly, Jon has Marked the Chosen as Slaanesh – *outside* of Legion, meaning he’s committing to their native -1 rend being enough, combined with their weight of attacks, to act as the list’s main hammer. HOTE offers a free second banner – so as well as the ubiquitous Eroding Icon on the pinning unit of Knights, he’s taken the Slaanesh banner on the Chosen for an additional attack on the charge – quite possibly relying on the mortal fishing to deal with more heavily armoured targets.
I suppose Be’lakor – whiffy and unreliable as he’s likely to be – does offer the option of locking down the Chosen’s natural predator for a turn or two, allowing them to clean everything else up – although I do struggle to see the logic of not even being able to roll on the EotG table with such a heavy investment of a unit – still, it worked out, and congrats to Jon for a great result!

Kevin Lathers: Now we see how far someone can skew a Fyreslayer list. Gustav has decided to deal with Fyreslayer’s innate slowness by just being able to deepstrike nearly the entire army. This list also lacks the usual Flamekeepers which accompany Vulkite Berserkers in nearly all Vostarg lists.
Between the Celestant-Prime, who can not only deepstrike but guarantee a charge, and three Runesmiters, Gustav can deepstrike all but two units in the list. Vulkites further benefit from this with their built-in +1 to charge rolls, thus making it an 8 on the roll to make a charge out of deepstrike. Twenty of them in GV is quite potent as well, even without the usual Flamekeepers.
I’m not certain how Gustav played things, but it seems the typical action would be to deepstrike two units of Vulkites and a battlesmith, along with the Celestant, leaving another brick with a battlesmith on the field; or deepstrike all three Vulkites and use Tunnel Master to bring a smith closer. In both cases this ends up performing almost like a pseudo-Beasts of Chaos list, only with a lot more wounds on the field and the ability to fight on death.
Once your opponent is boxed-in by warded up blocks of Vulkites and their big-daddy Celestant, holding objectives should be easy enough for the remaining group. It also retains the option of just sitting on an objective with the battlesmiths and making the opponent have to move the vulkites off in order to score anything, which can be daunting with 40 wounds under a 5+/6+ ward and the ability to rally on 4+’s.
Anything that can punch its way out of this is going to prove formidable and without Flamekeepers the Vulkites lose their incredibly hard punch-back ability, fighting on death more than once, and their combat phase charging. Further, having two battlesmiths eats up a lot of points that could move toward other heroes or more Vulkites. This list is sacrificing a lot for its strategy. This may have resulted in the two losses to both Ogors and Big Waagh who, depending on their build, should have no trouble weathering the storm and fighting their way out.
Still, it’s an interesting list with a great performance. Definitely an interesting way to take Fyreslayers.
Allegiance: Cities of Sigmar – City: Hallowheart – Grand Strategy: Mighty Beachhead – Triumphs: N/A

Units 4 x Stormdrake Guard (680)* – 1 x Drakerider’s Lance (Stormdrake-Prime) – 3 x Drakerider’s Warblade – Reinforced x 1 Gotrek Gurnisson (480)* – Allies
With a new book almost here, Adam has proven there is still life in one of the oldest, and probably never the strongest battletomes. In the end, it’s a pretty conventional approach, drawing on really mobile Stormcast allies (Dragons, of course). 3 very magical and small heroes leave a lot of room for a real hero, and Gotrek, at his current 480 points, fits well. Hallowheart really helps the wizards. Each gets an extra spell. That means 2 instances of +1 to wound (Ignite), a heal (Sear Wounds), 4+ ward (Warding Brand), and a mortal wound ward. Soulscream gives a useful teleport if required, and everything is in a Battle Regiment to give options for the initial priority.
The army is really planning to castle. The heroes are effectively buff machines, mostly for the Crossbowman. The Flagellants and Guard are there to screen, and Gotrek can prowl around, ready to pounce on anything that trys to deal with them. They can stand and deliver (with 2 shots each) at 24″ with a fantastic unleash hell. There is still the option to Wildform Gotrek and send him through the Soulscream bridge to harrass something important. And all the while, the Drakes are there to cap and harrass your enemy. With Breathe and Lance, they are very dangerous and hard to manage. Adam lost to fire and fade (Sylvaneth), who really make you go to them, a weakness. And a faction that out castles castles, Fyreslayers. 6th is a very respectable result for cities.

