Roland Rivera: You don’t often see a Slaves to Darkness list roll out without one of Abraxia, Archaon, or Be’lakor, but those lists do exist, and can do well. The Champions of Chaos Battle Formation enables infantry and cavalry Heroes to punch above their weight class, and this list is taking advantage of this in key ways. The star of this show is the Chaos Lord on Karkadrak, which takes the Deathmonger trait to become a legitimate combat threat and (hopefully) crack enough heads to become a Daemon Prince. He is joined by a Chaos Lord on foot to help out your infantry blobs, which also serves as your Eye of the Gods backup plan, thanks to Head of the Unworthy. Lastly, Gunnar Brand benefits from the Champions of Chaos ability despite being a Unique Hero, though he’s mostly here to be a cheap roadblock that brings a fast chaff unit in Singri Brand and a good Wizard in Broken Nadja.
On the troops front, this list has 2 large infantry blocks in Warriors and Chosen, which are expected to win in combat. These are joined by Knights and Furies, which lend the list an element of speed and versatility. While this is a setup that is lighter on damage than what you’d normally expect out of Slaves to Darkness, the extra output that you are getting out of your Heroes enables you to do this.
While this list doesn’t boast the most impressive record and could do with a bit of refinement (some questionable elements being 3 drops, the chosen Battle Tactics, and the manifestation lore), I do think it features some interesting concepts that could influence listbuilding for this army going forward.
