My First Teams Tournament!

Maybe I should get another pic done when I get introduced at tournaments sometimes as Nighthaunt Fitts

Another week, another Fittsy’s Foughts… and we’re on again with another Tournament Report. This time I headed out to lovely Rostock for Baltic Bash Team Edition 2025

Be warned, this is a bit of a mammoth one (it’s just long, there are no Ogors this time) because I took notes during the tournament and some of these games were damn exciting.

It’s so long that I’ve cut the bit about preparing for teams but I might come back to that again later. This was my first ever teams event and although I think in my heart of hearts that narrative is still the best way to play, this is a close second!

The Tournament Itself

https://www.tabletop-herald.com/age-of-sigmar/de/tournaments/sagydgZKcDcsOo2

The event was run on Tabletop Herald instead of BCP so you can see everything that went down from lists to matchups to overall results… don’t go check it yet or you’ll spoil the article. Save it for dessert!

Food was some homecooked Chili on Saturday and pizza on the Sunday. I couldn’t eat the chili due to an allergy but there were plenty of places nearby where I could go and pick something up to eat.

Weird thing to notice but the toilets were pretty clean and convenient which is important if you drink too much water and need to keep going for a quick wee in the opponent’s movement turn! There was also plenty of access to a nice courtyard, also good for going for a quick vape while the opponent picks a battle tictac.

Organisation was good and clear. Only one time had trouble finding a judge so we shouted louder and that sorted it out. The venue didn’t feel big but only once did I think it was getting hard to hear my opponent and normally I struggle with this a bit.

The Rostockers are a friendly bunch and I think that showed with teams rocking up from all across the north of Germany and generally a really positive and fun environment at the tournament.

Bonus was that there were a ton of prizes at the end which they raffled off after all the winners picked up something which I thought was a fun way to end the weekend.

Battleplans:

Round 1
Battle for the Pass – The Better Part of Valor – Starstrike
Round 2
Limited Resources – Border War – Shifting Objectives
Round 3
Close to the Chest – The Vice – Focal Points
Round 4
Shifting Objectives – Scorched Earth – Jaws Of Gallet
Round 5

A pretty good mix using every single battleplan… even Starstrike!

Deployment is the first movement phase… this is my “oh shit, Chosen are coming to get me” deployment

Faaaaark! First round and we pair into the toughest team there! Alongside Lukas was Jan and Dario. Three really nice guys and all top players in Germany. I was sort of hoping to pair into Jan with FEC just because I haven’t got to play against him yet and he’s a lovely fella. For the team though, having me put into STD as attacker was great as that’s exactly where my list wants to be into StD. Lukas is a really good player and took the golden ticket at the last GT I was at. Perhaps luckily for me, he was bringing StD and hadn’t gotten in many reps with them yet.

I deployed my Hexwraiths protecting the core of my army, important in this matchup is keeping the Grimghasts ready to clap back with support whilst trying to force the StD player to burn their double fight activations. Playing on Battle for the Pass is good for the StD here (unfortunately for me) as the Gaunt Summoner could stay well back and safe with the Chosen up in the silver tower.

It is the way it is… so I gave up the first turn and clenched my butt cheeks tight.

First turn one unit of Hexwraiths went down to a double Chosen activation even with the 5+ ward and -1 to wound. This was to plan but it still hurts a little to lose the unit first turn. I burnt both artefacts straight away to bring 5 Hexwraiths back and try to kill the chosen with the extra attack after Belakor Dork Mastered one of my 2 units of Grimghasts after I chose Slay the Entourage.

Lady O then proceeded to whiff on casting Griefstricken. The returned HWs didn’t pull of their 9” charge not unexpectedly. Then I was already getting greedy and decided to reroll the charge instead of using AoA for the chance to get them in and drop the -1 to save but also to position for next turn to go for a score more approach. That cost me 4 pts though when the Chosen lived with 2 models remaining and they were able to teleport out with the bridge in the next turn.

Those 2 Chosen sneaking off with my 4 points!

The game turned into how quickly could I hunt down the remaining StDs and score big over Lukas. This list is designed to be able to play into StDs… not always with such a convincing win but knowing how many Belakors and co are around in the meta at the moment… it’d be a mistake not to take that into account!