Peter: Luckily, one of our Discord members had seen that Ben had discussed his list on the AoS Coach Discord channel. We reached out and asked if we could use the comments on Woehammer. Ben kindly agreed.
Benjamin Flodda: This was my list this weekend testing the rats for upcoming teams tournaments mostly. Nice bonus to go through the weekend undefeated! I think the list is pretty strong and has play into most things, although it’s pretty fragile and it doesn’t take too much poor positioning for things to start to fall apart. But played carefully, I think it has legs.
So, the warpgrinder is basically to give yourself some deployment flexibility. It gives one-drop opponents something to worry about in their deployment if they plan to give away first, and it requires them to always zone out the rattling cannons. Once the fiends are on the table, they are way too easy to play around imo. So they mostly go in deep strike regardless, although deepstriking clanrats is definitely valid in some cases. And if you place the grinder close to a gnawhole it’s amazing how many points it can score you late-game.
The most fun thing in the list is definitely the clawlord combined with arcane tome and launchon. Everybody expects the boat to be for thanquol (which it certainly can be), but early game you can sling the clawlord into the opponent with the boat (taking a mortal which gives him an extra attack) and with double death frenzy, flaming weapon and with +2 attacks from devious adversary. You can shoot down a screen and often get into fun stuff, turn 1, and with +1 to hit and wound from the warbringer, he can really do work! If you then position him within 3 of something after he fought, if he dies he can fight (this time with 13 attacks on 2+ 2+ and damage 3) or he rolls a 3+ and survives, at which point he can fight in the following hero phase AND when he dies. That little dude took down a megagargant on his own this weekend.

Kevin Lathers: The current GHB is starting to hit its stride and has allowed Greyfyrd to finally shine. This subfaction was always popular, but seldom winning, and now that’s changed. It gives Galletian Champions one extra wound and also two extra artefacts. That’s hard to pass up in the current GHN and Duardin glimmerlust always shines for more treasures.
Ole’s list has some interesting inclusions, particularly a Knight-Incantor and a Doomseeker. The Doomseeker is a cheap GC that can occasionally slap something hard if it can get near its “target.” The Knight-Incantor is a utility piece: he provides an automatic unbind for those pesky Lumineth, Skaven (and indeed, he saw two), and Sylvaneth matches while also giving the army a spellcaster for mystic shield. The biggest oddity here is the “Ash-Cloud Rune” which can block spell casting from targeting units wholly within 12” of the user for a turn. A very situational item that means he was very worried about spellcasting.
But the main crux of his list is the Hearthguard Berserkers and Runefather on Magmadroth. While the Hearthguard Berserkers can hold points and shred anything charging them, the DadDroth is the ultimate in Hammer Technology and with Blood of the Berserker can remove any one threat almost guaranteed. A common setup for the Droth is to use the rend rune, enhance it with the heroic action (or finest hour if the rune enhanced or you don’t need more rend), pray for +1 to wound rolls from the Runesmiter, and send him in as a missile of death.
The Hearthguard Berserkers see the common mix of one unit of poleaxes and one of broad. The broadaxes being buffed by a flamekeeper and benefitting from runes while Poleaxes provide much needed mortal wounds into matchups like Nighthaunt. The flamekeeper can really make Broadaxes shine giving them 3 damage swings, charge in their opponent’s combat phase, or fight on death.
The rest of the list reads as the usual suspects: Runemaster for prayers and fyrewall; Runesmiter for deepstrike and/or Runic Empowerment; and a Nulsidian Battlesmith for spell blocking and wards on the non-HGB.
Overall, the list is going to be a brick on objectives with a dangerous hammer inside.

Except artillery of course but a combination of hammers from Cavalry (Fulminators), Fire support (Raptors – since artillery really isn’t an AoS “thing”) and Infantry (Protectors). Fulminators going up 10 points have made a lot of people look to Desolators and Tempestors but Fulminators on the charge are still the most consistent high damage hammer around. With Celestial Blades from the Knight Incantor and all out defence they are still hitting on 2s and wounding on 2s with -2 rend and 3 damage. Slightly down with the loss of Bounty Hunters they are good enough to make your opponent either tar pit them (looking at you Gitz) or try to manoeuvre around them.
The Protectors have similar tech piece and are another target for the same buffs. They really benefit from the Battlemage (+2 to movement/charge) and Lord Relictor giving them teleport with an effective 7″ charge. And Starsoul maces, mortals on a 2+. They are a great defensive unit as well with 2+ saves. The problem is that both the Fulminators and the Protectors need to charge and are vulnerable to Unleash Hell. And that brings the Raptors out to play. Their long range shooting could remove screens or, just as easily most other ranged units. Scions of the Storm so they can be kept in reserve, Liberators and even Protectors for screens if they are on the board and really only Sentinels to outrange them.
Has to be said that the Lord Relictor is a very busy fellow, what with prayers, spells and Tunnel Master as well as being the general. That’s a weakness of this list in the Galletian Champion era, all of these heroes are needed elsewhere and none are stellar in combat. Losing only to Lumineth in the second round and coming in a very respectable 3rd Simen proves there is still some life in SCE. Can they get a 2nd book this edition already please?

