Roland Rivera: New season, and new-look lists for Slaves to Darkness! While the likes of Chaos Chosen, Chaos Knights, and Chaos Warriors are still undeniably potent, this season and its intense focus on having units to cover the board have provided opportunities for less-heralded parts of the roster to shine, with this list being a prime example. While Be’lakor and his impressive suite of defensive abilities need no introduction, his supporting cast in this list is quite different from what you’d see in the last General’s Handbook.

We’ll start with his bodyguards in this list, which are the Ogroid Theridons and their captain, the Ogroid Myrmidon. The Myrmidon works well with the Theridons in patching their main offensive weakness in their middling to-hit value, while being a pretty efficient fighter himself. They also give Be’lakor’s Deadly Trap ability some potent targets when enemies charge into you.

The rest of the list is populated by Darkoath, which give the list access to cheap bodies, lots of units, and some nice utility. Darkoath Marauders occupy space and absorb buffs well, and their death deals mortal damage when a Darkoath Hero is nearby, and fuels the Wilderfiends, which can generate even more mortal damage. Speaking of Darkoath Heroes, the Chieftains get into the fray with Marauders and make them more of a threat in combat, whereas the Warqueen offers the potential for offensive and defensive buff auras. The roster is rounded out by Gunnar Brand, who isn’t a powerhouse on his own, but brings 2 other units wiht him, including a Wizard with a decent spell.

It is worth noting that this list is trying to employ some cheeky tech enabled by the new Scourge of Ghyran content – the Favored of the Pantheon Heroic Trait gives a Hero Dark Apotheosis points if he is picked to be the target of the Dark Apotheosis Battle Trait, which in turn means that if that Hero dies, the Darkoath Warqueen can use the new Head of the Unworthy artefact to ascend into a Daemon Prince. However, this list has picked the Ogroid Myrmidon, who is not a legal target for Dark Apotheosis (has to be a Darkoath or Warriors of Chaos Hero). Spicy tech if implemented properly, but this list in particular has not done so.

As the list has lots of regiments, it often won’t have choice of first turn at the start of the game, so the Wrathful Cycles Battle Tactic card is useful insurance against a double turn by letting you benefit from becoming the underdog. Intercept and Recover also figures to be a common Battle Tactic card for aggressive armies, as your opponent picking 3 units for you to take out is just encouraging you to do what your primary gameplan is anyway. All in all, it’s interesting to see a very different Slaves to Darkness list from what did well last season run the gauntlet and go 5-0, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the different army styles this army is capable of fielding stack up against each other as the season progresses.

4x Morghast Archai (520)

Walter Brock: The new GHB brings some interesting lists. Mortisan council provides a solid bonus to casting.  The OBR manifestation lore remains a solid choice, especially with the -1 to wards on the shrieker

Vok and the Soulmason provide solid casting support and control with the fight first from the Soulmason and the CP drain from Vokmortian.

Katakros, as we all know, is what makes most OBR armies tick.  From +1 to save on three units.  To give 3 extra control score or even just stop enemy commands.  Katakros is a beast that will almost never disappoint.

The units that make up the list starting with 4 archai.  Fast, hit hard,  protection against spells.  Archai has been a staple of OBR lists for a while.

Immortis guard are durable and provide Heros with a better ward save.  Making it harder to take down Katakros and letting Katakros tank much more damage.

Stalkers are a solid utility tool.  Lots of situational abilities. from reducing control by 3 to turning off wards. It turns Stalkers into a swiss army knife of units.

All of this fits in three drops. So sometimes they will get the free reroll.
