Roland Rivera: While Slaves to Darkness lists in 4th edition have by and large leaned heavily on their elite units, the army has more build options than that. The roster has many inexpensive units that can be used to complement the big hitters, as well as some more points-conscious options in case you were balking at spending 680 (!) points on a unit of reinforced Varanguard.
This list has taken that approach, with a solid infantry power-pair core of Chosen with a Chaos Lord on foot and Ogroid Theridons with an Ogroid Myrmidon complemented by the seemingly omnipresent Be’lakor and a variety of cheap chaff. The Ogroids in particular benefit from the presence of their designated foot Hero, as he offers extra speed via Field Sergeant and papers over their main offensive weakness by providing +1 to hit. Chariots and Raptoryx offer speed on the flanks for a minimal price, and a unit of Chaos Warriors provides stiffer resistance that will likely require an enemy hammer to clear.
While this list style does not offer the sheer ability to offensively overwhelm its opponents that other variants of Slaves to Darkness do, it is likely more well-rounded, which can serve it well in certain battleplans or against certain matchups. One example of this is in Oliver’s path to his 4-1 result. He defeated Beasts of Chaos, which is typically a very challenging matchup for Slaves to Darkness, but the extra units this list can put on the table likely gave him more play against his opponent. As such, being able to field lists in this style should be a legitimate consideration for most pilots.