Units 6 x Kurnoth Hunters with Kurnoth Scythes (500)* – Reinforced x 1 10 x Gossamid Archers (420)* – Reinforced x 1
A nice ‘sampling platter’ list here from Thomas. As ever, the core threats are a big blob of Scythe-noth and a Warsong Rev to handle the arcane side of things. Now, traditionally, Kurnoth are pretty ponderous, but with +3 to normal moves *and* charges from the Spiteswarm Hive, and an additional +3 from the Ghurish Battlemage, they now have an average threat range of 21″ – which is somewhat scarier. Of course, because of when both these spells proc, it means the Hunters also retain their charge bonuses if they choose to teleport – so really, very little of the board is safe, and if you don’t have adequate screens or a way to delete the Kurnoth (much more easily said than done given their durability), then you can expect these things to reap the rewards.
The rest of the list is basically supporting tech – a lone Treelord to fill the behemoth slot of the batreg while also offering Rampage access and the sneaky ‘enemy can’t pile in’ tech – Gossamids (reinforced no less!!) to potentially force melee armies to curl up and cry every time they want to charge something useful, or threaten a fair chance of some nasty spike damage – and plenty of dryads for board control and further screening. Never understimate how powerful -1 to hit and wound is by the way – doesn’t matter if you have a rubbish save if you don’t have to roll any dice.
Well done to Thomas for the 4-1 with a balanced list.

The Top Three AoS Lists
Allegiance: Sylvaneth – Glade: Oakenbrow – Grand Strategy: Take What’s Theirs – Triumphs: Inspired – Season: the Burgeoning (6+ ward)

Return of the Ents, a list that is seeing widespread use and success right now. Essentially, this list swaps Kurnoth for Tree Lords giving in 4 mini Gargants. In addition to high-quality attacks, they have a 6+ ward and serve in Oakenbrow, meaning they take twice as long to degrade. Combined with Strike and Fade, it can be very hard to take down a Treelord. Doubly for Durthu. With the Battlemage granting +2 to charge and Spiteswarm Hive, which gives either offensive or defensive buffs, there is a strong chance of 2 Treelords charging either 6 or 7″. Very high probability. This list can also drop back and protect the home objective using the Tree-revenants and Dryads or push out and punish exposed units. The Tree-revenants can snipe out objectives easily as well.
Tricky to play well with the overlapping buffs and the need to position Overgrown wildwoods carefully Sylvaneth are a deceptively powerful army. Their commanding spells, strong mortal wound play, and damaging units make them tough opponents if they are allowed to dictate the flow of play. The ability to use woods to travel makes it very difficult to focus fire (not to mention fire and fade). That’s a standout with this particular list. It’s been crafted very tightly to maximise the flexibility of the Treelords and hinge the off the devastation of the Warsong Revenant. The Arch Revenant with Stubborn as a Rhinox is fantastic, 12″ move and counts as 10 models on an objective but it can only be opposed by a Galletian Champion (the mount word is not on it’s warscroll). Down on wounds to a lot of lists, it outscored and out fought off all comers.
Congratulations to Mitchell, a fantastic win in the face of stiff competition.

Lumineth are back on their bullshit. After a brief period out of the sun as they grappled with Sentinels losing the ability to shoot you without line of sight, Helon lists are back with a vengeance. Turns out that you have to leave your shelter eventually – whereupon many, many sentinels with each unit able to cast Power of Hysh and do MWs on 5s in melee as well as at range will make you wish you’d stayed at home.
Then there’s Teclis, who doesn’t deign to roll dice to cast his spells, nor to dispel yours. Throw in a couple of fast shooty Windchargers and the Rune of Petrification to slow you down while you eat even more MWs and you have the new and improved recipe for elf cheese.
Look – I know it sounds like I’m hating on Lumineth. I’m not. It’s just that James Workshop seems to have a fundamental difficulty understanding how to make this army competitive without relying on two warscrolls, one of which doesn’t even have to roll dice.
Congrats to Paul for beating the mirror match to take the big W!

Morathi and the Spinedog – two timed-unkillable models to pin you down while a giant blob of stab sneks slithers up behind for a 12-ish MW coup de grace. There’s really not much more I can say about this list, other than it’s interesting that it lost to Sylvaneth – which I imagine had the ranged output to whittle things down along with the mobility to avoid being utterly pinned.

