How to Paint – Zone Mortalis Tiles

Zone Mortalis Tiles for Necromunda and Warhammer 40k

It’s a change of approach… or a new year or something! Those who will notice these things, will immediately identify my blue banners as being Hobby Updates – well this is a change! As most of my Hobby Updates over the last few years have included a paint scheme, I have decided to lean into it and rename the articles.

I’ve mainly done this to make it easier for people to immediately identify what the article is about, and slightly done to help the Google Search with ‘How to Paint…’ queries. I won’t pretend to paint like Louise, Duncan or Peachy, but I am an army painter and can get terrain / scenery and armies on the table in good time to ‘army ready’ level – and sometimes a little beyond.

So these won’t be stage by stage and will keep a similar format to the Hobby Updates or yester-year, but they will continue to have the list of paints available.

Necromunda

Is this the best game GW have ever released… well it’s on a par to Warmaster at least and is a great campaign game and fun skirmish adventure. Is it ‘fair’ in any meaningful way?… well no! But who cares it’s more a GM led campaign than anything else. I love it..

Zone Mortalis Tiles

Games Workshop have had 12″ x 12″ squares of plastic for Zone Mortalis for some years and they are lovely pieces to buy… but expensive! Very expensive at over £10 per tile… still that’s Warhammer for you – there’s a reason for the share price insanity over the last 6 years.

How do they play?

The tiles are either essential, or not required at all… if you have one you really need to make the whole board out of them… but they are far from compulsory. I love them, but they do also have an impact on a game where there is no pre-measuring… they are 2″ squares – I can do the maths!!

Paints Used

There are simpler ways of painting the tiles, but I wanted mine to be interesting whilst fading in to the background – these don’t tell the story after all.

Starting with a Black Undercoat, I drybrushed everything in Leadbelcher and then randomly picked out the squares with: Mephiston Red, Averland Sunset, Mechanicus Standard Grey, & Rakarth Flesh… then drenched everything with Nuln Oil.

This last step is essential in my mind, but this is expensive so I should probably suggest a cheaper black shade / ink instead. Just pretend I did that and use your favourite version – but don’t waste the good ‘old’ Nuln Oil — that would be criminal!

Buying a Box

These are available everywhere, so try your local FLGS first – or ask them to order in for you. If you don’t have a local FLGS then Woehammer has an affiliate link with Element Games which gives us a small kickback to buy more toys. But be wary, they are not cheap with RRP of £50 for 4 tiles. Maybe using a table or neoprene mat is a better alternative!