No Belakor, you can’t have this objective!
A decisive win against a top player and still one of the nicest dudes around… that was a great way to start

This was before my first turn and this was looking pretty tasty for me

Tom moved the army up carefully starting to take pot shots into my army whilst scoring pts and objectives… but this wasn’t going to work out well against 40 Grimghasts with a largely infantry army. My dice lit up and I got every charge off, pinning Dracos with HWs, getting all my GGs and the Cairn Wraith into his defensive line to just wipe it off and then icing on the cake catching the poor longstrikes with a charge around the side with my other Hexwwraiths. After a long turn 1 of rolling dice, Tom won the prio, took the turn, scored his 4 points and passed the turn over to me.

This was never going to end well for Krondys

I shot his bodyguard off the table with the Krulghast and Lady O, then proceeded to tally up 162 attacks on the Grimghasts into poor old Krondys with a strike last and -1 to save and that was that.

This ones for all you Krondys haters out there!

Tom was a real nice guy but this one was a demoralising defeat for him. I hope we met each other across the table sometime soon!

This was a really interesting list where I thought my ethereal saves were going to make quite  a big difference… spoiler alert, not a big enough difference. Sometimes it’s harder to write up about what went wrong, in this case, not so hard though. I decided to put pressure on the back line with the thought to flip over and take out the support heroes. I pushed my Hexwraiths up pretty hard and they proceeded to whiff on attacks and saves (which they’ll certainly do with all those 4 ups sometimes). I then threw some Grimghasts into the Immortis expecting to get some damage in but with Michael’s good positioning I couldn’t get as much into them as I wanted. I was losing models all over the place and with the endless spell taking one away from my ward saves, it was starting to hurt. The Morghast just consistently put damage into me each turn which I simply wasn’t trading back.

This is the only picture I took all game. This was an intense one!

Seeing this, I started to turtle up a bit in the middle and look for my point scoring opportunities. A timely return of 5 Hexwraiths behind a terrain piece to steal an objective kept me in the points turn 3 and Lady O did her thing to hold the centre convincingly in turn 4.

I was feeling pretty tired going into this game after two already exciting matches that day and I started to make mistakes (not just in my general strategy and filling in the turns in tabletop battles, see below) At one point, I completely forgot to move endless spells including the Jaws which could have made a difference in the combat I had set up.

In the end, we timed out just before end of round 4 so finsihed that off and we ended with a draw. From a teams perspectice, this was a great result and it would have been a close thing if I’d won prio into the last turn. Michael played better than me and deserved the win here. Lessons learned: just use a clock and don’t get tired!

Moral victory goes to Michael

So, this is not a great scenario for me to go up against IDK… with their insane speed and 2 wizards to teleport around I realised I couldn’t play for low points and defend so I went straight in hard instead. First turn, I was feeling pretty clever as I’d realised I could actually go for “Marked for the Grave” where you have to wipe an undamaged unit. This was a bit of a big play for the charge from one of my two units of Hexwraiths but I was actually trying to bait out the redploy, covering fire, all out defense to stop it so that I could put the pain down on the Mathlann of the Sea. That didn’t work and I rolled abysmally only taking about half it’s health with my full unit on the charge into the Mathlann. Counter point, I scored a 10 first turn. 2nd turn I almost took out the Mathlann and got it to 1 wound at which point it teleported away and proceeded to rally 5 wounds over 2 turns. The theory here had been to take out the teleporting units and use my Grimghasts and heroes to bully an area of the board as a clear path to victory. Failing to take out either wizard really made the game harder for me.

That scummy Mathlann sitting there on 1 health!

I moved slowly with the core of my army when I should have beelined for the middle so that I would be able to better focus my forces and use turn 2 before the all dreaded IDK turn 3, this was probably my one mistake for the game and it made all the difference. Well… except for when I used my Discorporate for a 5+ ward and then promptly forgot it until the end of the turn when I went to take my markers away and sadly looked at the 17 Grimghasts I’d lost across shooting and combat. Also, the double into turn 2 put the hurt on me knwoing I’d have to fight through a round of strike first without being able to use my charges to give a crucial unit strike last.