Lots of hungry big lads and not an Ironblaster in sight – you love to see it! Luckily, we love to hear about it from the man himself too.
Dennis says this:
The strength of a Meatfist list lies in trading – and this list trades extremely well into melee armies. Every unit (apart from the Yhetees) can kill other hammer units – and most lists have like 2- 3 hammers, so its totally fine if they come in and kill 6 gluttons because it will always be a bad trade for them.
The second strength of this list lies in impact mortals [Ogors roll dice equal to the charge roll and do MWs on 6s, but with +1 to the roll from the sub-faction, and another +1 for units with 3 or more models].
The biggest problem for most melee armies is screens, and this list just absolutely wrecks screens in the charge phase just by charging. Most games I did between 40-60 mortal wounds just by charging. The yhetees are probably the most important part of my list (which sounds strange) because of their eligibility to fight and pile in within 6″. So what I did in most games was tag an enemy unit on the side, make sure you end the pile in 2,9 inch away from the unit. That way it was only possible for my opponent to get one model in, maybe two. Usually they weren’t able to kill the yhetees so they are stuck in combat for one whole turn.Which buys me time to put pressure elsewhere. Yhetees are imo the best techy unit in the ogor book, never leave home without 3 or 6! Downsides about this list, shooting armies and armies which can prevent me from charging (My game 4 was vs. DoK + Khrondspine) are really hard to beat…
Thanks, Dennis, for the insights and big props for bringing such an off-meta list. Not only that – but for beating Lumineth, two Tzeentch lists, and a shooty Ogor list!

Big Waagh, you love to see it! Rumblings of their increased effectiveness in this new season – given their access to some excellent GCs – seem to have been on the money!
Ross has stuck with a fairly traditional core HQ of the double Warchanter (great in general but also give Big waagh points for existing), double Wurrgog ‘laser eyes’ prophets, the Mirebrute and the now probably undercosted Gnashtoof.
MSU Ardboyz are usually crucial in Big Waagh as cheap screens you can overlap in engagements for more Waagh point generation – and they’re backed up by a reinforced unit of Brutes who, while never tanky, are certainly less vulnerable with bounty hunters gone.
A token unit of gore gruntas as ‘fast’ flankers and one reinforced unit of Boltboyz for savage unleash hell potential and some good ranged MW projection round things out, with Soulsnare shackles proving an interesting tech pick to ensure the Waaghers get to charge on their terms – it’s cheap, so why not?
Overall, a great result for a struggling army – taking a W against super tanky armies like Bonereapers and Nurgle show the MW output in this formation can really shore up the weaknesses of a mono-Orruk list. Gratz to Ross!

Sons are in an interesting place in the new season. They’ve always played a very different game from the rest of AoS’s armies, and the lack of Galletian Champions can prove difficult given the new GHB’s battle tactics largely relying on their presence and function in your list.
And yet here is Tyler, bringing in a 4-0-1 and taking second place at DaBoyz. His list is a fairly standard Sons list, choosing to bring the generally more competitive 4 Mega-gargants and leaving Mancrushers at home. His choice to pile Eager for the Fight and the Amberstone totem on his Warstomper General means that he is one fast giant. Getting an average run distance of 13.5″ at top bracket, followed by an average 10.5″ run means that Tyler doesn’t have to worry too much about mobility. If all else fails, a poorly placed enemy hero could mean that Tyler’s gargant is in their backlines on turn one. The other Warstomper is equipped with the fan-favorite Arcane Tome and Flaming Weapon combo, allowing Tyler to ramp up the damage output of the gargant by setting his feet on fire prior to stomping on the puny enemies.
The other half of the list is a Gatebreaker with the Glowy shield, providing a bit more tankiness to a unit that wants to make sure the enemy’s terrain doesn’t last long. The long trek to the back corner of the board takes a while, but the look on your opponent’s face when their Herdstone gets destroyed is pretty great. King Brodd also makes an appearance, bringing out the biggest priest in town to pray over his giant friends and buff their movement, rend, or health to keep the gargants stomping and smashing as long as possible.
Congrats to Tyler on his win, and I hope there will be plenty of other Gargants players to prove the doubters wrong.

Behemoths Krondspine Incarnate of Ghur (480)* – Allies
This list isn’t hard to parse – it’s a pin-and-cushion Sylvaneth variant.
Warsong rev is the MW output, hanging back with Spellsinger allowing him to pop his MW bomb spell out of a forward tree – hence the Ancient, for throwing it out there with his once per battle ability pretty much anywhere on the board. Meanwhile, Spinedog pins you down while 6 Kurnoth rain arrows from 30″ into you, and Tree-revs teleport around scoring. That’s it. That’s the tweet list.

