Roland Rivera: It’s not every day you see Be’lakor and Abraxia in the same army list, but this list made it work by pairing each Unique Hero with the troops they most want to be with. Be’lakor loves hiding behind big blocks of combat infantry and both providing them with strikes-first in combat and spreading debuff spells such as his -1 to hit and no critical hits spell. This list pairs him with Scourge of Aqshy Chaos Warriors, which are the toughest troops Slaves to Darkness has access to thanks to their high health count and inbuilt Ward (which is saying something).

Conversely, Abraxia likes to be near Varanguard to make their once per game double fight even more formidable. Fred has chosen to make the most of this synergy by pairing her with a reinforced block of Varanguard.

These units consume the vast majority of the list’s points, but it has also used the remained wisely on 2 mobile Heroes in Eternus and a Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount. Eternus is a great unit to run up the board to complete tactics and disrupt enemy units, as he can be revived if he happens to die. A Lord on Daemonic Mount with the Darkflame Pendant is also good at that job, because the Pendant forcing all damage to 1 make it a tough unit to bring down to begin with. Last but not least, Primal Energy helps keep your big Heroes upright.

Overall, this list is simple to build, but a bit tricky to play, as the unit count is low, Be’lakor isn’t exactly durable for his points, and you have to be willing to put Eternus and the Lord on Daemonic Mount in harm’s way to score your tactics. However, the sheer power of the units involved means that you will be handsomely rewarded for skillful play, and that’s a good place to be.

Erich: Audrey elected to buck the trend by remaining loyal to Morathi and the Shadow Queen, and was rewarded for the effort. The list Audrey brought follows the familiar Daughters of Khaine pattern, but with notably fewer pieces than it had at launch. Keeping with the current trend, two full units of snakes form the core of the army, while the lethal Shadow Queen enjoys three layers of protection.

First, the Shadow Queen benefits from shooting protection through the Fervent Ritualists faction, keeping her clear of enemy fire. Then she has a loyal servant ready to throw themselves in front of that final wound with Loyal Unto Death. A neat trick here is that if the Slaughter Queen is Anointed, her death can also trigger a Blood Rite-fueled heal immediately after emptying the wound pool. Finally, she has her natural return through Morathi, which is reasonably easy to achieve when an Anointed is throwing itself away to trigger a Blood Rite into Blessing.

The final notable choice in this list is Burning for Vengeance. Siege of Ashes is a mainstay for DoK, but Burning can be a challenge to achieve on some deployments. This list addresses that with two units of Khinerai that can run up the flanks to grab early table quarters and then hopefully die on an objective or Place of Power.

Roland Rivera: One of the major signs that Blades of Khorne are in great shape metagame wise is that the base army and two of their Armies of Renown are currently tournament-worthy. While Gorechosen Champions isn’t quite the menace that required an emergency adjustment from Games Workshop, it’s still a very potent and very fun way to play the army.

As is quickly apparent from glancing at this army list, this Army of Renown’s roster is entirely composed of Khorne Mortal Heroes. Within this hierarchy, each Hero has their role. The Deathbringers are your bread-and-butter combat Heroes, with a 3+ save, 3 damage attacks, and the ability to potentially negate commands. These are supported by the Bloodsecrator’s abilities to grant bonus attacks (which have unlimited range and no visibility requirement), Mighty Lord of Khorne and the Realmgore Ritualist’s aura bubbles of +1 to wound, the prayers and manifestations that the Ritualist and the Slaughterpriest can summon, and the pregame Rend buffs that the Skullgrinders can provide. The Mighty Lord of Khorne is also an incredible objective stealer thanks to Crowned in Butchery, which provides +20(!) to his control score if he is in combat.

These Heroes are supplemented by the potent Battle Traits of Gorechosen Champions, which provide blanket access to crit (mortal), a 6+ Ward, and the ability to stand back up after lethal damage on a 5+. Having to play whack-a-mole against a bunch of individual models (which have to be targeted individually) that are tough, hit hard, and can stand back up if slain is a difficult task for many armies, and Alexander’s run (his only loss was to the winner of the tournament in Round 5) exemplifies that.
