TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

Celefaze: This is one of the most unique Slaanesh lists I’ve ever seen reach a podium placing, and makes expert use of our debuff capabilities and the offensive jank hidden in oft-forgotten Invaders subfaction. The party starts with two units of symbaresh twinsouls that apply -1 to melee attack characteristics to units within 3″, and 2 keepers of secrets with living whips that can each bring that down by a further -1 to a unit within 6″. To make sure all those newly upgraded 2″ reach hordes are kept humble the list then turns it up to 11 with the Lash of Slaanesh spell, capable of applying an uncapped melee attacks penalty (to a minimum of 1) to an unlucky unit within 12″. As if that weren’t excessive enough, the lord of hubris can step in to ensure a unit can only attack him in combat with however many attacks they happen to have left at that point. Offensively this force is deceptively deadly too, with a possible 2 instances of the Hurler of Obscenities command trait (applying +1 to hit and -1 to save for an enemy unit in 6″) thanks to the Escalating Havoc heroic action, and a turn of army-wide +1 to melee attacks from the Icon of Infinite Excess. Bolstered by the Slaaneshi power-couple of Syll’Esske’s conditional +1 to hit and wound, this can make for a brutal offensive push at a key moment. Some additional utility is found in allies and endless spells, with the unmade pinning enemies in place and furies for scoring shenanigans, while the Dreadful Visage provides a rare, almost nostalgic source of strike-last. Juancho deserves praise for not only brewing this strange beast of a list, but piloting it to an undefeated 3rd place.

Hanna Leppänen: This is a fun list! It’s a Hollowmourne list (+1 dmg for knights on charge), but the main attraction  here is the 6 Flayers and the Infernal Courtier.

The list plays rather standard 2 Archreagents and a Gravewarden as the Abhorrants, but does have a nice pick of Varghulf Courtier as the general, with Cruel Taskmaster for maximum muster potential for the killiest Courtier hero. Hoarfrost is the single best spell for FEC due to problems being often lack of rend and hit debuffs. Deranged transformation is of course the best spell in the FEC lore.

Otherwise the list plays around 40 Ghouls and Chalice for tarpitting, 2 x 3 Crypt Horrors for battleline and 2 x 3 Morbhegs for battle tactics and great mobility. Two units of MSU Morbhegs seem to be pretty stable part of FEC lists atm.

Crypt Flayers ww 9″ get +1 damage to their shooting attacks if a Crypt Infernal kills a model with a shooting attack. With a unit of 6 that’s 24 4+/3(2)+ rend 2 dmg 2 shots , which can also give you a battle tactic. They also get damage 2 when they charge due to Hollowmourne trait. Crypt Flayers are often overlooked due to pure stats comparison to horrors, but they are a good flex pick that can carry characters and have really good threat range.

Hollowmourne lists love to fight, and frankly, they need to for NDP generation. This list gives up a bit of the raw power of Horrors for more finesse of Flayers/Morbhegs and tarpitting of the Ghouls.

Roland Rivera: Hazel’s Ogors are back, and it’s like they never left. The name of the game is simple – play as many Stonehorns as you can afford to stuff into a list, and let their combination of durability, speed, damage, and capture power carry you to victory. The Tyrant is a fun complement to the big things, as it carries a source of AoE healing in the Splatter-Cleaver.

An interesting decision made by Hazel here is to not play any casters and instead opt for the Nullstone enhancement. I suspect this decision was spurred by the new Battle Tactic for the Nullstone enhancement bearer introduced in the latest Battlescroll. Otherwise, I think putting Arcane Tome on the Frostlord on Stonehorn would have been a very attractive option.

Hazel is perhaps one of the best Ogor players in the UK (if not the world), and she has showcased her skills once again with this list.

Roland Rivera: The Big Waaagh list that took 3rd at this tournament is an interesting one – while the likes of a Wurrgog Prophet, Warchanters, and a Weirdnob Shaman are pretty standard fare for this army, this list has a few interesting picks that merit further discussion.