Army Faction: Ossiarch Bonereapers – Subfaction: Petrifex Elite – Grand Strategy: Take What’s Theirs – Triumph: Inspired

Everyone’s favourite animated crypt with more arthritis than a Ulysses convention in 8th we have OBR. One of the oldest books (yes, yes, FEC and Cities we know) with some completely out of place mechanics (Discipline points), they are still very durable and can hit hard. All three of the Mortisan, unusual, but giving heals, reroll 1s to hit and potentially mortal wounds. Other than the guard, everything is reinforced to maximise the impact of the buffs. And a token Immortis Guard for a cheeky bodyguard. The list is built to allow a risky play for an objective with Stubborn as a Rhinox on the General who has Stalkers in the Galletian Command battalion to open the possibility of fight twice (the Stalkers straight after the Soulmason). This is also 16 units on an objective, forcing you to commit something decent to remove them.
What’s interesting is that the list either got max points or lost. I suspect priority may have been partly to blame. With time to get their buffs up, this list would be very nasty. Consistently dropping important pieces becomes a lot more difficult. And the counter punch is terrible. Bone-tithe Shrieker is an excellent example. If they get it off, it’s preventing Rally/Inspiring presence, making any wounds problematic. And it grants +1 to hit, making losses more likely. That on the double reinforced Stalkers with Precision Aspect – 9 attacks on 3s & 3s with -3 Rend and 3 damage each, 30 attacks (Galletian Veterans for additional reach) 2s & 3s with -2 Rend and 2 damage. You really want to get into this unit first. Awesome effort with the army, his loses were to 1st and 4th, making this list very competitive in this field.

We’ve another commentator join us recently, who has slipped under the radar. Jon joined us at the backend of 2022. So much so that when I sent a message on our writers WhatsApp asking who wanted to comment on the Lumineth list, Jon had to remind us all it was his list.
So, in his own words, here’s how Jon played his list.
Jon Anderson: News from the Realms!
With LVO behind us and a new GHB season in full swing, I decided to venture out into the wilds. A barren place, a forgotten place, a place with no hope where even the whisper of superior college football conferences will send the locals into a fuss. That’s right, I went to Ohio.
I was in Columbus, to be exact, and participated in the second annual Brewhammer event. This year, I was not stymied by two 12″ charges in Round 5, though, and I was able to go 5-0 and win the event for the “good” guys.
Today, I want to go over a quick list analysis of my Lumineth Realm-Lords, which went undefeated at the GT. My path to victory took down Sylvaneth, Ironjawz, Nighthaunt, the Flesh-eater Courts, and finally more Sylvaneth.
Starting things off with the list was my decision to field the Great Nation of Helon which gave me bonus shots with the Sentinels. Very nasty. Many arrows.
Some deviance from the path has been detected! I went with the Grand Strategy “Take Their Toys”, which works out well when the plan was to table the opponent every round.
One drop. Uno. Ein. Ichi. The Sith Castle wants to determine who goes first and none of the bonuses from other battalions are worth taking. Why take a Warlord battalion when I’m going to forget I even have a relic to begin with? The Cathallar had the silver wand which enabled her to cast an additional spell. Guess what I didn’t do all weekend? You guessed it! Read my scrolls.
I put Teclis as the general because the tournament DID NOT allow book tactics and/or Grand Strategies. Because of this, I needed to have access to This One’s Mine in a pinch. I never needed it, but the option was there. Cool list, have you heard? Nothing crazy at battleline; one pack of Wardens and two reinforced squads of Sentinels meant I just wanted to use the Roos as board control and move blockers.
In regards to the Windchargers, I’m rapidly becoming a bigger fan of them. I don’t think you spam them, they’re not the rock you build your church on, but they’re a great support piece and at 130 points you unlock 3/3 battleline very quickly. I’d recommend naming the Roos: Jack, John, Luke, Jacob, and Steve.
Oh yeah, endless spells. Shards of Valagar giving half move but also removing the ability to teleport a unit was what won me the Sylvaneth game. Great endless spell, super cheap, buy high, sell low. Diamond hands.
Fun tournament, with fun people. I am looking forward to going back next year.
I’m happy to talk shop on Discord or Twitter. My Discord handle is Poro#4444 and my Twitter is @33r2d2
Best Overall: Jeff Campbell Crowley Best General: Jon Anderson Best Order: Austin Thimesch Best Destruction: “Megaboss” Mike Westendorf Best Death: Jake Myers Best Sport: Everyone, because you should all strive to be the best sports you can be.

Sylvaneth are settling into their gro(o)ve recently, and what’s great is that we’re starting to see a variety of builds do well.
Jeff here has gone against the grain and clinched a big 4-1 (losing only to the current…well, perennial boogeyelf) with an Oakenbrow treelord list! The sub-faction of choice for the big tree lover makes them battleline and helps them fight in top bracket – leaning into it therefore makes utter sense, hence the combo of Durthu, an Ancient, and 3 Treelords, backed up by the auto-take Spiteswarm hive for +3 to movement AND charges (not bad is it?).
We also see two Arch-revs here – most likely for scoring plays due to them being durable (when they select the 4+ ward option – and when wouldn’t they) and highly mobile GCs.
The increasingly popular mixed-phase output of Drycha rounds things out while fitting neatly into a battle reg – because the Treelords become troops in the sub-faction – making for a thematic and clearly powerful list. It’s great to see that Big Tree as an archetype is viable, and this is one of the first examples I’ve seen – so kudos to Jeff for staying true to his roots!

