Carson Whitlock: Impressive way to break the mould! While most well-performing lists are focused on Gluttons/Ironguts in vanilla Ogors, we see Ian has shown us success with the previously terrible (in 3rd edition) Army of Renown: The Roving Maw.

There are a few key things that distinguish The Roving Maw from regular index Ogors. While Trampling Charge is the same, Roving Maw Ogors do not get +2 to run rolls, making them slightly slower. Gorgers, however, get run and charge on their own which makes them excellent free agents to run around and bully the board edges, then collapse in when it’s time to end the game. Them being able to deepstrike within 9″ of a board edge is just icing on the meaty cake.

The Roving Maw also has one more trick up its sleeve! At the start of each battle round, you roll 2D6 and apply an effect to all enemy units that are vulnerable to mawpits (i.e not hiding wholly inside terrain, and not flying). These effects vary from doing nothing or subtracting control score to effectively board-wide mortal wound splashes, or if you get lucky, shutting off commands entirely. Killing models with the mawpit adds to this roll, making it much more reliable to get the good effects.

While Ian has brought over a mainstay for regular Ogors (2×12 Gluttons), he’s also got 3 Gorger Mawpacks to harrass the outer edges and take the flanks. As my friend Matthias would say, the techy deep striking and fast movement of this list introduces a delectable element of zhuzh (look it up) that an otherwise simple Ogor list misses out on. For those keeping track at home, this list is 186 wounds of Pure Grade-A Beef, which will be hard for most armies to deal with. Lastly, we see the obligatory Morbid Conjurations inclusion which does especially well in this list, as there are only 2 spells in the Roving Maw lore. One is just bad (+2 rend for the caster), and one is situational (make a terrain piece apply “vulnerable to mawpits” to nearby units), so conjure up those morbids to your heart’s content!

Great work Ian, I commend you for thinking outside the box and succeeding while doing so!

Kevin Lathers: Maldad Puto manages to find himself with a 2nd place finish and a solid 4-1 performance with this list.

Most people are trying to find their footing with the new Fyreslayer index, but it seems he has found something to cook with.

At first glance it appears similar to many other Fyreslayer’s list iterations but contains a notable exception: the Flamekeeper! He is potentially potent in the mid- to late-game after the Fyreslayers have lots a few units. Flamekeepers can buff the damage of infantry, hand out a ward, or hand out a charge buff (+2). That damage buff can turn any other infantry unit into a hammer.

Which leads to the rest of the list which is high in unit/drop count and all MSU except a unit of Broadaxes — this can feed the Flamekeeper as things die which in turn feeds the infantry, particularly the reinforced broadaxes, buffs.

The list sees a mix of Vulkites, Hearthguard, and Flameseekers as the fuel here. Flameseekers are, essentially, point for point just better Vulkites — with some anti-monster bonuses, too — so it makes sense to include them if you have the points, otherwise you might as well opt for the cheapest options: Vulkite Axes and Broadaxe Berserkers, which fill out the rest of the list.

Vulkites are just bog-standard damage boys that have 20 wounds. The broadaxes are cheap, can have a 5+ ward (if near a foot hero), and also have the benefit of getting boosted attacks if they are near a damaged hero, such as the Grimwrath or even the Magmadroth.

Speaking of ‘droths: they aren’t seeing much love this edition thus far and this list sees only one: the Runefather on Magmadroth. The father can buff the infantry’s attacks and also debuff the enemy’s saves, seeing him as a solid support for the rest of the list.

When put together we see a list that wins through high wound count, high damage, and attrition. Opponents have to burn through the units, but as they do so the flamekeeper could potentially make the remaining units significantly stronger. In fact, if all the cards lineup you could see the reinforced broadaxes swinging with 41 attacks, 3 damage each, and -2 rend with Crit(Mortals), spooky.

This damage and wound engine clearly works well nabbing the 4-1. Gargants and FEC particularly do not want to run into high weight of attacks all swinging for the rafters against them, while Sylvaneth and StD often struggle to get through the wound count. Sadly he finds his match in Ogors, who continue to be many a Fyreslayer’s bane.

Amazing work with a great list.

Hexwraiths (160 Points)

Fittsy: So we’ve got another Nighthaunt placing well, taking 3rd at Salt Lake Open. Along with some pretty standard choices, we see a few differences here in Zac’s list.
Death Stalkers for run/retreat and charge is a default for NH now, but after this, we see Zac taking some real interesting choices. Instead of Morbid, we see the Aetherwrought Manifestations. The Cogs is a nice flexible buff allowing reroll charges or -1 to hit Wizards wholly within 12” plus the Quiksilver Swords for throwing it down the throat of anyone rocking a good ward save. We do see the classic Ruler and Lightshard for +1 attacks OPB and returning half a unit.

On the units side, we’ve got the 2 x reinforced Bladegheists as a serious threat who Awlrach can teleport over to outside 7” to threaten the whole board. We’ve just got a single nonreinforced unit of Hexwraiths in this one and a smattering of other common picks such as Dreadblades and Harridans. We do have the reinforced Craventhrone here, which we see popping up from time to time, really forcing the opponent to rethink they’re army positioning if they want to protect their squishy heroes.

We’ve also got a single unit of Chainrasps who I just call out since we’re not seeing them much but it slots nicely into this list and although they’re not as strong as many of the other units for Nighthaunt at the moment… having 10 bodies with a 5+ unrendable is still good at 100 pts.

Zac took a loss in the 2nd round against Ogors, who can be a tough match-up. Then, going into KO… who aren’t winning many matches at the moment and certainly not against NH. Then they’ve knocked off two StD lists in game 4 and 5 to land 3rd place. Nice work, Zac!
