Connor Irwin: Congratulations to Joe for an excellent 5-0 showing at Slambo. Watching Soulblight Gravelords go from struggling to meta top-tier in a matter of weeks after some unremarkable point tweaks has been absolutely wild. Let’s break down what Joe pulled out of the ground.
Joe brought the Deathmarch formation to give his deathrattle units extra rend on the charge. This puts both grave guard and black knights at rend -2, which is never bad. He took the aetherwrough machineries manifestation lore, a popular pick for soulblight players due to how often mortarchs and wizards show up on lists and how good giving -1 to hit those big wizards or charge rerolls for black knights with cogs can be.
Starting with his general’s regiment, Neferata leads the army as warmaster, she has a host of abilities that improve the durability and mobility of the army. A pre game move for grave guard is useful for jumping onto objectives or sliding into cover. The -1 to hit in combat aura, especially when stacked with the cogs effect, makes her and any nearby units especially hard to shift. She has an excellent spell granting mon monster units ethereal saves, which looks great on black knights and grave guard with their 4+ saves. Finally, her akmet-har rampage gives big killy heroes something to think about. It kills a hero damaged by that weapon outright on a 5+! The rest of the regiment contains grave guard and a wight king on foot to unlock their 5+ ward and add +1 to hit on a chain activation (changing to crit hits shortly).
The second regiment is led by a necromancer, which still enjoys the ability to give a nearby unit fight twice on a 3+, likely going to a nearby unit of grave guard. This is getting a 1 CP tax soon, unfortunately. The regiment also contains the wheels in the army, a reinforced unit of Black knights and two units of dire wolves. The Black Knights got a major glow-up of this edition with 3 health, crit mortals on charges, charge damage on their lances, and a decent 4+ save. 30 health on an ethereal 4+ with a 6+ ward is going to take effort to lift and can come right back at 50% thanks to the battle trait unit recursion soulblight enjoys. In the new battletome on the horizon, these knights get even better, so expect to see them on a lot of lists. The dire wolves are excellent tarpits and are great for tying up enemy units in combat with run and charge, while the Soulblight hammers chew their way through preferred targets.
It’s worth noting that Joe squared off with a number of high performing shooting armies and came out on top, which is no easy feat! Soulblight excels at tying up enemies with prolonged combat while keeping opponents off objectives. Their heroes allow cunning generals to lean into those strengths with their own style of play. Congrats again Joe!

Roland Rivera: While Be’lakor is a common sight at top tables, Legion of the First Prince is not. Generally overshadowed by standard Slaves to Darkness, this Army of Renown nonetheless offers an interesting control-based playstyle to contrast with the brute force typically associated with the main army. Be’lakor’s potent mix of debuff spells, Dark Master, and defensive Rampage require no introduction, so let’s take a look at the other pieces and see how they further the gameplan.
Legion of the First Prince forsakes most of the standard Slaves to Darkness roster in order to open up access to some of the Daemons in the Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch armies, and the troop choice that Christopher’s army is built around is Bloodletters. These are your main combat blocks as they have lots of health, some decent damage with crit (mortal), and are great targets for all of Legion’s Battle Traits, including Bestow Favour (+1 save), Daemonic Reinforcements (brings back half the unit), and Storm of Blackened Blades (+1 Attacks on up to 2 units near Eternus once per game). The Centaurion Marshal is also a good complement to Bloodletters and Be’lakor, as it can tag in a block of Bloodletters into combat (which makes Spring the Trap more potent, as you effectively get 2 chances at giving the Bloodletters strike-first in most scenarios) and also give them +1 to hit.
These Bloodletter combat blobs are complemented with a bit of shooting and mobility, as Flamers offer some decent shooting to pick off vulnerable targets and Furies flap around the battlefield securing objectives and Battle Tactics. While this army is much more methodical in its approach than standard Slaves to Darkness, this strong result shows that you should not underestimate it. After all, it still has Be’lakor backed up by big blobs of fighting troops, and in a lot of games, that’s all you need.