We’re back with Stormcast, who remain one of the most consistent factions throughout 3rd Edition so far. Dragons help. Lots of things we are used to, block of Storm Drakes in Scions of the Storm to get the drop on the opponent. No Lord Imperatant so no 7″ charges from off the board, but there is a clever use of the Vexillor. His banner gives a once a game teleport for a unit. Combine that with the Battlemage, and you could drop the Protectors somewhere with a 7″ charge (9″ with +2″ movement). A great way to move away from the almost autoinclude Relictor. Astral Templars ignore monstrous rampages, which are mostly for the drakes. They will be able to carry out a rampage and ignore the same from anything big. With both the Knight Draconis and Storm Drake, that’s potentially a big help.
This is a very mobile list with the Tree Revenants (Musician granting teleport), the Vexillor (Tunnel Master), and his Pendant. It might just be me but I like the idea of Galletian Command combined with the Vexillor’s Pendant, Wild form and Tunnel Master to throw the Protectors and Vexillor across the board to take advantage of Strike at the Opening.
This is a really bad idea, that’s a lot of rolls you need to go your way and you couldn’t rely on it. But. Anyway, the list did what it does, holding back lines with Liberators and giving freedom to the hammers (Protectors and Drakes). There is a nice balance of abilities to improve the Protectors’ mobility. And it worked, mostly anyway. Nicholas scored well in every round except against the Sylvaneth list with 6 Treelords (3 Lords and 3 Characters). Ents anyone? Ents are tough, and these fight and fade. It is very hard to counter with so few bodies.

A cool variation on the Bloodtoofs list with 15 pigs and a Mawcrusha but 10 Brutes and Rippa’s Snarlfangs. More of a harassing unit that are only a little faster than the pigs, though. Their most useful trait, though, is only costing 70pts and finishing that Warlord battalion. Still, getting somewhere fast can be useful, and something that is small and not that threaten might go under the radar. The Brutes are a seriously powerful unit. Now that Bounty Hunters has gone, their issue is speed. Double Ironjaw’s fist is an interesting concept. With Might Destroyers, you could give All Out Attack to all of the Pigs and the Brutes in the same turn. Twice. For 2 CP each time.
Interesting concept, it failed in the face of overwhelming shooting (Lumineth) and a lower score in the 5th round (more shooting) but performed well throughout. It says as much about the power of consistent shooting into melee armies as much as anything. Bouncing back from the 2nd round loss to take 6th with a very solid 4-1 is a great result.
This is the top three AoS lists for the March to War that took place in the UK on the 21st and 22nd of January. It involved 30 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

There once was a man from Wales, Who brought four cannons with tails, Some gnoblars as screens, Absolute scenes, He danced to his opponent’s wails.
This list was using old points – with updated points, it’ll run about 150 ish over. Wonder if three Ironblasters will get the job done instead of four!
All credit to Luke, however, who’s a great player from the illustrious Team LIT – Sylvaneth, Disciples, and LRL – would all have been tricky match ups too. Be curious to see what he can do with the big bois in the new season!

Mathmallow is back with the tree attack! His list is considerably different to the one he went 5-0 with recently – variety is the spice of life after all.
He’s dropped big momma and her chad-stag for the absolute bare minimum of an HQ – taking just a Warsong rev, tricked out with magic boosting enhancements to provide a MW cannon.
He invests the points savings into a mahoosive Revenant Seeker blob – reasoning (no doubt correctly) that this will just be an unkillable swarm of half anvil-half-hammer models.
The usual 2x tree revs for scoring. and his trademark 5 Gossamids make up most of the rest of the list, leaving just enough room for a little addition…Gotrek! He doesn’t show up much these days but having played against him in another Sylvaneth list, I can tell you that a psychotic, murderous and nigh on unkillable dwarf marching up the mid-board while stuff teleports and flies around you is rather a tricky proposition.
Losing only to Churchus’ cannonade, it’s a nasty, eggs-in-two-baskets Sylvaneth list that I can see being hugely oppressive to play against. Sylvaneth players would do well to take a leaf out of this book!

