Fittsy: Yes! We’ve finally got another KO list on the podium and I get to comment it. This is a mixed arms KO list which we’re seeing a bit of play at the moment where there are little interesting choices in terms of the final composition. This is pre September Battlescroll so it would even go down another 40 points perhaps opening up some choices around the melee units / screens. I like this style of list a lot personally as it’s giving you choices and isn’t going to be hard countered dependent on map or matchup. This is KO though so a little mis-positioning and it can crumble like a house of aethercards.
We’ve got Regiment 1 bundling our melee package together. Brokk to hand out extra attacks and give our boats a run and shoot/charge OPB. Frigate to hand out the strikes first to one of the two units. Skywardens with the combat buff unit artefact thingy and Salvagers who punch way above their weight and really help buff other units to fight onto objectives which is really important to try and score on the Primary in this season.
Regiment 2 we’ve got the Ironclad and friends. Admiral is there to buff our shooting and carry artefact 1 of 2 the trusty remove your ward for a turn OPB. We’ve also got Shrewd Opportunist here which lets us move the admiral and two other Skyfarer (anything but a ship) units in the deployment phase. With the 12″ moves on Skywardens and Salvagers this is both an offensive threat and an objective stealing opportunity which the opponent should react to in their deployment phase. The Arks are a fantastic screen at their points and if not dealt with will help chip away at enemy units and are a nice charge deterrent shooting at the enemy on a 3+ if they tag them in combat. Ironclad flies, transports, and shoots the shit out of stuff if you’re dice are good. The Endrinmaster lets it retreat and shoot to keep getting value out of it.
This combination of regiments is asking your opponent what they want to do about your army. Yes, the Ironclad is a major threat alone at 18″ range but when you also add Brokk and the Frigate into the equations, this list can hang back a bit and soften the enemy up or take away key pieces. At a two drop, it’s also well positioned to play for a double with the movement and range allowing the KO player to take advantage of it and to try and strike the crippling blow. If the opponent heads in for the charge, they’ll definitely take some hits on the way in and you’re given choices around staying there to mop up with your melee punch or moving on to attack other pieces of their army. This makes it sound easy… there’s still a lot of hard choices to be made every game for the KO player and if they’re not careful end up losing in a war of attrition.
On the battle tactics, we very often see Blazing for KO, with the mortals in the move phase from both ships and end phase from Brokk and the wardens, there are good chances to score the affray pretty early. Burning is more controversial… even with a list like this, you’re often not wanting to split your forces turn 1 or 2 and maybe even later making it hard to score the quadrants. On the other hand, I think it should be considered as a serious option over Siege as the Strike and Domination are easier to get than Siege’s sometimes tricky Strike tactic needing the charge / no move unit.
Honestly, good work piloting this one to a podium position! This is a list that take a fair bit of brain work to get through all 5 games with a result like this. I hope the extra points from the battlescroll help out a teeny bit and we start to see more KO get to the top.