This was the turn of the tide 😉 😉

I bet on a teleport failing for the draw in the 4th round and consequently scored a 0 that turn but had also set myself up for an 8 pt turn to finish. With the denying tactics and objectives in turn 2 and 3, I lost by 4 points in the end. Tim played a tight and solid game and I think my Nighthaunt may have surprised him a bit!

Close enough for the team but victory was out of reach

Wow what an exciting game to finish!

Finally got to play against Dennis who I’ve seen arounda t a bunch of tournaments but hadn’t swuared off against across the table. He was bringing a shooty Skaven list with a unit of 6 stormfiends and a Warpseer.

I could manage to use the gnawhole to tag the unit of galvaneers but unfortunately not the ratlings, I was trying to whittle them down. Did a tired brain mistake and attacked the unit with one of the HWs thinking I had to when i had the gnawhole right there next to me. They did retreat next turn but I made sure I was able to pivot back around to the gnawhole which had been dropped in my backlines. This is quite a benefit of using NH and because of the run and charge and fly on everything, this can be challenging for the opponent to guage where safe zones can be

The 6 Stormfiends popped out and went into my Grimghasts which was my plan to bait them there where they couldn’t do too much damage and where I could then wipe them out with whichever unit of grimghasts didnät get wiped out first. This wouldäve been great but the first unit got wiped after concentrated shooting from the Ratlings and Stormfiends which allowed the stormfiends to charge into mz Cairn Wraith and Krulghast wiping them both out. This set me back a little mentally more than anything else but wasnt really a problem.

From there on, I took the double to take control of the board and started hunting units so that even with bringing 1 back a turn there would never be much on the board. Dennis kept playing well to score with his BLOODY teleports… at least 2 a turn, often a 3rd in my turn. His casting dice were hot that day! Scorched Earth is a rough one for game 5 but I managed to keep a good on eye on how I could score well (including swallowing a 2 point turn to make sure I’d have 3 more rounds of 6 pts off objectives and deny pts to Dennis).

This game was so chaotic… I got doubled into 2nd turn then I doubled into 3rd and got doubled into 5th again. I’m just going to let the pics of each turn tell their story, 3rd round onwards was just both of us trying to score and deny points.

I feel like Dennis deserved a higher score but no way was I going to make that easy for him!

Rounding it all up

You want to see what these fellas I’ve been talking about are like? Go join Dennis, Kai, and co up in Rostock and I’m sure you’ll be welcomed with a big smile. They are a super friendly bunch and I’m really happy I chose to join their tournament!

Here are their upcoming events:

https://www.tabletopturniere.de/t3_tournament.php?tid=36443

https://www.tabletopturniere.de/t3_tournament.php?tid=36444

https://www.tabletopturniere.de/t3_tournament.php?tid=36445

And no… they didn’t bribe me to promote their event but they’re welcome to do so next time we see each other 😉

The first game gave me a lot of confidence going into other games that I could continue to surprise people. I realised looking back at my matches that I need to play better when given 1st turn, Games 3 and 4 were all that much harder knowing I had to play against a potential double and it made all the difference against IDK

I might come back with a bit of an update of what it was like to prepare for and play in our first Teams Tournament… but you never know what next week’s article will be. I’d say it’s just to keep you all guessing but I’m having fun picking whatever I feel like on a week by week basis. I’m actually going to have a bit of a break from AoS for a month due to work and holidays… but it’s a chance to take a step back and play around with lists once the battlescroll drops. I may even try and focus a bit more on just doing some hobby for a while… well at least until the next tournament looms!

The real important bit

SHIT! I almost forgot… we came bloody 2nd! In our first teams tournament ever! I’m still stoked. Hats off to Tobi who stepped in as captain in the end to deal with the pairings… that was too much for me in German and he was throwing himself under the bus but kept playing tight games to keep the team score up. Janis and his snake ladies smashed on the table and he gets massive bonus points for the t-shirt he brought for the last day 😀

I was bloody stoked then and I still am! Also, that tshirt is gold!
