Konrad #3 by David S Garnett (writing as David Ferring)

The final book in the Konrad series comes after Konrad & Shadowbreed and was published back in 1993 at the dawn of the creation of the Black Library (the first time around)

From the book:
Konrad is plunged into a series of deadly adventures, aided only by the Warblade, a mystical sword forged especially for him, and his companions, as he sets out to uncover the mystery of his destiny and to take on his old enemies, the skaven, who are plotting against the Emperor himself.
It all started off so well, with Konrad having a strong start and such promise, but the trilogy dipped somewhat with Shadowbreed… is Warblade the triumphant finale that all readers want from a series.
Unfortunately Warblade does not deliver on the promise of the first book. Whilst it does have all the fighting and defending of the Empire it suffers from the ‘single hero’ set-up but wanting to go bigger and better.
So Konrad has to invade Altdorf in order to save the Emperor from a Skaven plot to replace him with a doppleganger. He is joined by the allies and people he has met throughout the books tying together the threads created in the previous novels. But it just feels wholly unlikely in the narrative of the Empire that Altdorf would fall to one man and some pirates… however focused on this goal Konrad is.
A disappointing end following a great set-up in Konrad.