‘Ere we go, ‘ere we go, ‘ere we go again. All of the Dragon Ogres all of the time. Doubling down with our favourite Tzaangors on Discs (ToDs) to zoom about the place and lay some extra hurt down with the last flourish of Bounty Hunters. A couple of Ungor screens to hold off the eager. The list is built around the Dragon Ogre Shaggoths, moving up and buffing the Dragon Ogres while the ToDs and Cockatrice zip around scoring (or for the ToDs removing tasty snacks). Lots of threats, not a lot of fat. The list isn’t relying on summoning (no large units of sacrifices) but will still earn primordial points fast enough to summon a few times in an average match, particularly with the Cockatrices ability to pick up extra. Geminids backed by Master of Magic is a clever inclusion. It’s a great spell used for it’s ability to block areas as much as what it does.
A surprise 3rd round loss to the Beastclaw Raiders, surprise, mostly because you never see 5 of the big fellas together. With buffs, though, the Stonehorn are very tacky, have lots of wounds, and hit hard enough to remove most or all of Nick’s units in single turn. The screens are ripe to be torn apart before the charge as well, with the limited attack high damage range of the Beastclaws. Otherwise, he saw off most of the meta challenges (IJ ironsunz may not be meta… yet).

Allegiance: Kharadron Overlords – Sky Port: Barak Thryng – Grand Strategy: Masters of the High Airs – Triumphs: Inspired
Missing the Incarnate and Purple Sun of previous Kharadron lists, James has chosen to give his Dwarves fight on death (on a 4+). This Kharadron list wants to mix it up. And shoot. Doubling down on that approach is the Admiral with Flaming Weapon giving him a Rend -2, 4 damage weapon. With one company of Arkanauts in Eternal Conquerors to act as bodyguards for the Admiral and probably some bait. It gets around an issue for Kharadron in holding objectives, particularly early, when they want to be in the air if possible. Otherwise, the remainder of the list is around their considerable shooting, giving a superior “overwatch” for the ground units. Mostly, that seems to have worked especially into the slower armies, but fire and fade appears to have been an issue.
His last round was a real life shoot out at the ok coral, with the Underguts bringing only Leadbelchers and Ironblasters versus the gunships. Scoring was low across the board, and neither would have much left by the end.

Bests of Chaos (sic) run roughshod over another big tournament. And why shouldn’t they? Unthinking beasts – they’re just following their nature, going with the flow – what fault is it of theirs if no puny tree-man, hungry-man, rat-man, green-man or hungry-man-but-further-away can stand up to them?
Composition wise, we have the core HQ, the usual dragon ogors, but only to the tune of 6 to make space for twelve Enlightened on Discs and 2x 10 Tzaangors. Plus, of course, some of the annoyingly good little chaps who don’t cost enough.
Anyway, the previews have started for their new book, so speculation is rife as to whether they’ll receive the necessary re-writes to corral the herd. I hope they do, because there’s only so many times I can think of new ways to sneak my ‘NERF BoC FOR THE LOVE OF GORS’ agenda into these top 3s.
Nevertheless, taking down any tournament this big deserves praise so well done to Geordie. And to be fair, you don’t see Tzaangors that often, and they’re cool.
Leaders Slann Starmaster (285)**** – General – Command Trait: Arcane Might – Artefact: Fusil of Conflaguration – Spell: Stellar Tempest Engine of the Gods (285)*** – Artefact: Incandescent Rectrices – Mount Trait: Beastmaster – Universal Prayer Scripture: Curse Skink Starpriest (130)**** – Spell: Hand of Glory Skink Priest (120)**** – Universal Prayer Scripture: Curse Skink Priest (120)**** – Universal Prayer Scripture: Heal

So Seraphon just got a lot more expensive, and Corey’s list here will be one of the last to enjoy their old ‘bargain’ prices.
In the meantime, it works as we’ve come to expect. Slann as magic powerhouse, Engine of the Gods as a mixed phase utility, well, engine, and a mixture of skink support priests, one of the starry variety.
(Slightly) interestingly, Corey brings so many skinks you’d expect them to be in Fangs of Sotek – but no! We’re in Thunder Lizard still, so one of those two bastiladons can still double fire, stacked with Skink priest buffs. The big skink blob I imagine is meant to capitalise on the durable prayer platform that is the Engine, getting Curse off on a juicy target (on a 3+ while near terrain within their own territory due to their Primeval Domain rule) for the 60 skink shots to fish for some 6s.
We also have 2x 5 knights here, who made a surprise comeback this season as cost-efficient bounty hunters with weight of attacks – but obviously, that’s a tactic going more extinct than the dinosaurs dodo.
Big gratz on the 5-0 with a balanced Seraphon list – shame it’s now about 75 pts more expensive, lacking its most useful battalions, and doesn’t play nicely into the new realm rules. Seraphon could be about to experience a serious lull going into their new book – but that’s fine, they’re cold-blooded, they will have their time in the sun again.

