Most of us know Warhammer: The Old World as a strictly one-on-one affair. You build your army, head down to the local club or a weekend tournament, and face off against a single opponent across the table. It is a brilliant experience, but it is only one way to enjoy the game.
If you have never experienced the thrill of Team Warhammer, you are missing out on one of the most tactical, rewarding, and downright exciting ways to play the game.
This September, the global community is heading to Talavera, Spain, for the World Team Championship: Clash of Nations 2026 (WTC CoN). It is a completely independent, community-driven event run strictly on a non-profit basis for the benefit of players worldwide.
If you have no idea what a team tournament is, or if you are wondering how you can get your home country involved, find out more below…
Before I jump into the details, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

What Exactly is the World Team Championship?
In a standard singles tournament, you are on your own. At the WTC: Clash of Nations, you are part of a national squad consisting of eight players and up to two coaches.
The event is built on three core principles: fair play, inclusivity, and respect. It is the premier annual event exclusively featuring Warhammer: The Old World, bringing together distinct gaming cultures and an incredible atmosphere of international friendship.
Instead of randomly playing against someone, your team captain engages in a highly strategic “Drafting” before the dice even roll. Captains put forward armies, counter-pick opponents, and actively try to create the best possible matchups across all eight tables.
Suddenly, your army list does not need to be able to beat everything. You might build a highly defensive list designed to survive the enemy’s most terrifying damage-dealers, sacrificing your own glory to secure a draw so your teammates can score massive wins elsewhere. Every single victory point matters for the aggregate team score.
How to Join: Your Country Needs You
Last year in Germany, we saw 18 different nations field full teams. This year in Spain, it’ll be even bigger. We already have several established national teams locked in, but our main goal right now is to find the nations that are missing.
You might be wondering if you are eligible to play. The WTC recognises countries based on territories with a FIFA-recognised confederation. To represent a country, you must meet just one of the following criteria:
- You were born in that country.
- You have a natural or adoptive parent or grandparent born in that country.
- You hold a valid passport issued by that country.
- You have resided in that country for the three calendar years immediately preceding the event.
Do not worry if you cannot find eight perfect candidates locally. A team only needs five eligible players, and you are allowed to bring up to three “mercenaries” (players from other nations) to fill out your ranks! If your community truly cannot form a full national team, there is even a “United Nations” team option, allowing players without a specific country affiliation to still compete on the world stage.
Step Up as a Captain
Often, a country misses out simply because a previous organiser stepped back, and the rest of the players assume the door is closed.
Let us be completely clear: the door is wide open. We need Captains. A Captain leads the team, selects the players, and votes in the WTC Council to shape the future of the event. You do not need to be the absolute best player in the world to be a Captain; you just need the enthusiasm to pull a squad together and wave your flag in Spain.
How to Find Out More
If this sounds like the kind of challenge you and your mates would love, the very first step is to come and say hello!
We have a dedicated hub for all things World Team Championship. The global chairpersons who facilitate the event are actively answering questions, helping lone players find their national communities, and guiding new captains.

Once your team is ready, registration is managed via the NewRecruit platform. There is also an optional World Singles Championship (WSC) running just before the main team event, meaning individuals can also come and fight for a world title without needing a full squad.
Do not let your nation go unrepresented. Join the Discord, rally your local players, and let’s make the WTC Clash of Nations 2026 the greatest Old World event in history!

Fancy trying out some Warhammer: The Old World teams events before then? The UKTC are hosting a 4-man teams tournament in Leeds, UK in June. Or search for events in your region: the USA, Poland, Italy and other countries have active teams scenes.