The first is the Killaboss on Gnashtoof – the recipient of yet another price cut (this unit was 200 points when 3rd edition launched!), GW is practically begging Orruk players to field it; its stats are very efficient by virtue of how cheap it is. Part of his job in this army is to be a Kruleboyz General to open up the gimme Battle Tactic that is Take Dat, Ya Suckers!, and the other part is to babysit the unit of Gutrippaz that is screening for their heavier-hitting Ironjawz cousins. Next is the reinforced unit of Maw-Grunta Gougers – this is so rarely seen, I had forgotten the unit could be reinforced until I saw this list. Ardboys, fresh off a much-needed points cut, are beginning to see more consistent play. Last but not least, Big Waaagh players rarely play more than 6 Gore-Gruntas, but Sebastian decided that wasn’t enough Pig for him, so he packed 3 more.

While some of the choices made in listbuilding were definitely unorthodox, there’s no arguing with the results. This list did very well, demonstrating the depth of the Orruk Warclans unit lineup and the power of the Big Waaagh! allegiance abilities.

Beasts of Chaos – Battlescroll: Tactics of Andtor

Advertisements

All the data used in the charts on this article are drawn from events that have been hosted on Best Coast Pairings, Stats & Ladders and Ecksen using the points and FAQs from Battlescroll: Tactics of Andtor published in September 2023.

This chart shows the faction popularity, using the number of players using them at events.

The Combined win rate chart shows the overall win rate for these subfactions. This is the most comparable data to GW’s own metawatch articles. The figure in brackets shows the number of games featuring that subfaction the data is drawn from.

The above shows the win rates for each subfaction at GT events. These are events of single player tournaments of 2,000 points per player spread over a minimum of 5 rounds. This would be considered the most competitive view, with many of the players being experienced and looking to optimise their lists.

RTT/Casual shows the win rates for events that are not classified as a GT event. This could be doubles, teams, narrative, but mostly revolves around single day events known as RTTs.

The nitty gritty of a faction! This chart shows the win rate for lists where the specified warscroll has been included in the players list. The figure in brackets shows the number of games that featured the warscroll.

This shows the source of the Grand Strategy used in the players’ games, whether they are from the Battletome or the General’s Handbook.

Here you can see both the win rate of each Grand Strategy when it was used, as well as the popularity of the strategies.

Like our Grand Strategy source chart, this shows the same information but for Command Traits.

Once again, we can see the win rate of each Command Trait when used in players’ lists. The figure in brackets shows the number of games where that Command Trait was used.

Finally, we have the win rates for Endless Spells when included in lists.

Brett Martin: Tom played a fantastic series of games to take the overall win with Stormcast, the first win in a larger GT in quite a while. It’s a very technical army helped by the new tactics, which give Stormcast more of a fighting chance. Heavy ranged mortals that can’t be dispelled from the Knight-Vexillors aren’t a meme – they can weaken a key unit or remove an important buff piece easily.

Vanguard Hunters provide scoring and mobility and the army still have the typical Translocation (on a 3+ for an element of risk). The Knight Zephyros adds more mobility and all up there are 3 dispells and Adtorian Acloytes because it has the Arcane Tome. That’s good coverage into magic armies but the army still isn’t reliant of casting. There are still plenty of threat pieces, Fulminators dropping and charging, Tempestors are strong. Vanguard-Raptors dropping near the Knight Relictor. All staples of Stormcast and still good.

Eschewing the normal minimal drops for a Warlord is a solid move, having 2 Holy Command’s is a reflection of the Stormcast Artefacts and Spells. But in this case gaining double shoot on the Raptors and returning the Liberators adds a lot of flexibilty. That’s this lists stregth, it forces a heavy commitment to remove any one piece but losing one of the hammers won’t cripple the army.