I hope everyone enjoyed those Expert Conquerors while they lasted. While not as egregious as Bounty Hunters, I can’t say that I’m sad to see it go. Joel made use of them with a triple Rotmire in the same way that many Nurgle players do. It’s interesting to watch Nurgle over the course of this edition since they evolved from pure fly spam to bringing hero hammer + Rotmire creed.
And what a hero hammer this list is. 5 heroes are in play, with all of them being the classic nurgle combination of decent damage output and great resilience (you could even say they are disgustingly resilient). Joel has also brought along a couple of Slaves to Darkness allies to fill in the gaps that Nurgle armies tend to have. The Corvus Cabal brings some much-needed mobility to grab early objectives and the Chaos Chosen are an excellent vehicle for damage output.
Looking forward, I’m not sure that this list will need much adjustment for the new season. Joel already has a pair of solid Galletian Champions, some excellent potential Bodyguards, and the ability to reliably score three or four battle tactics without sweating too much. Overall, I’m excited to see what changes are made for the next GT.
Congratulations to Joel. He brought a well-crafted list, and played it effectively to achieve a 5-0.

Another 5-0 Seraphon list, this time with added Spinedog! Boy, am I glad that’s become a rare occurrence. Of course, it’s still a powerful piece, and on paper, it does make sense for Seraphon, given they lack an otherwise durable bully piece.
Henry has also brought some Salamanders in this particular iteration of the standard Fangs list (buff pieces, loads of skinks), which play really well into the Starborne teleport and provide an excellent dual-phase threat.
All in all it’s clear how this list hurts you – it’s a kind of techy twist on the ‘pin-cushion’ archetype, with excellent objective play in a handy one drop for, most likely, forcing opponents to move up into a much easier charge range of the Spinedog.
Gratz to Henry, and here’s hoping the new Seraphon book makes it less appealing than ever to take the ‘dog!

Drycha! You love to see it. The evil tree spirit in a mech suit is still a relatively rare sight given her competition in Durthu and Alarielle, but her ability to choose between 10 extra melee or shooting attacks makes her a fast, durable and flexible piece that I don’t think gets enough love.
Gary here has gone heavy with Kurnoh – a reinforced blob of both the shooty and scythy variety (both of which, as always, are backed up by the +1 to wound aura of the Arch-Revanant). Then, just the one unit of teleporty tree revs and a fantastic support unit of Seekers. It’s a nice balanced list with huge reach, two big blobs that will keep regrowing (via Seekers and Verduous Harmony) if you don’t have the ability to take them down fast enough, and the tactical Drycha option.
The fact it could handle such a diverse set of opponents – the magic dominance of Tzeentch, through the ranged punch of Underguts Ogors and even a semi-mirror – en route to the rare Sylvaneth 5-0 is testament to the general and how adaptable the list is. It’s really cool.

Allegiance: Stormcast Eternals – Stormhost: Hammers of Sigmar (Scions of the Storm) – Mortal Realm: Ghur – Grand Strategy: Take What’s Theirs – Triumphs: Bloodthirsty

If you follow Stormcast chat on Australian servers, this list might not be a surprise. Why such a skew list and why does it work – first credit to the General, but this is a durable shooting list which doubles down on Mortal Wounds. Each Vexillor can grant a re-roll charge to a unit within 12″. And each Vexillor can be deployed from Azyr (Scions of the Storm). So one play is to use the Vexillors to buff important charges after moving just outside 9″ (no redeploy). Or drop both just beyond 9″, allowing the Tempestors to shoot, then charge. Enormous flexibility and mobility. Backed by Judicators with a double shoot potential. The strength of this list is the extreme difficulty opponents have in stopping or limiting scorring. The Tempestor units with 12 wounds need serious attention to remove. They will tie up big threats turn after turn, unlike the larger units that some of the biggest hitters can remove in a turn.
Then there is the Mortal Wound output, another nice trick, Everblaze Comet to drop a bomb on any castles, with a CV of 6, Master of Magic makes it almost certain to go off when you want it. That with Thundershock to short those charges (leaving a CP for Unleash). And each of the Vexillors has a mini Everblaze. The list is a 2 drop (all of the best SCE lists try for minimum drops) for that small advantage. Scoring wise, this list wasn’t just good at scoring it’s own Battle Tactics but preventing some of the opponents (sometimes a lot of theirs). This list was rated as one of the strongest at Cancon and scored extremely well in the first 3 rounds before falling away in the last 2. Still major victories but not as many “other” points as some of the higher ranked lists. To be expected with the final pairings being into stronger opponents. It’s innovative and effective, and it is fantastic to see SCE from a different angle.
