2026 Woehammer Slow-Grow Series

Welcome to the 2026 Woehammer Slow-Grow Series

Each year I try to make sure at least one hobby project actually gets finished. For 2026, I thought we’d turn that into something the wider Woehammer community could take part in as well.

The goal is simple: Paint one unit per month for an army that you haven’t finished yet. That unit can be anything that would be used in the army, a HQ or character, a vehicle or some basic foot troops. There’s no restriction on the system or setting. Age of Sigmar, Old World, 40k, or something entirely different.

Each month participants share their progress in the Woehammer Discord and finished units will be shown off on Woehammer.

Personally I’ll be doing my Grudgebringer Army which I’ll be using at the Narrative Old World event we’ll be running at Battlefield Hobbies in March. I’ll then keep building this up further ahead of a planned 10,000 points a side Old World battle later this year.

If you’ve got a grey army that’s been staring at you from the shelf, this is your chance.

Here’s some of my Grudgebringers that I’ve painted up so far…

Hobby Golf: WoePoints 2026

For the last few years we’ve been playing Hobby Golf on the Woehammer Discord.

The rules are simple, the aim is to finish with a negative score at the end of the year.

You get negative points by painting and selling models and you increase your score by buying new ones.

The lowest score at the end of the year wins eternal glory and smugness.

The full points lists are below, but please come and join us on Discord (link above) and fight that pile of shame!

Small Minded General: My 10mm Fantasy Project

Some of you may be aware that I’ve recently written my own fantasy ruleset for smaller scale games.

It’s aim is to put you in the shoes of what a General experiences, being unable to move all their troops with clockwork precision and not always knowing the full picture.

Part of this has meant taking some glamour shots for the Rulebook. Painting the models and making the scenery has possibly been the most fun I’ve had with wargaming for a long time. For those put off painting a smaller scale, thinking its too small or hard I would urge you to have a go.

There’s no shading, highlighting or detailing, mostly its just patches of colour which come together once you take the 3 foot rule in.

Dwarfs march out to meet the Human threat

This is one of the shots I did for the rulebook. Aimed at recreating the GW battle scenes you sometimes get in their books. Here we’ve got some Human Halberdiers facing off against some Dwarf Warriors. Both sets of miniatures are sculpted by Forest Dragon Minatures. I bought these prints from Excellent Minitures.

Humans stand ready to receive an Orc charge

Here I painted up a load of Orcs from Wargames Atlantic (Also, a box of their 10mm minis at £35 basically gives you enough for a small army in the Fantasy ruleset I’ve written).

Orc and Dwarf lines crash together

In this one we’ve my Forest Dragon miniature Dwarfs on the right facing off against the Wargames Atlantic Orcs on the left.

All of these photos have been edited slightly in Canva, with the last one having a rain effect added over the top and the first two having scenic backgrounds inserted behind.

I’ll post some further updates soon, with perhaps some painting guides for the miniatures and instructions on how to make the smaller scale woods.

A Tale of Many Painters: 2025 Woehammer Slow Grow Challenge

In 2024 we did our first community slow grow challenge. It lasted six months with participants asked to paint a specific type of unit each month and also to give that unit a little character by giving it some background.

We want to do it again!

We’re not forcing you into one specific game system either. This could be whatever game system you like, even non-Games Workshop ones. All we ask is that you paint one unit a month and provide a little background for it.

Perhaps there’s an Age of Sigmar Spearhead box you want to paint, or a 40k Combat Patrol box. Perhaps you’ve got a starter box for Warlord Games’ Epic Hail Ceasar you want to make a start on. The choice is yours!

We’ll set some challenges along the way, but these are optional for you to follow along, and as long as you paint something, then all is good in the world.

Challenges

January: Build and paint a heroic (or dastardly) leader for your rag tag army. Yeah, they don’t have any troops yet, but they have ideas! Soon, the masses will know and love them!
January Additional: Why not try and come up with some fluff surrounding their background? Where are they from? What do they want to achieve?

February: With your leader done, they need some troops to…. well… lead! Build and paint at least 10 models from your Core (Old World), Infantry (Age of Sigmar), or equivalent.
January Additional: Who are these dudes? Are they your leaders honour guard or perhaps some mercenaries they’ve hired to kick start their (nefarious?) plans?

March – You’ve the start of a budding army! But we need more troops! Perhaps something to give a little ranged threat to the enemy? Or a unit that can scout ahead fast? Build and paint at least 5 models from either a missile or scout type unit (this could be cavalry, or perhaps Giant Eagles for Wood Elves, Scouts for Space Marines or a Gyrocopter for Dwarfs?).
Additional: Whose your leaders most hated foe and why? Did they suffer some slight at the enemies’ hands? Was a member of their family brutally mudrered by them?

April – Reinforcements! Build and paint at least 10 more models from your Core (Old World), Battleline (Age of Sigmar) or equivalent.
Additional: Do you have names for all your units yet? What about your army name? Where does it come from?

May – Build and paint either an artillery piece, a Tank, or an elite unit (Special or Rare in Old World).
Additional: Why not have a small game with your fledgling army? Perhaps your army has been ambushed on route to collect further reinforcements? Or they’re conducting a raid on a nearby enemy? Let us know the results!

June – Build anything of your choice! Perhaps there’s a centre piece model you want to paint?
Additional: Give this unit some background, why is it part of you army?

Show us your Models!

If you’re taking part in the challenge we’d love to her your plans, or even better, see your models as your army takes shape.

You can post them on our Discord Server, or send them via email to thewoehammer@gmail.com

Last Year

To give you some encouragement, here are some of the models that were painted and submitted last year.

Wargames Atlantic: Peasant Levy

Wargames Atlantic, renowned for their exceptional range of plastic miniatures, has just unveiled an exciting new box set that will appeal to both historical and fantasy wargamers. The Peasant Levy set includes 30 highly detailed plastic, multi-part figures, available for £30, offering fantastic value for players looking to enhance their armies.

These versatile miniatures are perfect for a variety of wargaming settings, from gritty historical battles to imaginative fantasy realms. The set features a wide range of poses and equipment, making it easy to customise your figures to suit the narrative of your choice. Whether you’re looking to represent common folk defending their land in a medieval historical setting or adding a unique narrative touch to your Cities of Sigmar forces, these figures provide endless possibilities.

The Peasant Levy box includes various weapon options such as spears, pitchforks, and other everyday tools of the common people. This makes them an ideal addition to any army seeking to include lower-class troops, whether for thematic campaigns, narrative play, or simply to bulk out your ranks. In a fantasy context, these figures could represent determined villagers, forced to take up arms in defence of their homes, adding a rich narrative feel to your battles.

Perfect for players wishing to bring a touch of rustic charm to their forces, the Peasant Levy set offers everything you need to create a ragtag band of fighters. Their simple yet evocative designs make them an excellent way to tell the stories of everyday heroes and unsung warriors, often overlooked in larger conflicts.

At just £30 for 30 figures, Wargames Atlantic’s Peasant Levy set is an essential addition to any collection. Whether you’re a historical wargamer building a medieval army or a fantasy enthusiast looking to add depth to your force, this box provides an affordable way to bring variety and character to your tabletop battles.

The Peasent Levy are available on pre-order and will be shipped in mid December.