Danny Wadeson: Sylvaneth have been struggling to podium in recent months, with most more recent results coming from pairing Belthanos and Alarielle. Here we have Alarielle on her own – still a capable multi-phase goddess with tonnes of utility. She’s supported by a much heavier shooting base of 6 and 3 bow-noth than usual, relying purely on 2×5 Tree revs for objective capping – and I’m guessing Alarielle was summoning in 3 Sword-noth for some extra melee bodyguards/objective bullies .

And it performed fantastically, losing only to the sheer ranged output of KO, which is hard for any army to deal with. Gratz to Chris for an unusual list that fills the sky with arrows while Queen big-bug runs rampant – sounds like fun.

CORE BATTALIONS:

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Roland Rivera: It’s no secret that Slaves to Darkness players rely heavily on Varanguard because of their package of speed, durability, power, and consistency, but this list goes a step further than most and runs 3(!) blobs of 6 VG, one of which contains the General because a 5+ Rally on that kind of beef is a valuable resource indeed.

As you would expect from an army that spends over 80% of its points on 3 potent hammers, the strategy here is highly straightforward; move fast, hit hard, don’t give your opponent much of an opportunity to hit you back. Untamed Beasts give you access to a screen/objective grabber, and the Sorcerer Lords keep you topped up with buffs.

While the strategy of the list is straightforward, and the gameplan can get a bit dicey if your forward rampage gets slowed down, doing so is easier said than done. You need only look to the list’s record for evidence of that.

Bean: When 12 Varanguard just isn’t enough (and frankly, I agree), one is left with a touch choice. Do you look through your tome, hoping to find a spark, something that ignites your list into something more? Maybe some screens, some deep strike, perhaps some utility? Nah, fuck that. Just slap 6 more Varanguard in there and offer your opponent a moment to pray before the game begins. An absolute baller list going 4-1 at the Blood Rite GT, it has everything you need to crush your opponent into truly fearing Archaons legions of scawy horsemen.

Starting off with a Nurgle marked unit of Varanguard as the General, they are -1 to wound in melee (Nurgle mark) and give the Varanguard a 5 up rally (when the command is issued by this unit). Coupled with Ensorcelled Weapons and most likely the hoarfrost from the Chaos Sorcerer Lord giving them 2-3 rend, that’s 30 attacks, 3/3’s, at potentially 3 rend. Absolutely horrific scenes.

Backing them up is 12 more Varanguard, Khorne marked for +1 attack on the charge, and armed with Fellspears for +1 to rend and +1 to wound on the charge. If in doubt, just remember your ABC’s with these guys (always be charging) and you’re golden. 2 Sorcerer lords for some utility, offering a cheeky 6 up ward (on top of the Varanguards already built in 4 up mortal ward) as well as a blizzard threat, some untamed beasts for a sneaky pregame move, dead on 2k points, what more could you want? A deadly list that I personally love, congrats on the 4-1!

Also, did I mention the Varanguard can run and charge? Yeah. Try and run. We dare you.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Brett Martin: A while between drinks for Stormcast, the new battle tactics are seeing them move closer to the top again. There is nothing fancy to this list, with the new Ionus Cryptborn leading a return to the dragon list.

Ionus is the centre of this list and as long as he is active this army is going to be punishing. With a constant stream of chip mortals, strong melee and solid anti horde abilitys (including preventing Rally and Inspired Presence) he is very strong in the recursion meta. Translocation is a Stormcast staple but not as straight forward here. The battleline doens’t need to teleport and you would normally want the ranged as far from melee as possible.

The play here is to use Ionus a bit like a screen and weaken when they approach using the Stormdrake to score and punish. Little wonder that the Sylvaneth proved too much with a better teleport meaning they could strike and fade. Otherwise the Vanguard Raptors snipe out heroes limiting buffs and exposing units to the Stormdrake. Combined with the mobility of the army this is a very strong scoring list. But it does live on the razor’s edge – the one loss was big preventing a podium in this case.
